We came here around 5:30PM and the traffic to get to Shrimp House was pretty bad. Found out that you can enter from Myrtle and from Live Oak. We were on Myrtle and went onto Live Oak thinking that was the only entrance.. that was a mistake due to the backed up traffic during the time. When we got there, we were seated at a table. It was pretty crowded, full of older people. The guests were friendly and seemed to be regulars of the place. When the waitress came to us, she took our order. We ordered: Popcorn Shrimp - Loved this sooo much! Reminds me of Sizzler. Popcorn shrimp was hot, fresh, and had a crispy batter! The actual popcorn bedding added to the theme :) 9/10 Ceviche - We got the Mexican style and it was good. Not as good at Kickin Shrimp, but it was a good appetizer to start with. 7/10 Clam Chowder - This clam chowder reminds me of Sizzler's clam chowder. It was creamy and thick, and had a few bits of clams. 7/10 Grilled Seafood Sampler - The fish was nice and flaky. Very flavorful with the seasoning that they used. The shrimp was nicely grilled. We were not a fan of the bell pepper that was on the skewer that bled into the shrimp itself. The flavor was a bit intrusive considering shrimp already has a light flavor. Finally the scallops were a pass. Just grilled, nothing amazing. 7/10 overall Shrimp Scampi Linguine - Not sure what the hype was about, but this was the most forgetful dish I had here. The linguini was a bit soft/overcooked, the fettuccini sauce was thick and not too cheesy, but more creamy, if that makes sense, and the shrimp was just shrimp (possibly the grilled shrimp) and was just drowned in the fettuccini sauce and lost any natural flavors it would've had. 3/10 Chocolate Lava Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream: Out of the disappointing Shrimp Scampi Linguini, the Lava cake made up for it. We do not usually get dessert, but we were sure glad we got this. Similar to the pazooki from BJ's, but a hot choco cake instead. Stopped in for the first time for lunch with a friend and sure am glad we did. This place is a classic example of a east coast fish shop. They do it all , fried , grilled , steaks , chicken But we got the classic Chowder , they have both white and red ( New England ) I had a sample plate of fried fish , shrimp, scallops with two sides rice and coleslaw. My friend had the same but grilled. Delicious food with excellent service. It was very busy for a Friday lunch so we sat at the counter and glad we did. The ladies working are extremely friendly and make the whole experience at the Shrimp House that much more enjoyable. Shrimp House (but for me it's always going to be Shrimp Ahoy) has been a long standing institution on the corner of Live Oak and Peck, or Myrtle if you traveling south. I still remember standing in line with my dad to pick up food there as a small child and studying the big fish up on the walls. Times have changed and we have grown but the fried shrimp and cocktail sauce remain perfect. They offer plenty of other wonderful options as well as a cozy atmosphere to dine in. My partner got the Manhattan Chowder and the Surf and Turf (with grilled shrimp and sirloin), baked potato and veggies. Manhattan Clam Chowder - broth was a bit more thick than I'm used to, which I wasn't happy about, but there was a very peppery flavor which my partner and I both enjoyed. I wouldn't get it again because of the thickness of the broth, which I'm assuming was flour or some other thickener. (One reason I prefer Manhattan over Boston chowder is that the Boston uses cream, so it's rich and thick. I prefer the tomato-broth texture and flavor). The Grilled seafood sampler was very good. A nice piece of white fish and a skewer of shrimp and one of scallops. The skewers also had onion and green pepper, which enhanced the flavor. The veggies were well prepared and a good portion. The potato was good too. They did lighten the seasoning on my meal as I requested, which I appreciate. My partner liked the steak and shrimp and their sides also. The staff were friendly and attentive with water glasses and checking in from time to time. The place has a nice menu and the specials sound good. The amazing staff always makes you feel welcome I absolutely love that about the Ladies up front I'm sorry. I didn't get there names. I will and come back and update this review. And we're surprised they changed the fish filets instead of a whole piece of fish they gave us some Gortons round minced fish portion soaked underneath wet with oil this was the middle of the week during lent so I dont know if they ran out of there normal stock or changed owners. We