Finally got to try the famous Chuck Box! And it was so good. They take cash only, and I think cash only places could be either sooo good or meh, and this place is definitely so good. Simple is the best, their burger and food isn't like fancy, yet classic and so good. I personally think it's the hardest to make food good without too much sauce and things, so this place must know what they're doing. Burger was juicy and their zucchini fries!! Definitely going to be one of my go-to burger spot

This was my second time here while visiting the area. If you are looking for "just" a really good burger, stop in to then Chuck Box. It's a bit Smokey but that's all part of the experience. Buyer beware- it's cash only but they have an ATM. I had the Great Big One, onion rings, and iced tea. The last time I had then Tijuana Torpedo and loved it but wanted to try something else. Service and Ambiance all fit the vibe.

Old school and not updated but a great nostalgic, vibe! Basic burger menu and very fresh! Large do it yourself condiments bar in the middle of the restaurant. There is no service, order in line and they cook to order.

Working at ASU, this place is as embedded in Tempe as Old Main. It's simple, crowded, overwhelming, and perfectly homey. It's cash only, as a heads up. But the food is pure comfort. Reminiscent of the family BBQs during summer, it's a chargrilled burger with incredible toppings. I got the Tijuana Torpedo, half/half mushrooms and zucchini, and onion rings. Everything was cooked to perfection. I loved that I could put on the toppings. And the ranch is amazing to dip in. Big fan of this place and can now see why it's an iconic spot off the Tempe campus.

The Chuckbox is a great no-frills stop for a solid, flame-grilled burger. It's a simple concept done right, order at the counter, grab what you want from the self-serve condiment bar, and enjoy the old-school wood-paneling vibe while watching burgers cook over an open flame. It's cash only, but totally worth it. I had a good, classic burger and the breaded mushrooms, which were even better dipped in ranch from the condiment bar. They also have beer on tap, which is a nice bonus. We stopped here on the way to the airport and it was the perfect, quick stop before our flight. Would definitely come back.

Friends say we're going to Chuck Box. Ok. Get there around 1pm at ASU. The place is busy, small, old and I can't wait! Got to order within 15 minutes of arriving. Not bad! Ordered double cheeseburger onion rings and mixed zucchini and mushrooms. Then take burger to the condiments table. Really nice! Fried food was ok (a little greasy) but the burger was superior. Cooked on charcoal fire grill. Really enjoyed flavor. For a place to be here since 1972! There's a reason, it's good. Worth the trip.

I worked in Tempe for six years but never got around to trying the Chuck Box until tonight. It is a small dive that only accepts cash. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings. I ordered the exact same thing at Shake Shack this week. Chuck Box was way better. They cook the food in front of you and have a stand where you can get tomatoes pickles mustard ranch any condiment you want. A very enjoyable experience.

Little One Burger with added toppings and Chuckbox Potatoes

We had a nice early dinner at The Chuck Box. I had never been before but my husband remembered it from college days. The place was very old school and once you got out of the car you could smell the delicious burgers cooking. It was so cool to see a toppings bar that included ranch! I got the Little One and it was a great first size for me. But man, next time I'm going for The Big One which has a sesame seed bun and of course, a bigger burger. My husband got the Great Big One and that looked really tasty. We also ordered Chuckbox Potatoes. Basically fries but tasted much fresher and a perfect amount of salt. Don't forget cash only! There is an ATM if you forget. And the seats are like milk boxes and are perfect for a fun ambiance. The staff are great and will help answer your questions as you go through the line before eating. I will be back for a bigger burger and to try their homemade root beer.

Chuck Box has long been ranked as one of the top burger joints. My coworker and I have even driven 30 minutes from Chandler just to eat there. That said, they really need to fix their air conditioning. I was there yesterday, and it was unbearably hot and humid inside. The AC clearly wasn't working well, and it made the whole experience uncomfortable. As much as I enjoy the food, the heat completely took away from it. Great burgers, but until they sort out the AC, I might hold off on going back.

Stopped here for din din. I love the smell of a grill! This grill is cool, as it lifts up, in which, the staff add coal underneath it, and then, they pull it back down using a wheel, which looks like it belongs to a water well. It's actually pretty cool to watch! The major cook (bossman)was awesome, as he joked around with us and was a down to earth and nice human. I had the 1/3lb burger with the onion rings which the onion rings are !!! I didn't like that the cashier treated me like a college kid by giving our onion rings to someone who came in way after us, in which, they had to make a whole new order but then, he lied about it... dude..REALLY!!! (Side eye) This didn't sit right with us because, I wanted to eat all of my food together and not in stages. I liked that they have minute maid lemonade and not that light crap. Stop with the diet foolery already for restaurant's who sell fast food but have diet drinks. ‍ Parking is scarce but, you're really getting in and out quickly, therfore, it's worth stopping in to grab and go! We ate inside in which, it feels as if you're eating inside of a barn or old saloon from a movie which is pretty cool.

First time customer, they freshly make your burger in front of you flame grilled. There is a nice size condiment bar, fries were perfectly seasoned (salt only). I got The Little One that is 1/5 LB. perfect size for kids or lighter appetites. My son ordered The Big One 1/3 LB. with green chile they use whole green chiles and grill them also. It is a CASH ONLY establishment but there is an ATM in case you need it. The guys grilling the burgers and taking orders were very nice. I asked them to grill mine well done, that was not a problem. It's an older building with a rustic feel, at the table you sit on old wooden milk crates instead of chairs. I do think you should know that the parking lot is very small.

I enjoyed the experience of ordering most. Cafeteria style ordering was a different vibe from most restaurants. You get to watch the burgers and chicken cook on the flame grill. This is a cash only business which was refreshing. The burger was good. There is a condiments bar in the center of the restaurant that is self-serve. Ketchup, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions and more to hook your sandwich up. Dim lighting and box seats at the table to dine was cool.

Quality/Quantity - Simple menu done well. Also made fresh to order. And fairly quickly, especially for made to order food. The Big One - burgers, we got two of these. The Little One - burger, I was surprised that my daughter ordered this...? As she is usually a bigger eater than me. We also got the zucchini, mushroom, and onion rings. All of which was good and made fresh to order. Atmosphere - Small local business. Not the most comfortable seating, see both indoor and outdoor pictures. This also helped with quick/fast turn around for the few tables they have. The two restrooms outside could use a remodel. Very small parking lot; we walked. Service - Counter service. Self service drinks and condiment bar, see pictures. Also bus your own tables. Complimentary self service water. Price - $42, cash only. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1972.

I haven't been here in 45 years. Burgers still have the char flavor. Reasonably priced, fast and friendly service and the same rustic feel.

Great staff, high-quality food, and a genuinely welcoming vibe--definitely a 5-star experience at the Tempe location!

I will say they don't seem to skim on salad ingredients either - - the Philly salad was covered with shaved beef, and my berry salad had a lot of chicken and tons of blue cheese. The fries were delicious - - slightly seasoned and crispy. This place is clearly dog friendly. In fact the day we went there was a sweet Pitbull named Daisy who literally hopped up on a bar stool and sat there like a little angel the entire time. The bar had a dog full of water that they sat down on the counter next to her owner's beer. They also have dog biscuits to give.
