Stopped in on a road trip with my family of three, including a toddler. I wanted to like this place. The menu has charm and ambition. The name resonated with us, as we have a flock of 20 chickens at home. Unfortunately nearly everything that could go wrong did. The kids menu has zero breakfast options at a breakfast diner. Grilled cheese and hot dogs don't belong on a morning menu. When we tried to order a single pancake for our toddler we were told "the order is for two." No offer to help, no alternative suggested. Just a hard no. Because of the menu structure, our 3 year old's meal was literally the most expensive at the table. The menu is not kid friendly. The cost of Orange juice is also not kid friendly. But they did give him a "the hatchery" sticker when we left. When ordering pancakes the server asked "sausage or bacon?" with no mention that either was a $4 add-on. That felt like an upsell we weren't warned about. One of our three meals was completely forgotten and only caught when two plates arrived at the table. Someone sat and watched the rest of us get served. Chives were on all of our savory dishes. Not mentioned anywhere on the menu. We found out by picking them off our food. Not everyone wants chives. We ordered blueberry pancakes. Plain pancakes arrived. We only discovered this after paying when we questioned a duplicate blueberry charge on the bill. The response was defensive until we opened the box and showed them. The resolution was a $2.50 refund for the missing blueberries. The "home fries" are smashed baked potatoes, not what anyone expects from that menu description. Some of the potato pieces were visibly bruised and discolored and should never have left the kitchen. A hollow apology. Complete indifference. We tipped, packed up, and left quietly. We were good guests. This place didn't earn it. read more

BEYOND RUDE. After waiting to be seated for 10 min despite several open tables around me I chose what I'd like to have (an omelet) and mention I'm allergic to wheat. The waitress says "we make pancakes in that same space on the grill, you're ok with that?" I said well could you have the chef just wipe down that portion of the grill it should be fine. She said "I'm not gonna do that, so if you're not ok with contamination then that's not for you". I was like- you can't take two seconds to just wipe it down? I got up and left- I have never EVER had an issue at a breakfast place in my life. They weren't busy- it's a Monday morning, no reason that should have been an issue. The setting is cramped and loud and tables are set so close together you can overhear every conversation (obviously can't be helped but it is a deterrent). The server was very friendly and told us to help ourselves to bottomless soda and coffee. My wife had the Monte Cristo - it was ok, not remarkable. I had the Green Mountain omelet with cheddar, ham, apples, and apple butter and it was phenomenal. I added a side of gravy for the potatoes and it was perfect. I read a lot of reviews about long lines and thought since my kids and I were visiting in the off season it wouldn't be a problem. We arrived 15 minutes after opening on a Saturday morning and had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Not too bad in my book. Once seated the server points out where to help yourself to drinks and takes the food order. It was nice to be able to refill coffee at my leisure. The food was great and adorable. Anything with powdered sugar has their hatching chick logo on it. We loved everything we tried, the breakfast wrap, pancakes, banana bread, potatoes and coffee all hit the spot. This is the second time we have gone here. The first time wasn't so good, but we thought we would give it another try. This time the service was good. The 2 rating is that the food was not very good. We had breakfast and the eggs were okay, nothing special, and not hot. and my English muffing was burnt and was saturated with butter. I think they thought if they put enough butter on it, that I would not taste the burnt parts. I did taste it and it was not pleasant. We also got an overpriced at $11.00, Cinnamon roll that was also burnt and had so much icing on it, that is all you tasted. Very pricy restaurant for what you get. This is exactly the kind of place I was looking for. Recently spent a long weekend with friends in Ludlow, this was our final meal before heading home. Very homey place, definitely no frills, but staff is friendly and food is solid. They have a self serve beverage station with free refills, has everything you need including water, fountain drinks, and hot coffee. They do have alcohol as well that you can order from wait staff. I got the cinnamon roll French toast which was epic, I could not finish it, but it was super tasty and hit the spot. I got a side of the funky spuds which could have been crisped up more, but a satisfying breakfast potato for sure. Loved grabbing coffee to go in my way out for the long ride home. Two items I can highly recommend are the cinnamon bun French toast which is two slices of cinnamon bun flattened and grilled and the home fries poutine which are home fries covered in sausage gravy and topped with two eggs. What do you want from a local cafe? The Hatchery has been a standout star of this pandemic moving to a takeout window and offering up good cheer all year long. We have gone there several times this past year and each time we had big smiles on our faces. Over the summer they served up the best maple creemees with fresh maple syrup and bacon. And now for the ski season, they're offering the best of their menu to go. After a morning of skiing, we ordered online (HUGE bonus) and got cinnamon bun French toast (so good and big it was good even the next day) and the Monte Cristo sandwich which is a French toast sandwich. I ordered the Homefries Poutine and it was just about perfect. Home fries, onion, cheese, sausage gravy and two eggs (over medium, cooked perfectly). So yummy. Their bacon is always a standout too and we had sausage which was also delish. They've been supportive of the community and this place deserves to continue to thrive. It's our favorite breakfast on vacation ever. Long wait but worth it. The cinnamon roll French toast is incredible and huge. We all shared my daughters portion for 2 meals. 8ji I have been going to the hatchery since I first bought a house in ludlow over forty years an ago. While the ownership has changed the food quality has always been excellent service likewise. However the new computer check in is horrendous. We waited over twenty minutes with not one but three tables sitting empty! Then the coup de gras was while the pancake stack used to be 3 pancakes and two dollars less it is now two pancakes and a small snifter of maple syrup. Extra snifter is a 1.50 extra!!! I realize inflation has caused havoc in the rest business but this is beyond the pale! Remember the rest space is not large and wait staff walked by the open tables dozens of times while we waited. This place is fantastic!!! Simple, casual. Self serve delicious bottomless coffee- you can even take one to go! Same with Soda!!! The menu is breakfast and lunch- something for everyone. I got the roasted garlic BLT with turkey- it was HUGE, and so very tasty- for something so simple, they did it right. The staff is cheerful, friendly, and all seemed to be having a good time. (Bottomless coffee doesn't hurt) I had the "cilantro" (wow) Fresh and lovely avocado, VT cheddar, pico, and a squirt of pesto make this quite possibly the best omelette I've had in years. My friend pictured gobbled up the "Hatch-a-cado" and barely let me get a bite! We all funk-a-fied our home fries, and were not disappointed. Staff was super nice and efficient. The food was decent. Some things were pretty good, others mediocre. My daughter's French toast was good and we appreciated the real maple syrup. We actually were in town for a concert so we ate their two days in a row. One of my kids had a Western omelette both days. On the first day the ham in the omlette wasn't diced and I noticed she just pushed it to the side of her plate and sort of ate around it. Diced ham is a standard for a western omelette. So on day two when we ordered we asked for the ham to be diced. The woman looked at us like we were nuts and claimed that it's always diced. And then ahe asked my daughter, "did you like it how it was yesterday, and she felt put on the spot, and so she nodded and the woman said "so you'll like it again." And again it came not diced but in a whole enormous rolled up mob of ham. Pretty gross and pretty lazy that they can't dice some ham. And to shame the guest and bring their kid into things. Party of six walked in around 10:30. They told us it would be a really long wait but it turned out to be only about 15 mins so not bad at all. Not sure if this is Covid related but to order food you scan the QR code on the table, order and pay online and then they bring your food over. Worked great and it was much quicker than the traditional process. On to the food: we had two orders of the cinnamon roll French toast. One 12 year old said it was really good. The other 12 year old said it was "overhyped". Chocolate chip pancakes were a hit. The Vermonster omelette was also enjoyed. Breakfast sandwich was deemed ok. I had the breakfast poutine. No curds, but shredded melted cheddar. In place of regular gravy it was sausage and gravy. Creative take on poutine but it was delicious. read more

