Since I live nearby, I've dined at The Derby many times over the past decades. I was surprised when I saw I've never reviewed it. It's a classic steakhouse, around since 1922 and once owned by famed jockey George Woolf, with ties to famed racehorse Seabiscuit. I'm not sure if the current building is original, but it looks pretty classic, with brick walls and rooms full of red tufted booths, plus a patio and a popular bar/lounge area that serves the full menu. The Derby is great for a special occasion or a just regular weeknight or weekend meal. We have enjoyed a fine Thanksgiving supper here twice. We most recently came here 3 times in 2 weeks for their Dine LA offer. Their hours have changed over the years; they currently serve dinner 6 nights weekly, lunch on Thurs and Fri and brunch on Sat and Sun. Their menu has also changed over the years; I'd say the current menu has slightly fewer offerings than in the past, but still has great variety. I do miss the Pick-Three and Pick-Six starter options from the past, as well as their carrot cake. I've mostly enjoyed their steaks, but their seafood is good also. I recommend their ribeye, bacon-wrapped filet and prime rib. Love their shrimp cocktail; their cocktail and horseradish sauces pack quite a kick. Most recently, I love their brussels sprouts starter and their Friday soup of the day, New England Clam Chowder. And I ALWAYS get the creamed spinach and creamed corn sides--absolute classics. We did the DineLA lunch most recently, and I thoroughly enjoyed the prime rib French Dip, the Derby burger (with delish candied bacon and crispy onions), and the salmon. Join their VIP Club and you'll get a free Baked Alaska dessert during your birthday month. Service is always excellent and consistent, from the host desk and main waiters to the food servers and busboys. There've long been plans for a reimagining of the restaurant to become part of a mixed-use commercial/residential complex. Supposedly this will start in 2026; the restaurant will be demolished and rebuilt as a larger space. Apparently (and sadly) the restaurant building does not have historic status. I think The Derby will operate in a temporary location during construction. Hopefully the new restaurant's design will retain some classic charm of the original. read more

Higher end steakhouse. Filet Mignon was really good, cooked just right and lots of flavor. The Salmon was okay, not a lot of flavor. It was a birthday dinner, and they recognize you for it. A placard on the table and a big serving of Vanilla ice cream drenched with rum and set in fire. Other desserts were just okay. Bread pudding - just okay. The prime rib is delicious, perfectly seasoned and cooked perfectly (medium rare). Very tender and juicy. Get the 16oz highly recommend, even if you take it home it's still juicy and tender the next day. The ribeye is equally as delicious. Very tender and juicy, flavorful and just melts in your mouth. I highly recommend adding the lobster tail, don't be steered away from the price. We got a huge lobster tail that was tender and fresh. Service is amazing from the front desk to the servers. I made a reservation since it's the dine LA week and there's a special three course menu! - French onion soup: very cheesy (lovely!) and very flavorful! It's a bit salty but the flavors (the caramelized onions, the cheese, and the soup) come together really well with depth in texture and finishes off with an umami aftertaste. - Prime rib with an addition of the pan seared jumbo diver scallop: the scallop is very delicate and seared to perfection- not rubbery at all. With simple seasoning, it truly brings out the seafood flavor! The prime rib is a must! Every bite is so tender and juicy - absolutely perfect! For my side, I opted for veggies - perfectly roasted. - Chocolate cake: rich chocolate! If you like chocolate, can't go wrong with this. Service was amazing! Growing up in the 626 but never would have thought to stumble upon here. We were looking for a nice dinner and this happened to show up on Yelp. Located in Arcadia pretty close to the Racetrack, this feels like a "historic" restaurant that pays tribute to the races to nearby. There was a whole glass wall of the history of the races and all, but I didn't look too closely since we were seated immediately haha. We were initially thinking of sitting indoors but it was already all full at 6pm on a Sunday night. Although, there was plenty of outdoor patio seating that also feels like an extension of the inside. They made a very nice area for the "outside"! Our waiter was quite attentive of us and would check on us frequently. When we weren't ready to order yet, they even offered this garlic cheese toast that was reallllyyyy good. It was melted so nicely, the garlic was so fragrant, it was really delicious. We could eat so many of these lol. So we ordered the three course meal, which was an appetizer, entree, and dessert. For the price of $67 per person, it's very well worth it! I ordered a french onion soup, prime rib, and the cheesecake. My bf ordered the calamari, filet mignon with scallops, and the bread pudding. It didn't take too long for our meal to arrive bc we were too busy eating the garlic cheese toast haha so good! Our appetizers came first, which was the calamari and french onion soup. I never had this type of soup before, so I was really interested in trying. I didn't realize how cheesy it was either! Although, the flavor was generally salty at first, but the more you drink it, it's pretty good! I quite enjoyed it and it made me even so much more full having this and the garlic cheese toast lol. The calamari was also pretty good too, very crispy and the sauces they offered paired with it so well! Then came our entrees. I tried the prime rib first and honestly it's pretty good! Although I would say I had better prime ribs before, but this was already pretty good for the price. It could have been softer and melts more in your mouth, but the quality itself is still pretty nice. i also had this garlic