The place is a nice restaurant with a huge bar. The service is always great. If you go during happy hour or Sunday brunch, you get a lot of food for cheap too. I tried the western burger, the Swiss burger, chicken and waffles, onion rings, and fries. The burger is one of the best I've had with a grilled brioche bun that is slightly crunchy on the bottom but so spongy and chewy on top. It perfectly complements the perfectly cooked wagyu patty. The chicken and waffles is almost too much to eat in 1 sitting. They also don't drown it in syrup. They drizzle just enough to flavor it but not drown it and make the waffle soggy. A standard, hipster bar with heavy mixologist vibes and decent American food, the State is located on the main Myrtle Street strip in Monrovia that houses all the restaurants and shops. Parking is easy enough a block or so away, but finding a close spot is usually hit or miss on Myrtle due to how many restaurants are concentrated in a five block space. I went alone for a quick lunch. Service was exceptionally friendly and generally attentive, though it was a bit of a drag getting my bill settled as the lone server kept getting distracted by other tables and customers. Well, I got the State burger with no pickles and no thousand island sauce. I added bacon for $2.00 and swapped out the potato chips for fries for $1.50. It's happy hour all day until dinner, so the burger was discounted from $16 to $12, which is a good deal. The burger tasted great. The fries were good. The freshness of the lettuce and tomato on the burger actually stood out. I never realized how often you get slightly wilting lettuce at other places until I bit into this super fresh, crisp lettuce. I know that's a weird thing to mention, but it stood out. The only complaint I actually had was the amount of meat used in the burger patty. I think it's very small. They also sell a double smash burger, and I almost felt like this was a smash burger, cause the patty is so thin. It's not, but it's a disappointingly small amount of meat. Still, if you want drinks, it's a lovely looking bar. As I said, service is great. And I will come back for the burger. It's good and cheap, though I would gladly pay five dollars more for more meat. I visited the State for the first time on 05/01/2026 at lunchtime with a party of three. Parking is easy to find, all around Monrovia downtown. The restaurant was kind of empty during our visit today; however, it is a small place -- and it was kind of nice. Every other time I have passed it (usually in the evening) it is packed. So, it was nice to be quiet today. Our service was friendly. I had the spicy chicken sandwich, which is a huge sandwich and it was delicious. It was not really spicy; however, I know -- for the masses. It was still absolutely delicious though. I did upgrade my salad to the side Cesar salad and it also was delicious. Luckily, someone asked the question on the page and someone from the business responded back with a link. I came back on a "normal" weekday and it wasn't as busy. We came back for their tacos and I noticed that they weren't the same. Each taco Tuesday is different and they do not have the ingredients to make the tacos listed the week prior. Love the variety, but saddened to not be able to have something I truly enjoyed available to order. I've been to the Rancho Cucamonga and Monrovia locations. Both locations have decent parking options, along with good food and drink options. Although the Racho locations is much larger with minimal wait times. The Monrovia location is located on Myrtle in old town Monrovia, it has decent parking options but be mindful of the Friday night market happening on Myrtle between Lemon and Chestnut. This location is smaller and may require a wait to be seated but the service, food and libations are pretty good. The ambiance is on trendy side with a variety of age groups from Boomers to human and fur babies. The outdoor patio allows for dogs on a leash. We started off with drinks, girl next door; vodka, elderflower and blackberries, a mezcal drink which I can't recall but both drinks were good! For starters we ordered the bacon wrapped dates with bleu and mascarpone cheese and tempura green beans. Our entrees for the evening were the poblano burger with side salad and the chicken breast with mushroom risotto and broccolini. The State off Myrtle in Monrovia is a small, cozy spot with a great vibe--especially if you can grab a seat on the outdoor patio. Inside, they have a comfortable full bar that adds to the overall laid-back but elevated feel. We were actually able to walk in and get a table pretty quickly on a Friday night--even with a street fair going on along Myrtle, which was a nice surprise. The area itself is great to walk around before or after your meal, which adds to the overall experience. The food was solid across the board. The cheese plate was delicious and a great starter. The shrimp tacos were tasty, and the mac and cheese with shrimp added was a standout--super rich and satisfying. But the real highlight for me was dessert--the chocolate-filled beignets were so good and definitely a must-order. Drinks were also on point. The espresso martini was strong, smooth, and