Food is alright; however, the undisclosed until checkout auto-gratuity is an underhanded business practice as it is not listed on the menu. Just raise your prices instead of throwing on a mandatory tip at the end. The staff doesn't even interact with the customers as ordering is self-service via a touchscreen kiosk. However, after giving grace 3-4 times now, the same poor attitude has been received by the one worker. If any question is asked, he ignores you until prompted a second time, where he responds in a very rude and annoyed tone. Again, I can understand having a bad day or being busy and rushed, however, every time I've visited your establishment, I've been met with this same attitude. I'll be taking my business to the other food trucks. They understand the importance of customer service and returning customers. I'll also be informing friends to avoid this establishment. Located at the end of Ward Avenue, next to the ocean, along Ala Moana Boulevard, there's a bunch of food trucks. The Elephant Shack is one of them. The Elephant Shack specializes in Thai cuisine. Order and pay on the tablet. Wait at the table with the "pick up here" sign for your meal. It's quite an efficient process! Service was helpful and polite. As I was ordering, I asked the guy at the window about the spice level. He said that "mild" is not spicy. Okay... I will have to trust you... When I picked up my order, the gal was cheerful and attentive! We just grabbed our meals and ate elsewhere, so we parked for free. If you stay and dine there, scan the QR code and pay for parking online. My Pad Kee Mao was delicious! I liked the fresh basil, broccoli, and pieces of long green beans. One of my go to take out places for fast and good Thai food. I've had the pad Thai, pad see ew, and Penang curry. This last visit we ordered Chicken Pad Thai, Chicken Penang Curry, and Thai Iced tea. Food was great and we had some leftovers. My boyfriend got the medium spice level for the Pad Thai and it was actually pretty spicy. Curry is made with coconut and slightly on the sweeter side but very tasty! Thai iced tea is also made with coconut milk so keep that in mind if you don't like coconut. You order on the tablet in the front and pay through it too. You don't really talk to the workers unless you have any questions they are mostly busy cooking. Once your order if ready someone comes out with it and calls your name. You also grab your own utensils at the front. Lots of seating outside, some with covered umbrellas. Well lit and music on speakers playing. Also lots of parking- free for the first hour or two if supporting the food trucks. read more

One of my favorite pad see ew dishes on the island. It can be a bit pricey depending on what you order, but it's pretty worth it for the most part. One small downside is that I wish they offered beef as a protein option for the pad see ew. The ambiance is very casual since it's a food truck with outdoor seating, which is great if you enjoy eating outside. I'd recommend ordering online unless you don't mind waiting a bit during rush hour. There are plenty of seats available, especially since it's located in a lot with other food trucks. Came to this food truck area on our last night in Oahu and decided to stop by the Elephant Food shack as it appeared to be the only one open at night. Food is cooked fresh which is great but also meant we were waiting a long time for 1 order of Pad See Ew. Sat there for about 40 minutes until our order was next up. Super friendly lady runs the food out to you. Price is a bit much for the portions, the noodles were fantastic but there wasn't much broccoli or chicken in our order. We've ate at the food trucks in Oahu before and they pack the containers for the price you pay. Generally wouldn't come back unless you're really really crazing some pad Thai. Probably my favorite Thai food on the island. I love that it's outdoors and not overcrowded. To me, this has been my gem since 2023 and it never fails me. The yum nua steak plate is S-tier. Bold, super flavorful steak. The steak itself is not the best cut, but the thai flavoring on it is hella good. Got mines with a wok fried egg too and that made it even better. Get choke tables and its by Kewalos so you can look at the ocean while you pound steak. read more

