Melvin's Dojo suffers from the same thing that a lot of fusion restaurants suffer from, which is that when you try and do a bunch of things at once, you don't really succeed at any of them. Granted, this place is clearly a brewery and bar and may do a better job of that than its restaurant side, but we came for dinner so that's what this rating is based off of. The food was fine, but their more fusion-y items were definitely worse than their stuff that was just Mexican or just Asian. Chips and guac (which comes with salsa) was pretty good. The guac was great, actually. Their smoky red salsa kept me coming back, and their green one is refreshing but very watery and difficult to actually pick up with a chip. The sunomono salad was a big hit, although the portion was way small. The pork chashu bowl tasted alright, but to include only two tiny slices of chashu (which weirdly seemed fried) in a $19 rice bowl in which the other components cannot possibly cost that much feels like highway robbery. The cauliflower tacos were drowning in pickle brine. The pork buns were alright--the actual pork was tender and juicy, but flavor was lacking in complexity in the overall bun. Overall, the fusion items fell short. Service was nice and friendly but a bit on the slow side. The ambiance is interesting...music is way loud, and they constantly play kung fu movies. I can't tell if it's supposed to be funny that they only play kung fu movies that most Asian people would consider offensive in their use of yellowface and exaggerated stereotypes. Even so, I wouldn't know who at this restaurant could appropriately make that joke, since there didn't seem to be a single Asian person working there. Kung fu is Chinese, and the word dojo is Japanese, they have all different types of Asian influence in the menu, and I really can't tell what the thesis is here at all. It seems like they started as a brewery and then expanded to food. That's great, and I can applaud the ambition in wanting to not just do "standard bar food", but it would have been better if they just picked one cuisine and stuck to it. Leave the fusion to people who actually have a deep understanding of the cuisines they're fusing. read more

The elk carne asada tacos were amazing! So amazing that we came back the next day for more. They were quite spendy though. $17 for 3 tacos. My husband LOVED the hot sauce and even asked if they sold it. Apparently it's a secret recipe of the chef's. Quick service and plenty of seating. The chicken had more onions in it than chicken and there was no "spicy" to it. Hubs had the Cobb salad. Came with a vinaigrette dressing & Cotija cheese, bacon & tomato. Great place for a post-hike bite! The host graciously let us sit inside with our dog because it was pouring, but they also have dog friendly outdoor seating. You order from a counter and then a waiter brings the food out. Everything was fast and efficient! The beer selection was excellent and we loved the house made IPA's. My husband and I each got different tacos. My favorite was the green chicken chili and his was the Al pastor. We thought the toppings went well but the tortillas themselves were not our favorite. They were a bit mushy instead of crisp. I believe this place just opened so I am sure they are working on it. Whatever you do, be sure to get chips and salsa because the homemade salsa is perfection! Wish I could rave about Code Red, but it was AWFUL. We had the chicken verde burrito and chicken verde rice bowl. Both were very bland. The cotija cheese in the rice bowl was a sauce, which I despise, instead of crumbled cheese. The side salsa with the burrito tasted like cilantro run through a blender. At $15 for a burrito and $20 for a bowl, I expected a lot better than Chipotle, and somehow it was worse. But it was the absolutely gross margaritas that completely ruined the meal. They tasted like straight lime juice. I asked for sugar to try sweeting it up, but that didn't help. And they had this weird almost dirt-like smell. Horrible. Finally asked them to make new drinks, because I thought maybe the bartender forgot the triple sec, because there was zero sweetness. The second batch was better, but again it was still much too sour. All that acid upset my stomach so much, I could hardly eat anything. $75 for 2 people down the drain. Restaurant space is fun, but the dance music was so loud that the cashier couldn't hear my order.
