It was fortuitous to be driving southbound on Roosevelt on Saturday morning after 11am (8/5/23), plus snagged a nearby parking spot to check this out. It is always a good sign when there were literally folks walking from all points in the neighborhood and converging at this corner. Loved seeing how the baked goods were all arranged, definitely enticing. I ended up purchasing two lemon bars ($3.50 each), two large chocolate chip cookies ($3 each), and one Key Lime tart ($7.50). I appreciated the care taken to place the items into bags. By the way, the chocolate chip cookies were great with a schmear of Nutella or warmed up and eaten with a scoop of ice cream, respectively. Turns out I have been under a rock as this neighborhood pop up has been in business on Saturday mornings for three years! Later, I enjoyed reading about the business owners and their respective culinary/pastry professional backgrounds via their website (seattlebackyardbakery.com). I love supporting local, indie pop ups and brick and mortars. Seattle's Maple Leaf neighborhood is definitely lucky to have local cafes and bakeshops such as Cafe Javasti, Blue Saucer, Cloud City, Macrina, and Backyard Bakery all within close proximity to each other. I look forward to returning on future Saturdays to try additional sweet and savory items from their product line.

I got a savory scone which was really exceptional - tender and fluffy as a biscuit with a light and crisp exterior and lovely buttery and cheesy savoriness inside with palpable fresh dill. We were greeted by a sincerely welcoming and happy person at the counter. Couple that with really delicious pastries - morning bun with a lovely citrus and cardamom flavor, a flakey and layered croissant, a cinnamon roll with just the right balance of glaze- a perfect start to our day...and the major highlight? They offered the item on both days this weekend and again I missed it on Saturday. I asked the front person what time I should get to the bakery in order not to miss it, and she recommended that I come in right at the opening. She said they ran out of it some time past 11am on Saturday, so it seems like they don't necessarily go flying off the counter immediately. Although I was curious, I still wasn't sure if I'd make it in time for opening at 8am the next day. But I was housesitting nearby and the dog woke me up at 6:30 begging to go on a walk. Not wanting to waste the fact that I woke up early on a Sunday, I decided to not go back to bed but head to the bakery at 8am. I arrived like 2-3 minutes before opening and was surprised to see there were already more than ten people lined up at the bakery. Having worked a retail job, my coworkers and I get annoyed when people start lining up before opening, so I tried my best to arrive right on time. But the line was a bit much. Anyways, I respect that everyone working at the bakery doesn't seem one bit offended by the crowd and are so nice to the customers. Consequently, I'm glad I went for the Maritozzi. It was really good. But if it's this difficult to get one then I probably won't go for it again.

However, The Homie and I made sure to not miss the event hosted during Saint Bread's happy hour on 7/17/22. Scored on nearby parking, got in line pronto on the deck, and thankfully ordered one of each featured item. Good thing too since I later found out that they sold out in 17 minutes! Seems to be a thing at Seattle area pop ups...get used to lining up early and have patience for some potential instant gratification. But it is so worth it when one's efforts supports family run indie businesses! The items sampled were Iced Milo ($7). Took a sip of The Homie's fave...wow, where have I been all these decades?! My childhood included Bosco, Nesquik, and Hershey's syrup. Glad I bought a tin of Milo from my local FilAm shop in Shoreline! The other two items purchased were Pandan Coconut Butter Mochi ($6) and Calamansi Yuzu Cake Cube ($10). I really liked the presentation. Enjoyed the familiar Filipino flavors of pandan, calamansi, and texture of bibingka! I also greatly appreciate that each delicious treat was not overly sweet. With these treats plus some Saint Bread cookies, we had a nice late afternoon treat al fresco by Portage Bay. I got a Thai tea pound cake ($9) and the ube cassava crumble ($7). The Thai tea pound cake was so moist and rich, but not too sweet. The ube cassava crumble was delicious! I had never tried cassava before but the bright colors drew me in. I loved the squishy texture of the cassava cake (almost like mochi) and the crunch of the crumble.

The posted hours were incredibly limited, and at one point I stopped by during posted hours to find it closed. I get that they're likely trying to save money by only being open a few hours a week, but they should at least be open during the few hours that they advertise as business hours.

I liked how they put chocolate chips in the chocolate sponge - it was a nice surprise. I thought the to-go bag system is kind of impractical though. Seeing that the bag they have doesn't have handles, I initially said no to a bag. Then the lady wrapped the dish with the cake slice with a Saran Wrap and handed it over (pictured). I was expecting she put the cake in a container so I was surprised. I knew I wouldn't feel great carrying the cake on the bus like I'm at a cocktail party, so I asked for the brown bag. Maybe this place wants to encourage customers to eat in? They could do a better job with the container, but I might as well come in ready with my own container next time.

Maddy's laminated pastry has a crisp outside that completely shatters when you dig in, which means it's a messy, but delectable treat. The layers are buttery and have a nice chew and the filling combinations are impeccably done. I often think matcha is overrated, but the Matcha Almond Pain Suisse is deliciously nutty with a little bit of grassy notes without being bitter. Seattle Dog Croissant has a very nice quality sausage, but I almost wish more cream cheese to punch you in the face. Cheese and Everything Bagel Seasoning Croissant had a great level of sodium and the cheese had crisped up when it spilled out. IMO Maddy's is better than Petite Pierre, better than Puffhouse, better than La Parisienne. So far, they've had the best pastries I've gotten to try in Seattle.

What we got: - ham and cheese croissant -- not enough filling, and pretty standard Guava Suisse --not enough filling again, good though.
