Rays cafe is an old school restaurant with the best food really first time I went there , side street parking, never asked if they had bathroom not wheelchair accessible but but you can take out had so much people coming to pick up the take out food so you know they good, service great The food was amazing I going back there. Restraunt is mellow and clean with a old school style vibe if you never been there before you need to go and see what I talking about
I belong to this local food group and people raved about the prime rib here. I would've gotten it, because I saw a woman eating it for breakfast, and she couldn't finish it all. I had lunch plans later so too heavy, but it sure looked good! This is an old school, down to earth cafe, with a cozy dining room. A friendly good morning and he told me to have a seat. Lots to choose from and I decided on the corned beef hash and eggs. It came with two scoops of rice and buttered toast. This really hit the spot! The men working here are really nice! Please keep in mind, it's cash only. Parking is a challenge. It's also in an area that's locals heavy, so no ack high maka maka...LOL! But once you're in, get ready for some real local kine cookin!
I think I've been to this longtime ( but it may have been too long or a false memory ) local eatery on North School Street. Ray's Cafe is known for their prime rib. So, that is what I got for takeaway. Open daily, from 600a to 500p...I went for the Prime Rib Plate at $28+ ...a decent price...no general excise tax tacked on. Thiccc ( with three c's ) slice...done medium as requested. It came with two scoops of rice, au jus ( aurite ), and a choice between greens or mac salad. If you are hungry, this meal will satisfy. Excellent signature dish. Well seasoned. Parking: street metered stalls are nearby and in front of the cafe. Old school interior...service...so old school, they only accept cash.
Ok 1st time at Ray's cafe - parking very limited so we did takeout instead! They will do phone order which is something to consider- it's cash only but at these price it's not a dealbreaker! Seating is limited to 6 tables so it's another good reason for takeout! We got the prime rib for $28.95 w/ rice - green salad and horseradish! Can't wait to get home to dig into it! The cut is generous for the 2 of us to share ! The wait for food is fast considering only Uncle and one other are taking orders and doing kitchen work. The prime rib was perfectly Med-rare loved our meal! Got to get back for the fried chicken and other specials! It was easy to find but parking is very limited but the folks are nice and the food great! So maybe uber to the restaurant and not worry about out parking! The food is worth it prices are awesome
The owner/Felix always friendly and welcoming...a very generous human...I ordered 3 Ray's Special plate consisting of home made, tasty hamburger steak and 2 pcs fried chicken, rice and mac salad & 1 hamburger steak plate, which Felix, as a bonus, added a pc of fried chicken to the plate. He didn't charge for it! I picked up a to go order and when I entered the little cafe, every seat was occupied...great local/family style ambiance!
Amazing Food at a Hidden Gem! I was in Hawaii for my birthday and came across Ray's Cafe on Yelp -- the reviews were glowing, so my wife and I decided to check it out. We grabbed an Uber from the Hilton Hawaiian Village (it's too far to walk) and headed over. The hotel front desk guy even confirmed what I'd read: Uncle Ray is known for his Prime Rib, and the rib-eye and fried chicken are also must-tries. When we arrived, it was definitely a hole-in-the-wall spot, maybe 18 seats inside, but don't let that fool you. This place is all about incredible food and hospitality. I ordered the Prime Rib ($27.75), and it was cooked to perfection -- tender, flavorful, and the crust was absolutely delicious. The cut was about 1-2 inches thick and came with two scoops of rice and a choice of mac salad or green salad (I went with the mac salad). The best part? When I finished my rice, Uncle Ray himself asked if I wanted more! Who does that anymore? He truly wants to make sure you leave full and happy. My wife went big and ordered the Rib-Eye and Lobster Tail combo ($56.75). What she got was incredible: a perfectly cooked rib-eye (medium, just as she likes it) and not one, but two large lobster tails, cooked to perfection and served with melted butter and lemon. She also had two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad. Everything was amazing -- the portions, the quality, the service. I was so impressed that I'm telling everyone: this is the spot. It's absolutely worth the Uber ride to get there. Next time we're in Hawaii, we'll be back for sure. Mahalo, Uncle Ray!