mashed potatoes and wow it's extremely garlic-y. I enjoyed it! My bf also really enjoyed the filet mignon and the fries he ordered. It really made him extremely full cause he was determined to finish it haha. We were stuffed, but we also have dessert next. I had the cheesecake and my bf had the bread pudding. This may be my least favorite portion, the cheesecake was nice at first, but the crust on the bottom is very thin, I wish it had more! The cheesecake itself also didn't feel that smooth, it would clump up the longer it sits. So the consistency wasn't all that smooth and rich as I hoped it to be. It was also very strong in almond flavor. My bf's bread pudding was nice to try, but gets overwhelming the more you eat it. We weren't too into the whiskey syrup, but maybe if we both enjoyed whiskey a lot more, then we would have appreciated it more haha. To sum up, the desserts were just okay, but nice to try. Overall, the meal was very delicious! For the price of this set meal, it's also very well worth what you're getting. Atmosphere, service, quality, and price point were all great. There is valet parking here or you can self-park. The exterior is just as interesting as the inside. It was a nice formal but not overly fancy. Definitely a great place for an anniversary or birthday dinner. That staff are incredibly friendly and attentive. The food arrives at a well paced time. The Derby bread at the start is one of the best I've had at restaurants. Just the right amount of butter and garlic that makes you keep wanting more. It's always nice and toasty. I got the dine LA menu set. The brussel sprouts are really good, slightly crispy. Although this time I wanted to try the Chef Sal's spiced meatballs. I don't normally eat meatballs and this one took away before getting used to the spice combination. It's pretty good. And it wasn't heavy nor a dense ball of meat. The bacon-wrapped filet mignon was good and actually medium rare, compared to other businesses. Our server made sure the steaks were toasty our liking. The bacon was okay. The rice pilaf was good. You definitely get a decent portion. I took my dessert to-go. They made sure I knew the re-heating process. Bread pudding is also delicious. Overall, I really enjoy eating at the Derby each time. I stopped by this place while driving home from work and needed a break from traffic, so I sat in the bar area and ordered a couple different appetizers, which were really good! The Bone Marrow was a larger portion than I would see in most places that I've been too, and the Bacon Wrapped Dates are a given so they were good as well. Came to The Derby in Arcadia excited to try the prime rib. Drove half an hour specifically for it after seeing some pictures and seeing that it was available for Dine LA. Although we had a reservation, we waited for a table about 40 minutes because it was a busy night. Shortly after sitting down, the waiter came around to introduce himself and I ask him if there is any prime rib left; he assures me there is. When he comes back to take our order: he has checked with the kitchen - one is in the oven, but it may take a half hour to come out. Great! We order. Salads and appetizers arrive, and he comes back again with an update: actually the prime rib will be ready in 10 minutes, so it should be perfect timing. Even better! At this point, things start to go awry. Across the room has a very unhappy guest calls the manager over and they argue about something at length. A few minutes after that scene, our waiter comes back to our table and apologies: oh, we actually don't have any prime rib left -- it's too rare and we can't grill it without making it tough, sorry. The staff then bring about something that looks suspiciously like prime rib to the complaining table! So... after telling me multiple times that yes, prime rib is available, yes, it's coming, then yes, it'll be perfect timing -- now it's suddenly "not available." Honestly, it felt pretty obvious they gave the prime rib they'd promised to me to the complaining table . And if that's what happened, fine -- but really, why lie to me as a guest? The waiter then asks if we'd like to cancel our orders, i.e., would we like to leave without having eaten anything but salad? By now, it's 9:30pm, after we came in at 8:00pm; it's late out and the only thing open now is fast food. I stare at the menu and nothing sounds good because I was looking forward to prime rib for hours now. Reluctantly, I ask for the ribeye as a replacement. He comes back after talking to the manager and says there will be a $20 additional charge because it's not on the Dine LA menu. I was shocked, but I agreed because... what else am I supposed to do at that point? The ribeye finally comes out grisly and tough -- not even close to worth the detour, the wait, or the upcharge. My partner's filet mignon also is dried out, obvious that they fired it an hour ago when the prime rib was supposed to come out and left it under a heat lamp to dry out. We paid the bill and still left a tip, but we walked out kind of stunned at how many missteps happened in one dinner. We ended up eating at 10pm after coming in at 8pm and basically wasted our whole night for a subpar meal, been strung along and possibly lied to, and left with a bad taste in our mouths. read more