honestly one of the better ones I've had. Service-wise, the staff was friendly and welcoming, but things did move pretty slow throughout the meal, so just come with a little patience. The power went out for a good while during our visit in December. The street lights stayed on but we could definitely tell with difference when our toasty heaters stopped glowing. " ok, when in the world did she become a cook? This quaint eatery was a homeowner for our lunchtime hunger on Friday. We arrived shortly after opening, around d 11:00am. The ambiance was amazing and well thought out. The service was quick and our server was very attentive as she kept our drinks to the brim and checked in often to ensure we had a pleasant experience. The food. This is where it slaps. We both got the BBQ burger with onion rings and shared an order of poutine. The burger was perfectly cooked to order, medium, with a buttery, toasted brioche bun and smokey bacon...delicious. The onion rings...OMG the onion rings. The batter was so thin and so crispy! I would make the 30 mile trip back just for the onion rings! Do not leave here without trying them! Both dishes were delicious and my boyfriend and I ended up coming back again for a 2nd visit. On our 2nd visit, we ordered the Caesar salad, braised short rib tacos, and mac n cheese. After trying all the food we had here, I recommend their burgers with fries, Caesar salad, and brussels sprouts. Everything else was either ok or the meat was very dry; which I don't recommend the tacos. They have a variety of cocktails that are also great. They've got a full bar with everything you could imagine. The restaurant itself is very nice. There are 3 booths on the side and half booth/half table in the center. You can also sit at the pony bar, actual bar, or outside. Lots of options. We like the side booths or the bar. The staff is super nice and friendly every time we are there. My husband and I usually just walk in and we're able to get a table (around 5-6pm). We've been here a few times and really wanted to like this place. The food and drinks feel more elevated than most spots nearby, and as locals in Monrovia, we were hoping it could become a regular for us. This last visit was frustrating enough that we won't be rushing back. We came in just before 6:00 PM with a babysitter and a limited window. The restaurant wasn't busy, maybe five tables, but service was completely off. Our entrée took about 45 minutes. It was comped, but no one acknowledged the delay. No apology, no explanation, nothing. We also got the wrong side (fries instead of onion rings), and while it was corrected quickly, it added to the overall feeling that no one was really paying attention. The bigger issue was how absent the service felt. Our server never came back for a second round of drinks, and I had to go to the bar myself. When I mentioned it, the response was basically that the server was busy with another table, which felt dismissive given how long we had already been waiting. No one was busy. By the time food arrived, it was around 6:45 PM. The problem wasn't just the wait, it was the lack of communication or basic hospitality the entire time. I actually emailed the restaurant directly after our visit and never heard back, which is disappointing and honestly says a lot. At this point, it's hard not to feel like they just don't really care about the customer experience or about keeping people coming back. We had a large group of 10, and The State in Monrovia absolutely exceeded our expectations. From the moment we arrived, the entire staff was warm, welcoming, and incredibly attentive. Managing a larger party can be challenging, but they handled everything seamlessly with professionalism and genuine friendliness. Every member of the team, from the hosts to the servers and even the bartender, made sure we were taken care of throughout the evening. Drinks were great, service was prompt, and they constantly checked in to make sure everyone was happy. The food was outstanding--fresh, flavorful, and served in a timely manner for such a big group. One of my favorite happy our restaurant in downtown Monrovia. It has an amazing menu with wide window from 11 AM to 6 PM. I am so bummed I just found about this place but now I am sharing it with all my friends and we frequently come here to eat and grab some drinks. The food they prepare is really delicious and it's cooked to your liking. The staff is really kind. They even offer a coloring sheet and crayons to kids and often bring them fruits as well. It's a kid friendly restaurant. I enjoy the ambience. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. There's great parking both in a public parking lot nearby as well as on the street. I hope you come by and check them out. They have a wonderful drink menu that you can choose from and the waiter and waitresses will be happy to recommend one for what you need for that day. read more

We go not just to the Monrovia location but also the one in Rancho Cucamonga, and overall, the experience is usually amazing. The food is consistently great, the atmosphere is lively, and most of the staff truly go above and beyond--especially when accommodating large groups like ours with kids.