This melt in your mouth, perfectly cooked prime rib comes with 2 scoops rice and a scoop of Mac Salad. Bonus! Slice of Custard Pie to make this epic meal complete! Nothing fancy here but plenty of old school Aloha flowing from Rays attentive servers that make you feel at home. CASH ONLY! Sunday lunch hunger. Husband was craving Prime Rib. Called around a couple places near Waipahu... sold out or prices are high. Drove all the way to Kalihi for Ray's Cafe... open every day and they always have prime rib. Found street parking and modest Cafe was filled with diners and lots of take-out. Lots of regulars. Ordered their prime rib and opakapaka (another diner recommended the pork chop for next time). Our meals included a small salad. Food came out timely and was delicious... everything cooked perfectly. Cravings filled and left super satisfied... headed home for a nice Sunday afternoon nap. Thanks, Uncle Felix! Don't let the location or appearance of this place fool you. It's probably one of best places in Kalihi for great food. You will find the owner Mr. Ray to be one of the most humble business owners you will ever meet. The prime rib plate and the steak and shrimp 10/10. The fried chicken, better than Zippy's. Probably top 3 on this island. Very moist, huge, flavourful to the bone. Great employees as well. Support this place and give it a try. You will definitely make it ur regular eating place. Aloha
The food was not to shabby very nice portions for the price. The only thing I thought needed some help was the tartar sauce to butterfish ratio maybe having a little bit more would have been great but all in all it was a good experience. Keep in mind they do only accept cash so keep the credit card in the car haha. Service was great parking is a bit tough to find In this part of town and the inside atmosphere was quite homey. Very great people mahalo to the crew here at rays cafe. Next time I'll come to try their prime rib & lobster tail, I've heard a lot of good things about it.
$28.95 for a large, well seasoned, beautifully cooked prime rib meal. Small fresh green salad, 2 scoops of rice and a cup of au jus. This is such a deal! Cash only here. I wanted to try so many other things. Check Ray's Cafe instagram for his daily specials. He had a prime rib and snow crab combo for $55.95. Steak and Shrimp scampi sounds so good right now. The pork chops with mushroom gravy looked delicious. I've only ever had prime rib and fried chicken. In fact, I didn't know they had fries so I never even had a burger! It might look like a dive, but Ray provides the fancy vanity fair napkins, real dishware and cutlery (not paper plates). Lots of condiments on the table to choose from. It has been well over 10 years since my last time here. The furniture in the seating area is all newer. I used the restroom for the first time in my life (better than a beach park). The gentlemen taking the orders was efficient and friendly. I was bummed he asked where I was from, thinking we were Californians. I grew up off School Street and Gulick a few blocks away.
If you're daring to go to a sketch neighborhood hot spot, this place is for you. The owner Ray is the sweetest guy ever. He's been running this place for decades and has a variety of menu items that constantly change. We wanted to go there for their ox tail stew but sadly it wasn't on the menu that day. I ordered the fried chicken wings instead and it ranked pretty high up there on my standards. It was made to order so it was hot and fresh and crispy throughout. The best part is that you get the whole wing and not some drums or flats. My family ordered their grilled butterfish which they raved about. Warning! This is a cash only place so bring cash. Very reasonable priced menu items. People were ordering the prime rib and lobster and the prime rib and crab legs. Big portions great prices. They're side dishes is nothing to write home about. All dishes come with rice and a choice of Mac salad or green salad. This is a very small place and it gets busy with the locals so if you don't mind waiting, check this place out.

