Ordered the chicken katsu plate and it was exactly what I wanted. The katsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a light, crunchy breading that didn't feel greasy at all. The rice was fluffy and comforting, and the mac salad was creamy, slightly sweet, and classic--the perfect balance to the crispy chicken. Add a drizzle of katsu sauce and every bite just works. Simple, satisfying, and done right. This is solid comfort food you can't go wrong with. Would definitely order again.

Asahi Grill formerly known as Kapiolani Coffee Shop is serving great comfort food! Well-balanced with flavor and portions, each dish is well-prepared to create the warmth of enjoying a hearty meal. Each day has a specific special and a daily special for everyone to drool over. Price is reasonable and parking is available, but limited. Be careful on parking on other company's parking lot, you may get towed. Service is great. There was only one server, but she handled all the tables with ease. The interior was clean amd well maintained. A must try restaurant!

Update: Had a bad experience on a return visit. Ordered the chicken katsu and mahi combo. Portions both small and mahi not fresh. Very unsatisfying meal. Plus, left a nice tip in cash on table but when paying at the register, the filipino lady saw I didn't leave a tip on the credit card slip and questioned why I wasn't leaving a tip like its mandatory or something. A lot of nerve when paying $20+ for skimpy plate of old food and cash tip on table. Not going back here ever again.

One of my go tos near ala moana - the oxtail soup is the excellent. 10/10 recommend - Lup cheong fried rice is good and filling - service was very fast when we went, it was only like 5 minutes till all our food arrived - pleasant staff and comfortable ambiance

Asahi Breakfast comes with choice of Saba or Mahi-mahi or salmon, salad, rice, egg and soup but didn't receive soup.

Located on Ward Street is Asahi Grill they have parking which can hold up to 8-10 cars. We went in and waitress asked how many which I mentioned 2 and she sat us on a small table for 2 with 3/4 of the restaurant seating empty with couples seating on tables for 4 while there were only 2 tables in the whole restaurant that can sit 2 customers? Sat there for a while waiting for waitresses to take our order, when we were ready to leave the waitress came and asked if we were ready to order. I ordered the Asahi Grill breakfast which was salmon, eggs, salad, rice and miso soup, but didn't receive the miso soup which most Japanese breakfast always have. After asking the waitress she says if customers don't ask for soup they don't give? I saw 4 other customers eating the Asahi breakfast and all had miso soup? Told her why is it on the menu that say includes rice & soup? If it is optional it should not be included with meal rice & soup? She said they didn't take it off the menu? The salmon was good, green salad was fresh and rice was okay, eggs were like a flat hard pancake. My wife had the luncheon meat, scrambled egg and rice they have 2 eggs for these meals, the only way it can be this small serving is they are using 2 small eggs. Trying to eat and flies flying around and none of the workers do anything about getting rid of them? Hope they are not on the food waiting to be served! Restrooms are outside of building, they have separate men and women.

Came here to try the breakfast. It was super crowded at 10am on a Sunday. All of the tables were taken and luckily we got the last table as we walked in. I got the "big breakfast" since I thought it was the best deal, but was disappointed when the server said it only comes with portuguese sausage or bacon, not both. I thought it came with both based on how the menu was written (maybe they can add the word "or" to the menu". It was a good sized breakfast since it had pancakes and was filling. However I was a disappointed further because the pancake on the top was big, but the one under was considerably smaller. In addition, the egg was quite oily. The service was a bit slow, but at least water was refilled fairly often. Overall, I will probably go elsewhere in the future as I don't think it's worth the price sadly. Parking: Several stalls in the parking lot in front of the restaurant

This is not a "five-star restaurant" - but it's five stars old-school because free parking in front, all comfort food especially oxtail soup, fast service and decent prices for today. Oh and no loud music so can have a conversation. Located on Ward Avenue, on Diamond Head side, makai of Kapiolani Blvd. Look for their green roof. Parking lot has 10-12 stalls. Inside there's a pick-up window and about 12 tables. Three in the middle can accommodate larger parties. No booths. Servers are nice, quick, efficient, reminds me of Kings Bakery, Tiki Tops, Smittys, Like Like Drive In. Hubby and I went on a Sunday at 11:00 am after the Book Fair in Kakaako. Both ordered club sandwich with fries and a fruit punch. Fries were excellent, sandwich perfectly constructed with right amount of everything on a lightly toasted Japanese-kine bread. Fruit punch was how I always remembered it as a kid. One thing missing was a dill pickle but that's okay, we still enjoyed. Price was fair and comparable to other similar places. Be careful exiting lot as cars come pulling in fast from side street.

Best oxtail soup I've ever had for a decent price too!! As a kid growing up, I'd always get their fried rice with over easy eggs. To this day it's still one of the top 5 fried rices I've ever had. Staff was always friendly, helpful, and respectful. And after your meal you can treat yourself to a complementary peppermint candy as well The only issue here is the limited parking spots. But other than that, great service and amazing tasting food for affordable prices! 5 stars

It's been a year and still a good, basic, way better than Zippys homestyle kinda place. I had the spicy ahi don and wish it was a bigger bowl. A side of mac salad hit the spot. We came around 1:30pm and it was pretty empty. Service was good and parking was available given it was past the rush time.

Oxtail Ramen. Wow...that looked so good to enjoy there.

Well...where do I start? I surely didn't anticipate coming to Asahi Grill on a Wednesday, and didn't know if it was gonna rain that day. The place screams old-school with the way the decor looked. It felt like I was actually in a local sit-down restaurant. I ended up eating their Oxtail Ramen, which...was not that bad at all. The depth of flavor in the broth really held up well to the ramen noodles. Super rich and flavorful, especially when I had a bite of the Oxtail with some of the noodles and the herbs. It was a great bite. I think I added a little too much ginger in the broth, which might have changed this review a little bit differently. Overall though, the ramen was very hearty and delicious to enjoy. I highly would recommend this place for sure. Maybe next time I'll try something else if given the opportunity. For me, Asahi gets a 9.5 out of 10. It was a good experience for what it's worth.