We happened to drive by on our way to get food and we decided to take a detour here to try something new. Everything on the menu looked amazing and I couldn't decide what to order so I asked the chef. He recommended the Yum Nua so I ordered that. The flavor was amazing! The dish has a little kick to it and the mint gives it a great flavor. I didn't think I would like eating mint but again I was pleasantly surprised with the composition of flavors. Everything tasted amazing. They also have a spacious patio seating area with lights at night. It made a lovely impromptu day night for us even though that wasn't our original plan. This truck has been around many years, originally in Pupukea. The menu is the same. 10% more for Non-Optional tipping, so add that to the menu price. Parking lot and some water views, limited table seating. No table service, so not sure what "gratuity" is for. My favorite is the yum nua (grilled marinated steak tossed in fresh chili-lime jus with cilantro, shallots, grape tomato, mint, scallion, lemongrass and kao kua served with jasmine rice). The steak is so flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The sauce is sweet and tangy. They really give you a lot of food. I have also tried the thai basil fried rice, which i also recommend. First learned about The Elephant Shack on IG. They are located in the cluster of food trucks at Kewalo Basin on Ala Moana Blvd and Ward Avenue. Public pay parking available. Covered picnic tables to enjoy your food. I went at night and there was ambient lighting and the music was bumping. Fun date place. Self order on a large touch pad with tap credit card. I've been wanting to try their Yum Nua (Thai beef salad) after seeing a food review raving about it. This dish definitely hits all the notes. The flank steak is a cooked to medium with nice smoked char coming from the grill. With mint, cilantro, lemon grass for freshness and cucumber and tomatoes composing the salad. The sauce is savory, tangy, with a little kick of spice. All over a bed of jasmine rice that soaks up all that flavor. I absolutely need to have this again! I didn't try any of the food however, I ordered a Tai Iced Tea only to find a fly in my drink. When I informed the proprietor of the establishment of my discovery, he was super apologetic and replaced my drink with no questions asked. He even offered more than what I had purchased and was genuinely embarrassed by the fluke that nature had provided. I informed him that we were good accepted another drink sans fly. You scan and pay using the parking app, but I didn't see anyone patrolling around. Of course, I paid for an hour away. $4. Ambiance: It has such cute outdoor seating! The chicken wings are the best Thai chicken wings I've ever had. The flavors are robust! Sweet, tang, and spicy! The wings were a good size, the outside was crispy, and the sauce was so good I wanted to bathe in it. The Penang curry was good. Not memorable, but the rice it came was super dry!! But the pad kee mao was bomb! I ordered it Thai spicy and sure enough, they delivered. I love when Thai places actually deliver on the level of spice, and this did not disappoint. I was sweating the entire time I was eating, and that didn't stop me. The flavors were out of this world, and the noodles were perfect. PERFECT! Updating this place to 2 stars for the following reasons: 1) The computerized ordering system is clumsy and confusing. The lady in front of me literally took 10 minutes to order. They need another terminal. 2) There is a mandatory 10% tip. Give me a break. So lame. A decent Thai food truck in Kakaako. You can find others that are better but for a truck they're pretty good. I've tried the Thai basil fried rice and chicken Penang dishes so far. The Penang curry was onolicious! It lacked veggies and only had a small amount of basil leaves and a few short pieces of string beans. They could have added carrots and potatoes to it which most other Thai restaurants do but they did not. Everyone has their own style I guess. The Penang comes with jasmine rice. I thought the quantity for the fried rice was ok. Maybe good for two to share with other dishes. Otherwise this is the best wagon at the old fisherman's wharf location at Kewalo Basin. read more

This Elephant in the corner room at Kaka'ako is a gem I'd like to keep hidden. Located on Kawaihao Street a block from Ward Ave, is this truck and it dishes out incredible Thai food. Among other unique businesses they do have their on lot where you're able to park up to three cars not only you're able to order online (via Chow now) to easily take home dinner, they have this adorable nook right beside the truck seating for a couple of families or a few couples. Yes you certainly can order online though I had issues trying as I've never used Chow Now so I decided to just stop by and order on their computer pad. Just fyi they do automatically add gratuity and it seems to be 10% with a prompt "This restaurant adds this fee to cover costs and continue service your community 100% goes to the restaurant" this doesn't seem like a gratuity but more a restaurant fee either for the container, utensils or to pay for the string lights utility fee lol!! I got the Pad See Ew with Chicken and you're able so adjust your spice level and I decided on mild to be safe. It all was made to order and didn't take very long but was hot and really yummy! I love the char on everything it all tasted really great and portion size was large in my opinion though in all it came out to $19 which is quite expensive but having leftover does make it fairly okay. With benches and banquette style seating, string lights and lanterns this rustic decor just transport you to another place where you can just chill and escape there already was some families