Mash potatoes are good, very garlicy & a little grainy 4 stars - The onion soup was good if you like a strong potent onion flavor! Very brothy & cheesy 4.2 stars - stars Discovered the soup de jour, tomato soup & it was delicious. The Derby has been in Arcadia for over 100 years, so I figured I'd give it a try at least once in my lifetime! It's a dark and dim space- must be a lighting trick. The seats and table settings were clean. Prime Steak Tartare $25 - shallots, dijon, worcestershire sauce, chives, capers, lemon and with focaccia bread. George Woolf's Prime Rib is $58 for 12 oz. ($75 for 16 oz.) and is what you expect, a slow roasted prime rib of beef with au jus and creamed horseradish. I had the Atlantic Salmon $40 - served with beurre blanc sauce, capers, and lemon. This dish is under a sub-menu titled, "Seabiscuit's favorites" - get it!? A menu with a sense of humor. Lamentably, my guest and I have both enjoyed cuts of prime rib, salmon, baked potatoes and garlic cheese bread that have tasted outstanding at other steak houses. I've driven by The Derby countless times and finally decided to give it a try on Valentine's Day for brunch/lunch. The service was great, you're give a cheesy garlic bread to start - pretty tasty. Since we made it for their brunch menu, we decided to give it a try and ordered: Crab cake Benedict 7/10 Steak and eggs 7/10 Fried calamari 6/10 Overall the food was good but didn't sweep me off my feet. Went for late lunch the last day of Dine LA and the place was packed! The ambiance was def cool, but food service was a bit slow. Do not come here if you're hangry or if you're looking to pop in and pop out quickly. That said, we were there to enjoy a leisurely lunch and that's what we got. The dine LA menu was a little bit of something for everyone and I enjoyed the fancier cobb salad. Dine LA also included a starter and I opted for the soup of the day, which was New England clam chowder; creamy but not overly cream tasting with plenty of clams. Someone else in the party ordered the Brussels sprouts and they were delightful, as was the very cheesy French onion soup. We also decided to order a baked Alaska, because why not? Service here is always great, and I have tried so many things at this point that I can confidently say everything has been excellent. The interior has that classic steakhouse feel with the red seating, which I really like. My favorite place to sit is the George Woolf room, especially the booth by the bar. I have had a bunch of appetizers, and the standouts I always recommend are the French onion soup, bone marrow, and beef tartare. The drinks are amazing no matter what you order. I have tried various steaks, including the Mike Smith and the ribeye, and they are both very good, but I always come back to the prime rib. It is my favorite every time. The creamed corn and any of their potato sides complement the steak perfectly. Of course, you have to order some wine as well. I have tried all the desserts and honestly cannot choose a favorite. We had reservations during the most busiest time of year .....Christmas Eve .... Our reservation was at 8:15 upon arrival it seemed that the restaurant had overbooked .... However that wasn't the case , though they were packed , the organized and accommodating staff did an amazing job situating all the reservations. The restaurant will eventually go through renovation which will essentially house more room and dinners but I'm glad we got to see the vintage classical themes before that takes place. The prices were decent and note on the menu they also celebrate New Years at The Derby.... Reservations highly recommended. We sat out in the patio area on a rainy cold night but its heated and very nicely decorated felt like a banquet hall but no matter we were there for the food ! The food was amazing , loved all the dishes ordered .... flavors , spices were right on . Highly recommended the side dish of mushrooms with bourbon and the crème of corn to complement your meal. A nice steak dinner is a great way to start the year, so after a bit of Yelp research, I landed on The Derby! This is a beautiful restaurant, with red leather seats catching my eye immediately. Through the dim lighting, the leftover Christmas decorations were a comforting detail. The drinks were delicious and strong (well, some of them). The Zenyatta and Man O' War were great! However, the Iceman was incredibly difficult to drink. I had to leave half of it behind lol! Little did we know it was opening day at the racetrack so the place was packed. If you're looking for an authentic steakhouse this is your spot. We ordered the Chateaubriand for 2 which was soooooo good. It was also a great experience to see it flambee table side. Really can't explain to you how tender and delicious the center cut filet was. Such a good meal to split. We got the the garlic green beans and the potato's Romanoff (which were delicious twice bake potato's. This spot has been here for years, and my family and I finally got around to trying it. I gotta say, there's a reason why they're still around. Food was delicious! All the various meat cuts I tried from my family's plates were delicious. I'd go for George Woolf's Prime Rib 12 oz - it was melt in your mouth good and well seasoned. As for the sides, the creamed spinach was just okay - maybe will try one of the