Monte Cristo

The setting is cramped and loud and tables are set so close together you can overhear every conversation (obviously can't be helped but it is a deterrent). The server was very friendly and told us to help ourselves to bottomless soda and coffee. My wife had the Monte Cristo - it was ok, not remarkable. I had the Green Mountain omelet with cheddar, ham, apples, and apple butter and it was phenomenal. I added a side of gravy for the potatoes and it was perfect. Definitely drop by if you're in the area!

I read a lot of reviews about long lines and thought since my kids and I were visiting in the off season it wouldn't be a problem. We arrived 15 minutes after opening on a Saturday morning and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Not too bad in my book. Once seated the server points out where to help yourself to drinks and takes the food order. It was nice to be able to refill coffee at my leisure. The food was great and adorable. Anything with powdered sugar has their hatching chick logo on it. We loved everything we tried, the breakfast wrap, pancakes, banana bread, potatoes and coffee all hit the spot. I wish there was a location in my state.

Great stop on Route 100 to enjoy fresh OJ and a fulfilling breakfast. Cilantro pesto!! Ask for it! I enjoyed the Vermonter omelette/Western omelet and our table shared a giant cinnamon bun! Everyone here was friendly and we can't wait to come back.

Western omelette

Delicious breakfast, friendly staff! Order a Bloody Mary if you are a fan... I feel like with bloody Mary's they are either great or terrible and they have a great one! I loved their olives and pickled asparagus. I had the western omelette (yum) and my daughter had the cilantro omelette (she loved it). Their biscuit was huge and delicious!

I come here a lot and it always is super good fast food service, awesome food and seating! ( sitting by window can see the okemo mountain!) Servers are super nice and kind people, overall would definitely come here again five stars!

Absolutely delicious breakfast remixing breakfast staples in creative ways. Two items I can highly recommend are the cinnamon bun French toast which is two slices of cinnamon bun flattened and grilled and the home fries poutine which are home fries covered in sausage gravy and topped with two eggs. The restaurant is small and quaint. Service can be slower during rush time. I'm a fan and will certainly be back.

What do you want from a local cafe? The Hatchery has been a standout star of this pandemic moving to a takeout window and offering up good cheer all year long. We have gone there several times this past year and each time we had big smiles on our faces. Over the summer they served up the best maple creemees with fresh maple syrup and bacon. And now for the ski season, they're offering the best of their menu to go. After a morning of skiing, we ordered online (HUGE bonus) and got cinnamon bun French toast (so good and big it was good even the next day) and the Monte Cristo sandwich which is a French toast sandwich. I ordered the Homefries Poutine and it was just about perfect. Home fries, onion, cheese, sausage gravy and two eggs (over medium, cooked perfectly). So yummy. Their bacon is always a standout too and we had sausage which was also delish. They've been supportive of the community and this place deserves to continue to thrive. Can't wait to eat inside at some point in 2021.

Just how bad exactly does a restaurant have to be to make someone reactivate a Yelp account that's…read morebeen dormant for 9 years, just to warn people? Well, apparently this is it. In my nearly 30 years now working in, with, and patronizing the food and beverage industry, I've never experienced such repugnant service as what Suzy and I had at The Downtown Grocery. I should point out that we weren't just the usual tourist who come to Ludlow to ski. We actually lived here for several years, and I couldn't post this review until we moved away because of the owner's repeated behavior of attacking people on social media who disagree with or criticize him. The food here is "fine", it's not actually bad or anything. But it is tiny in portions (a rarity for Vermont), and it's overly "chef-y" without actually executing well. It's one of those places where the chef probably thinks that he would get a Michelin star if only they would come to see him, but I can tell you having eaten at over 100 cumulative Michelin stars in my life this is nowhere close. It fails in flavor, presentation, and execution. But again, not terrible. The setting is actually kind of nice too, somewhat homey which is juxtaposed and ruined by the arrogance of the staff. If you don't mind being guaranteed to wait well beyond your actual reservation time, and then waiting probably another hour just to get some meager first courses, then maybe this is the place for you? I doubt it though, there are so many options just in Ludlow alone, and even more that are worth the 45 minute drive to Woodstock or Manchester to avoid having to eat here if you want a "nice" meal. Whatever you do absolutely avoid coming any time near "stick season" or "mud season" (Vermonters will know) because you're guaranteed to get even worse service then. Ludlow has a ton of restaurants for such a small town, many of them quite good. This is the ONLY place we actively recommended friends and guests of ours to avoid. Even the crappy fake taco place down the street got occasional business over this place due entirely to the repeated piss poor attitude of the two owners.

I had their specialty Ruby Bulleit cocktail with bourbon, ginger liqueur, and blood orange juice - the blood oranges were so juicy and fresh! My partner enjoyed the Smokey Elder, which had mezcal, ginger beer, and some other fun ingredients. After scanning the ever changing menu on their chalkboard - we were inspired to order the maple creme brûlée with fresh black berries. It was delightful. Can't wait to come here for dinner sometime soon. Make sure you make a reservation!

There was a parking lot but we had already parked on-street prior. The interior was cute; there was a cafe and a few tables. On the other side was the kitchen area; they brought out the food to us on the cafe side. The place got busy after we got there; seems to be a hot spot for lunch. We got there around 10:50, they weren't serving food until 11. This was fine since they served coffee and that was priority to us at that time. I had a medium iced maple latte and it was good. For my meal, I had the chicken and waffles sandwich which were decent; there was crispy fried chicken, cole slaw, in between freshly made fluffy waffles. It was overall decent, but something was missing; I think that was some maple syrup or some hot sauce. My child had the fried Mac and cheese donut; it's a Mac and cheese shaped into a donut; this was good and a cute way to present food. Overall, a good spot to get some breakfast and lunch.

We learned that Blue Duck was previously a lunch stop, but is now a very classy dinner restaurant - 5 course tasting menu on Fridays and Saturdays with a fixed price. Each entree was beautiful, unique, very tasty. Ours briefly was 1) sweet corn, ricotta & pesto soup 2) seared Ahi with fried potato and lemon aioli 3) waygu with radish cream, microgreens 4) red gem salad with roasted beets and goat cheese, blueberry vinaigrette 5) Pavlova with berries and oat clusters Wow. The service was attentive and kind. The space was so thoughtfully decorated - everything from the lighting (gentle), to beautiful chairs/tables/dinnerware/flatware/decor- all adds to the beauty, presentation, and ambiance. We traveled here for the skiing, but found this gem of an experience.
