I have been going to The Hat for years for the Pastrami sandwich's. The service at this location SUCKS . They do not know know what customer service is. I ordered over $50 of food. 4 pastrami sandwich's and an order of chili cheese fry's. I asked for yellow peppers. They gave me 2 small bags with 3 peppers in each. I politely asked for any for one more and was told no they could only give two per person. I asked the manager she rude ( over peppers) and refused. I explained to her that the orders were going to 3 different locations. Still a no, offered to pay for the extra bag still no. To The Hat on Central, please work on your customer service. read more

I've been going to The Hat for a few years now and they don't disappoint. This is one of their bigger locations, with a big dinning area, a drive thru, and private parking lot. The portions are very generous especially with fries or onion rings, they'll fill half a bag or give you a big tray of 'em. You can get burgers, pastrami, hot dogs, tuna sandwiches, and chili. This is the 2nd time I went there, was craving pastrami, the first time we went was through the drive thru late at night so we decided to try it during indoor dining. There was appropriate social distancing measures with the booths. Everyone wore their mask properly. One star for that. The pastrami sandwich and pastrami fries were not impressive. This was my first time trying The Hat. I used the drive through service and the associate who helped me was very polite and efficient. I tried the chili cheese dog, pastrami sandwich, chili cheese fries, and regular fries. Don't worry I didn't eat all this by myself. Food was super tasty!! Chili didn't just taste like a big mush, but actually had great flavor and texture. Fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned. Pastrami was amazing. Everything was ooooyeee gooyeee with cheese. The portions are crazy huge. We couldn't finish half of the food and I felt horrible wasting it. Each item was probably 1000+ calories. My body and brain both shut down after eating my lunch and I took a long nap on the couch like a baby. I'm not a healthy eater by any means at all (unfortunately), but just to make sure I don't die of a heart attack induced by monstrously huge calorie laden lunches, I don't think I could have The Hat more than twice a year. I have been going to the Hat in Upland since they opened this location years ago. The pastrami sandwiches have always been stuffed with pastrami. I don't mind spending $12.00 a sandwich when you get that much pastrami. To night, we got two sandwiches and there was not enough meat in both of them to make one good sandwich. I haven't set foot in The Hat in about 15 years. On a very brief visit to Southern Cal it was on my list of places to relive my glorious and somewhat shady past. With very good friend in tow we ventured to this iconic place. On pulling in the driveway I was struck by the fact that this place has not changed one molecule from the outside, and that wonder stayed with me when we walked in the restaurant. It was like I never left! Well, the prices sure did change, but that is more about economics than nostalgia. Money is no object when chasing your youth. I ordered the Pastrami, I had to, they're burger is good as I remember, but I was here for the pure pastrami experience. We ordered one chili-cheese fry because it is freaking huge, and so are we, but in the end there was still some left over! That is saying something! The pastrami was wonderful, it was perfect and it did not disappoint. My only beef (pun intended) with this place is the same with most places, tons of soda spigots and only one diet option. As I sat there and ate and talked to my friend of 41 years it was like time stood still and nothing changed. For that I am grateful to The Hat, if it works, do not fix it. read more

Heard about "The Hat" from Yelper extraordinaire, Michelangelo S, who claimed they had the best pastrami around. He was not lying! As luck would have it, we happened to pass by The Hat while getting re-routed by Google. We pulled into the drive-thru and got the chili cheese fries and the pastrami dip sandwich. Staff was friendly, patient, and polite (reminded me of In N Out workers) and our food was ready in just a few minutes. Now...onto this amazing food... The chili cheese fries are a huge portion (enough for 2-4 people), and they are quite generous with the chili and the cheese. You can even get them topped with pastrami, tomatoes, and pickles, but we stuck with the original. The fries were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft in the middle, the no-bean chili was delicious just like Tommy's (or Willie's in Sac), and lots of melted cheddar cheese on top. The pastrami was served on a fresh, soft white roll with mustard and pickles only. The sandwich was packed with tender, thinly shaved pastrami that wasn't overly salty. Honestly, I never order pastrami sandwiches, but when you're at The Hat, you have to get it! Our total cost was about $20, which didn't include drinks, but trust me, it's a lot of food, and worth every penny. I dream of the day when The Hat will make it's way up north to Sacramento. I haven't been in a really long time and I remember the hot dogs being way bigger. I live 2 minutes from here and got home to a grease soaked plain hot dog bun that completely fell apart. So I paid $4 for just hot dog meat!? I guess if you're ordering things plain here it's not worth it. If you haven't been to The Hat let me just tell you the sign out front doesn't say "World Famous Pastramis" for nothing! They make the best pastramis you will ever have. The pastrami is shaved to just the right size, not too thin or thick. You can ask for the buns to be dipped, but they are delicious with or without it. While you're at it you should try their chili bean french fries, so yummy. I would also recommend the fried onion rings. Drive-thru or takeout The Hat has perfect pastrami's and so much more. The Hat is a southern California chain (~10 locations) that is primarily a purveyor of pastrami. We visited the Upland store because it is a short block off of Route 66 (W. Foothill Blvd) there and was recommended in a YouTube guide. And also because pastrami! There are other things on the menu, but The Hat claims "World Famous Pastrami" so we got the Pastrami Dip. It came on a hoagie roll with LOTS of pastrami and some pickles. Pastrami was really good and the pickles were a nice touch of acid. The service is meh, neither good nor bad. It's an "efficiency" thing: you order at a counter, get a number to put on your table, and then someone brings your food. This is an "eating" experience, not a "dining" one. Spontaneous late night Hat runs are the best. Pastrami dip is fantastic and never fails. Last trip, I finally tried the grilled cheese, and it's my new favorite; has a great cheese stretch. Wet Fries are a staple and a single order can be shared with at least four people; they just pile those fries on a tray. Added bonus, since both of the poutine places I'd normally go to have closed recently, Wet Fries are a good alternative (Though it's missing cheese curds). Something about the gravy that just works with fries. Orange Bang drink is lovely and worth trying at least once. I haven't tried ordering online yet, but it's nice they have the option.
