I visited the State for the first time on 05/01/2026 at lunchtime with a party of three. Parking is easy to find, all around Monrovia downtown. The restaurant was kind of empty during our visit today; however, it is a small place -- and it was kind of nice. Every other time I have passed it (usually in the evening) it is packed. So, it was nice to be quiet today. Our service was friendly. I had the spicy chicken sandwich, which is a huge sandwich and it was delicious. It was not really spicy; however, I know -- for the masses. It was still absolutely delicious though. I did upgrade my salad to the side Cesar salad and it also was delicious. We've been here a few times and really wanted to like this place. The food and drinks feel more elevated than most spots nearby, and as locals in Monrovia, we were hoping it could become a regular for us. This last visit was frustrating enough that we won't be rushing back. We came in just before 6:00 PM with a babysitter and a limited window. The restaurant wasn't busy, maybe five tables, but service was completely off. Our entrée took about 45 minutes. It was comped, but no one acknowledged the delay. No apology, no explanation, nothing. We also got the wrong side (fries instead of onion rings), and while it was corrected quickly, it added to the overall feeling that no one was really paying attention. The bigger issue was how absent the service felt. Our server never came back for a second round of drinks, and I had to go to the bar myself. When I mentioned it, the response was basically that the server was busy with another table, which felt dismissive given how long we had already been waiting. No one was busy. By the time food arrived, it was around 6:45 PM. The problem wasn't just the wait, it was the lack of communication or basic hospitality the entire time. I actually emailed the restaurant directly after our visit and never heard back, which is disappointing and honestly says a lot. At this point, it's hard not to feel like they just don't really care about the customer experience or about keeping people coming back. My husband and I come here all the time. A little too much if you ask me. Just the right amount if you ask my husband. We've tried multiple menu items - wedge salad, state burger, chicken sandwich, meatballs, bacon wrapped dates, macaroni and cheese, bread pudding, etc. All of these are delicious and we've ordered them time and time again. They have a variety of cocktails that are also great. They've got a full bar with everything you could imagine. The restaurant itself is very nice. There are 3 booths on the side and half booth/half table in the center. You can also sit at the pony bar, actual bar, or outside. Lots of options. We like the side booths or the bar. The staff is super nice and friendly every time we are there. My husband and I usually just walk in and we're able to get a table (around 5-6pm). Fridays are busy due to the night market so be sure to make a reservation on OpenTable. I went back for brunch and the steak and eggs tacos were SO GOOD! The steak was tender and perfectly cooked and seasoned. I I wish I had taken photos. We also got the chicken and waffles. The fried chicken was perfectly battered and fried and so were the waffles. Both dishes were well-made. Our sever was very attentive. My only suggestion would be for them to have non-diary milk substitutes for the coffee Also, maybe offer a French Press. This was my 4th visit and this and the last visit were my two favorites. There's public and street parking to get here. The atmosphere is nice for a semi-casual environment. The dim lighting indoors is chill and the outdoor seating is fun. You especially get a good breeze from the open front. The volume level is decent even while busy. The food arrive at a good time. I got the Truffle burger. It seems like they cook all burgers to medium. Regardless, it was delicious. The patty was juicy and a good portion to fill up. Thw chips are nice and crunchy, not too salty. We were actually able to walk in and get a table pretty quickly on a Friday night--even with a street fair going on along Myrtle, which was a nice surprise. The area itself is great to walk around before or after your meal, which adds to the overall experience. The food was solid across the board. The cheese plate was delicious and a great starter. The shrimp tacos were tasty, and the mac and cheese with shrimp added was a standout--super rich and satisfying. But the real highlight for me was dessert--the chocolate-filled beignets were so good and definitely a must-order. Drinks were also on point. Luckily, someone asked the question on the page and someone from the business responded back with a link. I had a little hard time finding where to make a reservation online, but I found it eventually. When I went last, it was New Years eve, so it was extremely busy. I came back on a "normal" weekday and it wasn't as busy. We came back for their tacos and I noticed that they weren't the same. Each taco Tuesday is different and they do not have the ingredients to make the tacos listed the week prior. Love the