ordered 2 plates of Pirates treasure with a choice of onion rings or fries and a side of manhattan chowder or white clam chowder. Manhattan has a of chile flavor to it. We've been coming to the Shrimp House for many years, and I realized that I've never posted a review! We had not visited for several years, since before the pandemic. Since we were in the area, we decided to go for a late lunch. Well, I'm so happy to report that the food quality, some of the staff, service and everything remains the same. Such an enjoyable experience to be back after such a long time. We ordered our favorite---the fried shrimp with rice pilaf and coleslaw. They are known for their fried shrimp, and it is excellent... "Breaded daily, with our own special recipe, butterflied and golden fried." The red sauce for the shrimp that is on the table is really good, and you can also request tartar sauce. The rice pilaf and coleslaw are absolutely delicious too---they are my favorite accompaniments to the fried shrimp. JJ also loves their clam chowder, and ordered a cup of this as well. This is a family run business, a casual family restaurant with nautical decor, friendly, cheerful ambience and great customer service. JJ always loves to chat with the Owner Nick (when he is available) who is very friendly and personable and takes great pride in his restaurant. They've had great conversations over the years, and JJ has shared with Nick how we used to go to the original Shrimp House in El Monte back in the day. They have really good fried shrimp if you want to try, which is what they are popular for. This place been around for years and popular in San Gabriel Valley. The food is always fresh and they have daily deal combos, which you can't deny. The restaurant is really clean and the service is phenomenal always with the same servers for years. The lunch special occurs Monday to Saturday and prices are very low. I can speak for my own meal which was two fish tacos and they actually were flavorless. My side of steamed vegetables were also mediocre. The other side was clam chowder and that was delicious. Perhaps when one goes to a shrimp house, best to order shrimp! This was the first time me and my man went here for late lunch. First impressions were a little off for me. We were greeted but the staff didn't direct us properly to where we're going to seat. The staff just pointed in a direction and me and my man just walked in that direction and figured where to sit. It was awkward. We have a mix thought regarding the food. I ordered the steak and lobster which is market priced. I had it for $36 as a Sunday special and unfortunately, it wasn't worth it. The size of the lobster was not I was expecting and it was just the tail portion which is small. The lobster tail was not seasoned enough which tasted bland for me even the melted butter didn't help. I asked for a medium rare for my steak but they served me a rare one. When I sliced into the steak the blood like liquid came out from it and I can still see the pink color. It was hard to eat and it was too chewy. I had to excuse myself to the bathroom. I felt like I threw money on the drain. My man ordered the captain special for $20 and it was "ok" which made me wish I ordered that same one. I feel like it's a "hit or miss" for their menu, so I recommend to come here if you have extra money or you're not on a budget because we paid over $116 and I wasn't full and was still hungry. We ended up going to another restaurant that was worth it. On the bright side, I do recommend the coconut shrimp appetizer, the clam chowder was also good. The fried coconut banana was a hit for me for dessert. The view of the restaurant was ok. The seating was a little packed. Also, if you're ever going to use the bathroom just a heads up that the light is on timer, so If you're taking a while try not to panic if the light goes off. The sensor will be near the door so you have to go to it and activate the sensor. I personally would come back for the fried coconut banana split and the coconut shrimp as to go. I rate this place 3/5. Not too amazing but an "ok" experience. Another comment I have regarding the cleanliness of the restaurant. I looked at the edges of the windows and seats and there's dust and you can tell that management doesn't check the cleanliness of the restaurant before they open. This restaurant lacks standards. Basic hygiene standards like this do make me question if the kitchen is clean. I wouldn't take my family here, there was a homeless man with an overwhelming stench who came in and it took time for the staff to handle the situation. Not even sure if a manager was close by.
