On a busy Saturday night, he graciously allowed us to push it back by an hour, which we really appreciated. When we arrived, we were immediately impressed. The jungle theme, leopard prints, intimate booths, and dramatic overhead lighting created a fun, unique atmosphere. The service was excellent, the cocktails were delicious, and every dish we ordered was a hit. My son said it may have been the best steak tartare he's ever had (although neither of us was a fan of the plantain chips). It was certainly the best tartare I've had in a very long time, with generous chunks of high-quality steak instead of being overly minced. The baked brie dip was outstanding, the grilled oysters were excellent, and my New York strip was cooked perfectly. My only small criticism is that the oyster appetizer came with just three oysters. For a $19 appetizer, I'd love to see at least four. An even number also makes sharing much easier, although my son generously let me have the extra one! Our final verdict after dining at Filthy Animal steakhouse in Tempe, Arizona, on a Sunday night after seeing The Odyssey at Harkins nearby: High Aura. We called about half hour before and made a reservation by phone. I was disappointed that my first order choice of the Seabass was unavailable and my second choice of lamb chops was also unavailable. Not sure if this is because it was a Sunday night and/or we made the reservation immediately before showing up. They were also out of the Melted Cast-Iron Brie Small Plate that we were excited about ordering for the table. We loved this restaurant because of the dark and jungle-themed interior. We were excited to see the bold taxidermy featuring the large cats combined with the ornate, gold- framed dapper animal art hanging on the walls. Another reason to love this spot: hidden inside is an entrance to a secret cocktail lounge, or speakeasy, called "Drop Dead Gorgeous." We also appreciated the entire restaurant centering around a glowing, raw wood-fire cooking pit. We could hear and watch our entrées being prepared. What we didn't love so much: the items that we would've liked to have ordered were unavailable. The price to portion ratio in the small bites could also be improved a bit. Great service from our waitress throughout the evening. We ordered: - Fire Roasted Bone Marrow for the table (3/5) - sourdough toast, jalapeño marmalade with demi. I was so excited to try bone marrow for the first time. It was interesting. Sort of like a mix between butter and fat from a steak. It tasted really good with the spicy jalapeño jelly and bread provided. I expected us to be warm and it came out cold. Still not sure if I like it or not. We had actually changed our mind right after initially putting in the milk bread order for the table and they brought out the milk bread so quickly that our waitress said she would give this to us on the house. - Milk Bread for the table (4/5) - miso tomato butter, almond & Kalamata. Even though we changed our mind and got this sent to our table accidentally, I would order this again. It was very delicious and it comes out as an adorable little tomato shaped and colored milk bread with the toppings looking like the stem on top. So tasty and everybody loved it. A little small for our party of five. - Lemongrass Half Chicken (5/5) - Caramelized carrots, kyoto roasted garlic, mashed potatoes & jalapeno jam. Hubs loved this. He said everything was delicious and went well together. - Bomba Rice x2 (5/5) - Risotto, shrimp, linguica, chicken, piquillo peppers, green peas, kosher aioli & Parmesan. My friend and I came in for Taste in Tempe, where they do a prix-fixe menu and had a delicious dinner! We shared the pibil dumplings and the cheddar & kimchi croquettes for the appetizer. Both were really good but had a bit of a kick. For my entree I got the steak and it was cooked perfectly and the chimichurri sauce was so good. Lastly, I got the miso cheesecake for dessert and the flavors were incredible! I love the animal and jungle themed decor in this upscale restaurant. We were seated right next to the big stuffed leopard which was fun. Our waitress was super personable but there were a few service mistakes. My entree was missing the potatoes it was supposed to come with. And when they boxed my meal, they didn't include everything like the salad and chimichurri sauce. Luckily I checked and was able to get everything added, but staff shouldn't be neglecting or throwing away part of my meal. Really enjoyed Filthy Animal though in truth this should be a 4.5 star rating. It was very good but with a few issues. Our visit started out poorly because we spent 30 minutes driving around looking for a place to park. The