A shell of its former glory. I grew up hearing my parents rave about this place, they were nearly regulars a few years ago at their old location. I tried my brothers steak and we both agreed it was the most unique tasting steak we'd ever had in a bad way. My mom ordered a dish that came with rice and it seemed as if it was a type of quick/instant rice and her meal wasn't enjoyable. She said the quality went downhill from previous years. I ordered the duck, and I could hardly cut it, it wasn't tender, it was extremely chewy and the flavor was almost tasteless and what I could taste wasn't good. The sides were better than the duck sadly. My little brothers got burgers and fries and I will say the fries easily best the rest of the food with their salt and skins still on. The prices are steep and are comparable to other "fancy" middle tier restaurants, another side note all of our dishes for 6 people came out within 10 minutes which says something. Roots in Rutland really stood out, restaurant is simple but elegant. We started with the eggplant chips, which were perfectly crisp and packed with flavor. For mains, we had the ravioli and tofu, both were incredibly hearty and fresh, with a thoughtful balance of textures and flavors that made each bite satisfying. The non-alcoholic berry sangria was refreshing and well balanced, and the chocolate mousse was a great finish, rich, smooth, and just indulgent enough. The place is gorgeous! I loved the look. The staff were helpful and easy to talk to. The only thing missing in our meal was seasoning. We started strong with the Brussel sprouts, I recommend asking for the aioli on the side. I don't think they need it and it was overpowering. We had the roast corn and chips. This was everyone's favorite but 2 out of 3 of us thought it would be better warm. Wine, cocktail and beer lists all looked good. It was lunch so we ordered salads. They were all extremely bland. I had the beet salad and my friend has the grilled chicken Caesar. The chicken ceasar was good but the chicken was dry and needed seasoning. The beet salad has no flavor and no texture. It could do with a nut topping maybe and a heavier sauce to stand up to the beets. read more

We didn't want steaks or burgers so there weren't too many choices in Rutland. Roots is farm to table so it seemed like a good fit. We shared the kale salad. The dressing (champagne vinaigrette) was a bit acidic for us given the tanginess of the kale. We made sure to grab a piece of apple or cranberry with each bite to offset the dressing. I had the ravioli which was listed as corn and ricotta. The filling was just the cheese, the corn in the tomato-y sauce. She had the mussel app as her entree and it came in the same sauce as my ravioli. The toasted bread was charred but lacked something to make it tastier (it tasted just a little burnt). Sat at the bar and service was solid. Odd entrance location for out of towners. read more

I ordered the beet salad on 4/6/26. It was terrible. The beets did not have any flavor. The arugula and whatever was on top was bitter and very spicy. And whatever the white blob of stuff on the plate was flavorless also. read more

It was a little hard to find this place because it's tucked around the back of the building. It's got a really nice courtyard and I would love to get back there in the summer to sit outside. We visited just to have a drink and a snack at the bar this time. They had a small tap list, but the beers they had on tap were good choices. Excellent service and outstanding food. Both the roast pork and the salmon entrees were large-portioned, and well-seasoned. Local red ale draft was perfect with the autumnal seasonings on the pork. Only slight drawback is that a larger sign on the sidewalk is needed at the entrance as the restauant is not seen from the street and even the GPS becomes confused. You might need a reservation to eat here. We went on a rainy Wednesday night and were lucky to be seated at the bar because we didn't have reservations. Clean and swanky, we were impressed with the menu. My husband had the roasted Brussels sprouts, then the quinoa salad. I had the Korean BBQ tofu. All three dishes had so much flavor. Just simply delicious. Perfect for a date night/special occasion meal. It's a bit tricky to park and get to the restaurant. But it's in a nice, quiet park. The building boasts two of the large murals that are part of the mural trail. There are also some nice sculptures. read more

Upscale and fancy restaurant with a lot of seating space. We ate here twice in a row on our trip to vermont coz we loved it here that much. Pretty upscale and still welcomingly kid friendly. Everything I had was super delicious. Soup, salad and mains. Their menu is likited and they a pre-fix menu go for anything on the menu blindly and you wont be disappointed. The food was absolutely amazing! We were here last year and decided to go again. I started with the cheese fondue with grilled pita bread and apple slices. It was so good! I then had the pear salad with grilled chicken. The salad was lightly dressed with a maple vinaigrette. The chicken was very flavorful and perfectly grilled. Finished with a maple flavored crème brûlée which was delectable. My husband had the hamburger, which was made with locally sourced beef, and he thought it was one of the most incredible burgers that he had ever had. He chose the house made chips for his side. My husband and I have been coming to this restaurant for over nine years! I figured it was time to upgrade my review. A few years ago they moved to a larger location on Washington Street. It's a great spot and it's nice that the tables and seats are on top of each other as it's helpful during these Covid times. Definitely make a reservation, but usually they're not too busy unless there's a show or event in town. The staff is lovely as always. And the food is delicious. We ate here on New Year's and after reading my old review, I realized that I actually had the same dish - tofu with rice noodles. But the 2021 version had a glow up. It had great spices and flavor, and the noodles had a good chew to them and the radish added great color. We shared a vanilla crème brûlée for dessert which was a nice treat as my husband doesn't usually like to get the crème brûlée. Roots is definitely our favorite restaurant in Vermont and highly recommend eating here! read more

