This is for my last two visits in the last two weeks. The Cilantro omelet is great and bursting with freshness, filed with avocado and high quality cheddar (from Crowley they say) and topped with cilantro pesto. It paired well with rye toast (comes lightly buttered - good luck getting it dry) and slightly spicy patty sausage. Home fries are very good, but I always want them crispier. For lunch, I got their special sandwich to go - grilled chicken, prosciutto, Grafton cheddar (even better than Crowley), arugula and a pesto like sauce on rye ( I like rye bread ok). News flash - they take credit cards and have for 3 years! Now I can stop running to the ATM and a good thing because my $12 cash would not have covered the bill for the sandwich. What I most like about this place is that it is between a favorite camping/hiking spot of mine and civilization, just a smidgen on the country side to be modest, and the food is incredible and fresh. You should get anything with cheese (even if you do not like cheese) and/or apples. I am not responsible for harm or death due to food allergies, but you will like it. They have a few variants of ham / apple / cheese sandwiches, omelets, and so forth that will yield one perfect bite after another. I do not know anything about Ludlow or what it has to offer overall, but if The Hatchery were the only reason, it is a good place to take a pit stop. Food was decent but most of the woman who work there are absolutely miserable! Hostess seemed bothered that she had to seat people; pretty sure that's her job. Then the woman who was running the food was annoyed that we weren't sure who ordered what as our 7 top was split up and we didn't know what the rest of our party ordered at the other table because we weren't seated together. I overheard the hostess telling our waitress (the only nice person we encountered there) that she didn't sit another 7 top together because she didn't feel like pushing tables together. The hostess and another waitress (who came in later) commiserated behind our table (while crashing dishes into the slop bucket) about how mad they were at a different waitress for not showing up and leaving them short staffed. How do I know all of this? Well they weren't speaking quietly at all and super unprofessional. For a business that thrives on tourism they need to treat their patrons with way more respect and learn about being professional. Seems to me after reading reviews that almost every bad review is because of rude wait staff.....I hope the owner reads this and makes some changes. Oh and don't even think about asking if they have Wifi they will treat you as if you are asking for their first born. read more

The service was excellent; they seated our party of 7 within less than 15 minutes, and they were cheery and polite even when they were slammed. With three different servers, our orders were taking quickly and food was delivered in a timely manner. The food was solid. Not amazing but very good. I'd give them 5 stars, but it was a little expensive for VT. For example, $2.25 for coffee is a little steep. And, as I said before, the food was pretty standard. read more

Went here on the last day of our trip to Ludlow. The coffee itself was fine, however they do not keep the creamers on ice. They all smelled sour, tangy and cheese like. That being said, we could not drink the coffee. 2 of us had omelettes and both of us found a hair in them. Waitress offered to have mine remade but never apologized. My sister in law did not get an apology either and they did not offer to remake hers. Felt like the servers gave us an attitude after this. When we went to pay I asked for change to leave a tip and the lady ripped the money out of my hand. Will not be returning. read more

The food here is delicious! The hatch-a-cado with cheddar, so good; the downhill with pancakes (we split the pancakes because they're huge), so good. We still don't feel comfortable eating inside and they don't have outdoor seating, but there's a small courtyard/park across the street with benches. Won't be an option soon because of the weather but their food was worth it. read more

Every time I go here I regret it! Mediocre food, small portions for an upscale price. A basic sandwich runs you $14. Absolutely insane! I won't be returning. Obviously this is not a five star Manhattan dinner spot but in it's class of a breakfast & lunch coffee shop I would say The Hatchery is tops. In Vermont, where comfort food is generally your only option, they also have some very good and creative options so everyone is happy from the picky to the adventurous. Food quality is always first rate and the service is fast & friendly. Yes, the prices are higher than you'd expect in an urban area but for Vermont they're not out of line. We don't have the customer base and a lot of locals don't eat out much. Just keep in mind that you're in a ski town and if they charge much less they won't be here when you return 9 months later. read more

Wonderful filling breakfast. All the food was delicious and well prepared. Worth the wait as there is a line during busy times. It felt like all fresh and homemade ingredients like the pesto on the Cilantro omelet. I would have given it 5 stars except our waitress made several mistakes (home fries on an order with a no-carb, multiple request for water, forgot a sausage side, etc. Fortunately another waitress stepped in and did a wonderful job making up for the other one. Love this place! I had the good fortune of eating breakfast here on my first ever ski trip to Okemo. Ludlow is a quant little town and the Hatchery is a jewel. The food was plentiful and very good. Being in Vermont, of course I had to have the pancakes with maple syrup along with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and potatoes. The staff was very nice and fun to interact with. If you come to Ludlow, I highly recommend them. read more