This place is small, but mighty. Got here at opening and there was already a line of patrons ready to indulge in a good breakfast. We waited about 15 min and we're seated in the first room, which was super cold! I had to keep my jacket on while eating, but to be fair, it was -20 the day we were here. Service is fantastic. Really friendly and attentive staff, which always makes the experience better. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with eggs and bacon, but being that it was so cold, that bled into the breakfast experience and my plate also got cold quickly. Their fresh squeezed juices were amazing, and their Cinnabon was bomb. I'd try this place again, but preferably on a day it's a little less chilly. We spent about $80 for breakfast for 2, which isn't cheap, but I feel it would have been worth it more if our food wasn't cold! read more

We had a very long wait, but the town surrounding the hatchery is quaint and filled with many Ma and pa shops to entertain you while you await your table. And the wait for brunch is absolutely worth it. We got the sausage and gravy biscuits, seasonal eggnog pancakes, the Cinnamon roll French toast (omg), the cilantro omelette with rye bread, side of corned beef and hash (real chunks of tender corned beef), and some breakfast platters. went to this place for memorial day. Have been many times, have gotten to go orders many times, my family and friends have gone many times. Today was a nightmare and the way my party was treated was not good. To be refused to take an order from my group when we were ready was way out of line. It was not busy when we got there, 3 people working there were standing by our table for a decent amount of time talking about the parade and people and small talk. I told one we were ready to order and i was told this particular person would be over. Many minutes later that person came by our table and I said again we were ready to order. They went to another table that came in before us and she said they were hear before you. That was a true statement and they also had taken twice as long and it seemed they were taking there time to be ready. My group was ready 10 minutes before them and no one would take our order. It was clearly a control thing and they wanted to show me and my group who was in charge. It wasn't that it was busy, it wasn't that we were being demanding, we just happened to decide quickly having been there so many times i guess we just wanted to order. The other group could take an hour to decide i don't care that is their business, when it becomes my business is when the staff/owner decides my group is not important and our time is hers to control. It was inappropriate and it was not the way any business owner should treat a customer. Again for you questioning this post, we simply wanted to order , we made a staff person aware of it and that apparently was worth punishment by the establishment. read more

Great place - but not that big, so I am guessing big lines on the weekend. I had one of the best sausage gravy dishes - flavorful, rich - but not overly flour-y. I always order this at new places and am so often disappointed. Not here - very good. Great with Hatchery's super fresh, perfectly cooked sunnyside up eggs. Had the crab soup to go - very good, surprising amount of crab. Did not expect to see this in Vermont. The staff is very polite, but it is definitely a DIY place - there is a buffet table with water, coffee, condiments, flatware etc.. I prefer that - but people with mobility issues may not. I am taking one star away because of the surprising poor biscuits. The first was a bit burnt - so I ordered another. It wasn't burnt - but it was on the dry side. still, I would go back again. read more
