This new restaurant in Old Town opened recently where the 1776 pub used to be. We were excited to finally try it bc it's been under construction for ages. The vibe is nice, especially if you're looking for a classy bar type atmosphere. All the staff are friendly and happy hour prices are solid. Unfortunately, everything we tried was extremely salty except for the wedge salad and service is super slow. They have a decent happy hour menu Monday - Friday from 11am to 6pm. And their happy hour prices are very good - regular menu seemed a tad overpriced imo so I recommend happy hour. We made it just in time so we sampled several things - the meatballs, wedge salad, short rib street tacos, and soup & salad. Everything was presented beautifully- but was insanely salty except for the wedge salad and the short rib tacos. The happy hour short rib tacos comes with 2 and they were the tiniest tacos I've ever seen. They also had a strange flavor - I was expecting savory bc, you know, short rib - but it's very sweet so I wasn't a fan. The meatballs had a lovely bread and would've been our fave except - SO SALTY!! My biggest disappointment was their soup of the day - it was French onion which is one of my absolute faves but it was soooo salty I couldn't take more than a couple of bites. Even the house salad dressing is salty. When we arrived, there were several tables open but all reserved so we had to sit at the bar or wait for ages. We opted for bar seating - but their bar stools are the most uncomfortable things I've ever sat on - hard hard wood and super tall so it sucks if you're short like me and the seats tilt you forward so you're constantly fighting to stay on the stool. Also, the sun in the evening comes glaring into the restaurant and they have no window covers so you have to hunch over just to see anything you're eating. Highly recommend making reservations for a table on the left side of the restaurant away from the glaring sun in a comfortable booth lol. Also - the cell signal inside was nonexistent for me (T-Mobile) and my hubby (Verizon) - and they have no WiFi so it was a challenge bc my hubby had to send some work emails and had to keep going outside lol. Plan ahead to not need your phone. Staff are friendly but service is so slow - they congregate at the host stand often and chat - also behind the bar. After the bartender took our order, I never saw him again. I had to ask other staff several times for a water refill. When we were ready for our check I went to the bar but was ignored while the bartenders chatted and eventually had to move to another spot at the bar and still go ignored. So that was a little frustrating. I would say this is probably a great spot if you're wanting to hang out with some cocktails - the decor is chic and fun and the cocktails all looked beautifully presented like the food. But can't speak to taste - my hubby and I aren't much for alcohol so I doubt we'll be back given the salt level of all the food and all the other issues. read more

Arriving just after it opened, seated right away, quick service. We ordered the BBQ burger with onion rings, the meatballs with 2 slices of toasted bread, that includes a salad with lemon vinaigrette dressing! The presentation was GREAT! The burger was cooked as ordered, very tasty, on a brioche bun. The meatballs (3 in the order) were good size, the sauce had good flavor, but a bit spicy. This place just opened up in Old Town and it's been such a vibe. The restaurant is beautiful inside and the patio is nice too if you want to enjoy some fresh air. Service was amazing and the food and drinks are really good too! We've been here twice already within the same week. The Fried Brussel Sprouts are a favorite. It's so crispy and flavorful. They also put a bit of goat cheese and it pairs so well together. We also loved the Spinach & Artichoke Grilled Cheese. It was toasted perfectly and so cheesy without being overwhelming. The State hits the mark when it comes to its its food and its flavors, it's service and its drinks. The ambiance is very industrial, and they set a very uniform tone with it all. The bar is lit with an archive of whiskeys that you can choose from. They also have a good lot of other liquor to satisfy what ever your craving. The service was outstanding, and our first host, who had to head out mid meal since it was the end of his shift, was amazing, and we appreciated your energy. The service was maintained after he had left and was taken over by those at the bar. Overall, great hosts, great suggestions, and a great experience. The food was on point ... we started with bacon covered dates and their Brussel sprouts, which both were delicious. If you're not too much for that sweet and salty, don't do the dates, but honestly, they were pretty good. Ingot their bourbon western burger, and my girlfriend got the blackberry bbq burger.. so I loved my burger... but... I loved hers more, lol... I finished mine, and it was fantastic, but I will tell you I will go back and get the blackberry bbq burger. Also note... it was a special seasonal burger sooooo if ya wanna try it.... go asap. Stopped by tonight on opening day with the hubby. The restaurant itself is beautiful. It has an open air concept with the interior and outside seating areas merging. We sat