What a surprise!. When this place opened, I questioned the logic. There are cheap burgers and In-N-Out Burger right up the street. There's a classic burger at Chuck box right down the street. There's rehab therapy in South Scottsdale for a fancy stuff. For fancy stuff. How on Earth would this fit in? I was so surprised at how great it turned out. These burgers hit way above their weight. It was hard to believe that it's part of a chain out of California. Everything came out with such care. I had the double original, and a patty melt. Each had their own unique flavor, but each one was unbelievably, juicy and tasty. This place deserves a lot more hype than it's getting. The location has to be very expensive, and I'm sure it empties out during the summers. I pray it lasts. Eating one of their burgers is like Tinkerbell: every time a customer purchases a burger there, a cardiologist buys a new Mercedes. Their food is that good. Sinfully good. In Tempe for an early morning appointment, I didn't have time to eat something before leaving Whistlestop... and by the time I was out of my appointment, I was ready for a cup of joe and something to eat. First of all, I don't know what it is about their shakes, but Inwas just going to drink water when I smelled someone's shake being made. Yes, smelled it. It didn't take much convincing and I ordered a strawberry shake As good as the shake was, my Meltburger was kinda like seeing Star Wars for the first time: explosions of taste, this and that, culinary chaos (in a good way), fireworks going off in my mouth. My stomach growled its approval, causing alarmed mothers to grab their kids. Attacking that huge burger was like the Normandy invasion... not at all pretty, an assault for the books. History in the making. To be fair, I was a complete gentleman, quietly eating my repast, but on the inside, it was like flying down the alley to hit the exhaust port of the Death Star... sheer excitement. Yes, it was that good. No, excellent. Oh hell, it was probably the best burger I've had -- certainly the best I've had in a very long time. Superlative. The burgers weren't bad, but they weren't good. Just average. I wouldn't go out of my way to get them again. My wife had the patty melt. It was decent. But it wasn't even served on rye bread, which is customary. I do t believe there were grilled onions on it either. I had the spicy mission burger. I wasn't a fan. Very average. It would've been better with pickled jalapeños, not raw ones. You ordered at the counter and your buzzer went off when your food was ready (heated up). The croutons are actually NOT little grilled cheese. They're just regular croutons with very little hard caramelized cheese on top. Salad is very mediocre. Lettuce, parm, croutons. I also got a side of the Mac and cheese. ALSO very mediocre. Tastes like microwave Mac and cheese. We added jalapeños thinking they would be cooked in the cheese and they were just placed on top.
