The store is very cute - with a great variety of cold pies, and a wall full of sweets and treats (chocolates, crackers, chips, etc). They also offer a variety of frozen pies that you can store at home and warm up when you need a quick dinner later in the week. Super convenient! First pie we tried was the steak, ale and mushroom pie. Let me just tell you we went across the street, sat on a park bench and ate the whole thing!!! It was just that damn good!! Being from the South I'm a big fan of pot pies -- and The Pie Store makes savory pies on steroids. My favorite is the steak and mushroom -- but they are all good. My vegetarian friends love the chick pea (and so do i). All the pies are freshly made -- with the perfect crust of buttery pastry. Many days if I'm running around I stop by for the pastie (think great filling wrapped in yummy pastry) and they will heat it up. This place caught me by surprise. I was not expecting the reaction that came from the family. All agreed it was like your grandmother worked in the back of this place and knew you were coming lol. The price is high but it's worth every cent. Seriously it is. First time there I got the pulled pork Pastie. Hooked. Since I've tried the turkey stuffed with stuffing assorted Thanksgiving favorites, the Lamb and feta as well as the usual store regulars. The pies are just as delicious. Each one looks different (even when the same type) and it's immediately obvious the level of professionalism in each one. The Apple/Blueberry mix is my favorite. And you really don't feel disgusting after eating it because it's actually fruit inside and not just jelly filling. I don't leave many reviews but this one felt like it am deserved it. Most of the year, I go there for meat pies - like Shepherd's Pie or Cornish Pasties. During the holidays, I go there for homemade mince pies (best ever) and imported Christmas Pudding. This store carries homemade sweet and savory pies. We have mostly had the savory ones. So good. Indian curry and a meat pie. So good. Also a key lime pie once, also good. But go for the savory ones. They also carry some other things that are usually harder to find in the US, most from Great Britain, some from other areas in the Eurozone. Nothing here is cheap, but I bet its all good. Worth it. This place smells amazing before you even walk in; makes you want to buy everything!! My boyfriend and I celebrated our Thanksgiving early, and came here to get their apple pie. The crust was amazing! Even though it was a bit pricey, he really enjoyed it. He loved the crust and the texture of the apples! My neighbor raves about this place so I tried it Had a chicken pot pie and a blue berry pie, both were not good at all Chicken pot pie had a bad seasoning and a thick dry crust, very dry. Love love love the pie store! The second you walk in you're hit with the delicious aroma of freshly baked pies. I usually come on nights when I don't want to make dinner since the pies are delicious and very quick to heat up (about 20 min for the large pasties). They also freeze very well, so my freezer usually has a couple in there just in case. My favorites are the pasties, though the pies give them a good run for their money. For the price you get a lot of pasty. One of the big pasties feeds me and my boyfriend. My favorite flavors are: sweet potato and blue cheese, cornish, and lamb and feta. They also carry my all time favorite sweets: Kinder Happy Hippos. Soooo good. Oh! And get some scones while you're there too. The strawberry scone is delicious! I've been here on 3 separate occasions and I've managed to try 4 different pies - the steak, ale, and mushroom pie, the chocolate mousse pie, the coconut cream pie, and the banoffee pie. To start off, the steak, ale, and mushroom pie is not my favorite. The buttery and flaky puff pastry top crust is the best part, but the filling falls flat. It could use some more seasoning or spices, so unless you want to add your own or enjoy bland food, avoid this one. The Pie Store offers so many other more appealing savory pies. The chocolate mousse pie is pretty good. Same with the coconut custard pie. I'd suggest getting a smaller size, as they can get pretty heavy after a while. The banoffee pie is hands down my favorite. Banoffee is kind of hard to find in these parts, but the Pie Store makes the most amazing version, complete with a flaky, crumbly biscuit crust, entire slices of bananas, caramel toffee filling, light whipped cream, and chocolate shavings on top. They only sell is on the weekends in limited quantities, though, so be sure to call ahead and request in advance​. In summary, the Pie Store brings a unique British flair to Montclair, with various novelty British items sold on various shelves in the front of the store and British pies. Parking is limited with only 4 or 5 spaces that are shared with other businesses in the front, so be wary. Additionally, only large pies come with double crusts. Smaller sizes only have a top layer crust. I'll be back to try other pies, both savory and sweet, in the future. read more

