I went back for brunch and the steak and eggs tacos were SO GOOD! The steak was tender and perfectly cooked and seasoned. I I wish I had taken photos. We also got the chicken and waffles. The fried chicken was perfectly battered and fried and so were the waffles. Both dishes were well-made. Our sever was very attentive. My only suggestion would be for them to have non-diary milk substitutes for the coffee Also, maybe offer a French Press. This was my 4th visit and this and the last visit were my two favorites. Ambiance is spacious, modern and causal.
Stopped by during the street fair and grabbed a seat on the patio perfect setup for people-watching. The energy from the crowd paired with the laid back patio atmosphere made it an ideal spot to just sit back and take it all in. Service was quick and efficient, even with the extra traffic from the event. Everything moved smoothly without feeling rushed. Went with a hot toddy, and it hit exactly right smooth bourbon, well-balanced, and served properly hot. Simple, but done really well. Overall, a great stop during a busy day good drinks, easy service, and a patio that really adds to the experience. A+
There's public and street parking to get here. The atmosphere is nice for a semi-casual environment. The dim lighting indoors is chill and the outdoor seating is fun. You especially get a good breeze from the open front. The volume level is decent even while busy. The food arrive at a good time. I got the Truffle burger. It seems like they cook all burgers to medium. Regardless, it was delicious. The patty was juicy and a good portion to fill up. Thw chips are nice and crunchy, not too salty. Although it took a bit of time to get the check to leave especially when there's a limited amount of tables.
The State off Myrtle in Monrovia is a small, cozy spot with a great vibe--especially if you can grab a seat on the outdoor patio. Inside, they have a comfortable full bar that adds to the overall laid-back but elevated feel. We were actually able to walk in and get a table pretty quickly on a Friday night--even with a street fair going on along Myrtle, which was a nice surprise. The area itself is great to walk around before or after your meal, which adds to the overall experience. The food was solid across the board. The cheese plate was delicious and a great starter. The shrimp tacos were tasty, and the mac and cheese with shrimp added was a standout--super rich and satisfying. But the real highlight for me was dessert--the chocolate-filled beignets were so good and definitely a must-order. Drinks were also on point. The espresso martini was strong, smooth, and honestly one of the better ones I've had. Service-wise, the staff was friendly and welcoming, but things did move pretty slow throughout the meal, so just come with a little patience. Overall, a great spot for good food, strong drinks, and a relaxed night out--just not if you're in a rush.
The phone number that is provided on the Yelp page kept ringing when I called to see if I can make a reservation over the phone, but no one picked up. Luckily, someone asked the question on the page and someone from the business responded back with a link. I had a little hard time finding where to make a reservation online, but I found it eventually. When I went last, it was New Years eve, so it was extremely busy. I came back on a "normal" weekday and it wasn't as busy. We came back for their tacos and I noticed that they weren't the same. Each taco Tuesday is different and they do not have the ingredients to make the tacos listed the week prior. Love the variety, but saddened to not be able to have something I truly enjoyed available to order. I would call the restaurant to see what tacos are going to be on the menu for taco Tuesday (good luck if anyone picks up the phone). The environment was casual, chill, and quiet. Not too busy with patrons. We were able to order our meals. My husband tried their tacos that they had that evening and he enjoyed them. I also got a barbeque burger that was worth the price. We also got a creme Brule for dessert. The price was $10 and it was a large enough dish to share with someone. I wished someone would have mentioned that the rim was extremely hot. I touched the rim of the bowl and pulled away quickly so I didn't hurt myself. This is the reason for my 4 stars.
We visited The State in Monrovia, and overall, the food was excellent -- especially the pork chops! Perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Our server, Edgar, was great -- attentive and friendly throughout our visit. The only downside was the seating situation. They mentioned we needed reservations, but the restaurant wasn't busy for the hour and a half we were there, so there really wasn't any reason not to seat us right away. Hopefully, management can improve that process. Other than that, everything else was great. If you're near Lemon and Myrtle in Monrovia, definitely stop by -- the food is worth it!
Great patio space was perfect with heaters to keep things toasty. The outdoor Christmas ambiance was beautiful. Having our cousins Christmas time was a perfect space for us to enjoy. Food was good. Service was great. A smaller location if you have a big group I'd recommend reserving the whole patio. There's a good amount of open space to mix & mingle. The power went out for a good while during our visit in December. The street lights stayed on but we could definitely tell with difference when our toasty heaters stopped glowing. Street parking lines the downtown area with designated lots within walking distance.