variety, but saddened to not be able to have something I truly enjoyed available to order. I would call the restaurant to see what tacos are going to be on the menu for taco Tuesday (good luck if anyone picks up the phone). The environment was casual, chill, and quiet. Not too busy with patrons. We were able to order our meals. My husband tried their tacos that they had that evening and he enjoyed them. I also got a barbeque burger that was worth the price. Great patio space was perfect with heaters to keep things toasty. The outdoor Christmas ambiance was beautiful. Having our cousins Christmas time was a perfect space for us to enjoy. Food was good. Service was great. A smaller location if you have a big group I'd recommend reserving the whole patio. There's a good amount of open space to mix & mingle. The power went out for a good while during our visit in December. The street lights stayed on but we could definitely tell with difference when our toasty heaters stopped glowing. The chicken breast was juicy, but I didn't like the lemon veloute mixed with mushroom and sun-dried tomato. The creamy sauce tasted more "sour" than "lemony". Also, the amount of sun-dried tomato was overpowering. - Bourbon BBQ Burger ($16). Two thick slabs of bacon and onion rings topped this thick, juicy burger. It was cooked to medium as requested. The burger was lightly sauced, and most of the bbq sauce sat on the onion rings. The sharp white cheddar went well with the burger. I just would have preferred crispier bacon. My side salad was a delicious mix of leafy greens, watermelon radish, and candied almonds lightly dressed in a sweet vinaigrette. - Biergarten Burger ($19 - daily special). The two smash burgers patties on a pretzel bun with mustard. Instead of the side salad, my bf upgraded to a side of onion rings. For the dip, he chose the beer cheese which was fantastic. I liked the concept of this burger, but the sweetness of whatever else was in it threw me off. - Blackberry Burger ($18). The burger was tender and juicy and perfectly cooked. I enjoyed the blackberry BBQ sauce, which was slightly sweet and contained whole blackberries. I also liked the lemon vinaigrette for the side salad. I came here the other day because I was curious about this restaurant. This restaurant would be a great place to have a little date. If you don't have reservations, they will seat you at the bar area; so, it's best that you do before hand to get a table. On our 1st visit, we ordered the double smash burger and Brussel sprouts. Both dishes were delicious and my boyfriend and I ended up coming back again for a 2nd visit. On our 2nd visit, we ordered the Caesar salad, braised short rib tacos, and mac n cheese. After trying all the food we had here, I recommend their burgers with fries, Caesar salad, and brussels sprouts. Everything else was either ok or the meat was very dry; which I don't recommend the tacos. This quaint eatery was a homeowner for our lunchtime hunger on Friday. We arrived shortly after opening, around d 11:00am. The ambiance was amazing and well thought out. The service was quick and our server was very attentive as she kept our drinks to the brim and checked in often to ensure we had a pleasant experience. The food. This is where it slaps. We both got the BBQ burger with onion rings and shared an order of poutine. The burger was perfectly cooked to order, medium, with a buttery, toasted brioche bun and smokey bacon...delicious. The onion rings...OMG the onion rings. The batter was so thin and so crispy! I would make the 30 mile trip back just for the onion rings! Do not leave here without trying them! One of my favorite happy our restaurant in downtown Monrovia. It has an amazing menu with wide window from 11 AM to 6 PM. I am so bummed I just found about this place but now I am sharing it with all my friends and we frequently come here to eat and grab some drinks. The food they prepare is really delicious and it's cooked to your liking. The staff is really kind. They even offer a coloring sheet and crayons to kids and often bring them fruits as well. It's a kid friendly restaurant. I enjoy the ambience. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. There's great parking both in a public parking lot nearby as well as on the street. If you're serious about dining here and don't want to wait for a phantom open table, make sure you make reservations online first, even a few minutes before you walk into The State, as they honor those over people waiting in person. We waited 20 minutes for a table of four without a reservation, while they had three 4-top tables available inside reserved for those with online reservations (those people never materialized during our entire dining visit). They also seated us at the table closest to the door, so we got the cold air every time someone came in and every time a server went outside to serve the patio. We haven't dined at The State since the change from their predecessor, so we ordered a spread of appetizers and entrees and desserts to try it all! Unfortunately, everything was pretty salty: the poutine ($16), the deep fried