front desk sent us to a valet that didn't exist and we almost left. My husband persisted and we finally found a spot. But it took way too long driving around in circles. After that drama, We had a pretty fast dinner but I really enjoyed it. First drinks. My husband got a cocktail. I wanted to order a mocktail but they didn't have a mocktail menu or any non alcoholic drinks anywhere. The waiter tried to describe them but that didn't work. Please get a menu. Ended up with lemonade bc I didn't know what to order. We ordered the tuna ceviche appetizer with plantain chips. I don't normally order things with chips but It was delicious! Great spicy kick and definitely the best thing I ate. Loved it. For dinner I ordered the lamb. I also really enjoyed this so much. The lamb was delicious (a bit unseasoned though). Also the garbanzo dish that came with it was unbelievably great! I was actually amazed that a side could be so good and I just wanted more of it. My husband ordered the seabass. Unfortunately it was underseasoned and way overcooked. The side wasn't great either. He ended up eating one of my lamb pieces. I love going to Drop Dead Gorgeous so I automatically thought the feelings would be the same for Filthy Animal, I was wrong. Of course the aesthetic and ambiance is amazing love it! The service was Grade A as well. Our server was attentive and such a wonderful person. Lastly, The fooood! I ordered the lobster plate and first they did not break the lobster shell open, they didnt have anymore "lobster crackers" available so I had to send my lobster back twice to get the shell cracked by the cook. Then the macaroni chicken concoction on top of the lobster was two thumbs down (definitely not my favorite) I would never order that dish again. I started with cast iron Brie which was delicious and plenty of food. For entree I got the lamb chops. The wood fire gives the a great unique taste. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive the entire time we were there, which was a couple hours. The milk bread is an absolute must! It's so pillowy soft and the flaky sea salt perfectly compliments it. I ordered the Wise Decision cocktail, which was refreshing. For my entree, I had the shishito Caesar salad and was advised I could add a protein from their skewer selection of chicken, pork belly or oyster mushrooms. I asked the waitress about the chicken and she advised that they are smoked and will appear pink from that, so not to be alarmed, but are moist and really flavorful. While the filet was tempting (and what everyone else at my table ordered), I wanted something lighter. Thankfully I was not disappointed in my selection. The chicken was as delicious as described and could be cut with a fork. The Caesar salad was well dressed, but not soggy. Do I think it was worth the money to add the chicken? The pancakes were a lovely cake like consistency, thick fluffy and oh so slightly sweet. My chai pancake was a surprisingly good combo with bacon pieces sprinkled on top and pistachios. My friend ordered the strawberry pancake and the fresh strawberry syrup was a great addition. We ordered the sirloin steak fillet and it was cooked to our taste. The eggs were perfectly medium scrambled. The scalloted potatoes were nothing special a but underwhelming in comparison. Although I was ecstatic to see they had heirloom peanut tomatoe salad. The heirloom were largely diced and did not seem very fresh, the peanut sauce was very light as well. A bit surprised as our waitress recommended it. Our happy hour dishes were the oysters, beef tartar and tuna ceviche. Of all 3 the plantain chips were the highlight they were house made and light and crispy. Stopped in on a busy Mother's Day afternoon after a long walk to get some drinks. Place was absolutely crowded but room at the bar. Inside is truly unique blend of African safari, Aussie chefs complete with hats wood grilling tomahawks and tons of meat right in the middle of the restaurant. Decor is again rather unique with a mix of wood, soft furnishings, drapes, brass and stuffed exotic animals (which im sure are clever fakes) Josh at the bar was awesome, not just for me but extremely attentive and quick at delivery. Remembered drink preferences, even an unusual order i made which he delivered perfectly after serving 2 others who joined me. The spicy peanut and tomato salad was very refreshing, however I wished it was a little bigger in size. The dressing was a peanut dressing, similar to a thai peanut dressing salad. The tuna pineapple ceviche had pineapple with tuna served with plantain chips. It was hot in Arizona and this dish kept it very refreshing to eat. For entrees, my family and I