Simple, straightforward and filling- just what you'd expect from a shack. Beef is tasty tender and black pepper forward. Chicken has almost hulihuli flavors-marinated but not teriyaki. Fresh salad is a nice change. A few small tables with stools available, but all filled during lunch. So take a short walk and find a shady spot in the grass at nearby Ft. DeRussy. A hidden gem next to the Outrigger Reef Hotel on the Beach. There is a path to walk on the right side as you head towards the beach. Once you reach the beach, the Shack will be on your left next to a shave ice place. They serve just three things - steak, chicken, & Kalbi & they even cut it into small bite pieces. We got their steak/chicken combo plate & it was really good. It comes with rice, tossed greens & two choices of dressing - Italian or Ranch. It also comes with a killer teriyaki sauce for the steak. The chicken itself I believe was cooked with that killer sauce. We got here at 4pm & were lucky that there was no line. We passed by around 6:30pm & there was a long line that stretched onto the beach sand. Go early if you can. If I'm in the area again, I'm definitely coming here. read more

Cashier said 20 min wait but it took like 30 min. Luckily for us, we found the perfect place to sit just in time to watch the sunset (picture #2). For the cost of this plate in Waikiki, it does a great job. Pepper steak done right at whatever steak doneness you want. This combined with a salad. I got the ranch dressing and chose to skip it because it tasted like a very generic ranch, homemade ranch would have hit the spot. Instead I just used the teriyaki sauce over my salad. The sliced steak is on a bed of rice, and the salad is in a separate container. It's very, very good, and is reasonably priced as my wife and I shared the plate lunch, and still have some left over. I don't love the salad, it's just a handful of leafy greens straight from a large Costco/Sam's club tub and their ranch doesn't pair too well with it. We got three combo platters for a little over $60, good food but nothing I can go to regularly. If you give this less than a 5 you are criminal and you ordered incorrectly. I did order 2 steaks and spent more than I should have. My wife and I could have just had more steak and shared a salad. Oh well it is delicious. The steak seasoning is great a the salad is basic. This was one of the highlights of the trip for sure. When I had visited they were out of chicken. There is usually a line about 10 to 15 people deep, and once you order it takes another 15 to 25 minutes for your order to be prepared. Steak plate (14 oz) - $23 - I asked for my steak to be prepared medium rare and when my order was finally ready it had a nice peppery flavor to it. They provide some soy sauce on the side to elevate the flavors. I also told them to skip the rice, so they were happy to substitute the rice with more greens. For my greens I went with an Italian dressing, although they also have thousand island. Overall I was impressed with the quality of food here.