oysters ($20 for 4 pieces), bruschetta ($10 for 4 pieces), double smash burger ($17 plus extra $1 for fries side), and mamma's meatballs ($16). The two chicken items we had weren't as seasoned (pesto chicken sandwich $16 and veloute chicken $24), so given the choice, might be better to order the chicken dishes instead of the others. We also felt very jipped with the meatballs dish as it only came with four meatballs, two piece of bread, and a whole lot of sauce for $16. Given how salty the dish was, some more bread would've been nice to soak up the sauce and balance out the meatballs. The star of the night were the desserts. The crème brulee ($10) and bread pudding ($10) were the best things we had all night, though we noticed that the caramelized top of the crème brulee was really thick, so half the group skipped that to save their teeth. We've also never had bread pudding served cubed before, but it paired well with the scoop of vanilla ice cream included with the dessert. Service was okay. They were friendly when engaged, but pretty hard to get their attention if you needed something. They weren't super busy either, yet we had to always flag someone down to refill our empty drinks (we downed a lot because everything was salty). Third time is not always a charm. I've been coming here with my girl-friend / co-worker once a month for lunch and a cocktail. The food always just okay. The cocktails also okay. I mean how can you mess up a martini. We usually come here for the superb service, overall. This third time, Edgar just had no decorum, he unprofessional and should not be in the industry if you don't have the tact that it's required to address the patron. It's not what he said, it's how he said it. The attitude, the undertone under he's breath of words. Just simply rude and disrespectful. He wanted the booth we were sitting at. He said it had been reserved. But there were plenty of other booths / tables available. We had ordered food, couple rounds of cocktails. We were consuming. I didn't get it. But I was not going to entertain a hasty conversation with someone with a poor attitude. We left. I recently celebrated a friend's birthday at The State on Myrtyle Ave in Monrovia, and it was such a great experience from start to finish! I made a reservation on OpenTable, and the hostess had a cozy booth ready for us ahead of time - huge plus! Our server was friendly, attentive, and ensured we were well taken care of the entire night. Their food & drinks here are so great, and we family-style shared everything. The Bacon Wrapped Dates ($10) was sweet, savory, and crispy, just like you'd expect. The Bruschetta ($10) was well-seasoned but a little too on the burnt-side for me but my boyfriend liked it so :) The Caesar Salad ($12) was a classic one - no complaints here and for $12, it was a great price for the amount. The Shrimp Tacos ($12) and Short Rib Tacos ($12) tasted great as well, but I do wish both of them had more sauce. The Crawfish Mac & Cheese ($22) was cheesy, creamy, and loaded with crawfish - definitely one of my highlights! The New York Steak ($39) was cooked medium-rare, and I just wish I had more room in my tummy to enjoy it more. As for drinks, they have got something for everyone here. I don't drink alcohol, and I was so happy to know they had a Hibiscus Cooler mocktail, which our server recommended. It's a delicious and refreshing mocktail that I LOVED! Yes, all caps, LOVED! It had pineapple, lime, and ginger, and hibiscus syrup - all my fave flavors in one drink. My group also loved their beers and it's always a win-win when a place naisl both cocktails and mocktails. The energy here is chill but lively, making it a great spot for celebrations. I saw there were other party groups as well. Plus, their Happy Hour is Mon-Fri from 11 AM to 6 PM and definitely worth checking out for $6 well spirits, $1 off beer & wine, and $7-10 food specials. Visited around 6pm on a Friday night when there street fair was going on outside on Myrtle. Parking could be a little hectic on Fridays when the street closure on Myrtle takes up parking spaces, but you can still find street parking in surrounding neighborhoods or if you're patient in the many public lots. We had a reservaiton so we were shown right to our table. Service was great and there were a lot of great options to choose from on the menu both in the cocktails and food categories. I went with the Blackberry Barbecue burger which included an herbacious aioli, melty brie, a blackberry barbecue sauce, some arugula & piece or two of candied bacon. WoW that burger was DELICIOUS! I also had onion rings on the side and they were cooked to perfection. They were so cruncy and perfect. I had a 45 minute drive home and my husband ate half my burger and the leftover onion rings when I got home and those onion rings had retained their crunch factor despite being stored in the cardboard box for almost an hour! I really enjoyed the interior design of the space at The State too, it was darkish and moody with peacock wallpaper, interesting light fixtures and clever framed portriats of distinguised pigs. read more