It's not every day that you accidentally find a gem like Roots. Cozy vibe and incredible service. You can tell the ingredients are freshly sourced from Vermont and the flavors are incredible, like a warm squeeze on your palate. Our first dinner in Vermont, and it was excellent! We were seated outside under a large tent on a beautiful evening, and were entertained by a live musician who was quite good. A variety of 60s-90s tunes. We ordered cocktails, and my wife had a glass of the house Pinot Grigio with her dinner. We ordered a variety of foods to share from our server who was always there when we needed him. The pork belly (which was the best we've ever had!), the scallop salad (just right as an appetizer), and the braised pork entree (which was so huge, we took some home for lunch the next day). Best meal I've had in a long time and by far away best I've had in Vermont! The brussel sprouts were phenomenal.

I was pretty impressed with this place. The ambience is nice. The service was great. The food was great . I think it really just depends what you get. You might have to be specific with what you like. I got the tomato basil soup, which was fantastic and the butternut squash soup which was loaded with black pepper. I got the pear and frisée salad that was really good. We got the special whiskey steak that was on special. I'm not sure why they put beans on it. The meat was fantastic. It didn't need the beans We got some carrots on the plate that weren't done. I like the roasting potatoes too.... We got the ancho ribeye that was also cooked very well. I'm not sure why they gave us ranch, though Man was serving us was very attentive. And so were the busboys. I would probably go back not bad read more

Checked out Yelp and found this place while visiting in the area. Tried making a reservation on Open Table, but no times were available that we could go, so we took our chances. We walked in and was quickly greeted. He asked if we had a reservation, although we didn't, he offered for us to sit at the bar. Which was great. We were quickly greeted by Shannon at the bar. She was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. We ordered drinks and the zucchini fries appetizer. The were SOOOO good and I loved the horseradish Mayo dipping sauce. I ordered the mushroom sandwich with fries and my husband ordered the Caesar salad with grilled chicken. I had a few bites. It was very good, but I was stuffed from the zucchini fries and drink. I do wish there was actually more than 3 slices of mushroom and less onion. But that's my fault for not requesting. We would absolutely go back if back in the area. read more

New favorite Rutland restaurant. I was not feeling well (aka hung over) when we came on Saturday for lunch and this place helped me get right with myself again. First, the price here is a bit higher than nearby restaurants but it was well worth the money. I ordered their sweet potato soup after being recommended it and honestly I haven't stopped thinking about this soup since. It was so warm and just a little bowl of happiness. I ordered the pork with the johnny cakes and was surprised at how much meat this dish came with. The pork was probably the most tender pork I've had in a very long time and I also can't recommend this dish enough. I tried my boyfriend's ribeye, and while it was good, it wasn't something I would get or recommend for this restaurant. Mainly because I'm from Texas and can get a good steak pretty easily but also felt it was very under seasoned. But loved the pork and the soup and I look forward to coming back for these two items! read more

We started with a fabulous fondue made with local cheeses and honey with bread and green apples for dipping. I also had the summer sangria...refreshing. For dinner we had the pulled pork with blueberry bbq sauce and slaw...I wouldn't normally like Cole slaw, but this was fresh and an excellent pairing. My husband said the same about his peach glazed salmon...he normally dislikes sweet potatoes, but altogether they made the perfect bit. Limited menu but for the most part executed very well. We went at a weird time and it was empty. Not very familiar with Rutland but I think this may be an outlier of a restaurant, most other places seem to be chains. Started with the cheese fondue it was served in a skillet with apples and soft pita bread, it was very good but needed to be served with way more bread and apples. We also had the pork sandwich and entrée and they were fantastic. The tofu entrée was good but the flavor could be boosted a bit, noodles and tofu really mellow out flavors so any dish with them needs to be heavily seasoned, maybe some Thai chili paste? We also had the beet salad and the cheese was great and it was all in all surprisingly filling but the beets flavor were a bit basic, could also be a bit more seasoned. read more
