We were in the neighborhood and passed by on a whim, then ended up buying three of their savory British pies. I don't have much experience with British food, this was my first foray into their cuisine. We took home a large Steak, ale and Mushroom pie and a small chicken tikka pie. The pies were pricey, around $15 for the small ones, almost $30 for the large. The crusts were cooked perfectly and they were assembled very well. But the steak pie wasn't at all what we were expecting. Cutting into it revealed giant chunks of steak that we had to shred ourselves. The mushrooms for whatever reason didn't incorporate and sat at the bottom of the pie. The pie was mostly meat, which on on the one hand is good because it's the most expensive product, but it was very one note. The pie also tasted like it hadn't been seasoned at all, so we added a generous amount of salt and pepper. I personally liked the chicken tikka pie better, though it was more chickpea than chicken. The spices were nice, gentle, fragrant. Service was absolutely fantastic, the woman behind the counter who was rolling out crusts talked to us a bit about the products they sell as well as the pies, and wrote the reheating times for each pie on the box. But there's a chance I just might not be a fan of British food, so while I didn't really dig what I ordered I'm giving them three stars for service and quality ingredients. read more

Absolutely the best pie store ever! We cannot have enough of their steak and cheddar pie! My only complain is their hours are short. We came here on a Sunday afternoon for dessert pie & left with a cheese scone, cream of mushroom soup & a savory sweet potato + blue cheese pie...OK! we did at least sample the apple pie which was pretty awesome. This place carries quite a few authentic/imported British goods, canned foods, confections & beverages as well has freshly baked scones, pies & dinner pies. There are no seats, so you should order everything to go; however i do believe they will heat up soups for you. It's a nice experience, the owner head baker is in the back hand peeling roughly 1 million apples, which shows you she is dedicated and probably crazy. The mood is relaxed and the music is on...on. They have a holiday menu for Thanksgiving (probably one for Christmas) which has a list of specials and trays of food that you can order in advance. Will definitely be back here!! The Pie Store has saved me any number of times. Last minute guests? Steak and Ale pie with some sausage roll-up thingies. Or a shepherd's pie. (Not for me, but the blue cheese pastries are excellent, too!) Thank you gift? A $9 fruit pie. Big Thank You? A $20 fruit pie. Need a treat? Portuguese style custard cups. Feeling blue? Pick some chewy or chocolaty treat. Feeling a little under the weather? Soups! They have a smaller selection for vegetarians, but the ones they have are delicious. For Christmas Eve we got a coconut pie at the last minute because there were actually being finished as I was paying - absolutely amazing. I have passed this store so many times over the years, and after a friend recommended it I finally went in . My only regret is not having stopped in sooner. The home baked savory pies are out of this world. The biscuits unbuttered won't last the car ride home, I have the crumbs to prove it. I have tried the pie store twice. The first time they were sold out of most of the options listed but what I did get to buy was good. Today was my second try here and it was very disappointing. Their small pies are not in fact pies. They're more of a cobbler. The two small pies I bought today had no crust on the sides or bottom, just a lattice on the top. That's not a pie. Also both fillings were horribly tart and had no sugar in them as far as we could tell. Most of them were thrown out. No one was impressed. Overpriced, waste of time. I swear I'm so lucky to work in Montclair. I was 17 when I first saw this place and for 3 years I was dying to try something. I DON'T KNOW HOW I WENT WITHOUT THE PIE STORE FOR SO LONG!!! I just left the store about 2 hours ago and got myself a box of PG Tips (my favorite tea) a couple beverages (for my friend and I) and of course 2 Pasties. It's a very small store but it feels inviting and it's like you left the States when you walk in. Forget about flying out to England to have a pasty, chocolate and most things in between, this place is amazing. Not to mention the lady that attended me was super nice. You can't go wrong with the options they have. I HIGHLY Recommend this place. Don't have a car, take the train to Watchung Ave and it's next to the station. Any store that sells just pies is going to get an A in my book. As soon as I saw "Pie Store" pop up on my phone screen, I knew I had to check it out. A small store that sells a variety of novelty snacks/candy, but most importantly, home-made pies (savory AND sweet). I had no idea that it was British, so I was expecting a whole bunch of American pies, but when I walked into the store, I had no problem with what they carried. All sorts of savory pies, such as Chicken & Vegetable pies, Sausage rolls, Steak pastries, Chicken & Curry pies, etc. As for sweets, they had Mixed Fruit pies and Apple pies. It's a tiny store and got kind of crowded with 4 customers, but it's cool to watch the workers make the pies right in front of you as you wait. Their kitchen is completely exposed and open, and you can see them rolling the dough and making the pies, so you KNOW it's fresh. So my boyfriend and I got the Chicken & Vegetable Pie, Sausage Roll, and Mixed Fruit Pie. (1) Chicken & Vegetable Pie - kind of like a Chicken Pot Pie but definitely less salty and the typical American ones I've had, and more chunky pieces of chicken and vegetables. It was a little bland because I'm so used to the salty ones, but it was hearty. (2) Sausage Roll - I really liked it because I love sausage (get your mind out of the gutter, guys) and I love the puff pastry it comes wrapped in. It's breakfast sausage though, so if you're not a fan of that (like my bf), then you probably won't like it. (3) Mixed Fruit Pie - I absolutely loved the crust. Slightly sweet and great texture. Lots of tangy fresh fruit, so it's not incredibly sweet. I definitely want to try the apple pie next because the mixed fruit pie was slightly too tangy for me, but still delicious. Ate very bit of it. Go support the store and indulge in some pies. A bit expensive but remember you're probably paying for fresh, quality ingredients and home-made goodness. :) read more

