Flat Iron steak & eggs
Kathy M.

Filthy Animal is an upscale restaurant located in Tempe. Every single angle of this restaurant is aesthetic. I like the open kitchen and all the animal/plant decor. My bestie and I went here for brunch. We ordered some dishes to share: -Pibil Dumplings: The beef short rib tasted more like sausage, and the combination of red pepper flakes with pineapple tasted like pizza. Our server highly recommended this and we thought it was decent. -Cast Iron Brie: Melted brie with grapes, strawberries, and pecans. It wasn't anything special. -Shishito Caesar: Basically a caesar salad with *some* shishito peppers. I was expecting more shishito. It was mid. -Flat iron steak & eggs: This wasn't anything special. The steak was chewy although it had a strong smokey flavor, almost like bbq. I wasn't a fan of the flavor of the scalloped potatoes. -Beverages: I ordered the espresso martini which was not bad, and my bestie ordered the house blend red wine which was pretty light. Service was good. However, there was a TON of fruit flies that wouldn't stop bugging us. They landed all over our food - it's as if there was an infestation. The food wasn't good enough to return, especially for brunch. It's a cute spot but I don't think it's worth the price.

We literally drove by this place and I saw the name of the restaurant and I said we have to go there.! We came here for brunch on a Sunday and it was amazing! I love the ambience and the vibe and the decor. It's super chic and cool. The staff is super nice and friendly! The menu is super simple, but has a lot of great options! I got the simple breakfast and because I'm gluten-free they just doubled up my bacon instead of the toast. Every bite was amazing. My husband got the iron flat steak with eggs and he also loved his meal. I got a mocktail and it was so beautiful and it taste so refreshing. I definitely would come back to this place again when I'm back in town. I highly recommend.!

The ambiance here is gorgeous with the exotic animal decor and dimmed lights. Our meal was cooked to perfection and the ribeye melted in your mouth. Cocktails we had wise decisions, old fashion, and a pornstar martini which were all very well mixed! The speakeasy is located inside the restaurant which has an 80s feel to it. Service was great and our waitress checked up on us frequently. I highly recommend this spot if you're in the area!

Came to celebrate my birthday and I loved it! Got the tropical mocktail and it was not that great. We got the Brie for appetizer and it was good. For the meal I got the filet and omg! So good! It had a little kick to it but I love the wood fire taste to it. Also I love the open kitchen concept! The ambiance is a vibe! Also was able to get a complementary burger cake. It was good. It was ice cream. The server was nice.

Stopped in here after a business meeting in Tempe. Super cool ambiance & open wood fire kitchen. The service was solid, manager was very attentive. The food was really good, I thought the sandwich bread was a little dry, but overall super good. Def want to come back for a dinner

I liked the moody, dark vibe. It was cool seeing the grilling pit with all the meat cuts hanging above. I had two margaritas and they were perfect -- not too sweet. I also had the edamame, but it neede more salt to really bring out the savory flavor. Overall, the service was attentive and helpful. One design flaw: the bathroom door handle. Both my girlfriend and I got hit by the peacock door knob. I think the placement is a bit too high and the door itself is heavy, so it swings back pretty hard. I'd come back, my kinda place.

Service is top notch, food is solid and inventive at times, and the place is a great vibe. Drinks are costly and not as strong as the price would lead one to believe, but the ones we tried were tasty. Dessert knocked our socks off, the Miso cheesecake was spectacular. Our server was absolutely wonderful and overall a great night with solid food and ambiance.

Whew my first dining experience in Arizona did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I came out for Valentine's Day and since it was my first time ever in Arizona, I was really excited to try the food. Safe to say it lived up to the hype. I ordered the Wise Decision to start and it was so good, super refreshing and easy to drink. We got the milk bread, tuna pineapple ceviche, and the Pibil dumplings and honestly everything hit. The milk bread was warm and soft with that perfect buttery pull. The ceviche was fresh and bright with sweet pineapple that made the tuna pop. The dumplings were flavorful and savory with just the right amount of spice. I also had to try the melted cast iron brie and wow. It came out hot and creamy with fruit and pecans and every bite was sweet, salty, and rich in the best way. My boyfriend ordered the white oak grilled chicken skewers and those were easily a ten out of ten. Juicy, smoky, and full of flavor. We didn't stay for mains because we had other reservations, but after that lineup we already know we're coming back for the full experience. Our waitress Amber was super sweet and attentive which made it even better. Coming from Miami, I have high expectations when it comes to food, and this definitely delivered. I'll be back for sure.

