Probably not my favorite new spot, but not a bad place to try if you're looking for "vibes" and a good steak. Starting with the positive: our waitress was great, friendly, and ready to go with recommendations. The steak was the standout - wow. If you order one thing, you NEED to try the steak. Their wood fired grill cooks it perfectly. The sea bass was also delicious, with crispy skin and yummy couscous. The sweet potatoes as a side were great as well. Would skip the regular potatoes and the dumplings. The potatoes just weren't cooked and the sauce wasn't good so it couldn't make up for anything. The dumplings were fine, but so expensive for the few you get. The bad: not sure if this is a regular occurrence, but there was a large table of "influencers" taking flash photos and videos constantly. There were a few other tables besides this standout that were doing similar things. I support influencers getting content (I myself take photos for my yelp reviews), however this was incessant and completely ruined our date night vibe. It was disruptive and we were surprised the staff let this happen in such a nice restaurant. Overall, probably good for college students and a younger crowd not worried about a space overrun with influencers. This was the only steakhouse I visited in Phoenix, so I might be a little biased, but I can confidently say this was my favorite meal of the entire weekend! From the moment we arrived, the restaurant had such great vibes. There was also a subtle, almost secretive animal theme throughout the space that added a really cool touch. The hostess and waitstaff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and accommodating. The drinks were good, but the food was definitely the star. The milk bread was absolutely delicious, and the pibil dumplings were also really good. My only complaint is that they only came with three pieces, which felt a little expensive for the portion. The beef tartare was another standout. It was delicious on its own and paired really well with the banana chip, which added a nice contrast in texture and flavor. I would probably skip the white oak grilled skewers, though. They were pretty burnt, and unfortunately, they didn't really stand out to me compared to the other dishes. The ribeye was cooked to absolute perfection. We asked if they could prepare the two halves of the ribeye at different temperatures since my wife prefers her steak closer to medium, and they were more than happy to accommodate us. They even comped our milk bread because it took a little longer than expected to come out, which was a really nice gesture. Overall, an excellent experience from start to finish. Great atmosphere, fantastic service, and some really memorable dishes. Definitely recommend checking this steakhouse out if you're in the Phoenix area! read more

The Milk bread is light, fluffy, & a great starter to share. The Pibil Dumplings with the grilled pineapple was a sweet flavor touch. I enjoyed their unique spin on an espresso martini, it had some kind of pineapple flavor in it. We shared the brie with bread and the bread came out pretty charred. Both were really good but had a bit of a kick. For my entree I got the steak and it was cooked perfectly and the chimichurri sauce was so good. Lastly, I got the miso cheesecake for dessert and the flavors were incredible! I love the animal and jungle themed decor in this upscale restaurant. We were seated right next to the big stuffed leopard which was fun. Our waitress was super personable but there were a few service mistakes. My entree was missing the potatoes it was supposed to come with. And when they boxed my meal, they didn't include everything like the salad and chimichurri sauce. Luckily I checked and was able to get everything added, but staff shouldn't be neglecting or throwing away part of my meal. Loved this place! First, we had to change our reservation, and the host could not have been nicer. On a busy Saturday night, he graciously allowed us to push it back by an hour, which we really appreciated. When we arrived, we were immediately impressed. The jungle theme, leopard prints, intimate booths, and dramatic overhead lighting created a fun, unique atmosphere. The service was excellent, the cocktails were delicious, and every dish we ordered was a hit. My son said it may have been the best steak tartare he's ever had (although neither of us was a fan of the plantain chips). It was certainly the best tartare I've had in a very long time, with generous chunks of high-quality steak instead of being overly minced. The baked brie dip was outstanding, the grilled oysters were excellent, and my New York strip was cooked perfectly. My only small criticism is that the oyster appetizer came