Had a nice lunch at Asahi Grill today . Wasn't planning to come here but after attending the Young at Heart event at the Blaisdell ... my friend was hungry for anything that was close by . This is a good go-to restaurant whenever in the area . It wasn't crowded since was after 100pm so we found parking easy. The server was very friendly and polite and ready to take our order . Ordered a clubhouse sandwich and a small oxtail soup . My friend totally enjoyed her sandwich and claims one of the best she has eaten and she loves her clubhouse sandwiches . My oxtail soup came with two big scoops of rice and maybe 4 or 5 big pieces of oxtail which was delicious and very tasty. And I ate all of it and drank the very last drop of the soup! The small portion was perfect size since I didn't want to eat a huge meal that late . The inside of the restaurant was very clean and felt very comfortable eating there. Can't find too many of these old type neighborhood restaurants anymore . We always come back here for comfort food!

Decent homemade dishes, prices reasonable, adequate service. Parking can be hard but there is side street stalls if you get lucky, best time to go is 1pm to avoid the lunch rush. Inside decor could use some renovations but I'm not here to look around, I'm here to eat and chat it up with friends. I like that they don't rush people out and we stayed pretty long. 3 of us actually ordered to go plates to take home! Again...not fancy but just good home cooked dishes and relax vibe.

    Loco moco
    Leland N.

This place was small but the service was great they always made sure we had water so that definitely is a plus for me. It wasn't that crowded even though we went during lunch time but it was a weekday so it could've been that. I had a loco moco because wherever I go and they have a loco moco I definitely got to try it and I must say it was one of my favorite loco moco. Gonna come back here again to try other foods and definitely recommend this place.

If you're not a fan of seafood, don't let the squid deter you as it is a minimal part of the dish and added more of a crunchy textural component rather than actual flavor. This was my wife and my favorite dish. The luau pork was also very good though I liked the version we had at Toa Luau better. We also liked the haupia which was a very refreshing coconut pudding though for some reason our boys didn't like it. We also tried pipikaula which are thinly sliced dry-aged beef short ribs marinated in soy sauce and something else that made it sweet. If you know Korean barbeque, you'll instantly get the sensation that these are close cousins to galbi, though the pipikaula are much less sweet in comparison. The dry aging process also makes them a bit more dryer than galbi. On to more difficult stuff. I was enthusiastic about the fried butterfish collar but once I got a waft of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. I'm very sensitive when it comes to fish so the smell (more than the taste) was off putting. My wife was fine with it and enjoyed the dish, but if you aren't a fan of fishy fish, then I would skip it. The lomi salmon looked very much like pico de gallo with the addition of salt-cured salmon. My boys loved this dish because they love salmon but again I would steer clear if you are a seafood weakling like me. Alas, we come to poi. Had my hopes up since I love taro but the texture and a bit of sourness from fermentation deterred me from trying too much of it. I'm glad we tried it but not sure that we would get it again.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Took a chance any way. Server greets everyone who comes in. Too much work for only one server, hard to get taken care of. More than half the tables were full even before 5pm on a Saturday, and there's a steady take out business, too. Looked at the online menu since the server didn't bring us a menu and we were waiting, but it doesn't list the squid luau combo so we had to wait for the server to take our order. She did take care of us before the walk ins that were ordering take out, and we appreciated that. However, turned out squid luau combo wasn't listed online because they were out. Boo. So hubby and I ordered the laulau combo consisting of a nice sized laulau that was tasty, with a nice ratio of pork to leaves, very large scoop of rice, some lomi salmon that was mostly onions that were quite strong and bitter and almost no salmon, pulehu chicken, which was tasty and had a nice char, and haupia, which was good. So food was fifty/fifty. Hubby ordered a coke, which was bottled Mexican (means real cane sugar) which was yummy. They serve Mexican food so I guess they have other Mexican sodas, but I didn't bother to check the menu. We had to ask for water three times because the server was so busy. We had a lot left over since the portions are big. Not sure if we will be back, though. While the server was nice and trying hard to take care of everyone, having to wait to order (another family even came up to ask is they could order after waiting for awhile) and then having to ask for water three times is a turn off for us. Also - no squid luau where's Hawaiian food is served was a major let down for me.

Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! I bought kimchi spam, eel spam, inari spam, and a furikake rice ball. Didn't really interact with staff as they didn't offer to help while I viewed the items and I selected my items fairly quickly. I found purchasing four musubis very affortable. Finding parking was tough and expensive in the area. Not the restaurant's fault and probably drivers are not the bulk of their business.

The guava bar was delicious and flavorful and just crumbles in your mouth! Definitely one of the better guava bars I've tried. Love how crumbly it is. The salmon belly was delicious OMFG. It looks so simple and straightforward but that sht is so flavorful. It is crispy and yet soft on the inside. The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. This would hit very hard with alcohol but because I don't drink I need a kombucha. The grilled salmon belly would go perfect with it. Cheers! Uncle was very helpful and kind when serving and if you dine-in he brings it to your table.

The patty its self was okay. Nothing super special. Unfortunately no spiciness in this dish. And the kimchi was more on the sweet side rather than the fermented spicy. Tried to add their chili pepper water but again I was left without the fiery kick in my mouth. Definitely has a strong garlicky taste though. Service is quick. But came on a Monday before dinner time so it was slow. Lots of seating and open air flow. Direct parking is limited but street parking is available.

3.5 stars We wanted…read moreto try authentic Hawaiian food and came across this spot. The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