Need a great take-out meal for a great price? Ray's will not disappoint. There are a few tables, but the beauty of this place is that you're not paying for the ambiance, you're paying for delicious no frills prime rib, and if you're lucky, lobster tail too! We ordered the prime rib & 3 lobster tails special for $69.99 and fed three people (one is a smallish person). We ordered a back-up plate lunch with the smoked ham steaks that we barely touched, because we were so full. Most prices are under $30, and they have a great breakfast menu as well. Even though it was a busy day, our food came out in just a few minutes. Glad this place is still around. Can't wait to go again next time I need a cheap protein boost! read more

They haven't been screwing up my food lately which is good lol ! I still come for the prime rib ...but my new go to is oxtail stew which they have every Friday. You won't find that much oxtail for that price any where on island. The prime rib with king crab kind of isn't worth it anymore. If you going be that much for prime rib and king crab just go buffet. read more

**CASH ONLY** Great charcoal seared, pounded steak! There is a bank across the street with a $4.75 servixe charge....parking is pretty much non existent with 4 spots down an incredibly busy street...good luck...eggs so fresh you can taste/feel the shell crunch! They are pounding the steak as you enter and service is quick! I would definitely come back to try the other things on the menu at this incredibly hole in the wall joint... read more

We went to Ray's Cafe as the Beef Liver with onions was finally available. We called to place our order for pickup. Beef Liver, and Prime Rib, requested rare, with Mac Salad. It is a quaint little restaurant with no parking and only accept cash. I had the pleasure to talk to a patron and we had a nice conversation as I was waiting for my orders. Finally, the staff handed me the prime rib and said my bill ($27.00). I know it should be more than that as I also ordered the beef liver which I followed-up, and only then did they start making it. They forgot. No big deal, I went back to talking to the nice lady. Finally, the beef liver was ready and paid the bill. However, I came home to see a close to well-done prime rib which I ordered as rare. Also, they gave us salad for the prime rib when I ordered mac salad, doesn't help that the dressing was so watery and bland. They also didn't give us a horseradish sauce which usually comes with the prime rib along with the au jus! I know I should've checked, but considering I waited so long and was trying to make it to our car quickly as we parked at Nanding's Bakery and didn't want to get ticketed, checking slipped my mind. My fault. The beef liver, on the other hand, was good. I love liver and was satisfied with it. Just a little nervy, but I figured it's normal. My bf who ordered the prime rib was so done with all the mishaps whenever we go to Ray's Cafe. Missing items, wrong orders, prime rib not cooked the way we ordered. I would still love to be back when they have the beef liver, but I hope they step-up with their services. Definitely have to work with the accuracy of order taking, and double-checking the orders being given to the customers. I know I should also be responsible in doing that, but before the responsibility gets passed on to the customer, the business should be doing it in the first place. I love supporting small businesses like Ray's, but our patience with all the mishaps is slowly thinning, and with all the inconvenience going there (no parking, only cash), it's becoming harder to give them grace every time. read more