with just three oysters. For a $19 appetizer, I'd love to see at least four. An even number also makes sharing much easier, although my son generously let me have the extra one! Really enjoyed Filthy Animal though in truth this should be a 4.5 star rating. It was very good but with a few issues. Our visit started out poorly because we spent 30 minutes driving around looking for a place to park. The front desk sent us to a valet that didn't exist and we almost left. My husband persisted and we finally found a spot. But it took way too long driving around in circles. After that drama, We had a pretty fast dinner but I really enjoyed it. First drinks. My husband got a cocktail. I wanted to order a mocktail but they didn't have a mocktail menu or any non alcoholic drinks anywhere. The waiter tried to describe them but that didn't work. Please get a menu. Ended up with lemonade bc I didn't know what to order. We ordered the tuna ceviche appetizer with plantain chips. I don't normally order things with chips but It was delicious! Great spicy kick and definitely the best thing I ate. Loved it. For dinner I ordered the lamb. I also really enjoyed this so much. The lamb was delicious (a bit unseasoned though). Also the garbanzo dish that came with it was unbelievably great! I was actually amazed that a side could be so good and I just wanted more of it. My husband ordered the seabass. Unfortunately it was underseasoned and way overcooked. The side wasn't great either. He ended up eating one of my lamb pieces. Our final verdict after dining at Filthy Animal steakhouse in Tempe, Arizona, on a Sunday night after seeing The Odyssey at Harkins nearby: High Aura. We called about half hour before and made a reservation by phone. I was disappointed that my first order choice of the Seabass was unavailable and my second choice of lamb chops was also unavailable. Not sure if this is because it was a Sunday night and/or we made the reservation immediately before showing up. They were also out of the Melted Cast-Iron Brie Small Plate that we were excited about ordering for the table. We loved this restaurant because of the dark and jungle-themed interior. We were excited to see the bold taxidermy featuring the large cats combined with the ornate, gold- framed dapper animal art hanging on the walls. Another reason to love this spot: hidden inside is an entrance to a secret cocktail lounge, or speakeasy, called "Drop Dead Gorgeous." We also appreciated the entire restaurant centering around a glowing, raw wood-fire cooking pit. We could hear and watch our entrées being prepared. What we didn't love so much: the items that we would've liked to have ordered were unavailable. The price to portion ratio in the small bites could also be improved a bit. Great service from our waitress throughout the evening. We ordered: - Fire Roasted Bone Marrow for the table (3/5) - sourdough toast, jalapeño marmalade with demi. I was so excited to try bone marrow for the first time. It was interesting. Sort of like a mix between butter and fat from a steak. It tasted really good with the spicy jalapeño jelly and bread provided. I expected us to be warm and it came out cold. Still not sure if I like it or not. Maybe I'll give it a second try - White Oak Grilled Chicken Skewers (4/5) - served with shiso leaves, kimchi, shishito peppers. kosho aioli, lemon aioli, ssamjung for the table - Very yummy. We enjoyed these. We had actually changed our mind right after initially putting in the milk bread order for the table and they brought out the milk bread so quickly that our waitress said she would give this to us on the house. - Milk Bread for the table (4/5) - miso tomato butter, almond & Kalamata. Even though we changed our mind and got this sent to our table accidentally, I would order this again. It was very delicious and it comes out as an adorable little tomato shaped and colored milk bread with the toppings looking like the stem on top. So tasty and everybody loved it. A little small for our party of five. - Lemongrass Half Chicken (5/5) - Caramelized carrots, kyoto roasted garlic, mashed potatoes & jalapeno jam. Hubs loved this. He said everything was delicious and went well together. - Bomba Rice x2 (5/5) - Risotto, shrimp, linguica, chicken, piquillo peppers, green peas, kosher aioli & Parmesan. My son and his girlfriend both ordered this and said it was very good. - Shishito Caesar Salad add Chicken Skewers (5/5) - bonito, charred shishito peppers, ricotta salata, tapioca chicharron & togarashi. YUMMMM What a creative and unique salad! So glad I tried it. It has unique flavors that work well with each other and a crunch. There's also some heat that goes along with the salad. I was able to withstand it. My son would probably say it's not spicy at all. This is such a swanky gem in the middle of a college row filled with sports bars and fast casual restaurants. My colleagues selected this spot for dinner while in town for a conference. We were setup in a separate dining area from the main dining room, which allowed for better conversation without added noise. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive the entire time we were there, which was a couple hours. The milk bread is an absolute must! It's so pillowy soft and the flaky sea salt perfectly compliments it. I ordered the Wise Decision cocktail, which was refreshing. For my entree, I had the shishito Caesar salad and was advised I could add a protein from their skewer selection of chicken, pork belly or oyster mushrooms. I asked the waitress about the chicken and she advised that they are smoked and will appear pink from that, so not to be alarmed, but are moist and really flavorful. While the filet was tempting (and what everyone else at my table ordered), I wanted something lighter. Thankfully I was not disappointed in my selection. The chicken was as delicious as described and could be cut with a fork. The Caesar salad was well dressed, but not soggy. Do I think it was worth the money to add the chicken? Stopped in on a busy Mother's Day afternoon after a long walk to get some drinks. Place was absolutely crowded but room at the bar. Inside is truly unique blend of African safari, Aussie chefs complete with hats wood grilling tomahawks and tons of meat right in the middle of the restaurant. Decor is again rather unique with a mix of wood, soft furnishings, drapes, brass and stuffed exotic animals (which im sure are clever fakes) Josh at the bar was awesome, not just for me but extremely attentive and quick at delivery. Remembered drink preferences, even an unusual order i made which he delivered perfectly after serving 2 others who joined me. Everyone behind the bar kept my water topped up and the bar free of soiled napkins and empty glasses. Prices were extremely reasonable. Few drafts on tap and am extensive bar and cocktail selection. My bestie and I went here for brunch. We ordered some dishes to share: -Pibil Dumplings: The beef short rib tasted more like sausage, and the combination of red pepper flakes with pineapple tasted like pizza. Our server highly recommended this and we thought it was decent. -Cast Iron Brie: Melted brie with grapes, strawberries, and pecans. It wasn't anything special. -Shishito Caesar: Basically a caesar salad with *some* shishito peppers. I was expecting more shishito. It was mid. -Flat iron steak & eggs: This wasn't anything special. The steak was chewy although it had a strong smokey flavor, almost like bbq. I wasn't a fan of the flavor of the scalloped potatoes. -Beverages: I ordered the espresso martini which was not bad, and my bestie ordered the house blend red wine which was pretty light. My friend and I were looking for unique restaurants in the tempe area and after seeing the photos for this location I had to try it! The speakeasy, cheetah subtle safari environment was chic! We were celebrating our half birthdays (two half birthdays make a whole, amirite?) And came just at the perfect time to take advantage of the brunch menu and their happy hour! The pancakes were a lovely cake like consistency, thick fluffy and oh so slightly sweet. My chai pancake was a surprisingly good combo with bacon pieces sprinkled on top and pistachios. My friend ordered the strawberry pancake and the fresh strawberry syrup was a great addition. We ordered the sirloin steak fillet and it was cooked to our taste. The eggs were perfectly medium scrambled. The scalloted potatoes were nothing special a but underwhelming in comparison. Although I was ecstatic to see they had heirloom peanut tomatoe salad. The heirloom were largely diced and did not seem very fresh, the peanut sauce was very light as well. A bit surprised as our waitress recommended it. Our happy hour dishes were the oysters, beef tartar and tuna ceviche. Of all 3 the plantain chips were the highlight they were house made and light and crispy. The oysters although had a great presentation we had to send back because it was way too salty. Absolutely love the tuna ceviche it was a great spicy bite to it and the colors were so beautiful. Came here with my family after my graduation from ASU! Such a cute place to definitely check out. I like how dark it is inside, it feels very intimate. My family and I ordered family style so we can try everything. For starters, we ordered the milk bread, fire roasted bone marrow, spicy peanut and tomato salad, and the tuna pineapple ceviche. I might say this multiple times in my review, but the food