Today I finally got to try Rosellini's Maritozzi! I knew they have it on random weekends but I never went in early enough to get one myself until today. They offered the item on both days this weekend and again I missed it on Saturday. I asked the front person what time I should get to the bakery in order not to miss it, and she recommended that I come in right at the opening. She said they ran out of it some time past 11am on Saturday, so it seems like they don't necessarily go flying off the counter immediately. Although I was curious, I still wasn't sure if I'd make it in time for opening at 8am the next day. But I was housesitting nearby and the dog woke me up at 6:30 begging to go on a walk. Not wanting to waste the fact that I woke up early on a Sunday, I decided to not go back to bed but head to the bakery at 8am. I arrived like 2-3 minutes before opening and was surprised to see there were already more than ten people lined up at the bakery. Having worked a retail job, my coworkers and I get annoyed when people start lining up before opening, so I tried my best to arrive right on time. But the line was a bit much. Anyways, I respect that everyone working at the bakery doesn't seem one bit offended by the crowd and are so nice to the customers. Consequently, I'm glad I went for the Maritozzi. Accordingly, the hubs researches the best places and this year decided to purchase my requested white cake with chocolate frosting cake from Rosellini's. We were both VERY disappointed at how *extremely, extremely dry* the cake was. I used the melting ice cream to moisten each bite of cake just to swallow (I didn't say anything bc I didn't want to hurt his feelings). After his few bites, my hubs also said "this is pretty dry - isn't it?" Neither of us enjoyed. Two stars for the very tasty chocolate frosting. I ate around the edges - sadly the majority of actual cake itself was disposed. I've read reviews that Rosellini cakes are incredibly moist, so we were unpleasantly surprised. The strong reviews are true. We arrived in the morning between 9:30-10 and the line was a healthy 5 persons deep for the duration of our 0.5 hour stay. Most seating was taken so we sat at the windows. My husband mentioned a cute little courtyard out back but those seats were taken. We were greeted by a sincerely welcoming and happy person at the counter. Couple that with really delicious pastries - morning bun with a lovely citrus and cardamom flavor, a flakey and layered croissant, a cinnamon roll with just the right balance of glaze- a perfect start to our day...and the major highlight? Stopped in to get some macarons to bring to a tea party and they were a hit! I bought one of each for a colorful dozen. I didn't get to try all of them but I had a vanilla and orange one and they were both phenomenal! Perfect little gem of a French bakery in Ballard with reasonable priced, DELICIOUS, fresh baked goods. There's a line every morning that moves quickly so the pastries go quick ! My friend and I went to try their cannelés, which are nice and crisp on the outside and a spongy, custard-like inside. Their special twist is orange zest in the batter! Today, we tried the fresh OJ and the matcha latte with their homemade vanilla syrup. They were both lovely and not overly sweet. Of course the OJ depends on the oranges of the day. My favorite ham and cheese croissant in the area. As a certified savory bread girl it's rough out there when bakeries only have sweet breads - Rosellini's ham and cheese croissant is divine. Unfortunately this is generally their only savory pastry, sometimes there may be one more. If you love sweet pastries you'll generally find chocolate and almond croissants, morning buns, danishes with seasonal fruit... I haven't had a chance to dine in but there are two tables outside on the patio as well as some counter seating by the front window. The service is always wonderful and the women that have worked the front counter when I've gone in are always so friendly and welcoming. It's a super cute spot and a lovely addition to the neighborhood - make sure to get there early on weekends or be prepared to wait in a bit of a line (~10 to 15 mins) read more

I have high standards for croissants so a 3 for me is most likely a 4 for other people. I ordered 4 pastries from here and only 1 out of 4 had the flaky, crunchy layers that I was looking for. The ham & cheese croissant was the most expensive pastry ($6.50) and it barely had any cheese and a tiny slice of ham so it was not worth it. The kouign amann was just kinda sad, dry and soggy. The almond croissant was okay but could have used a bit more filling. The strawberry danish was the best pastry of the bunch. Having lived in Paris I can say that all other PNW croissants except at this place (even the ones billed as authentic) are Americans' ideas of what a croissant is. These are authentic. Everything I've tried here is delicious, but something that I haven't seen as many people buy is the fruit tart. Service is also always great and they move the line very efficiently. A bit disappointing. A good croissant should be flaky and soft. Even a cold one should at least maintain some of the flakiness. The pain au chocolate here is just really sad. As for the koumin Amann, I do understand what they are trying to do. They put sea salt on the top and try to balance the sweetness. But this whole thing is so forced. Their pastries are beautiful, but this review is specifically about the Kouign Amann - it's heavenly! I'd describe it as a carmelized croissant and it's somehow everything you want in pastry all at once! Flaky, soft, crispy, sweet, salty, buttery - it's just perfection! Pretty balanced selection - not a huge set of items, but enough to make your day interesting and provide variety - with both cold case desserts/sweets and traditional baked goods represented. The more "kitchen table" breads such as their baguette are excellent. I have an addictive response to their cheddar-scallion scone, though it might not be a traditional scone to many because it isn't dry and crumbling, but rather nicely soft and with the perfect balance of moisture and flavor. The beverages are good but not the star here, and you may find the service a tad snarky at times, but when that happens I chalk it up to the endless queue of customers that has the staff constantly on their toes on weekend mornings, so are a little on edge at all times, because they are trying to get to everyone as fast as possible. read more

The seating area in back was open and we were able to enjoy the lovely seating area. Now to the important stuff. We had a sampling of 13 different pastries. While I can't review them all due to a lack of patience, I will mention my two favorites. For a savory option, the spinach and feta pastry was delectable. It was cooked to perfection, flaky, and had the perfect amount of filling. For a sweet option, the apple pastry was phenomenal.