potatoes next time. For dessert, I got the bread pudding as recommended by the waiter. The restaurant offers complimentary valet parking which I thought was a plus! Our appetizers consisted of the calamari, Cesar salad and the complimentary bread! The bread is addicting and has the perfect texture. The salad was simple but, delicious and the croutons were fresh. I'd come back for just the salad and bread - it's that good! For dinner, I chose the bacon wrapped filet mignon which was paired with mashed potatoes and green beans. My steak was amazing and cooked perfectly. The prime rib is delicious, perfectly seasoned and cooked perfectly (medium rare). Very tender and juicy. Considering how packed and busy they were, I was impressed by their professionalism and friendliness even so late in the evening. Kudos to them! Why would one go to The Derby? Let me count the ways. One... you appreciate old school service - meaning attentive but not over attentive and done with class and a little flair. Two... atmosphere matters... the classic red seating, wood and warm lighting - the horse racing history (being next to Santa Anita Park). Three... of course, the food... not pretentious just premium and delicious. I've been a few times over the last year and each time was a little different, and all fantastic. One for a night out with friends. Another, to take our brother and sister-in-law out as a thank you dinner. And, lastly, for a date night with Gwen. Cute little steakhouse in Arcadia that's been here forever. There's valet available, a bar with Happy Hour, and an outdoor/indoor area that has that ability to host business meetings. So, I unintentionally ate a leftover in the fridge in an unmarked container that I was not suppose to eat! A member of the household left half a potato Romanoff and I gobbled it up. I immediately decided to purchase a side of Potato Romanoff! When I went to order take out over the phone, I misordered the Mashed Potatoes. I had to park on the side of the restaurant. This time, we ordered the rib-eye steak and the $67 special. The special came with different options for salads/soups, sides, main dish, and dessert. Since I live nearby, I've dined at The Derby many times over the past decades. I was surprised when I saw I've never reviewed it. It's a classic steakhouse, around since 1922 and once owned by famed jockey George Woolf, with ties to famed racehorse Seabiscuit. I'm not sure if the current building is original, but it looks pretty classic, with brick walls and rooms full of red tufted booths, plus a patio and a popular bar/lounge area that serves the full menu. The Derby is great for a special occasion or a just regular weeknight or weekend meal. We have enjoyed a fine Thanksgiving supper here twice. We most recently came here 3 times in 2 weeks for their Dine LA offer. Their hours have changed over the years; they currently serve dinner 6 nights weekly, lunch on Thurs and Fri and brunch on Sat and Sun. Their menu has also changed over the years; I'd say the current menu has slightly fewer offerings than in the past, but still has great variety. I do miss the Pick-Three and Pick-Six starter options from the past, as well as their carrot cake. I've mostly enjoyed their steaks, but their seafood is good also. I recommend their ribeye, bacon-wrapped filet and prime rib. Love their shrimp cocktail; their cocktail and horseradish sauces pack quite a kick. Most recently, I love their brussels sprouts starter and their Friday soup of the day, New England Clam Chowder. And I ALWAYS get the creamed spinach and creamed corn sides--absolute classics. We did the DineLA lunch most recently, and I thoroughly enjoyed the prime rib French Dip, the Derby burger (with delish candied bacon and crispy onions), and the salmon. Join their VIP Club and you'll get a free Baked Alaska dessert during your birthday month. Service is always excellent and consistent, from the host desk and main waiters to the food servers and busboys. There've long been plans for a reimagining of the restaurant to become part of a mixed-use commercial/residential complex. Supposedly this will start in 2026; the restaurant will be demolished and rebuilt as a larger space. Apparently (and sadly) the restaurant building does not have historic status. They have memorabilia's from the early days of the Santa Anita tracks and the gear the jockeys used in the 40's and 50's for their horse races. I made a reservation since it's the dine LA week and there's a special three course menu! - French onion soup: very cheesy (lovely!) and very flavorful! It's a bit salty but the flavors (the caramelized onions, the cheese, and the soup) come together really well with depth in texture and finishes off with an umami aftertaste. - Prime rib with an addition of the pan seared jumbo diver scallop: the scallop is very delicate and seared to perfection- not rubbery at all. With simple seasoning, it truly brings out the seafood flavor! The prime rib is a must! Every bite is so tender and juicy - absolutely perfect! For my side, I opted for veggies - perfectly roasted. - Chocolate cake: rich chocolate! If you like chocolate, can't go wrong with this. Service was amazing! Also they have those turning tables so you don't have to squeeze your way into the seats. Big parking lot at the back - valet and self parking available. read more