at the high top outside and had a beautiful view of the street and sunset. We knew we wanted to try a few plates so we ordered off the happy hour menu (3-6pm on weekdays). Shared the street tacos (short rib), avocado tempura wraps, meatballs, and the wedge salad. Everything was great and beautifully plated. My fav were the avocado tempura wraps.. so delicious! I liked everything except for the street tacos. Flavor was a little off maybe it was the watermelon radish. But still fair to try and judge for yourself. My husband loved the old fashioned and it was fairly priced. In fact, I felt as though everything was fairly priced. They have amazing drink deals depending on the day of the week. I noticed the website had a reservations option and to be honest, the interior is kind of small and I would recommend making a reservation on the weekend if possible. The first time I came here, I tried their braised short rib plate and found it so flavorful, so I decided to come back to try the rib eye, and sure enough, it did not disappoint. I met my darling girls here for a birthday celebration. I arrived early and was greeted by Brandy. She was an absolute doll - very friendly and attentive. The State has locations in Redlands and Rancho Cucamonga. Monrovia is the newest addition. They have an extensive selection of Bourbon & Whiskey, which was the appeal since one of my girls is a Bourbon fan. The place is small & intimate, and the décor is lovely, especially the wooden bar. At the start of our meal it was fairly empty, but by the time we left the place was packed. However, this did not affect our service or the timely arrival of our food & drinks. My friend requested the House Old Fashioned, I had the Girl Next Door (Vodka, blackberries, elderflower liquor, lemon, & simple), and the birthday girl a Salted Matcha Lemonade. We ordered a few dishes to share: Poutine, Bruschetta, Tempura Battered Onion Rings, Spinach & Artichoke Grilled Cheese, & Pesto Chicken Sandwich. The Old Fashioned was on point and my cocktail was tasty & refreshing. The Salted Matcha Lemonade was a pretty mocktail and BDG enjoyed it. The Poutine was not traditional. Instead, it was a creative spin comprised of a generous serving of fries with braised short rib, gravy, cheese curds, and topped with melted cheese. I was able to pick out some fries without the meat and they were yummy, especially with the melted cheese. The Bruschetta was also a creative twist on a classic - toasted baguette topped with diced tomatoes, asiago cheese, garlic aioli, balsamic drizzle & a basil chiffonade. It was delicious. The onion rings were crispy and not greasy and tasted great dipped in ranch dressing. The Spinach & Artichoke Grilled Cheese was AMAZING!!! A delightful combination of spinach, artichoke, asiago, & mozzarella with garlic aioli on grilled sourdough. I highly recommend. My friend liked the Pesto Chicken Sandwich, which was grilled chicken, shredded asiago, chopped applewood smoked bacon, arugula, roasted tomato basil pesto on a ciabatta roll. Both sandwiches came with fries, which were good. After this scrumptious feast, we were too full for dessert, but Brandy was sweet enough to bring the birthday girl some ice cream with a candle, which we happily shared. I was impressed with the quality and the taste of everything we ordered and Brandy's fantastic customer service. I would like to come back and try their brunch. Everything was flavored very well, steak was cooked great and the poutine was so hearty. Only ding I could give is the bread pudding was lukewarm, expected it to be hot. Solids spot in Downtown Monrovia They have a good variety of foods, and I have been here a few time given their nice atmosphere Service can run slow though I feel their appetizers are the stars. Their bacon wrapped dates are amazing- runs a little sweet but well balanced with savory and salt. Their poutine is also really solid and hard to get good ones in this area I like their burgers as well which are solid choices. I have tried their Bourbon Barbecue sandwich which was solid. Although their onion rings side was a little greasy. State burger is what you would expect from a standard burger. The Tzatziki burger is flavorful and moist with a great healthier alternative. The food always is top notch for us and brunch today was more than perfect, the bacon wrapped dates, fried chicken and waffles to the state burger is where you can't go wrong. Our server Jess is always great, every time we've seen her she knows how we like our drinks and always recommends great cocktails to try out. The patio is a great area but with the rain we sat inside but being inside a beautiful restaurant with that lounging/date night type of feel is always welcoming. BE AWARE! I've been to multiple places and all of them allowed us to have separate charges if the customer requested and this place said they can't because they only accept two cards. Yes, even if that's true. That is not the case, we are not giving more than two cards, I asked specifically to get our check separately because I don't know the people we are with in the party and the server said no. The best time to come to The State (at least for this location) is on Friday evenings when downtown Monrovia is closed off for the farmer's market. Double win!