ordered the lemongrass half chicken, campfire seabass, ancho chili glazed pork chop, and the bone in ribeye. The lemon grass chicken was served with carrots and garlic mashed potatoes with jalapeno jam. The chicken was so juicy and you can taste the lemon grass marinated in the chicken. Again, jalapeno jam? What a genius! The campfire seabass was in this chorizo broth along with couscous and vegetables. My bestie and I went here for brunch. We ordered some dishes to share: -Pibil Dumplings: The beef short rib tasted more like sausage, and the combination of red pepper flakes with pineapple tasted like pizza. Our server highly recommended this and we thought it was decent. -Cast Iron Brie: Melted brie with grapes, strawberries, and pecans. It wasn't anything special. -Shishito Caesar: Basically a caesar salad with *some* shishito peppers. I was expecting more shishito. It was mid. -Flat iron steak & eggs: This wasn't anything special. The steak was chewy although it had a strong smokey flavor, almost like bbq. We went there during my graduation from ASU. It's right down the street from the campus, so it was the perfect place to celebrate. All around, from the staff to the dining, was a perfect experience. The food is entirely cooked on an open charcoal fire pit that you can see in the open kitchen. GREAT experience, very fun atmosphere, and the staff were amazing. I can't speak highly enough about all the food we got. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly, albeit that I prefer food that is a bit on the salty side, so if you're sensitive to that you might want to ask them to dial it back a bit. The one thing I have to mention without hesitation are the roasted oysters. They .... were .... divine. We'll be going back on every visit. Sadly it wasn't GF so I had to live vicariously through their blissful bites -- but honestly, watching that cheese pull was its own experience. For mains, my husband chose the Lemongrass Half Chicken. Plot twist: when it arrived, the low lighting disguised the fact that it was quite undercooked (only reason for the 4 stars). Once we realized, the staff handled it like total pros -- kind, apologetic, and beyond accommodating. They offered to remake it or switch it out entirely. He pivoted to the Ancho Chili Glazed Pork Chop and OH. MY. WORD. If there was ever a silver lining to a chicken mishap, this was it. That pork chop was DIVINE -- juicy, flavorful, absolute perfection. I went with the Bomba Rice and it was STELLAR. Every bite was bold and satisfying. My flank steak was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed my arugula salad, but I do wish my french fries were not cold. I tried some of the chicken and pork belly skewers. They were also very tasty and so was the rice that accompanied them. The rice had a unique flavor. I believe I tasted a slight fennel flavor mixed in with the other delicious spices. Since it was my birthday, they brought out a piece of their birthday ice cream cake. I loved the cake on top with the ice cream on the bottom. My favorite part was probably scooping the ice cream up with the broken waffle cone that the cake was topped with. It really was a delicious birthday dessert. Whew my first dining experience in Arizona did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I came out for Valentine's Day and since it was my first time ever in Arizona, I was really excited to try the food. Safe to say it lived up to the hype. I ordered the Wise Decision to start and it was so good, super refreshing and easy to drink. We got the milk bread, tuna pineapple ceviche, and the Pibil dumplings and honestly everything hit. The milk bread was warm and soft with that perfect buttery pull. The ceviche was fresh and bright with sweet pineapple that made the tuna pop. The dumplings were flavorful and savory with just the right amount of spice. I also had to try the melted cast iron brie and wow. It came out hot and creamy with fruit and pecans and every bite was sweet, salty, and rich in the best way. My boyfriend ordered the white oak grilled chicken skewers and those were easily a ten out of ten. Juicy, smoky, and full of flavor. We didn't stay for mains because we had other reservations, but after that lineup we already know we're coming back for the full experience. Girl Dinner on a Thursday. Sure, why not?!? My sister secured a Thursday Night OUTDOOR PATIO reservation at this always packed establishment on Mill Ave. The restaurant was lively, full of energy from the open air kitchen, and beautifully decorated! We had the a number of statements were AMAZING! Get the Melted Brie...... it's so good you can slather it on a boot. The chicken was also super