I absolutely love this restaurant in terms of what we get for the price! It's one of those restaurants that makes you feel good because it doesn't feel like they're trying to skimp or cheat you out of a meal. The portions are absolutely HUGE and they're fantastic in taste! We got the chili cheese fries, which is enough to feed half a country with enough leftovers to feed them for an entire week straight. Don't worry- there are very nice to-go boxes for you to use if you can't finish everything. Everything (especially the sauces, which I LOVE) is very clean, neat, and organized. I especially appreciate the fact that they also provide you with free plates, which are really convenient if you're sharing their huge portions. I have never had bad customer service here and I come here often. I went through the drive thru and asked a simple question if there was the same ingredients in the hamburger as the cheeseburger. I hear someone respond back to me with "obviously." I was so shocked about how rude that response was and asked the guy at the window if he responded to me with obviously. He told me he didn't say it his manager did. I was even more stunned that a manager would have such a response to a simple question especially since it was a simple question and yes it may be obvious but obviously it was not to me since I obviously asked the question. If you look at the picture it's obvious there is no consistency in their beef dip sandwiches. I ordered 2 one for me and one for my pops. Got one loaded with meat on extremely soggy bread and the other with a little meat but at least you could pick it up and eat it. The good thing about this place is that it is clean and is easily accessible. However I ordered a tuna sandwich and it was uncommonly dry plus they did not really put it on the bread that I wanted it which would have been wheat. They had a turkey burger on the menu even though they do not have any turkey to make the burger. They would not give us a tray by which to eat on instead they gave us these paper plates which I found to be highly disrespectful. Pastrami is my favorite delicatessen meat out there. The way pastrami is cured in brine...the different spices that are soaked and delved into a piece of pastrami, (garlic, black pepper, coriander, paprika, cloves, and mustard seed) There's only one word to describe it correctly: MmMMMmMMmmMMmmmmMmmMMm! So you can imagine my enthusiasm when I made my first trip out to The Hat, which boasts of having the worlds best pastrami. After I ate here and left the Hat, would i agree with that slogan? Most definitely. Since, I'm a burger fanatic, I ordered the Pastrami Burger and fries. Vicki V ordered the Roast Beef and dip. I don't know if my hunger was making me go crazy, but i swear the burger growled at me when i held it. It was monstrougly-HUGE! As for the taste? It was exquisite. The pastrami burger was served on a french roll that was slathered with mustard at the inside of both rolls. The patty was succulent and well done. Lettuce and tomatoes were fresh, pickles added crunchy texture, and only enhanced the delicious salty flavor of the meat. And the pastrami itself?...incredible. The pastrami was pinker and tastier than any pastrami I have ever eaten. The spice rub seems thicker, more dominated by mustard seed. What makes it special is that most pastrami places cook their meat incorrectly, so the result would be a rubbery, hard-to-tear-pastrami. Not at this place. The Hat manages to cook it perfectly so every bite into the patty burger would easily get a bite of the pastrami. I had a bite of Vicki V.'s roast beef dip and it was decent. I actually think Arby's does a better job of that, but Pastrami is what the Hat is known for, so make sure to get the pastrami! If this place wasn't so darn far away from my house, I'd go here every week. One thing's for sure, I'll be coming back! ------------ Extra Notes: -I loved how they double bag everything at this place. Why must the pastrami be so good, yet so bad for you?!! Typical fast food restaurant, you order, pay, and pick up your food at the end of the counter. Lines can be long, but don't under estimate them they move fast. Wait for your food might be long at times, so be patient. My boyfriend and I usually order the pastrami burger and fries, that's enough for both of us to share. When you say small fries, it means ginormous fries that feed four people lol I always tell them a little, I don't mind paying regular price, I just hate throwing them away. I agonized over my rating because I have some great memories of eating here over the years. Unfortunately, while it once would have garnered 4 or 5 stars, two things have changed very much for the worse. First, at all of The Hat locations, the food has been on a slow decline. I've never ordered anything other than the pastrami dip and chili fries, everything else has always been totally meh. Even those two standouts, however, are not as good as they used to be. This has coincided with a long, slow climb in prices such that the value proposition is now quite bad. Second, at the Upland location there is a complete disregard for their customers. I had a double-charge on my credit card which I unfortunately didn't catch until after the window during which I could just call and have it reversed. My bad, I know, you have to keep up with these things. That said, it was what happened next that blew me away. My credit card company called The Hat with me on the line to ask them nicely if the restaurant would credit my card for the extra charge. The customer service rep told me that most businesses will agree that two identical charges a minute apart are a screw up and will refund one of the charges voluntarily. The manager at The Hat in Upland started yelling at the credit card rep, saying there wasn't anything he could do about it. I mean, he was seriously abusive to the point that I cut in and tried talking him down. He blamed everything on the credit card company and said that he was sorry I got screwed but there wasn't anything he could do. Um... hello? You got paid twice for my lunch. I got charged twice. The CC company doesn't have my money, you do. So he starts yelling again, this time at me. I won't return. Anybody who yells at a customer who is just trying to get things made right after a mistake doesn't deserve my business. read more