One of my favorite restaurants, where the food is amazing and the service is incredible. Located near the Santa Anita race track, you are immediately transported surrounded by all the history and memorabilia. The staff goes above and beyond consistently every time to ensure your experience is memorable. The food is amazing down to the very last bite. Starting with the garlic cheese bread, which you must pair with the iceberg salad. It's fresh and every ingredient compliments one another. Super refreshing and I definitely recommend having them chop it up. If you don't know what to order, you can never go wrong with the steak that made the derby famous. The bacon wrapped filet is tender, juicy, and flavorful. I pair it with the garlic mashed potatoes and it comes with carrots and some onion rings. Really fantastic. Now for dessert, I insist on the baked Alaska. Not only is it delicious, but there's a wow factor to it. The top part is like a merengue similar to a s'mores and the bottom is vanilla ice cream. Went here in a big group and the experience was so amazing. The dining area was comfortable and festive, the lighting was warm and easy on the eyes. Everything on the table was clean and well set. It was aesthetically pleasing to look at. The servers were all very attentive and friendly. They did a spectacular job at clearing our table when we were done with appetizers or drinks. And It didn't feel like we had to wait too long for our food despite the number of people in our group. Our server Josh especially made an impression on us, making polite and engaging conversations with our group. The food was great as well. The iceberg wedge lettuce was surprisingly very good and flavorful for a salad. I had their salmon and my partner had the prime rib. Both were cooked perfectly and very flavorful. What a pleasant surprise! We came here for a family dinner after a graduation, and I thought the food was superb. We made reservations for six people on a Sunday evening. We drove up, there was valet parking, got out, went straight inside the restaurant, and our table was about ready. Maybe because we got there a bit on the early side, and it wasn't too crowded. I think the late dinner crowd was still leaving, as the host along with the waiters/waitresses was still preparing for dinner time. I ordered their Prime Rib at Medium-rare plus. Meaning the meat was cooked enough so it's not too red anymore, as in rare, which imo is still bloody. Lol. My garden salad came out with dressing on the side as requested, my baked potato was huge with all the condiments on the side as well. My prime rib was medium-rare plus indeed. The aju sauce was plentiful as the scoop of horse radish on the side looked like whipped cream. It was delicious paired with a glass of cabaret red wine. My family pretty much got the same prime rib order, but prepared differently, anywhere from medium rare to medium well. Timing in preparation of each dish is vital. I'm not a cook or a math genius, but every second does count while steaks are being cooked. Anyhow, all the prime rib steaks came out perfectly to each of our satisfaction. We had a wonderful time. The service was awesome, and our waitress was very attentive. Parking is simple, as it's valet only for a few dollars. The Derby is a stapple in Arcadia and all San Gabriel Valley. It is an old school steak house with red leather booths and horse racing decor. The restaurant was originally owned by a renounced Jockey and the establishment recently celebrated its 102 anniversary. My family and I love this place and visit it often. Although the like the main dinning room and patio, we tend to prefer the bar area where you can enjoy great food as well as deliciously crafted cocktails. Mike is usually our bartender and he always does a fantastic job. Some of our favorites are the fried calamary and the steak wrapped asparagus. For drinks, we recommend their barrel aged Old Fashioned, the Manhattan, the Lemon Drop and the Pomegranate Martini. I just note that drinks are The Derby are all named after famous jockeys. The Derby also hosts special wine paired dinners regularly. We love to attend these types of events and always have a great experience. The Derby is consistent in the quality of food, drinks, and service, and this is something I really value. Steakhouse in Arcadia. Didn't know about it but wanted to go during the last DineLA promotion but couldn't due to other obligations. This time, just the other day in fact, I made it. If you're thinking of going, reservations! Or you can try your luck at the bar or there's the terrace outside. It was pouring rain when I went, so I opted for the bar and lucked out. Not tables available but there were a few open stools at the bar. Meaning, service was awesome. Sarita was my bartender/server. She was attentive, nice and full of information with my questions about the place. She made suggestions and pours a mean drink. Boozy is how I'd describe it and it went with my meal of read meat. Some seafood too. See pics. Food was great too. Beef served as requested. Rare. Opted for the Scampi - a little overdone for my taste but not to the point of chewing on rubber. Chose the Romanoff for one of my sides as well as the bread pudding for dessert. Let's just say I didn't finish it all. Enjoyed it heated up the next day. Have to admit, I was surprised it held up the day after. It's complimentary valet parking. Unless you want to park somewhere close by and walk. Finally made it and I wasn't disappointed. Johnny, our server, provided outstanding service and offered an excellent recommendation for the Ribeye, which my daughter thoroughly enjoyed, noting its tenderness and quality. Her accompanying baked potato with all the trimmings was also highly appreciated. I personally savored the Atlantic Salmon, which was perfectly portioned and expertly seasoned. Ambiance & service was top notch. If you want a low lit place and slightly more classiness, adorn with the derby decorations, you will like this place. Food was upscale with the meats being very tender. We had the LAdine menu and got the following: Salmon Atlantic: It was good, but not amazing. The salmon was a little overcooked. There wasn't any wow factors in the flavor. Green beans were cooked to perfection. (4/5) French Onion Soup: loved that it wasn't too salty (4/5) Prime Rib with mash potatoes: it lacked herbs and the mash potatoes were watery for my taste. However, the prime rib was very tender. (3/5) Alaskan Dessert: loved the meringue and ice cream with the presentation of the flame (4/5) Cheesecake: the best part of the meal! Would go back for this (5/5) Overall, everything tasted more on the bland side, but that is a preference. I can see many people liking it and it is romantic.