moist, tender, and marinated to perfection. The Jungle Thyme cocktail was the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and refreshing. Our server Kelly was top notch and very accommodating. She made sure we didn't want for anything, provided a friendly atmosphere, and took care of us by finding an inside table once it started randomly raining on the patio. Great food? CHECK. Great service? CHECK. Great ambiance? CHECK. In mid-December, we headed to Tempe for a long weekend for my stepdaughter's graduation from ASU. It was a weekend of much celebration, and one of the highlights was our visit to Filthy Animal. The whole vibe is great. Very "jungle," but not at all cheesy. We sat outside (we East Coasters were delighted with a break from winter's grip and enjoyed the balmy AZ temps). Lots of warm firelight out there, and a lush, tropical garden feel. Service was ACE. Our server was friendly and funny and helpful. She took extra care of our diner who has a tree nut allergy and made sure our every need (and then some) was met. But the food. OMG THE FOOD. We started with the Pibil Dumplings and Fire-Roasted Bone Marrow. Both were amazing but those dumplings... WOW. We ordered a second plate because we gobbled them up so quickly. Around the table, we had the whole spicy lobster (our grad got this specifically because of the Korean mac and cheese, which clearly did not disappoint, but was blown away by the whole thing); I got the campfire branzino which was light, moist, flaky, and beautifully flavorful. Another got the lemongrass roasted chicken and was raving about it the whole time; husband--who never orders steak out because he maintains he makes it better than anyone else--got the bone-in ribeye (and the shishito Caesar salad) and his eyes practically rolled back into his head. He was floored by how good it was. The drinkers at the table were all more than satisfied with their cocktails (they had both Monkey 47 gin *and* green Chartreuse behind the bar, so what I'm told was a great "Last Word" was possible) and if you're sober, like me, the bartenders have an array of non-alcoholic options based on the flavor profile you like (e.g., spicy, garden, etc.) Terrific, and I wish more places were this thoughtful. In all, it was just a great experience. If we find ourselves in Phoenix again, we will definitely be back! read more

I wanted to love this place. It had been on my list and we got a babysitter and everything. The decor is beautiful - but our experience was upsetting. We made a reservation weeks ahead for both the speakeasy as well as filthy animal. Upon checking in at filthy animal I reminded them of both of these reservations, and they took us back to the speakeasy. My sister did the same upon showing up 10 mins later. Then, 5 mins prior to our reservation we went up and reminded filthy animal that we were in the speakeasy and ready to be seated whenever the table was ready - they said they would come get us when it was ready. We waited, waited, waited.. finally it was FORTY FIVE MINUTES past our reservation time and we were getting frustrated so i walked up and said hey is the table ready it should have been 45 mins ago. The host asked the party name and acted like she had no idea we had been waiting for them to get us...... absolutely ridiculous to have no proper communication between your staff on shift or between your speakeasy in the back. By the time we sat town clearly we were already in a bad mood - tired, super hungry. The food was good but nothing memorable and our waitress was hard to find and they didn't do anything for our friends birthday, noted on the reservation. We ended up having to ask our sitter to stay later and pay her longer due to this mishap on the restaurant and overall killed the vibe. Wouldn't come back for dinner to this spot unfortunately again. read more

This was on top of my list to try. I was so excited to come and have dinner here last night. I'm so glad I did, so glad I started the new year with this restaurant. The layout, the restaurant the patio so cool! So nice. It was amazing. We definitely want to come back. Our server was Kelly. She was amazing, shout out to Kelly. We got some appetizers, but I forgot to take pictures lol because we were so hungry. We got the pork belly skewers and the short rib dumplings. Freaking fantastic!! All our entrées were delicious and perfect. Cocktails were very pretty and elegant and had some great wine as well. For dessert, we got the cheesecake and the birthday ice cream cake, OMG... So yummy. I highly recommend you make the time to come down and go have dinner there. read more