The food was really tasty and you can just see it in the photos.Makes you want to take a bite! You have the option to sit indoors or outdoors.The parking is street parking.The manager was so nice.Super accommodating and very attentive to our needs and always checked on us every now.And then to make sure that we were good, even though we were sitting outside in the patio ! Summary: 4 stars for strong drinks (Sandra Lee approved), tasty food, and good service. The flavor of the cocktails might not match their description. Food comes out relatively quickly. *** The vibe inside this small restaurant is dark and intimate. The turquoise walls feel Victorian-esque, but the lit up bar adds a modern twist. They sometimes convert the front patio into open air dining before the outdoor bar seats. Most of the tables and booths inside seat parties of 2-4. DRINKS ORDERED On weekdays, there are all-day specials in addition to the happy hour specials ending at 6 pm. For example, glasses of wine are half-off on Thursdays. - Bee's Please ($14 - gin, passionfruit, rhubarb bitters, and honeycomb). I enjoyed the floral taste of the gin, but whew! This was a stiff drink. I felt the burn in my lungs lol. Eating the honeycomb was fun. I couldn't taste the passionfruit, but my boyfriend said it was present as a slight, sweet funk. - Samurai Sour ($14 - gin, plum wine, apricot, egg white). The drink was very strong. Curiously, I perceived pineapple, gin, and maybe bitters. I appreciated the creativity even though the taste wasn't what I was looking for. - August Kessler Riesling ($13/glass). Fruity, crisp, and sweet. - Silver Palm Cabernet ($13). Fruity and bold, slightly sweet. - Marques De Cacerez Red Blend ($12/glass). Bf said this was earthy, so I took a sip. The wine was on the dry side, and I liked that it was not tanniny. MAINS/BURGERS ORDERED - Veloute Chicken ($24). The brussels sprouts and carrots were AMAZING! Maybe they were cooked in the drippings because they were so flavorful and umami. The vegetables were tender and retained crunch. I also liked the mashed potatoes. The chicken breast was juicy, but I didn't like the lemon veloute mixed with mushroom and sun-dried tomato. The creamy sauce tasted more "sour" than "lemony". Also, the amount of sun-dried tomato was overpowering. - Bourbon BBQ Burger ($16). Two thick slabs of bacon and onion rings topped this thick, juicy burger. It was cooked to medium as requested. The burger was lightly sauced, and most of the bbq sauce sat on the onion rings. The sharp white cheddar went well with the burger. I just would have preferred crispier bacon. My side salad was a delicious mix of leafy greens, watermelon radish, and candied almonds lightly dressed in a sweet vinaigrette. - Biergarten Burger ($19 - daily special). The two smash burgers patties on a pretzel bun with mustard. Instead of the side salad, my bf upgraded to a side of onion rings. For the dip, he chose the beer cheese which was fantastic. I liked the concept of this burger, but the sweetness of whatever else was in it threw me off. - Blackberry Burger ($18). The burger was tender and juicy and perfectly cooked. I enjoyed the blackberry BBQ sauce, which was slightly sweet and contained whole blackberries. I also liked the lemon vinaigrette for the side salad. SIDES ORDERED - Onion Rings ($1 upgraded side with a burger - 5 pcs). The onion rings were hefty and crispy. While I appreciated the crunch, the flavor was just okay. The onions were a bit hard and flavorless. We got a side of ranch, which was missing the dairy flavor that I'm looking for in a housemade ranch. - French Fries ($4). These straight cut fries were hot and crispy, like McDonald's but better. They were tossed with parsley or some other finely chopped herb that didn't impart much flavor.
Brought my Doberman here and they let us sit on the patio! Very dog friendly and even brought him a water with ice. The happy hour and regular menu was wonderful and affordable. Happy I stumbled along this place while walking around. Our 1st server was excellent, then it switched to a female and she was not as attentive. But he was awesome!
I want to start by saying that The State is honestly one of our favorite spots. We go not just to the Monrovia location but also the one in Rancho Cucamonga, and overall, the experience is usually amazing. The food is consistently great, the atmosphere is lively, and most of the staff truly go above and beyond--especially when accommodating large groups like ours with kids. That's not easy, and it's appreciated.

