Chip City is a franchise that specializes in baking cookies with a soft, gooey center. The Montclair location is on a busy main street. Street parking is difficult to find during peak hours. It's conveniently open until 1AM on weeknights and 3AM on weekends! When I walked in, I couldn't get over how cute and bright the store was. It's small with very limited seating. To whoever is in charge of the marketing, design, and logos... kudos to you! A very sweet and friendly employee answered all of my questions and helped me out. Since I came much later in the evening, I was worried there wouldn't be that many cookies available, but I was wrong. There were plenty AND they were still fresh too! They offer classic flavors as well as seasonal and specialty ones. Flavors are rotated weekly and you can check the website for the line-up. Dairy free options are available. There's a ton of creative flavors, so don't miss out! In addition to regular cookies, they also sell crookies (croissant/cookie hybrid), cretzels (croissant/pretzel/cookie hybrid), ice cream, and merchandise! Each cookie is around $5+, but trust me... they are dense, large, and can be shared with other people. Did I want to buy 4? Yes... but I have self control (sometimes) LOL, so I stuck with buying a classic Cookies N' Cream. It has a buttery sugar cookie base loaded with crushed chocolate cookie sandwiches and creamy white chocolate - basically tastes like an Oreo milkshake! I tried chip city based on the recommendation of a friend who is obsessed with this place. The staff was very kind and helpful when i needed recommendations to decide which cookie flavor to try. People seem to take their orders to go but there are some seats if you want to sit inside and enjoy your treats before heading home. I tried the Brookie which is a brown sugar cookie with chocolate chip swirls and a brownie base. It was super rich and indulgent and super tasty. As I walked around Montclair with a friend we couldn't resist stopping in. We shared the captain crunch cookie which we both felt was more like a cake texture than a cookie and didn't really love it. How can a chocolate chip cookie be both chewy and dry at the same time? The cookie was at least a half-inch thick, which was impressive, and tasted like a standard chocolate chip cookie, but it turned to something with the texture of cornstarch in my mouth. Chip City - yet another cookie specialty shop making its way to the masses! I've seen these pop up here and there, and was excited to try their offerings. The shop is small - but after all, how much room do you need to sell cookies? - and does offer some seating. The cookies are all on display for you to see. It seems like the have seasonal flavors in rotation, which is nice. However, I did not realize that these are large, dense, soft-baked cookies as opposed to a more traditional homestyle cookie. These are not my preference for cookies, but hey, I'll try any chocolate chip at least once. They do, however, offer more traditional cookies marketed as 'Thin Chips,' and I am certain I would enjoy those better, but this particular shop did not have many available. There were only four on display - one in each flavor plus an extra - and when I asked if that was all they had, the sales rep just nodded her head and didn't offer any other alternative or advice. A little disappointing, but not the end of the world. So...$5.50 per cookie is steep. However, if it's tasty, I don't mind paying the price. The verdict? The chocolate chip cookie is (in my opinion) solid. Again, I am not the biggest fan of these dense, soft-baked cookies, so I can definitely be bias. But IMO, if you can't make a solid chocolate chip cookie, I can't trust you. The cookie itself is soft and chewy with a thin, crispy exterior. Although their marketing suggests SERVE WARM (its on all of their boxes), I found that I enjoyed it better eating it cold the next day because the complex flavors really came through. (A good thing!) The cookie has a nice buttery vanilla flavor with semi-sweet chocolate chips. Honestly, these big ol' choco chippers are WAY BETTER than what Crumbl has to offer (IYKYK), and so for that, I commend them. I wouldn't seek this cookie out, but I would order it again if I am ever in the area. So far, Insomnia Cookie still holds the trophy for being my favorite of these mass-marketed cookies - do what you will with that information! read more