I was on a quest for a fresh key lime pie and a fresh bb pie. The shop was tucked into a corner so finding it was a little tricky. Very welcoming inside with fragrant fresh baked pie smell emanating. I bought a key lime pie and fresh, still warm apple/bb pie. Pricey at $27 for med kl pie and med appl/bb. The warm pie was good, crust was crunchy, soft. The bb/apple was a misnomer it was really an apple pie sprinkled with bb. It was good but its not apple season, I wanted fresh bb. Oh well. The Key lime pie was..... not so great. I've had many and know a good one. This one was too dense and had no real key lime flavor/taste. I was dissapointed. This is it. The BEST I've ever had. From the Pasties to the key lime pies. Just remarkable. But let's talk savory. The turkey stuffing pie is as close to food nirvana as you will get. Layers of thanksgiving dinner including the cranberry sauce baked with a flaky crust. It is perfection in a pie tin. This place is very expensive and that would be fine if the quality matched the cost but unfortunately that is not the case. I got a quart of soup for 7 dollars and after two spoonfuls it gave me indigestion. I got sheperds pue for my girlfriend which was 14 dollars and when i served it to her it was so greasy she dry-heaved. Also the older lady manning the counter was a little short with me. If you're going to charge more than a restaurant for your food you should at least be nice or just make it taste good enough to be worth the cost. They do have some neat candies that I haven't seen before. Nothing japanese or foreign as far as I could tell though. If you're walking by check it out I guess or if your buddy loses a bet where they've gotta buy dinner then pick this place if you're feeling spiteful. I lived in Montclair for years and never tried this place. Its a hidden gem. The Chicken Tikka is my favorite. The chicken pot pie is also good. Went here on the recommendation of other Yelpper reviews, it's a hit! Brought the key lime pie (large, $24.95) to a friends gathering. Everyone loved it. It's a creamy consistency with no odd, metallic aftertaste like some gelled key like pies have. Great balance of tart and sweet. Had a chocolate chip scone (larger sized, $2.25) - very good. Not overly sugary sweet. Very true to a genuine scone recipe. Also tried the BBQ pulled pork pasty ($6.75) they heated it in the oven so it could be enjoyed on the go and the crust was to die for. Buttery, flaky, but NOT greasy. Absolutely heaven. Will go back to try the sausage roll, cream of mushroom soup and the steak/cheese pasty. Another trip will be needed. read more

Excellent! I've been there before but not in a while. Went there to get an apple pie on Christmas Eve. The young blonde girl working was so delightful. So I went to The Pie Store in Montclair this morning, thinking I would get myself a Cornish Pastie. I'm the only customer in there and I'm walking around for a good five, maybe ten minutes looking at stuff. There's four people behind the counter. Not a single one says anything to me. Pretty much pretends I'm not there. The last time I was there, I got no service either and it's a tiny store with just two aisles so it's not like you could wander around and not be seen. No one spoke to me until I approached them to ask if they had sticky toffee pudding (which they didn't). Funny enough, as soon as an older white guy walks in, he immediately gets a "Good Morning, how can I help you?" Mind you, he was dressed pretty casual too so it wasn't a "class" thing. I don't know about you, but I find it funny that the white customers got immediate attention while I'm left to roam about like I don't exist. Just sayin'. I was going to buy something but left with nothing because I'm not going to give my hard earned money to a place that obviously doesn't want it. Not to mention, they're overpriced. read more
