Been wanting to try this for a while but finally snagged a reservation. It's tucked behind the great wine and cheese store. And it has great wine to be sure. But don't sleep on the cocktails (the Boss drink hit the spot). And the dishes! The watermelon gazpacho was outrageously good. So was the tuna tartare. The gnocchi were huge melted in your mouth and came with summer fresh corn and tomatoes. So good. And the trout was delicious as well. A great spot for an elevated dinner in town. Cool place on an old renovated house. Small and cozy with an upstairs. Small bar made a great drink (I had the "spice and smoke" which was unique and delicious. I'm had the clams and sausage bake and it was terrific. Spouse had the pasta (ricotta gnudi with butternut squash) which got rave reviews. They are open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We went on Saturday and had a delightful server. Kitchen might have gotten a bit overwhelmed as sit-down to exit was a bit over two hours without appetizers. Even with that we will go back for sure. We were in Ludlow for our girls' college reunion at the dawn of stick season and were lucky enough to catch Stemwinder right before closing for a month+. We had incredible farm-to-table food that I think we will remember for a long time. Not pictured is the old Favorite pizza we also ordered. Everything was fresh and delicious. The staff were lovely and accommodating. We'd decided to try the place after we showed up during their closed hours but were still let in to check out the menu for later and allowed to enter the wine shop from there - where we chatted with a wonderful employee and learned what 'stick season' is! We are locals ,recently had dinner, and it was anything but a good experience. It started with our server, who honestly seemed to want to be anywhere else but serving us. She seemed annoyed about everything and actually said when we said oh we remember you " I'm always here" and at 60 something years old she might want to chose a new profession. Know we've had her before and she depicts unprofessionalism. I won't post her name.. It took 20 minutes to get drinks, had a tasteless salad, cracker crust poorly prepared pizza -$23 for 2? Our brisket as stated on the menu? no- it was actually overcooked 3 pieces of short rib with no sauce( $40 meant to be shared?? . what a joke. My wife and I love Leslie at the wineshop but the restaurant is horrible. I'd stay away until they get better! read more

This is one of the best restaurants in Ludlow. It is so cozy and inviting and has a great friendly vibe. Everyone that works at Stemwinders is helpful and friendly. I started with a "War Dance" cocktail. I had to have it because War Dance is my favorite run at Okemo. It was a bourbon drink with orange lime and simple syrup with bitters and cinnamon. It was sweet, sour and delicious. This is a wine bar but the bartenders are amazing at concocting tasty drinks. BTY, the restaurant is connect to a wine and cheese shop that is amazing. We had a very fresh salad with pickled onions, feta, pepitoes and blood oranges. It was so light and crunchy. I had ravioli that were not like any I ever had before. It was an Italian and Mexican blend. Black bean Ravioli . Very good. We also had some of the best chicken wings. Very well seasoned and deliciously cooked. Not over done. UPDATE: Again we have returned the culinary heaven that is Stemwinder and could not have been more thrilled! I felt I needed to update my review of two years ago, and while the raw-ness of the decor, the warm hospitality of the staff and the cordial crowd has not changed- the menu has only gotten more spectacular! Again we started with the summer beet, peach and feta local mixed green salad that only tantalized our tastebuds for the out of this world "pizza" which by no means resembled any other American pizza I've every had. This was like I was back in Lake Como, Italy with the freshest of ingredients and the lightest crust! We then delved into our outstanding entrees of the undone roasted pork shoulder "taco" on a homemade corn cake and the summer pasta with mafalda pasta, fresh corn, VT pesto and feta cheese with garlic- there are no words. Wendy used to run a great restaurant, but not anymore. The service was horrible and inept. It took 30 minutes to get a bowl of soup. It took another 15 for the entrees to arrive (total of 45 minutes from when we ordered). The risotto was a big disappointment and served luke warm. The shrimp with bok choy was tasty, but they had a set the table with dull butter knife which was impossible cut the bok choy with. We had to ask for a steak knife. The prices seemed outlandish for what they served and how it was delivered. Sadly, I doubt I'll be going there again after being a pretty frequent customer over the years - during ski season. read more