Super mediocre. We strolled in on a Sunday night as a family of five and were seated immediately by a friendly hostess. The restaurant is small and nicely designed with a beautiful bar and patio. But unfortunately that's where the ambiance stopped. The dodger game was on and so there was no music playing and it was very quiet, yet we couldn't hear the game either, unless you sit right next to the tv at the bar. So really we just heard the sounds of other diners and the clicking and clanking of silver ware. Awkward.. Onto the food. Everything needed just a pinch of salt and the quality overall was super average. Deep fried oysters 6/10 Seasonal bratwurst burger 5/10 Seasonal cocktail 8/10 Kids chicken tenders 6/10 Side salad 7/10 To be honest I wouldn't go back, maybe just for cocktails. Oh my gosh what a great Sunday! Sat at the rail bar on the street and enjoyed the sun along with the hustle and bustle of the city. Great downtown atmosphere and the food was fresh and delicious. I tried the spicy chicken sandwich and it was HUGE. It had a very decent kick and was so moist I can't wait to go again. The onion rings were perfect as was all the food. We started with a wedge salad that fed all four of us. It was unique because it has cashews...quite tasty. The staff is super attentive and they were very busy. Our food came quickly, we had plenty of fresh drinks. The staff is so on point combined with high quality food that we can't wait to return. read more

The main reason this gets a 4 not a 3 is how good the food was. Parking can be found around back theres plenty of public parking there. The service though? Really brings this place down. We had to wait 3 mins before we got seated, weren't given menus till we had to ask for them. My water glass was empty before my meal arrived and wasnt asked to be refilled till I had to ask the waiter for the check. The Barbecue bacon however is very recommended. 16-20$ per person expected. read more
Cute restaurant/bar located in downtown Monrovia! We were really excited to try this new spot on Myrtle. The bar looks really cool and the open indoor/outdoor space looks very trendy. I came here for Happy Hour and I was not disappointed! We ordered their bacon wrapped dates, rib tacos, meatballs, and their house burger. Also ordered the avocado lettuce wrap tacos (not part of happy hour menu). The food was really good! It was my first time trying bacon wrapped dates and was pleasantly by the flavor. The sauce that they made for the meatballs was so delicious! Definitely need it in a jar because it had a nice kick to it! I also ordered a side of onion rings with my burger and boy! One of the best fried onion rings I've had. The inside was very intimate. I will say that reservations are recommended (especially on a weekend) because there is limited seating. read more
This review is overdue. Several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed dinner on a Monday night. We split the crispy Brussels sprouts, the Irish style burger smothered with pub cheese and served with onions rings and the wedge salad. The onion rings were crispy and flavorful and so was the burger, the cheese was a nice complement. The wedge was okay, I prefer a little more bleu crumbles. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was good! I was a little disappointed in the "poutine" they served. Unfortunately, I would not consider it to be poutine at all because they gratinated the cheese across the top rather than keeping the curds throughout. Cheese curds are the best part! I dined here twice on different occasions. One was around lunch and another was around dinner. Both times I got a burger, and both times burger was well done when I asked for medium. Service is ok, it's a small place. This place is not cheap, so I was expecting some competence when ordering a burger and asked what temperature I would like. If you're going to make them all well done, don't ask your costumers what temperate they prefer. Anyway, I'd take a look at other reviews before going here and being disappointed. read more
Finally tried The State. I love walking past it and seeing people hanging out having fun on Friday nights, but haven't had the chance to step in until today. We came to celebrate my son's 16th birthday because he wanted steak and everyone enjoyed their meal. He obviously had steak, a my daughters had smash burgers, my mom got the shrimp tacos, I had the impossible burger and my husband got the drunken pig. We pass by The State often when we visit the farmer's market on Fridays. There's a little outdoor bar type of seating facing the street that I thought would be nice to sit on a warm day, watching people stroll by. Unfortunately, this time around, it was too hot and we were sweating. NONETHELESS, we were determined to eat there since we were both craving burgers and fries. When we got there around 6pm on a Friday, all the indoor seating was full and only the outdoor area was open. The servers came quickly to provide us with menus and iced water. Food ordered: blackberry barbecue burger with onion tempura & pineapple express with house fries for an upgrade Blackberry barbecue burger: a ton of flavor and juice was packed in that first big bite. The bacon was crisp but not dry, the barbecue sauce was sweet and tangy with a bit of a kick. The burger was medium cooked as ordered and juicy. Onion rings were quite crispy, maybe a little too crispy for my liking because it was mostly batter and little onion Pineapple Express burger: this was their featured burger and it did not disappoint. The burger patty was topped with Kahlua pork with a jalapeno pineapple jam spread on a Kings Hawaiian bun. I only wished there was more of the jam.. Just something to note, the burgers come with a salad and you can upgrade to house fries, onion rings. I'm used to fries being what's included with the burger and other sides as extra so this was different. Looking forward to trying other items on their menu! read more