was very delicious and the description of the food was very interesting however it all blended so good in my mouth. The milk bread was topped with a miso tomato butter with almond and kalamata. Sounds interesting right? But when you actually tasted it, it was delicious! Who knew to bring such ingredients together to make this?! The softness of the bread and the saltiness from the butter complimented it so well! The fire roasted bone marrow was served with sourdough toast with a jalapeno marmalade with demi sauce. I never had bone marrow, however I met people who either liked it or choose not to try it, but this time I decided to try it. Who knew how soft and buttery bone marrow was?! The spicy peanut and tomato salad was very refreshing, however I wished it was a little bigger in size. The dressing was a peanut dressing, similar to a thai peanut dressing salad. The tuna pineapple ceviche had pineapple with tuna served with plantain chips. It was hot in Arizona and this dish kept it very refreshing to eat. For entrees, my family and I ordered the lemongrass half chicken, campfire seabass, ancho chili glazed pork chop, and the bone in ribeye. The lemon grass chicken was served with carrots and garlic mashed potatoes with jalapeno jam. The chicken was so juicy and you can taste the lemon grass marinated in the chicken. Again, jalapeno jam? What a genius! The campfire seabass was in this chorizo broth along with couscous and vegetables. I honestly can not review much regarding the campfire seabass because I didn't taste, but per my grandma she said it was really good haha! The ancho chili glazed pork chop was surprisingly not dry! I don't really eat pork chops, but our server recommended it and she did not disappoint! The bone in ribeye was delicious!! Super juicy and flavorful! I love the ambience and the vibe and the decor. It's super chic and cool. The staff is super nice and friendly! The menu is super simple, but has a lot of great options! Both my girlfriend and I got hit by the peacock door knob. I think the placement is a bit too high and the door itself is heavy, so it swings back pretty hard. The pop of pomegranate with the sweetness of plantain? Absolute texture magic. Meanwhile, the cast-iron melted brie at our table had everyone swooning. Sadly it wasn't GF so I had to live vicariously through their blissful bites -- but honestly, watching that cheese pull was its own experience. For mains, my husband chose the Lemongrass Half Chicken. Plot twist: when it arrived, the low lighting disguised the fact that it was quite undercooked (only reason for the 4 stars). Once we realized, the staff handled it like total pros -- kind, apologetic, and beyond accommodating. They offered to remake it or switch it out entirely. He pivoted to the Ancho Chili Glazed Pork Chop and OH. MY. WORD. If there was ever a silver lining to a chicken mishap, this was it. The menu had some unique options. We tried several things and all the food was really delicious and came out quickly. My only complaint is that the waitress boxed our food up for us and she didn't box up any of the cheese that came with the potatoes which was really disappointing since it was so delicious and there was a decent amount left. Whew my first dining experience in Arizona did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I came out for Valentine's Day and since it was my first time ever in Arizona, I was really excited to try the food. Safe to say it lived up to the hype. I ordered the Wise Decision to start and it was so good, super refreshing and easy to drink. We got the milk bread, tuna pineapple ceviche, and the Pibil dumplings and honestly everything hit. The milk bread was warm and soft with that perfect buttery pull. The ceviche was fresh and bright with sweet pineapple that made the tuna pop. The dumplings were flavorful and savory with just the right amount of spice. I also had to try the melted cast iron brie and wow. It came out hot and creamy with fruit and pecans and every bite was sweet, salty, and rich in the best way. My boyfriend ordered the white oak grilled chicken skewers and those were easily a ten out of ten. Juicy, smoky, and full of flavor. We didn't stay for mains because we had other reservations, but after that lineup we already know we're coming back for the full experience. Our waitress Amber was super sweet and attentive which made it even better. Coming from Miami, I have high expectations when it comes to food, and this definitely delivered. I walked in fully expecting this place to be overhyped, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite spots in Tempe. The vibe is great. I loved the open kitchen and watching the chefs on the grill. Our server was awesome and gave