One of the really cool things about NJ is not just that we are so close to Manhattan, but that we have these little cultural gems hidden throughout all of the state. One of these gems is The Pie Store in Montclair. The Pie Store carries all sorts of delicious pies (both savory and sweet pies) made fresh. Some of my favorites include the steak & ale pie, which comes with big chunks of beef and potatoes baked under a delicious flaky crust, and the cornish pasty, which is a classic stuffed pastry filled with veggies and meat. The special part of all the pies that come from this location is the crust, which is buttery, flavorful, and has a classic texture. The soups are wonderful too - the gazpacho being my personal favorite. Another plus of this store is the grocery section, filled with candies, condiments, sides, and all other types of non-perishable UK goodies. Cadbury chocolates, wine gums, branston pickle spread, marmite, and even the hard-to-find vegemite (as of the last time I visited) are available for purchase. This place is amazing.. A little expensive but what you get is homestyle sweet and savory pies.. My only issue with them is we got a thanksgiving leftover pie last year and it had giant chunks of chicken in it.. we found ourselves having to dissect the whole thing and it became a giant mess.. All they needed to do was take some time instead of being lazy when making.. I understand we may have caught them on a off day since everything else we got was always good but something like that has put doubt in our heads when we are deciding where to eat on a given night. We had a large apple pie for a gathering. All our gusts enjoyed the pie. The crust is so delicious and the apple pieces were still crisp in the middle not like others with soggy apple laying in a goo. We had some savory ones last week and BBQ pork was especially good. I have been going to the British Pie Store since they were on Bloomfield Ave. Most of the sweet and savory pies are delicious--the steak and cheddar, lamb and feta, key lime and bannoffee, etc. Some of the savory pies have large chunks of dry meat. The British woman who I've seen and interacted has always been kind, pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately, I am giving them 3 stars instead of 5 because the counter staff has been repeatedly rude and unpleasant with really poor basic customer service skills. My friends and I have all had negative interactions with the help at the counter. The very nature of going to a pie store should be a pleasant experience! read more

My family and I stubbled upon the pie store by accident. Despite the fact that everything we have tried is delicious; we will not be returning. I just left the establishment and behind the counter was a gentleman with his mask around his chin, grabbing scones without gloves or paper. Five stars because the staff is seriously *amazing*. Will work with you to accomodate almost any order. Hankering for a Brit-delight? They don't carry it? Don't worry...inquire as to its whereabouts, they will track it down, *or* if you want something in bulk...they will place an order with the manufacturer... seriously. It might take a few months to arrive (or never, depending upon manufacturer/distributor restrictions..)... but they have delivered CASES of British soda before, amazingly enough. Pies - savory or sweet - are indulgent and delicious...and as corny as it sounds, I feel like it's because they are made with a little love. Really. Made from scratch pies that are fresh and constantly changing takes a hell of a lot of effort from the approximate 5 or so employees I see working here. For Easter, they had orders out the whazoo.....the Thursday before Easter, I needed a pie for the fam..., obviously the traditional Italian Ricotta-pie is out of the question, so I went with the intent to for a fruit pie, and to trick the majority of my family who thinks I can actually bake (ha, yeah right.) The Steak and Mushroom Pie w Brown Ale brought me to rapture. All the pies I've tried here are excellent. The dessert pies are gently tart rather than sickly sweet - a perfect way to follow the savory meat pies. Also, The Pie Store is well-stocked with British provisions. Excellent spot. 1) This place has tons of British-Indian pies: chicken tikka pie (small & very expensive at 16 USD) and chicken madras pie (large and very adorable at 8 bucks). 2) They have a large selection of British chocolates: Crunchie (excellent honeycomb toffee bar), Cadbury Flake (ok), Nestle Toffee Crisp (good), Smarties (good, but I like M&M better). 3) They also have soft drinks from the British Isles: Club Rock Shandy (excellent Irish soda), Irn Bru (Scotland's national drink after whiskey), and Tizer (British soda). 4) Next time I will get the Banoffee pie and Key Lime pie. read more

We were in the neighborhood and passed by on a whim, then ended up buying three of their savory British pies. I don't have much experience with British food, this was my first foray into their cuisine. We took home a large Steak, ale and Mushroom pie and a small chicken tikka pie. The pies were pricey, around $15 for the small ones, almost $30 for the large. The crusts were cooked perfectly and they were assembled very well. But the steak pie wasn't at all what we were expecting. Cutting into it revealed giant chunks of steak that we had to shred ourselves. The mushrooms for whatever reason didn't incorporate and sat at the bottom of the pie. The pie was mostly meat, which on on the one hand is good because it's the most expensive product, but it was very one note. The pie also tasted like it hadn't been seasoned at all, so we added a generous amount of salt and pepper. I personally liked the chicken tikka pie better, though it was more chickpea than chicken. The spices were nice, gentle, fragrant. Service was absolutely fantastic, the woman behind the counter who was rolling out crusts talked to us a bit about the products they sell as well as the pies, and wrote the reheating times for each pie on the box. But there's a chance I just might not be a fan of British food, so while I didn't really dig what I ordered I'm giving them three stars for service and quality ingredients. read more

A throwback to my trips to England and eating at some of my favorite pie shops, this place is a piece of London in Montclair. With a variety of delicious choices and and sizes you easily want to get one of everything and hide in a corner and not be bothered. The steak & ale pie was out of this world. I took it home and toasted it for a couple of minutes and when you open it you just want to yell "God save the queen!" It's that yummy! But wait there's more... Let's take a moment and talk about the scone. Typically a scone is a hit or a miss. Can be very dry and hard to the point where you can use it as a weapon. Not at The Pie Store. At The Pie Store the cheddar scone is OUT OF THIS WORLD! It's very cheddary (not a word, but it's the best to describe the amount of cheddar in this scone) and the best part is that it taste like crispy cheddar like the corners of a grilled cheese sandwich done right where the cheese came out and it is oh so very crispy and delicious.