I went here for happy hour and was very amazed they had such a great happy hour menu with great prices. Huge alcoholic menu. I ordered the State salad and it was very delicious. Couldn't be happier that our originally planned Sunday Brunch spot did not meet our expectations. The State had caught our eyes as we drove through Old Town Monrovia. Their open to the street floor plan and dark tones inside had my name all over it. The second we decided to take our brunch business elsewhere, The State was the first place that came to mind. We arrived right before the brunch rush and were seated right away. It was meant to be. We were seated at the huge long table in the center of the restaurant right in front of the dark, gorgeous bar. Menus are offered via QR code which is pretty common these days. Drinks were ordered right away, of course we had mimosas. I had my eye on the Samurai Sour and eventually gave in. Super tasty and quite refreshing. Definitely ordering that again. We ordered a lot more food than I took pictures of..we were all pretty hangry. But I know the Fried Brussels and the waffle were a couple of our favorite items. Really enjoyed the ambience. Food and drinks are top notch. The weekends and night life are super chill in Monrovia. Can't wait to come back for a wine tasting or Whiskey Wednesday. read more

Located in Old Town Monrovia, The State is definitely an "eye catcher". The decor is beautiful and feels sophisticated. Food: We ordered Fried Brussel Sprouts 10/10, Street tacos 10/10, Drunken Pig Burger 9/10. The kids had chicken tenders and fries. They also gave us complimentary fruit for the kids to enjoy. It was a very nice gesture of our waitress. Drinks: I ordered the hibiscus bliss, it was refreshing 9/10 and of course my boyfriend had the Hazy IPA. Overall, the food, drinks and service were amazing. Our waitress was very helpful and delivered top-notch service. We were talking about coming back for happy hour. read more

3/18/24 Wow! 1st timer here and was amazing. To start the place is very cool and hip i would say. Tons of Drink options from the beautiful bar set in back. We had Reservations for 4 and had a great Booth. Reese was our Server for the evening and he was Top Notch on everything . Very attentive and helpful. We started with The Happy Hour Items , Brussels Sprouts and Meatballs . Wow cooked perfectly and just the right amount for 4 of us to share. Both Appetizers highly recommend. For my Drink I had the Bourbon Mule and was delish. Had a great amount of ginger and was so refreshing. Can neither confirm or deny I Had 3 of them . Anyways on to the main dish . I ordered the Irish Pub Burger with Onion rings. Wagyu Beef w/ caramelized onions and crisp thick bacon. Cooked Med Rare to perfection. The onion rings were crisp and delish. For Dessert had the Creme Brûlée one of my All time favorites. It was sooooo good . The Whole Night was great and loved The Ambiance of it all. Definitely will come back to visit when back in Cali . After passing by a few times and admiring the interior decor, I finally decided to stop by The State for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious burger and side salad meal. The burger was pretty big but balanced well by the salad. You can opt for fries for an extra charge, but in this case, given how big the burger is, I think the salad was a great pairing. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay, which was okay--maybe next time I'll go for the Sauvignon Blanc instead. read more

Cool new spot on Myrtle! Cocktails are good! They also have a good brunch menu on the weekends. Breakfast burrito was super good and not too dry! Full of short ribby goodness! I also tried the seasonal burger (Italian style) and it was decent but felt more like a meatball than a burger. This new restaurant in Old Town opened recently where the 1776 pub used to be. We were excited to finally try it bc it's been under construction for ages. The vibe is nice, especially if you're looking for a classy bar type atmosphere. All the staff are friendly and happy hour prices are solid. Unfortunately, everything we tried was extremely salty except for the wedge salad and service is super slow. They have a decent happy hour menu Monday - Friday from 11am to 6pm. And their happy hour prices are very good - regular menu seemed a tad overpriced imo so I recommend happy hour. We made it just in time so we sampled several things - the meatballs, wedge salad, short rib street tacos, and soup & salad. Everything was presented beautifully- but was insanely salty except for the wedge salad and the short rib tacos. The happy hour short rib tacos comes with 2 and