Outdoor seating along Mill ave is wonderful. The restaurant gets busy so it feels a little crowded when it does, but the decor is classy, and while it can get noisy it's still very comfortable. The food was very good. I particularly loved the melted brie appetizer and the chicken was perfection and a lot of it.

I walked in fully expecting this place to be overhyped, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite spots in Tempe. The vibe is great. I loved the open kitchen and watching the chefs on the grill. Our server was awesome and gave solid recommendations. We started with the milk bread, pibil dumplings, and tuna pineapple ceviche. The bread was fine but forgettable. The dumplings were the clear winner. Great short rib filling with an incredible sauce. I would order multiple plates next time. The ceviche was solid overall, even though the smoked pineapple did not stand out much. For mains, we tried the short rib, wood-fire steak, and lemongrass half chicken. The short rib was basic and not something I would order again. The steak was cooked perfectly with a nice smoky flavor and paired well with the chimichurri. The lemongrass chicken surprised me the most. Smoky, slightly sweet, and tangy, and different from anything I have had locally. Overall, this place exceeded my expectations. It is a great spot for a date, a family dinner, or when you want to impress. I would definitely go back.

Filthy Animal offers a really fun, flavorful experience for date night! (We also saw a lot of people here for business dinners and such.) Really unique ambiance, they leaned into this safari, animorphic vibe. Service was awesome and it seems every part of staff helps out, coming by to drop off dishes as they are ready or refill drinks. We tried a bunch of different items and none of them disappointed.

Filthy Animal has only been on our radar for a hot minute, but WOW are we glad someone put it there! We were headed to a show nearby and couldn't have picked a more perfectly located spot. From the second you walk in, you feel like you've been transported to some retro jungle-chic hideaway -- animal print everywhere, moody vibes, and the staff rocking classy vintage-style uniforms. It's giving glam safari and we were here for it. To kick things off, I ordered the vegan ceviche with a jalapeño margarita -- and let me tell you... they understood the assignment. The pop of pomegranate with the sweetness of plantain? Absolute texture magic. Meanwhile, the cast-iron melted brie at our table had everyone swooning. Sadly it wasn't GF so I had to live vicariously through their blissful bites -- but honestly, watching that cheese pull was its own experience. For mains, my husband chose the Lemongrass Half Chicken. Plot twist: when it arrived, the low lighting disguised the fact that it was quite undercooked (only reason for the 4 stars). Once we realized, the staff handled it like total pros -- kind, apologetic, and beyond accommodating. They offered to remake it or switch it out entirely. He pivoted to the Ancho Chili Glazed Pork Chop and OH. MY. WORD. If there was ever a silver lining to a chicken mishap, this was it. That pork chop was DIVINE -- juicy, flavorful, absolute perfection. I went with the Bomba Rice and it was STELLAR. Every bite was bold and satisfying. To top off their incredible hospitality, the manager surprised us with a chocolate blackberry dessert. It was stunning -- and that rich, creamy chocolate ice cream (the GF portion)? A dream. All in all, we'll absolutely be back... just maybe sticking to literally everything except the chicken.

Bombi rice risotto, fabulous!

