A little dump of a place in AJ that serves huge sandwiches on fresh bread. Cold Cuts were all good as we tried a Turkey and a Roast beef. Had the Meat Slicer prepare party trays for my sons birthday today. I must tell you they hit a home run. The bread was phenomenal so moist and delicious. The meat and cheese trays were perfect. They separated the trays and there was 6 POUNDS OF MEAT. No one went away hungry. The meat was of very good quality and sliced so well. Loaded with flavor. Not very impressive looking building but the old saying, don't judge a book by its cover. Ordered a meatball sandwich and while we waited could not believe how big the sandwiches were coming out of the kitchen. HUGE. Got my meatball sandwich. It was classified as a small and I had to laugh. It was very large but that's not what matters. The taste...amazing. Covered with homemade marinara sauce, mozzarella and provolone on homemade French bread. Like the guy told me, this ain't a pick it up and eat it situation and gave me fork. This has to be one the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. Came here with my mom and got the Italian which was HUGE and so good, and my mom got the turkey/bacon and she loved it .It was so good I came back on Thursday for the Meatball, which was also Incredible. This place was an excellent surprise. Just before beginning our day sight seeing and hiking along The Apache Trail, we decided to skip the chains and try something local. We found The Meat Slicer and made our way. We pulled And and saw the tiny deli and decided to give it a try. Best decision ever. We both ordered the turkey bacon clubs, they asked are you sure you don't want to split one? "We're both grown men, I think I can handle a sandwich" I thought to myself. I was wrong. These things were huge! And delicious. We both had to have them wrap up the second half of the sandwich and we put them in the cooler for dinner later. [UPDATE] I don't believe Yelp ratings should be awarded for life like monarchs, popes and Supreme Court justices. So I'm knocking this place down a star today based on the "Gutbuster" pizza I just got compared to the one I got in August. That one four months ago was was eyepopping impressive and the guy who made it was really into customer service. This time different employees were blah and bored and the pizza was more like Papa Murphy's, okay but not too impressive and missing some ingredients. Plus there was some excuse that their delivery guy brought the wrong crust (so I guess they're not made in-house as I thought they were) and that somehow became MY problem so I had to pay more than the advertised price, but for less ingredients and less than stellar attitudes. That $11.99 pizza ended up costing me almost $16 bucks and that outsourced crust tasted a bit old. I'm not sure what the deal is in AJ, maybe it's a seasonal whatever-you-can-get-away-with when the snowbirds are in town, but I've got news for this place ... your store was empty on a Saturday night. Started to hit 4 stars but thought what I really wanted was 4.5... that being stated I thought they deserved a round up and not down. Splitting hairs! I had the #1 Italian sub. Not really a sub but a giant - absolutely huge - sandwich. I would say it is the biggest sandwich I have ever been a part of. As an East Coast guy I would say it wasn't the most authentic Italian sandwich but it was fully loaded and tasty! This was a bit out of the way for me but glad I made the drive. Don't expect much for chips (small bags with limited options) or ambience (none) but good guys making the samie and a sandwich that I could only tackle half. read more

I was looking forward to this as I drove into town for the day. I always peruse Yelp prior to a trip to find the best place to eat locally and this stood out. We walked in and the decor was sparse. A large counter with a couple seats and a very friendly owner who was happy to talk sandwiches. I settled on a speciality sandwich that impressed me by the size of it. Filled with several meats and cheese, I was fairly excited about trying it. To my dismay, I learned quickly the sandwich with all show and no substance. The meat was all store bought and the cheese was stacked on five high. The sheer volume of the sandwich can be impressive to some but the quality was what ruined the meal. This place is off the hook! A whole sandwich is usually 6 meals for me! Just had their Thursday only Meatball sub. It's the bomb! The picture is how much is left of what I could eat and remain comfortable. Try the Turkey Bacon Avacado bring a friend and split one. The bread is real deal too from a Gilbert bakery. While cruising in the area My Wife, My Parents, and I decided to stop at the Meat Slicer for lunch. The sandwiches are legendary and I had see them for myself. Upon walking into the place we were greated by the owner who takes the words "friendly" and "hospitable" to another level. He explained the size of the sandwiches and when I told him I wanted The Slicer Works sandwich he said it'd be enough for 2 so My Wife would be eating the other half by default. My Parents followed suit and ordered the same. We each grabbed a bag of chips and a bottle of water and took a seat outside in the quite comfortable Arizona November weather. As I sat there thinking to myself..."one sandwich for both of us is gonna be a small meal..." the owner arrived with two plates and stated that he brought forks for the ladies as he turned and walked back in the restaurant. Were the plates in front of My Wife and Mother with huge half sandwiches the entire meal I thought? They were huge so it wasn't out of the question. Then the owner arrived again with two more plates with halves for My Dad and I. Now the legend of this place is crystal clear. A half sandwich, bag of chips, and bottle of water stuffed me like a Thanksgiving Turkey. In fact I felt like I ate a Thanksgiving Turkey when I was done. I'm a big eater and this was the first time a half sandwich put the hurt on me. It was around 1 in the afternoon and we all knew that this may very well be all the food needed food for the remainder of the day. The Meat Slicer also has Take and Bake Pizza. My Parents dropped us off at the Mesa airport later that week and after exchanging goodbye's I requested that they get a pizza at some time in the future and send me a picture. Any place that can make a meal out of a half sandwich must make a pizza that requires a forklift to move. Well, they came through and the pizzas were everything I expected. My Parents had positive things to say about them as well. I can't wait to try one when we're back in the area. The Meat Slicer was a great experience with good food, a friendly crew, and an Owner that cares about his product and customers. I took a friend there for lunch today and while they agreed the sandwich they had was great, they said that would be their first and last time. The lady working the counter taking orders needs an attitude adjustment. My friend asked for light mayo and light mustard and when she read back the order, she said light dressing. I commented it was light mayo and light mustard and she replied that's what she said. I told her she said light dressing which might mean light mayo and light mustard to her but it doesn't to us so it might be a good idea to repeat the order in terms the customer used and understands. I don't think she could care less. I ordered my sandwich on rye with all toppings plus horseradish but what was served was not on rye and when I brought that up, was told they were out of rye. My sandwich also lacked horseradish and when I brought that up, they were out of it as well. read more

I read about this place on another post and wanted to give it a try. My hubby and I were greeted by 2 very friendly people. After a quick look at the menu, I chose the Italian sandwich and my hubby fir the "meat slicer". Oh mylanta, the amount of food we got was crazy. These sandwiches were so big, we couldn't get our mouths around the whole thing. Heavy on meat and cheese and light on the veggies (unlike other places).