there so I decided to take mine home but will love to enjoy the ambiance here the next time as it's starting to cool in the evening making it a stunning place! I went here twice just a week apart. First time it was a real surprise find hence led me going back for my craving. Both times I got the same dish -- pad kee mao -- first time it was a solid 4-5 stars; unfortunately second time it was a 1-2 :( Last week I I ordered a chicken pad kee mao medium spice. The noodles are soft and chewy with a great deal of wok hey! I'd say it was even better than 2 of my favorite Thai dine-in restaurants in town! MY NEW FAV! Portion is decent, flavor / spice level on point (Thai chili no joke! But it's so delicious) The only miss is the chicken was a little tough and dry (cooked breast meat so it was double cooked?) and there was no other meat choices. It is a food truck I'll go with that, and I don't mind breast meat. However I ended up omitting some of the dryer chicken pieces, but ate the rest of the box before firework even finished. It was THIS GOOD! (Picture 1) A week later I was little under the weather I haven't had much appetite but really craving for this pad kee mao (that's how good it was!!). So I purposely drove out of my hoods only to get the noodles, also picked one up for my friend. This time I ordered the same PKM medium spice chicken for my friend, and ordered PKM mild tofu for myself. When I received the stacked 2 boxes, I naturally opened the top one and checked, and it looked just as amazing as last time. Then I headed home. When I finally got home excitedly and putting all my eating desires into my noodles... wait a minute.... mmmmm.... My box said "PKM T" but it was chicken in the box. A very very big piece and some dry-looking chunk of chicken :( Today was the day i really wanted some soft protein rather the tough chicken :( Of course. I wasn't going to drive back. Also... I understand flat noodles are generally asymmetrical. But my box of noodle was wayyyyyy off (picture 2). More disappointedly, they were not evenly cooked. Some were really dark in color with the nice coating of sauce but those big flat pieces were just pale white. This time the chicken was even more tough and dry I could barely ate :( On the other side, my friend said hers was good (except chicken was just ok). I didn't really see how many people were actually cooking in the truck to create this much of difference, but I was really sad that my noodle wasn't worth by drive and my hope :( At least my friend liked hers tho. I was really looking forward to trying this food truck for a while. I do love me some Thai food but food trucks normally don't have everything I like to order. So that's normally why I don't frequent the Thai truck options. The one thing I do love and all of them have is noodz. Pad Thai and pad see ew are my go to's. I'll normally order them with chicken or tofu depending if I'm feeling meatless that day... I looked through the menu and decided on the pad see ew with chicken. They have a screen in front of the truck and that is how orders are placed. Either that or online from your phone. They are cashless so you need to have either credit card to swipe at their machine or an online form of payment through the website. I got my order fairly quickly and was excited to eat. I take a couple bites and already my mouth is tingling. Not sure what kind of Asian I am but I do not handle spice well AT ALL. I sat there trying to push through and really struggled not wanting to make a fuss about it. With pad see ew anywhere else this has never been an issue. So finally I walk my plate back, quite embarassed, and let the cook know it was way too spicy for me and wondered if he added a spice. He was absolutely sure there is no spice in that dish. So I ask if he mightve added a lot of black pepper or something. My friend tasted the dish and agreed it had quite a kick to it! He opens the plate, grabs one of the plastic forks and tosses a bite of noodles in his mouth right in front of me. I was a bit taken aback by that and kind of felt like a 5 year old that was making something up to my uncle at that moment.... anyway, after tasting it himself it dawned on him that it was white pepper. I don't cook with this and its an unfamiliar spice to me but I still consider it a spice (correct me if I'm wrong). I double checked on the menu and it wasn't listed. But oh well *shrug*. It literally tasted like when you go to season your dish and OOPSIE, the cap fell off and there went a glob of whatever that was! He did end up making a whole new plate for me, this time with no pepper at all. It was a really good dish. Just the whole experience really ruined it for me. Not sure if it was his intention to make me feel dumb about it, but too late now. Situations like this low key give me trust issues with my food made by others. I definitely need to be more self aware and ask about the things I absolutely don't want present in my dishes. Lesson learned! Overall, price, quality and quantity of food are good value for $.
