My first time here! Sam made me feel like family!!! Teased me and was super friendly. I got the Miami Fat boy. My friend got the Miami Fat Bit with double meat. And my other friend got the Chef salad. WOW!!! The Miami without double meat still had A LOT of meat!! It was delicious. Sam makes the bread fresh daily himself! My friend LOVED her chef salad. Absolutely fantastic Subs. The bread is super fresh and delicious. You can't beat the portion size either. I'd buy the large size and we can split it between three people. Sam is great, I at first thought he was a little gruff but find he has a terrific sense of humor and super accommodating. Luv it and Will definitely continue to frequent this place. read more

Simple looking little spot tucked inside a gas station. You would not expect to get such a DELICIOUS sandwich here but WOW! So happy I stopped. San was extremely accommodating and made a sandwich so good I couldn't help but go back the next day! read more

Sam makes the best subs!!! We probably eat them every couple of weeks. The sub rolls are always fresh and delicious, many different varieties. His lunch meats are very flavorful! I moved to Mesa from MI just over 4 years ago and his subs are the only ones I'll eat! read more

4.5 stars. I like this place! I only found it because of yelp reviews. I am through this part of town all the time and didn't even know it was there. Who knew there would be a good spot in a gas station? Owner is there making the sandwiches himself and is genuinely friendly. Epitome of small biz IMO. Says he has been there 22 years. I got turkey, roast beef, and cheddar sub. The footlongs are huge, could feed two easily. Bring cash, he doesn't take cards. This is the best hidden treasure! I will never go to s@bw*y again. Sam is the owner AND the sandwich maker. His bread is made fresh daily and he slices the meat as you order. I felt like I just walked into the little corner cafe where all the men stop for coffee every morning. There were 4/5 men having lunch and just hanging out with Sam. He seems to be very loved. The bread seems to be the key to this guy's success. Sam doesn't use Boars Head and despite being sliced fresh, the turkey just isn't the greatest meat available. Sam was texting and seem bored as I arrived, but luckily I read the bread choices beforehand because he only offered white bread to me. Sam only takes cash as well which is quite antiquated and since I only had a $10, I couldn't afford the $10.50 combo with cash. The bread and onions are all you can really taste as the smoked turkey was well gas station quality. Most people who order subs at the station don't care about meat quality, but meat matters. read more

Tried this place out today and I have to say, Sam's is the bomb. Okay, okay. Yes, it is a little sketchy looking from the outside, and yes, it is located inside of a Chevron gas station, but I've had MANY sandwiches in my life and Sam's is a high tier contender. We had three 12" sandwiches to share: Buffalo chicken, Sam's Big Boy, and a turkey/roast beef with provolone. Each sandwich was assembled on fresh baked Italian white bread by the man himself and everything was delicious. We even had a chance to chat with the owner for a few minutes and learned that he moved here from Chicago and has been making sandwiches and serving the Mesa area for over 23 years. We're super excited to have found a quality small business deli here in Mesa and will definitely be back soon. I'll be sure to take some pictures next time. We ate everything too quick this first time around. read more

I'm not sure about these raving reviews? Wishing I had the same experience but it was quite the opposite. Moving from Philadelphia, I was craving an authentic Italian hoagie made on fresh bread. I turned to Yelp and found Sam's Famous Subs. After reading the reviews, although not recent ones, I was excited to give it a try. Once arrived, I quickly discovered it was inside of a gas station. Upon entering and approaching, I noticed a gentlemen behind the counter, preoccupied by his cellphone. While standing there, I made several observations: (1) He failed to acknowledge me. (2) When finally approaching the register, he said "do you know what you want? It wasn't the most welcoming message. (3) It's cash only, no cards accepted. (4) I wasn't thrilled by the setup and seemed unsanitary. I ended up not ordering and leaving. As soon as driving away, I noticed the same gentleman standing outside and smoking a cigarette. I must've been an inconvenience. I definitely won't be back and don't recommend to you! read more

LEGIT!! From the fresh cut meats to the veggies this place is good. I'm glad for Yelp or I would never find this place. Yes, it's in a Chevron gas station but it is pumpin out so dang good Sammie's at a very lost cost. Breads are very good and tasty. Update: get the Sammie as the way the owner prepares. If it's jus oil and Vinegar then do it. Last time I didn't put that on there and in my typical mail on mustard and the same sandwich so much better his way. read more

Came for a late Friday lunch to-go. I love the guy in charge! (Assuming he's Sam but I didn't ask...) He is very sweet and friendly. I ordered a 6in hot pastrami sandwich on the jalapeño bread with everything on top and asked him to make it how he would want it. The sandwich was less than $5 which was very good considering he cuts the meat right there and it was stuffed full of things. It was insanely messy (don't question all the napkins people, you need them) but so so tasty. As he was making it, he said "you will like this!" And I DID. Very worth for a quick bite to eat. For some reasons gas stations have all the best sandwiches lol read more

Stop in at the Chevron and Sami's is right there. Sami makes the best subs in the Valley ! I love the hot pastrami with double meat, jalapeños, olive oil and tomatoes. Inside the rear most of this chevron you will find a superb sandwich shop. Sam will be there ready to craft a delectable sandwich of your fancy. Cash only heads up. But it's well worth the time. I had a ham, salami and provolone sandwich with all the extras and I was blown away. Everything is fresh, bread and veggies and sliced in front of you deli style. Definitely dropping by when I go through Mesa again. read more