they were the tiniest tacos I've ever seen. They also had a strange flavor - I was expecting savory bc, you know, short rib - but it's very sweet so I wasn't a fan. The meatballs had a lovely bread and would've been our fave except - SO SALTY!! My biggest disappointment was their soup of the day - it was French onion which is one of my absolute faves but it was soooo salty I couldn't take more than a couple of bites. Even the house salad dressing is salty. When we arrived, there were several tables open but all reserved so we had to sit at the bar or wait for ages. We opted for bar seating - but their bar stools are the most uncomfortable things I've ever sat on - hard hard wood and super tall so it sucks if you're short like me and the seats tilt you forward so you're constantly fighting to stay on the stool. Also, the sun in the evening comes glaring into the restaurant and they have no window covers so you have to hunch over just to see anything you're eating. Highly recommend making reservations for a table on the left side of the restaurant away from the glaring sun in a comfortable booth lol. Also - the cell signal inside was nonexistent for me (T-Mobile) and my hubby (Verizon) - and they have no WiFi so it was a challenge bc my hubby had to send some work emails and had to keep going outside lol. Plan ahead to not need your phone. Staff are friendly but service is so slow - they congregate at the host stand often and chat - also behind the bar. After the bartender took our order, I never saw him again. I had to ask other staff several times for a water refill. When we were ready for our check I went to the bar but was ignored while the bartenders chatted and eventually had to move to another spot at the bar and still go ignored. So that was a little frustrating. I would say this is probably a great spot if you're wanting to hang out with some cocktails - the decor is chic and fun and the cocktails all looked beautifully presented like the food. But can't speak to taste - my hubby and I aren't much for alcohol so I doubt we'll be back given the salt level of all the food and all the other issues. read more
This place just opened up in Old Town and it's been such a vibe. The restaurant is beautiful inside and the patio is nice too if you want to enjoy some fresh air. Service was amazing and the food and drinks are really good too! We've been here twice already within the same week. The Fried Brussel Sprouts are a favorite. It's so crispy and flavorful. They also put a bit of goat cheese and it pairs so well together. We also loved the Spinach & Artichoke Grilled Cheese. It was toasted perfectly and so cheesy without being overwhelming. For drinks, we always order the Girl Next Door and Hibiscus Bliss. They're both really fresh and fruity. Two drinks each are strong enough for a good time. read more

I met my darling girls here for a birthday celebration. I arrived early and was greeted by Brandy. She was an absolute doll - very friendly and attentive. The State has locations in Redlands and Rancho Cucamonga. Monrovia is the newest addition. They have an extensive selection of Bourbon & Whiskey, which was the appeal since one of my girls is a Bourbon fan. The place is small & intimate, and the décor is lovely, especially the wooden bar. At the start of our meal it was fairly empty, but by the time we left the place was packed. However, this did not affect our service or the timely arrival of our food & drinks. My friend requested the House Old Fashioned, I had the Girl Next Door (Vodka, blackberries, elderflower liquor, lemon, & simple), and the birthday girl a Salted Matcha Lemonade. We ordered a few dishes to share: Poutine, Bruschetta, Tempura Battered Onion Rings, Spinach & Artichoke Grilled Cheese, & Pesto Chicken Sandwich. The Old Fashioned was on point and my cocktail was tasty & refreshing. The Salted Matcha Lemonade was a pretty mocktail and BDG enjoyed it. The Poutine was not traditional. Instead, it was a creative spin comprised of a generous serving of fries with braised short rib, gravy, cheese curds, and topped with melted cheese. I was able to pick out some fries without the meat and they were yummy, especially with the melted cheese. The Bruschetta was also a creative twist on a classic - toasted baguette topped with diced tomatoes, asiago cheese, garlic aioli, balsamic drizzle & a basil chiffonade. It was delicious. The onion rings were crispy and not greasy and tasted great dipped in ranch dressing. The Spinach & Artichoke Grilled Cheese was AMAZING!!! A delightful combination of spinach, artichoke, asiago, & mozzarella with garlic aioli on grilled sourdough. I highly recommend. My friend liked the Pesto Chicken Sandwich, which was grilled chicken, shredded asiago, chopped applewood smoked bacon, arugula, roasted tomato basil pesto on a ciabatta roll. Both sandwiches came with fries, which were good. After this scrumptious feast, we were too full for dessert, but Brandy was sweet enough to bring the birthday girl some ice cream with a candle, which we happily shared. I was impressed with the quality and the taste of everything we ordered and Brandy's fantastic customer service. I would like to come back and try their brunch. This location has been open for about a year and they are doing everything right. The check IDs of all patrons.