A true hole in the wall place, Ray's cafe is the perfect place to visit for true Aloha. Ray is so great at making you feel welcome and part of the family. We loved talking stories while we waited for our food. We always try to stop by at least once during our visits to Honolulu because the prime rib is a must. My husband and I usually split the prime rib and another plate (like their fried chicken). Please come to Ray's, this is a hidden gem! read more
Back at home and what did I eat on the 2nd day??? Ray's of course! They had Prime Rib with King Crab Legs ($69.95) as one of their specials today and that's what I got. Let me tell you... they NEVER miss. From the large portions, the wonderful flavor, the good customer service and the great quality of their ingredients... It's always sooo good. I will always recommend giving Ray's a visit. Just keep in mind... it's CASH ONLY. read more
Excellent little eatery on busy King St. Embodiment of "hole in the wall" with some of the best meals here. They have good food every day with good prices and nice portions, but where they beat all the restaurants on the island is their weekly specials, specifically their Alaskan Crab Legs & Prime Rib. For $67.50, you can get 1 lb of sweet beautiful Alaskan Crab Legs with dipping butter and a thick slab of medium rare juicy prime rib. OMG it was sooooo delicious! The crab was sweet, meaty and delicious, the prime rib was thick, tender and flavorful especially with the au jus. It was so much food I had to take most of the meat home. It was awesome!! If you drive here, you will have to "hunt" for parking on the side streets as there is Very limited metered parking on King Street. But despite the limited parking and limited seating (~7 tables) it's totally worth it. This is one of our favorite places to eat on the island, and the folks here are so friendly and welcoming. read more
On Christmas Eve, I called in my takeout order...4 medium rare Prime Rib specials with toss salad for our Christmas Day brunch but still had to wait about a half hour due to rib wasn't quite done yet. When I finally got my order, I had 4 containers with the Prime Rib but only 3 salad containers so I asked them for the 4th. When I took it home, I opened the containers to cool because I didn't want the medium rare Prime Rib to turn to medium. Lo and behold, there was a missing au jus in one of the containers! Sharing 3 au jus with 4 large pieces was so disappointing BUT the Prime Rib was so tender and so tasty...everyone enjoyed it! I was going to give 4 stars BUT the Prime Rib was awesome so it went back to 5 stars! I will definitely check my order better the next time AND I will be back! Tips: 1. Bring cash...CASH ONLY 2. Came back today, 6/25/25 and the food, service and nostalgic feeling still 5 stars for us! We ordered 2 ribeye plates, prime rib and chicken wings for less than $100! How amazing is that?! Uncle Felix is still friendly and makes you feel ohana. Small restaurant, ambiance is filled with aloha. Definitely must stop for us every time we are on Oahu. read more
Based on a friend's recommendation, my nephew and I visited Ray's, a small, out of the norm, literally "hole in the wall" in Kalihi (yes, Kalihi) and it's a place where the food "broke da mouth" (in other words, it's really good). Do NOT expect a fine dining experience, it's more of a fine culinary culinary experience as the ambiance is very basic, but it adds to the experience. As others recommended, as did my friend, we ordered the prime rib, butter fish (black cod), and shrimp. All were great choices - big portions, great flavor, and very affordable, and best of all? Ray (the owner) and his customers - awesome "locals" who made us feel welcomed. Depending upon the time of day, Ray is sitting down, "talking story" with his customers. Check out the pictures on the wall and you will see some of the luminaries that visited, to include the current Governor of Hawaii, The prime rib was tender and so tasty; the butter fish was a whole side, not just a small filet (note, it had bones, so take your time); and the shrimp, butterflied and deep-fried. I love this place - it's definitely on my list to visit whenever I'm in Hawaii. CA$H only so plan accordingly. Parking is a challenge as Ray's is located on a major thoroughfare, you will need to get creative in parking on one of the side streets, it may be a pain in the butt, but trust me, it's worth it. read more
Called in to place a pick up order and Ray said it would take about 20 minutes. This place is small and only has a few tables, and of course there's only a few people working so please have patience for the uncles and order ahead if you need it in a timely manner. The food did end up taking a little longer than 20 minutes but it was no problem for us. The owner Ray was very nice and made sure we were okay. We ordered the Prime Rib and the portion is huge. I was able to share it with my boyfriend and we were both stuffed. Next time I might just have to try the ribeye steak with crab legs for $45! read more

