Well, haven't eaten the cake yet so no comment in that regard but be forwarned, don't drive an hour through intense traffic to pick up your $200 cake and have to use the restroom. You'll be instructed to go down the street and use another businesses bathroom though you are "the sweet sides" customer and not the customer of any other. I was told that because an employee has diverticulitis, I wasn't welcome. So come fully toiletted 'cause no matter your circumstance, your need for such basic customer service will not be respected. In celebration of my 32nd birthday, my family got a cake from The Sweet Side. It was a triple decker with three colors of frosting on the exterior, a pink, pale yellow, and blue. The top of the cake had an edible piece with writing saying, Happy Birthday Tanis! Instructions for how to have the cake ready for consumption were noted on the box. It was a beauty of a cake that was tasty as well. The frosting on the exterior was a little firmer than the frosting between the cake layers. Both the exterior and the interior frosting were flavorful, just not in an overly bold way. Textually, it was a little crumbly/chalky which allowed it to melt in my mouth a bit. The cake reminded me a little of cookie dough in taste and held together well. Having leftover cake after our celebration on this past Monday (26 August 2024) it has continued to taste better each day. read more

This place is so cute and the staff is so nice! I ordered a shark cake for my SO's 30th birthday because you're never too old for a shark cake! It was GORGEOUS and I asked for a little bit of writing. I expected some grocery store nice handwriting one the top (which would have been great) but instead got a hand painted sugar saucer! It was seriously pretty. I called and I think it was the owner (don't quote me on that) who helped me but she was soooooo patient to my back and forth on not being sure on the flavor I chose. They prep and order things ahead of time and can't always change things but she was so pleasant with me. FLAVOR: It was really good! The frosting wasn't over sweet and the cake was a combination of moist, flaky and dense in great ratio. The flavors we went with were the chocolate cake and strawberry middle because everyone seemed to review that the strawberry was delicious. Id have to agree! Again, this place is great! We were referred to The Sweet Side by our wedding planners. We spent $996 (including a $125 refundable deposit) on dessert for a small wedding with 30 guests. Leading up to the wedding Mindy was very difficult to communicate with and she repeatedly sent us emails asking for information that had been provided previously (e.g., day of contact, vendor access to venue, etc.). There was also a miscommunication a month before our wedding that resulted in a surprise $110 delivery charge, $55 rental fee, and $125 refundable deposit requirement. If you asked The Sweet Side team, they would say that our planners did not tell them that they needed delivery or rentals in advance of our initial invoice. If you asked our wedding planners, they would say that conversations were had months prior with The Sweet Side team and that delivery and rentals were supposed to be complimentary. For what it's worth, delivery and rentals were included in the initial invoice with a $0 line item. When we asked The Sweet Side to honor their initial invoice and waive the delivery/rental fees, they refused. Since I was not involved in those conversations I can't say whose version of the miscommunication is more correct, but after experiencing firsthand how difficult Mindy is to communicate with I tend to believe our wedding planners. Since it was only a month before our wedding we opted to pay the extra fees rather than try to find a new dessert vendor. Fortunately, the desserts the day of were a much better experience. The desserts were delivered on time and were a big hit. We ordered the predesigned magnolia cake, 8" round, with carrot cake and cream cheese on the inside and buttercream frosting on the outside ($181). It was DELICIOUS and just the right size for our small wedding. We also ordered the "sweet bites bar package" ($525) with French macarons, brownies, and cheesecake shooters. The package is advertised as intended for 50 guests but it was just the right size for our 30 guests. The cake had great texture, the filling was not too sweet, and if you wanted that extra bit of sugary bite, the fondant actually tasted good! It was really sweet, but would balance well when eaten with the cake and filling. I repeat, the fondant was actually good! PRO TIP: as the team suggested to me, let the cake get to room temp before eating... its worth the wait. Extra notes: -my process was done all online (email/website) but they have a cute storefront, as well as a phone number to call. -the team seems very skillful and creative. I worked with the team via email to design one that was in our budget. They came up with 4 designs for us to pick from! The flavor was rich and incredible and we enjoyed it for many days after. It pains me to write this, but please read this to understand. The 1 star is not about their cakes (their cakes are GREAT and delicious!) But in particular ONE PERSON who has made a big enough service impact for me to NEVER RETURN (I didn't get her name, but she answered the phone and is the girl that came out to give me the cake - so in this review her name will be RUDE CHICK) Background: I had my baby shower cake designed by the amazing Tamela that I came to return for a second cake. Tamela was great and designed another beautiful custom cake for me. I prepaid for the cake and called in advance to ask if someone would be willing to step outside of the store to handoff the cake since I was on my own and would have my baby in the car and didn't want to leave her. Tamela was leaving for the day but said it was fine and that someone from the store could help. I called 20 minutes before I was going to arrive to let them know in advance I would be there. RUDE CHICK picked up and I asked if I could give her cash for extra candles since I couldn't come in to make an additional payment to the cake. As soon as I parked RIGHT OUTSIDE the store (with baby in the car) I called back to let them know that I was right outside. The RUDE CHICK explained "We can't take your cash you have to come in for the candles". I explained that I am with baby otherwise I would - so no need for the candles, I'll just pick up my prepaid cake. RUDE CHICK doesn't say anything but "Hold on" - and I'm left waiting for a few minutes while I'm just right outside sitting with baby. RUDE CHICK returns and says "I'm not Tamela, and we don't come out and do this. We are really busy and have a lot of orders to take care of." Unbelievable. I explained that I was already outside, that I called in advance and that I'm not going to leave my baby inside the car to get the cake. RUDE CHICK decided to put me on hold AGAIN. After putting me on hold for about 5 minutes.. she COMES OUTSIDE WITH THE RUDEST RESTING B!