solid recommendations. We started with the milk bread, pibil dumplings, and tuna pineapple ceviche. The bread was fine but forgettable. The dumplings were the clear winner. Great short rib filling with an incredible sauce. I would order multiple plates next time. The ceviche was solid overall, even though the smoked pineapple did not stand out much. For mains, we tried the short rib, wood-fire steak, and lemongrass half chicken. The short rib was basic and not something I would order again. The steak was cooked perfectly with a nice smoky flavor and paired well with the chimichurri. The lemongrass chicken surprised me the most. Smoky, slightly sweet, and tangy, and different from anything I have had locally. Overall, this place exceeded my expectations. Vibey spot in Tempe near ASU -- a great choice for dinner or nicer events. The darker lighting gives it a moody feel, and I loved the animal-themed decor. Service was great and the food was good, though it is on the pricier side. read more

I love going to Drop Dead Gorgeous so I automatically thought the feelings would be the same for Filthy Animal, I was wrong. Of course the aesthetic and ambiance is amazing love it! The service was Grade A as well. Our server was attentive and such a wonderful person. Lastly, The fooood! I ordered the lobster plate and first they did not break the lobster shell open, they didnt have anymore "lobster crackers" available so I had to send my lobster back twice to get the shell cracked by the cook. Then the macaroni chicken concoction on top of the lobster was two thumbs down (definitely not my favorite) I would never order that dish again. My friend loved her food so I maybe just need to try something else on my next visit but that lobster dish needs something rethinking read more

We loved everything. The Aloha From Hawaii, Pibil Dumplings, Tiradito, Campfire Seabass, White Oak Grilled Chicken Skewers, and the Ice Cream Cake were all delicious! Inside is gorgeous, very glamorous, ornate, and detailed oriented. I made a reservation the week of for date night and highly recommend doing that since it gets busy. Girl Dinner on a Thursday. Sure, why not?!? My sister secured a Thursday Night OUTDOOR PATIO reservation at this always packed establishment on Mill Ave. The restaurant was lively, full of energy from the open air kitchen, and beautifully decorated! We had the a number of statements were AMAZING! Get the Melted Brie...... it's so good you can slather it on a boot. The chicken was also super moist, tender, and marinated to perfection. The Jungle Thyme cocktail was the perfect balance of sweet, tart, and refreshing. Our server Kelly was top notch and very accommodating. She made sure we didn't want for anything, provided a friendly atmosphere, and took care of us by finding an inside table once it started randomly raining on the patio. Great food? CHECK. Great service? CHECK. Great ambiance? CHECK. In mid-December, we headed to Tempe for a long weekend for my stepdaughter's graduation from ASU. It was a weekend of much celebration, and one of the highlights was our visit to Filthy Animal. The whole vibe is great. Very "jungle," but not at all cheesy. We sat outside (we East Coasters were delighted with a break from winter's grip and enjoyed the balmy AZ temps). Lots of warm firelight out there, and a lush, tropical garden feel. Service was ACE. Our server was friendly and funny and helpful. She took extra care of our diner who has a tree nut allergy and made sure our every need (and then some) was met. But the food. OMG THE FOOD. We started with the Pibil Dumplings and Fire-Roasted Bone Marrow. Both were amazing but those dumplings... WOW. We ordered a second plate because we gobbled them up so quickly. Around the table, we had the whole spicy lobster (our grad got this specifically because of the Korean mac and cheese, which clearly did not disappoint, but was blown away by the whole thing); I got the campfire branzino which was light, moist, flaky, and beautifully flavorful. Another got the lemongrass roasted chicken and was raving about it the whole time; husband--who never orders steak out because he maintains he makes it better than anyone else--got the bone-in ribeye (and the shishito Caesar salad) and his eyes practically rolled back into his head. He was floored by how good it was. The drinkers at the table were all more than satisfied with their cocktails (they had both Monkey 47 gin *and* green Chartreuse behind the bar, so what I'm told was a great "Last Word" was possible) and if you're sober, like me, the bartenders have an array of non-alcoholic options based on the flavor profile you like (e.g., spicy, garden, etc.) Terrific, and I wish more places were this thoughtful.