Also I can say that ALOT of people from around the WORLD travel to come stop by and EAT at Rays cafe (it's amazing to see different people from all over to drive and come Eat and try this hole in the wall eatery called RAYS CAFE) Service - Service here is GOOD but could be a little challenging when it comes to TAKING PHONE ORDER's But the UNCLES AND AUNTIES that take the phone orders try their BEST to fulfill all Phone orders that all customers call in for. But one thing I can say is that the OWNER "Uncle FELIX" He Always and I say Always TAKE care of his CUSTOMERS" Always greets all customers with a SMILE and a HI & HELLO. FOOD - FOOD here at RAYS CAFE is straight THUMBS UP all around I would say where should we even start from the *Fried Chicken thighs plate *Hamburger Steak plate *Oxtail stew (Thursday specials I believe) *Their FAMOUS PRIME RIB plate (buggah is Massive Aka huge cut) *There Steak & EGGS Is a Go to as well. *Their BENTO MIXED plate is A GOOD ONE as well to order comes with a SPAM, Teriyaki meat, grilled fish, & Fried chicken thighs on a Bed of White rice & Furikake. *Grilled pork chops is good too comes with two big thick pieces of pork chops. These are some of there plates lunch offers and they do offer more as well. Also to say they got DAILY SPECIALS. Let's talk PARKING - Parking Here honestly is challenging but they do offer STREET parking via metered parking (But please be aware of the Street parking signs on times when can park and when cannot park) this is a big HEADS UP. cruising through the old hood after an awesome show at the Farrington HS auditorium. stopped by Rays for some grinds. aunty brought us waters quickly and took our orders. food was ready so quickly. very old school dine in experience. was lucky had room when we went. ran into some friends randomly in the restraunt. I had the shortribs with eggs (eggs more expensive then the steak nowdays) :p just regular comfort food. meat was flavorful liked the Mac with shoyu and Tabasco. everything was ono. the prime rib was thick and perfect. that's a thick cut and alot of meat. took the leftovers home. if you've never tried Rays.. it worth it to give it a go... been around since I was a kid. they relocated here tho. still mayjah. read more

The food is great at Ray's breakfast lunch n dinner. Today we had breakfast ham n eggs easy over comes with toast made from the heart so it taste just like your mom or dad's cooking. The service is great always a good time at Ray's. The ambience is very chill so if you want to have some terrific food everything on the menu is great give them a try. read more
Lunch... Came here on a Sunday with Scott G. I can't believe I have never tried this place. The owner, Ray, is such a nice person. It is a hole-in-a-wall, cash only restaurant with a few tables. We were able to sit down and enjoy our meal there. I had the chicken cutlet with gravy, mac salad and rice which was only $10. That is such a deal for Oahu. The taste was okay. Scott G had the fried chicken wings. Of course I had to try one wing. It was delicious. So many people came in and ordered the prime rib (which I heard was good - only $25 for a huge piece). read more

Great food big portions, service is quick, love the old school vibe to it. I ordered the steak and shrimp combo and the wing dings, steak is huge for its price and the amount of shrimp they added was really great read more

4 of us retirees want to sit in for brunch. Is 9am good time?
Earlier the "BETTER" especially when there's "Prime Rib / Lobster or King Crab Legs" ~ CALL AHEAD to make sure and to check the daily menu ~ Felix never serves the same food week to week so it's worth checking.
Is Ray Cafe fried chicken thighs good? Meaning seasoned well and crunchy?
Yes it is crunchy, juicy and seasoned well. Similiar to Z...y's.
Do they still sell the whole prime rib and how much?
They still sell the whole prime rib, however I forgot for how much. I think it was roughly $250-275
It's 5:40 PM, and the door is closed. Open sign is turned off, are they taking a break or are they done for the day?
Possibly could be done for the day (at times hours varies) best to call before heading down to Rays cafe imo it's the best thing to do
Yelp shows they don't accept credit cards, are the really cash only or do they except other forms, like PayPal or Venmo?
Yup. Cash only. Many of the specials are less than $20 but have huge portions!
Do they serve prime rib every day?
No. Mostly on Fridays, and subsequent days until he runs out. Best thing to do is check his daily menu specials that morning on IG or FB.
Do they offer take out?
Yes they do! The place is really small and unless you want to wait for a seat, your best option is to take out.
Does anyone know if Ray's will be offering whole prime rib for Christmas?

Where is parking?
Street parking only, which can be very difficult to find in that area. Suggest you go with another person and be dropped off. Also, phone in your order so you don't have to wait long.

Did you try calling the Restaurant?? Maybe it was Felix = you know "Ray's Cafe" owner, Happy Birthday?? Lol! Nah I don't know, but it's always good to just call them, right. Aloha!

Same owner. Felix his real name had his restaurant in Downtown Honolulu in the day but relocated to King/Gulick in Kalihi.
I saw they are on Bitesquad now, but I don't see the specials on the Bitesquad menu. Does anyone know how to put a special on your Bitesquad order?