First know that this place is cash only, so be prepared for that. It's located in the back of a gas station. I ordered a BLT. The bacon was crispy which was good. The bread was ok. I'm not sure what all the rave is about this place. Bread didn't seem to be baked fresh, if it was I couldn't tell. I didn't eat my BLT until I got back to the office and that was when I discovered it had onions on it. I didn't order it with onions, so not sure why they were on there. He asked what I wanted in it and I simply ordered a BLT, with bacon, lettuce and tomato. So I had to pick off about a million onions. My sandwich ended up having an onion taste even though picked them off. BLT was average otherwise. I won't be back. read more

Can I give Sam's 6 stars? Me and my husband came here often until we moved out of state for 3 years. We recently moved back, and today we were both craving a bomb sandwich. So Sam's it was! Fresh bread, fresh sliced meats and cheeses .. fresh everything! Today I got the Sam's big boy, which is turkey, ham and pastrami with provolone. I added lettuce, onions, banana peppers, mayo, mustard oil/vinegar on jalapeno bread! Love the family vibe we get from Sam also. I have driven by here hundreds of times but, today I decided to finally give it a try and I'm quite glad I did. I ordered the foot long turkey sub on jalapeño bread and it was delicious. The meat is sliced right in front of you and Sam then asks what you would like on it. I like supporting small business and this place is legit. Far better than you will get at a chain sub place. Sam is a friendly great sun maker, unfortunately a man who recently found a job working nites, haven't been back since to store. Funny his same demeanor is noted with a housing program he's in. I'm a veteran who did not deserve his disgrace to me as I frenquented store. I'm sad I cannot or want to go inside again. I asked myself how would they hire a discraceful man just because he needed job, to get outta a program he's under, feeling sorry perhaps. Everyone deserves a chance. However, NO VETERAN DESERVES THE UGLINESS BY A CREEP HAS NO UNDERSTANDING I SERVED FOR THE BETTER OF HUMANITY. such a waste for our veterans. Have somebody who doesn't have a clue how he's free to cuss a veteran out, just asking a question. Yet now I understand I did not need to engage with such an entitled no mannered individual. Sam's bakes his own breads, cuts and makes all his condiments daily including hot and sweet peppers, then slices all the meats right in fron of you. He has several types of breads such as, jalapeño, french onion, parmesan, sesame seed, and the classics white and wheat. His hours are for lunch only 9-3 m-f 9-1 sat. Cash only!!! Sam's has the best subs anywhere! Yes, it is in the back of a gas station, but get past that because you WILL get a great sandwich. He is cash only, but it's worth a trip to the atm. Extremely fresh bread, he cuts the meat right in front of you.... I just ate a footlong with double meat and I want another just thinking about it. It is the best sandwich place around! read more

My girlfriend ordered the Meat Lovers Omelette, which she was able to customize to her liking. She reported that it was really good, so apparently the omelette and her are on better terms than I was with this place years ago. I went with the Mexican Skillet. I like my food to have some texture and, preferably, a little crunch, so our waitress, Sandy, recommended having the home fries deep-fried. Naturally, I accepted this challenge. The result was...interesting. The potatoes were definitely crispy, but somewhere along the way my brain stopped registering them as breakfast potatoes and started interpreting them as potato chips that had somehow wandered into my skillet. It messed with my breakfast senses a little. Sandy even admitted the potatoes are not always consistent, which I appreciated. At least we were all being honest about the potato situation. The chorizo was good, although it leaned more toward an Americanized version than the deeply seasoned, distinctly Mexican chorizo I was expecting. Still enjoyable, just a different flavor profile than anticipated. Overall, though, the meal was good, and there are several other things on the menu that caught my attention. That is usually the best indicator that we will be back: when I leave already knowing what I want to order next time. And now, Sandy deserves her own paragraph. She was wonderful. Sweet, personable, clearly hardworking, and attentive without hovering over us like she was conducting a federally funded breakfast surveillance operation. She checked on us an appropriate number of times, was helpful with recommendations, and genuinely seemed to care about our experience. So, after giving this place a second chance, I would say the verdict is: The past has officially been forgiven. The food was good, the service was even better, and there is enough on the menu to warrant another visit. Sometimes restaurants deserve a second chance and apparently, so do breakfast potatoes.

My son and I had been coming here for 16 years before the owner, John Martino, sold the business during COVID. He used to own the ice cream shop right next door, too. Unfortunately, the previous management ran the deli into the ground, and the hygiene became completely atrocious. After a terrible experience where we literally witnessed a massive health hazard involving a diaper change and food handling at the same time, we walked out and vowed never to return. We hadn't been back in over four years. Fast forward to today. My son and I were running errands and he mentioned wishing the original "Meat Slicer" was still around. As we drove by, a new sign in the parking lot caught my eye. The outside was beautifully fixed up, looking incredibly inviting and nostalgic. My son was incredibly hesitant, but the moment we pulled in, I could see positive changes that proved it was under completely new management. I am also dealing with severe hip pain and need a replacement, so I originally planned to stay in the car and let him go in alone. The moment I hobbled through the front doors, John Martino and his partner, Karen, met us with an absolute light of joy. They brought so much immediate warmth into the room. Incredibly, John recognized me right away. He couldn't believe how much my son had grown, saying, "As soon as you walked in, Pat, I knew that was your kid because you guys used to come in together all the time and always talk about how much you love the sandwiches." They completely hooked us up. They easily accommodated my keto diet by making my meal protein-style with their amazing deli meats. We sat, caught up, laughed, and giggled the entire time. This place is phenomenal. It instantly brought me and my kid back to when things were so simple and nice. Going out to have lunch together when he was a kid, and now doing it again as a 32-year-old adult at a place we have loved for nearly two decades is just priceless.