Breakfast food is solid, but lunch entrees leave much to be desired. Patty melt came with cheese still cool, while the lettuce and tomato for a burger were limp and bland (in peak tomato season!). We are visiting in town for a few days and I'm realizing this is not the place to come for food and service. We ate out both mornings and were greeted with so/so service and average food. The service was very slow here and they weren't busy. The food was ok, my pancakes were not done all the way and my eggs a little dry. My husband got the biscuits and gravy and that was pretty good. There isn't much competition in the area so this would do if you end up here. read more

Had our first breakfast here today and it was wonderful! Eggs cooked just right. Hash that was "different but flavorful ". Home fried potatoes with just the right seasoning and fresh green onion. Of course is off season so wasn't too busy but we hope to return before our vacation ends. Clean, comfortable, food served promptly as well. Highly recommended! read more

Let me begin by saying that I am not a food snob nor do expect perfection when I dine. My wife and I had a late lunch (brunch) at the Hatchery. I ordered the gravy and biscuit and my wife had the NY strip wrap. I took one bite of my biscuit and gravy and it tasted vile. It tasted and smelled so bad that it sickened me. I asked my wife to taste the dish and she agreed that it was terrible. I notified the server and asked if maybe something out of the ordinary had happened during preparation and was told no. My wife said that her dish was very good. This restaurant has a very good rating so I must have caught it on a bad day for gravy and biscuits. read more

The best pancakes you'll ever have!!! AND the biggest! Seriously, these things are huge. It looks like they have custom sized plates just for the pancakes!! They're super fluffy and have the perfect buttermilk flavor. The chocolate chip ones are my favorite! They're so amazing, the pancake mix is sold in bags so you can make it at home. (Though it's never as good as getting fresh pancakes at the restaurant.) That probably says more about my cooking than the mix! The breakfast potatoes are awesome, and I LOVE the breakfast sandwich! And let me tell you...this is one serious sandwich!! It's mammoth sized with fresh Italian bread, thick and crispy smoked bacon, Vermont cheddar cheese and eggs. Each bite is bursting with flavor! It gets pretty cold up there on the mountain, ladies and gents. Breakfast at The Hatchery is the ideal start for a perfect ski day, keeping you full and energized until the slopes close. Been here a few times but I don't think we will return. We usually give a place 2-3 visits to get a real taste of the place. Our last trip was the final decision maker for us. We can overlook the tables that are way too close to each other (you feel like you are at the same table with everyone else) the dated dusty decor and the ever raising prices, but the waitress' dirty finger nails really grossed out my wife. I ordered poached eggs and the waitress said they were not offering them today. Huh? My wife ordered a plain omelette and the waitress said "you mean scrambled eggs?" so my wife said no, I would like a plain omelette and the waitress says "by plain omelette you mean scrambled eggs right?" Guess they don't make plain omelettes but can give you scrambled eggs if you want. We looked at each other wondering what the hell the girl was talking about. This is a great place to grab breakfast before riding or skiing at okemo. The prices are reasonable, the service is friendly, and the food is straight forward diner-style fare. Why 3 Stars?? Def a 4 star solid breakfast spot. Yes the prices are high but its breakfast! Whats another $3 when you here on vacation going skiing.....nothing. The Food: I got the Downhill and it was a LOT of food. Pancakes or french toast, hash browns, bacon (Which is awesome),and 2 eggs. I got SO full and i can eat a lot. Corned beef hash was good but not crazy good. go for the downhill, the french toast, pancakes or specials. Coffee was good and service was fast. This was a great experience and very good meal. Our server was so nice. When we are up here to ski we never venture off the mountain for breakfast. We had the opportunity and what a great breakfast. I had the poutine and it had a great sauce. My husband has the biscuits and gravy. 2 biscuits was too much! I think 1 opened would be better. A friend and I stayed up the road on a weekend getaway, and decided to stop in the Hatchery for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It was about 10 in the morning, and the place was barely half full... should've known right there the place wouldn't be that special. Anyway, the waitress who waited on us was low energy to say the least. Didn't smile once, and forgot to ask us if we wanted coffee or juice. We both ordered scrambled eggs, and that came with a choice of bread and hash browns. Pretty easy breakfast food to cook, right? Well...the eggs were dry, the bread was cold, and the potatoes were undercooked and not seasoned. Disappointing to say the least. If you call yourself a breakfast spot, but can't get any of the basics right, you probably should rethink your whole business plan. read more