@%$ FACE, stares me down and just hands me the cake without saying a SINGLE WORD and walks away as I am talking to her to say "hey, you don't have to be so rude". So whoever that chick was - because of your attitude, AND your lack of customer service AND empathy for mothers.. I will never return for a cake. No matter how great the cakes taste and how amazing/talented/wonderful Tamela is. RUDE CHICK, whoever you are - you need an attitude and empathy check. There are many ways that you can communicate with customers that you might disagree with- but you chose the wrong new mom to mess with. - - - - *UPDATE* shortly after my review was posted- I received a response from her (included here in images). She seems to think it's okay to mom-shame me and forgot that I called in advance and asked if it was okay to have this brought out since I didn't want to leave my baby in the car. I would recommend the Sweet Side to all brides - we had a really good experience. I worked with Mindy for a 2-tiered wedding cake and some additional sweet bites for a dessert bar. She did a great job of answering all my initial questions and worked with me up until after contracting. We got a to-go tasting box and the hard part was narrowing down the two cakes and icings we wanted on the cake. We went with their famous carrot cake and cream cheese buttercream and the almond cake with swiss meringue buttercream. I also ordered their variety pack of bars to try, and they were really yummy too. The only downside of the tasting experience is that they don't offer tasters or anything less than an order of 3 dozen of an particular item off the Sweet Bites menu if you want to try it (i.e., the fruit crisp shooter we ordered for the wedding, we never got to try it beforehand). Being a foodie and a type A person, that was a bit of a bummer and a little risky but not a huge deal. I liked that you could rent beautiful white dessert displays from them - it was one less thing to worry about when planning a wedding and they looked great. My now husband and I were pretty set on a simple design and we sent them a picture of what we liked, and they delivered exactly that! The cake was simple yet still a statement and delicious. I'll admit I am a bit extra when it comes to my girls. Does a 1 year old NEED a custom character birthday cake? No, a regular cake would be fine - not like she's gonna eat it anyway. Welp, there are lots of things that you don't NEED in life but I will dictate what I need and what I don't thank you very much. So back to my daughters extra ass first birthday party. I had the vision in my head of a bubble tea Tokidoki theme as soon as I saw the release of their new characters. Living in Southern California and planning a party in Seattle, I relied very heavy on social media to find the vendors to help me execute. I scoured Instagram for pretty cakes. I came across The SweetSide and off the bat I loved that they were a small business located in Wallingford. I emailed them asking for a quote and giving them a very vague idea of what I had in mind. They were super responsive and before long was exchanging sketches with me. I sent a few examples and tweaks and each time they graciously obliged and made the necessary changes as requested. The entire process was easy, too easy. To be honest the hardest part was deciding on what flavors I wanted the cake to be. I ordered a large 2 tier cake and struggled deciding, partially cuz all of the combinations sounded so freaking delicious. Once I finally made my decision I confirmed design, flavor and pick up date and time, I was able to pay over the phone. Fast forward to pick up day. Walking into the bakery it smelled exactly as you would hope, sweet cakes and sugary frosting! The cake was ready when they promised and holy freaking wow. It came out so adorable. Even better than I had hoped. The backgrounds and characters were so well done, colors were vibrant and just beautiful beautiful. My party wasn't until the following day so I was advised to refrigerate and then take it out a few hours prior to party time. Everything held up perfectly. It hurt my heart a little bit to cut into it and serve it. But that was quickly healed by the deliciousness of the cake. Usually these beautiful cakes are a bit dry and meh, but the cake was moist and had great flavor. Not too overwhelmingly sweet. A few things to note: - They are located right on 45th right near i5, so be cognizant about the limited parking. A custom cake was ordered for my birthday and it was a delicious treat. I requested a chocolate cake with strawberry filling/frosting. Great taste, moist (I hate that word), and a crowd pleaser. The 8" (or 10"?) served 20 ppl easily and there were some leftovers for the kids to take home. In addition, we included a dozen cheesecake shooters with strawberries. Overall, I was happy with the order and was a tiny disappointed on the final design. I will take responsibility for the final design because after I sent them a photo of what I wanted, they quoted the cake to be $155 ish, $80 included the actual embellishments I wanted such as real flowers, macaroons, etc. I asked them to put something together that was $40 worth instead and they gave me sugar molded flowers as a topper. I just couldn't imagine paying $80 for a few flowers and embellishes. I added the "hooray" sign myself that I got off of etsy. The other items shown in the picture were provided by my craft closet. The cheesecake poppers came in a plastic shot glass and a nice small plastic spoon. They were decent and cost around $48 for a dozen. Satisfied with the order and I may order again, tbd. I'll start my saying I am "extra" when it comes to my kids' birthdays. This cake definitely wasn't cheap, but it was definitely worth the price. My daughter turned three last week and insisted on a Bubble Guppies themed party. Since Bubble Guppies has been discontinued for literally ever that presented several challenges. I decided to Google search a "sea themed" gourmet cake and somehow stumbled upon The Sweet Side. I completed my whole order online, got a confirmation email and the cake was ready a week later at my pickup time. Super easy, zero effort on my part. The cake was gorgeous. The handmade details were incredible, the banner with writing on it was beautiful, and not one single person left her birthday party without taking a picture and asking me where I got the cake. I am beyond impressed before we even cut into it. We got a white cake with cream cheese filling. Delicious! It was about 90 degrees for the day and the cream cheese was getting a bit melty, which is totally my fault, but the cake still held together perfectly and tasted wonderful.
