This was my first trip to Vermont. My daughter and I got to our bed-and-breakfast a little late and needed to get a bite to eat, and this place was recommended by our host. The owners, Donna and her husband were the ones working it. I felt like I had stumbled into a Hallmark movie. Be careful this hidden gem is off VT Route 103 southbound side, while the gps notes the resteraunt is in Shrewsbury, VT (Cuttingsville is closer). Blink and you may miss it. Offering daily and a full menu, the Rustic Rooster has plenty to choose from. I decided on picking a cup of the potato and bacon soup appetizer and Asian wrap from the specials menu. Both were very good. On tap, the Rustic Rooster had a decent beer selection. The seasonal draft was a stout, I'm not a fan so I chose the Catamount IPA which was ok. The wooden interior, vaulted ceilings, attractive decor, and verdant views just outside the windows create an almost romantic experience, even in the presence of town residents' lively reactions to whatever sporting event plays behind the bar. The apple brie burger--a special that should be a permanent menu fixture--is superior to any burger encountered in life so far, cooked to perfection and served between a light and airy bun that leaves you energized instead of needing a nap. In a wholesome display of small-town values, the owner (or at least a guy who presented like the owner) ran outside to return my forgotten credit card. Went to eat here while out for a drive on Sunday. Heard nothing but good things about it. Wife and I stopped for lunch. She got the spinach artichoke dip I got the French onion soup. My wife makes her own dip so she's very particular in what she wants. She said this was the best one she's ever had. I agreed very tasty and creamy. French onion soup was good needed a little more cheese on the top in my opinion. For our main meal I ordered a meatball sub with fries. Pretty tasty, homemade meatballs on a ciabatta bread. I should have asked for some sauce on the side but overall pretty good. Fries were tasty. Wife got a chicken sandwich with onion rings. Onion rings were spot on chicken sandwich was a little thin. Waitstaff was friendly and attentive but not all over ya. They were perfect. Definitely would go back to try a few more things. There is a very nice bar there too. read more

Where does one begin about the rustic rooster.. Food: phenomenal. I'm annoyed that I split with my friend cause I probably could've eaten 4 plates to myself. The burgers were perfect and although I don't like bone-in wings, the dry rub on them was great. The French toast sticks stole the show for me (meal wise, I'll get to dessert in a bit) and this place has perfected the potato. Tator tots? Yes. Sweet potato fries? Mhm. Truffle fries? Oooo yeah. Drink: we each got coffee, nothing crazy. But holly, our incredible server, kept them coming and it was actually a really great cup of coffee. (*note* They don't have non-dairy milk) Place itself: such a home-like local feel. The staff is so friendly it's contagious. No matter what mood you're in you'll leave this place in a great one. Although it was chilly inside (expected, its Vermont in the winter), the place has a warm feel and comfortable seating. Dessert: props to holly for making sure we got the cookie sandwich, because it finalized my decision for me. This restaurant is located at a very remote and internet here is a challenge so once we got here we were not happy to find that since they are one of the many few restaurants in the area they were booked. I was not please not for that but for the fact that it seemed like the wait staff didn't even reply took the time to try and accommodate they just turned us away and that showed that they did not want to make any effort to have us stay, so we went elsewhere and ate at an amazing place called, Victorian Inn At Wallingford The only reason this particular restaurant has a high rating is that they have a very low amount of reviews so do not get fooled by the amount of stars they have. go to that restaurant yelp page so you can see my review. dont waste your time at this place. read more

"I don't need to move the tables back together and I don't need to tell you why!" None of the restaurants in Ludlow took reservations and I was afraid we'd have trouble getting seated. This place is between Ludlow and Rutland and is worth the 20 mon drive from Ludlow. The rustic rooster struck my eye on yelp, visiting my boyfriends family in Mount Holly, as it called itself a wine bar. Coming from California, I was intrigued and honestly had low expectations. The charming and rustic space brought great flavors and excellent customer service on a what proved to be packed evening and had customers waiting for tables during our whole meal. We ate at the bar and I requested a wine menu upon sitting. They had a reasonable selection and I was pleased to be able to order by the bottle. They had a couple malbecs, our favorite, and were reasonably priced! We opted for appetizers as we had a late lunch and ordered dry rub wings and nachos with pulled pork. The wings were well seasoned and cooked perfect and my nachos were enough for 3 people! The best part was the pulled pork that melted in your mouth and had a sweet and tangy sauce! Next time I will order as much of the pork as I can! The only fault here is lack of space, as it was crowded and the people stood behind me the entire time. I would have liked to stay longer, but felt compelled to give up my seat to hungry patrons. It's nice that locals frequent here as my boyfriend was able to chat and hear about what's changed since he left. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to returning! read more