Filthy Animal is a play on words as it grabs your attention and makes you remember it. Please don't let the name confuse you, it is NOT organ meat. The restaurant is beautifully decorated. I feel the need to wear a safari pith helmet and khaki. The upscale lighting and artwork is stunning. We went with our friends who are mostly vegan and very adventurous. The menu can be meat heavy but the small plates are intriguing and have well thought out flavor combos. The evening was nice and our reservations early so we elected to dine outside. Our only issue was the misters were going so strong that water droplets can down like rain. Once notified, the restaurant shut them off. We had real intrigue with the small plate flavor combinations, unusual ingredients groupings and waitress suggestions. The milk bread with miso tomato butter, almond and kalamata was the first to arrive. The rolls were slightly sweet, pillowy and unbelievable when accompanied with the savory butter. I easily could of polished off two plates on my own. The heirloom tomato and spicy peanut dressing with onions, daikon radish, baby gem, whipped queso de cabra, mala chili and sour nut was a show stopper. It was not over-powering but kept you coming back for one more bite. A definite must try. The Taridito with yellow tail, grilled peaches, avacado crema, habanero passion fruit aguachile, and crispy quinoa was good but our least favorite. The tuna cerviche with grilled pineapple, leche de tigre, crispy quinoa and lightly salted long plantain chips were over the moon good. The sweet, salty and savory flavors were perfectly blended and memorable. Our final selection was the bomba rice risotto with shrimp, linguica, green peas, piquillo peppers, kosho aioli and parmesan was smooth, amazing flavor and warm to the soul. A truly incredible dish. It is difficult to express just how pleasantly surprised and absolutely tasty our dining was tonight. The name completely threw us off. A heart felt thank you to our female server and her suggestions. Filthy Animal is a new favorite dining space in the hip ASU center of town. All of us will definitely be returning to discover the rest of the menu. If you have the opportunity, make reservations and book a seat to a truly enjoyable evening of dining at Filthy Animal. Great Job!

So delicious and an experience in itself!! We enjoyed some light bites as well - the Edamame Hummus and Shishito Peppers. Both were fantastic! I love that their menu points out which items are gluten-free... and our server even warned me that the plantain chips in the Edamame Hummus could have cross-contamination... so I very much appreciate that heads up! I love the giant disco balls and the aesthetic of this place. We started with the appletini and lemongrass highball (non-alcoholic). My friend and I ended up switching drinks because we liked each other's more than our own. For the second round, we ordered the brandy spritz and primrose martini. We weren't fans of the brandy spritz, although my friend grew into it. The primrose martini was quite good, I liked it better than the appletini. For snackies, we ordered the glizzy gaunlet, which was basically a tower of carbs. It came with 5 mini dogs with milk bread, and potato wedges. There were 3 sauces, my favorite in order were the: truffle dijonnaise, kosho aioli, and korean ketchup. We enjoyed this more than the food at Filthy Animal. Although it was pricey ($22) for just carbs and hardly any protein. The milk bread was delicious and the mini dogs were pretty good too. The potato wedges were cooked perfectly, slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Would I return? Probably not. The food was better than the drinks but it wasn't outstanding.

The most recent was…read moreon a Thursday night around 10:30 p.m. This speakeasy is located on Mill Ave., the center of Tempe's party scene. Because of its location, parking isn't easy. If you're looking for free parking, you're going to have a long walk. Outside of that, you'll have to pay for parking in a garage or metered street parking. Ambiance (4/5): Hint hint. Idle Hands is located inside Devil's Hideaway. A true speakeasy shouldn't have signage outside indicating its location. Unfortunately, there's a sign for Idle Hands outside of Devil's Hideaway which takes away the sense of mystery and intrigue that a true speakeasy provides. Outside of this hiccup, it's a cool speakeasy. It's intimate, with 10 or so seats at the bar and about 10 seats in booths facing the bar. There's a projector screen behind the bar that had mystical motion graphics the first time I stopped by (thinking wizards) and Halloween motion graphics the second time (with it being a day before the holiday). There were some other Halloween decorations up. The only area of improvement? The music often doesn't match the vibe. A lot of the music they were playing on my last visit was Irish music that would be fitting for a pub. Service (4/5): I had the same bartender each time. He knows how to make a good drink and is pretty efficient. When you close out, he only gives you the merchant copy. Which is a pet peeve of mine. Let me get that customer copy too. But overall, a good experience. Especially at a college bar. Food (N/A): I've only had drinks both times. Idle Hands actually doesn't have food, but Devil's Hideaway does. And you're allowed to bring food from there into the speakeasy. Drinks (4.5/5): It's pretty surprising to see a speakeasy on a college campus. I was impressed with the creativity of the menu, both in terms of the ingredients used and the fusion of flavors. I've had a different cocktail each time, and they've all been great. My favorite was one served in a box filled with smoke. Talk about a cool presentation! The hallmarks of a solid speakeasy are elevated cocktails, nice ambiance (dimly lit), an intimate space, and mystery/intrigue. While the intrigue is lacking at Idle Hands, and the music can be improved, they hit it out of the park in the other areas. One of my favorite speakeasies I've been to in Phoenix (and surrounding areas). I am, after all, the self-appointed king of speakeasies. The king gives his stamp of approval.