This place is awesome! We loved it. Came here for dinner after a winter day on the mountain. The place has great ambiance, and the wait staff was super friendly. We sat on the second floor which feels very lodge/cabin-like. The food was delicious: we ordered the mixed green salad with watermelon radish, a thin crust pizza with spicy spinach, and the rolled pork and beef brasciole. Everything was so tasty, including the wine. They have a very nice selection of glasses of wine and options that pair well with their menu items. Nice spot. Busy on a Friday night and loud but the food was very good, as was the service at the bar. We had a couple flat breads, mussels and a roasted beet dish and enjoyed them all very much. With a co-owner operating The Wine & Cheese Depot next door, it is no surprise that their wine selection is well chosen. Start with a glass of Colossal Reserva, a Syrah blend from Portugal, a deep ripe red with fruity aromas and a remarkably smooth finish. Vermont restaurants have always been big on showcasing their local produce. Likewise Stemwinder who also makes a point of acknowledging their suppliers on its menu. The regular menu, whilst not extensive, is supplemented by a list of specials handwritten on a roll of paper pinned against the wall. Its offerings could work as individual portions or shared communal style. Our party ordered the following to share: "Bring On The Citrus" - a fresh and wholesome mixed green salad. Blood oranges, grapefruit, and a lime zest infused honey vinaigrette gave the salad a distinctive zing while the sliced red onions, pomengrate seeds and feta cheese added color and layers of texture. Cheese and Meat Board featured Vermont cheeses, charcuterie, bread, olives, pickles and house made jam. A choice selection in terms of quality and variety. Additionally, warm crusty seeded bread slices counterbalanced superbly with the savory piquancy of the salami and cheeses. Boiled Cider Sriracha Wings were delish -perfectly grilled, sticky and sweet, with just a hint of heat. Farmer's Choice Thin Crust Pizza - incredibly crispy thin crust played host to a flavorful spread of chorizo, chicken, mozzarella, BBQ sauce, caramelised garlic and onion plus an added touch of Plymouth Original. Absolutely scrumptious! Seasonal Treat Thin Crust Pizza with toppings of fig jam, feta, mozzarella, bacon and herbs was equally tasty. For dessert, we had the Flourless Chocolate Cake, Mashed Up Chocolate Bark and the Homemade Ice Cream. They were competent but did not leave lasting impressions. Although we did not have a reservation on a Saturday night during peak ski season, they did their very best to accommodate us and we ended up getting a table once we came around 8:30. I can't say enough about the wait staff; everyone from the waiters and waitresses to the hostesses were all extremely friendly and willing to help us. The food was awesome too. Their menu changes from time to time, we we had the halibut, mussels, and brisket with a flourless chocolate cake for desert. Everything was great. Cozy and romantic! The perfect place to warm up on a frigid January night. My boyfriend and I split the meat and cheese board, which was delicious. It also came with pickled vegetables and a crunchy, seedy bread. Highly recommended! We both had entrees that were on the specials board. What a wonderful discovery!! My brother recommended this place when he knew I was headed up to Vermont. I drove an extra 40 minutes to try this restaurant out because of his recommendation. Upon arrival I was very sweetly greeted by three different members of the restaurant which is surprising because the place was packed and they still took time out to say hello to me. The place is absolutely adorable and full of fun locals. The restaurant is located behind the cheese shop and unless you really know to look for it, you would not know that it even exists. One of the owners, Leslie was so sweet and kind because I did not have a reservation yet she was able to fit me in. I ordered the bone marrow "Canoe" with scallop ceviche and red hen bread. What an interesting combination. I was blown away by the combination of flavors. I ordered a glass-of prosecco but found that it was too sweet for the dish. The ceviche was served with cilantro and tomatoes like a true ceviche should be. I believe bone marrow is an acquired taste which I definitely have. The other lady by the name of Leslie who runs the wine shop and is the buyer for the shop recommended I try Rosso di Moltalcino which was a perfect pairing. I was so very impressed with her knowledge. The bread had seeds toasted on the edge which added a wonderful blend of nuttiness to the marrow's deep animal flavors. I ordered the sliders. The delicious Ephesian mountain beef and short rib meat was moist and delicious and served with homemade ketchup, pickled vegetables and onion jam. Absolutely wonderful. Its classy and its got a bit of the hip vibe. Go there for wine and have a some appetizers. I guarantee that will be a good night. They have a large selection of wine and cheese (these also can be purchased in the front of the restaurant where there's a store). The staff have a great knowledge of wine, but aren't somms. However, they do have a good knowledge of drink and food pairings. Food is good, but you're best off getting a bottle of wine or two and a cheese platter.