My apologies for the already eaten small plates. They were too delicious to devour before the picture. We ordered and ate the grilled oysters, not pictured, and they were good. I've never had grilled and they were not bad, I just prefer raw oysters. We went here for my sisters birthday last month and this restaurant did NOT disappoint. As soon as you walked in, the restaurant felt luxurious. We were all dressed for the occasion but I do not believe there is a dress code. The service was quick and our server was friendly with great recommendations. My favorite dish, which I ordered, was the Bomba Rice. It was rich and delicious! The whipped potatoes paired well with the bone-in short rib. My sister really enjoyed the lobster, she just wished they had to tools to crack it. We tried to see the speakeasy but unfortunately there was a private party and we couldn't go into it. We will be back to see the speakeasy! I truly recommend eating here! read more

Interesting concept and very cool decor! The miso cheesecake was dense and delicious, and the pibil beef dumplings were a winner as well! Our server was excellent and the view we had of the fire pit was pretty neat! My one tiny comment is that the cabbage could have used some more time to cook. The base was cold and pretty hard still. Filthy Animal truly impressed me the ambience deserves its own moment, gorgeous, moody, classy, and undeniably hot. The Summertime Friends cocktail was a standou , bright and layered with blanco tequila, poblano heat, grapefruit , pamplemousse, sumac, vanilla anise, and lime. For food, the lemongrass half chicken was packed with flavor, the chicken skewers were perfectly juicy, and the milk bread with miso tomato butter & kalamata was dangerously addictive. A spot that nails both drinks and dishes. A disclaimer for all vegan people not much options from them, the edamame hummus listed on the menu wasn't available, so we settled for the vegan ceviche, which was just okayish. read more

Service is top notch, food is solid and inventive at times, and the place is a great vibe. Drinks are costly and not as strong as the price would lead one to believe, but the ones we tried were tasty. Dessert knocked our socks off, the Miso cheesecake was spectacular. Outdoor seating along Mill ave is wonderful. The restaurant gets busy so it feels a little crowded when it does, but the decor is classy, and while it can get noisy it's still very comfortable. Filthy Animal is a play on words as it grabs your attention and makes you remember it. Please don't let the name confuse you, it is NOT organ meat. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. I feel the need to wear a safari pith helmet and khaki. The upscale lighting and artwork is stunning. We went with our friends who are mostly vegan and very adventurous. The menu can be meat heavy but the small plates are intriguing and have well thought out flavor combos. The evening was nice and our reservations early so we elected to dine outside. Our only issue was the misters were going so strong that water droplets can down like rain. Once notified, the restaurant shut them off. We had real intrigue with the small plate flavor combinations, unusual ingredients groupings and waitress suggestions. The milk bread with miso tomato butter, almond and kalamata was the first to arrive. The rolls were slightly sweet, pillowy and unbelievable when accompanied with the savory butter. I easily could of polished off two plates on my own. The heirloom tomato and spicy peanut dressing with onions, daikon radish, baby gem, whipped queso de cabra, mala chili and sour nut was a show stopper. It was not over-powering but kept you coming back for one more bite. A definite must try. The Taridito with yellow tail, grilled peaches, avacado crema, habanero passion fruit aguachile, and crispy quinoa was good but our least favorite. The tuna cerviche with grilled pineapple, leche de tigre, crispy quinoa and lightly salted long plantain chips were over the moon good. The sweet, salty and savory flavors were perfectly blended and memorable. Our final selection was the bomba rice risotto with shrimp, linguica, green peas, piquillo peppers, kosho aioli and parmesan was smooth, amazing flavor and warm to the soul. A truly incredible dish. It is difficult to express just how pleasantly surprised and absolutely tasty our dining was tonight. The name completely threw us off. A heart felt thank you to our female server and her suggestions. Filthy Animal is a new favorite dining space in the hip ASU center of town. All of us will definitely be returning to discover the rest of the menu. If you have the opportunity, make reservations and book a seat to a truly enjoyable evening of dining at Filthy Animal.
