What a mistake. Even though a few reviews stated that there was very little meat in the food, I thought that I'd give it a try anyway thinking perhaps it was just a bad night. Well, what a mistake. I ordered over $90 worth of food and I would estimate an ounce of meat came in each container (which is supposed to serve four) of food. This is a rip off and totally unacceptable. Not only that, none of the items came with the standard white rice which 99.9 percent of other restaurants include. White rice I mean, the cheap stuff. It is their way of raising prices I guess, so they get an extra buck an item. We ordered green curry and clearly curries are meant to eat with rice so the rice absorbs the sauce. Well, no rice, just a container of curry with a few pieces of tofu. I had to cook my own white rice. One of the items ordered was not even included in our bags, which was not noticed until we all sat down to dinner. This was a dish that I specifically discussed with two people on the phone as it only came in a combination plate and we wanted a full serving. So, even discussing and getting a price, it was not included. You should have seen the fried rice containers. Each of them were all rice and only a few pieces of the meat. The chop suey, where was the meat? Never again. The restaurant deliberately and consciously has decided to rip off customers by using less meat and not including white rice with entree items. read more

Basil Thai dropped a menu at our door and we decided to try them for takeout. We ordered pad Thai-veg, chicken curry, Penang chicken, chow mein and pork fried rice. The order came with free gyozo. Everything was delicious and there was a lot of food. The gyozo tasted amazing and instead of a bite, each was a couple of well filled bites. I live pad Thai, and this didn't disappoint. The Penang and curry were both spicy and delicious. Chow mein was very good (will order again). I was least excited about the pork fried rice when we placed order, but it blew away my expectations with big pieces of charshu pork...so good. We will be back. read more

For being one of those asian restaurants that don't give chopsticks unless you ask, the food is decent although curry is a bit watered down. BUT I also know for a fact the owners pay less then minimum wage to their servers, and tip credit is illegal in California. So on principle I can't give a good rating to this joint. read more

You know that phrase "good cop; bad cop" ? Thai Basil sometimes falls in the "good waiter; bad waiter" category. 3 trips ago, the waiter took my majorly unfinished plate away because I had to step outside to answer a call. My lunch companion said she yelled after him but he grabbed and ran. 2 trips ago the table next to us got water refills and hot food, while we had to ask the good waiter to refill our water. But my most recent trip, I got brave and tried the yellow curry with tofu. It was excellent. And I fell in love all over again with Thai Basil. Yes, we had the good waiter on this day. My lunch buddy got a vegan lunch of vegetables and it was a quite a plate. Made me envious until I tasted the curry. It was just at my heat level and the vegetable were cooked through and delicious. My experiences here before were somewhat memorable; therefore, I expected great results, instead I was greeted to an empty restaurant...not a good sign during the noon lunch rush. I ordered the S-2 (BBQ ribs), which was not bad at first, tasted a lot like Filipino adobo, which was a bit strange and unexpected. Food wasn't terrible, I've just had better. I tried to get a receipt after the meal, but the server refused. I've never met a business that knowingly refused to give a receipt. For the price, go elsewhere. I don't know if they are under new management or a new chef, but the only review below that I agree with is the one that said, "the pad thai tasted like mixing ketchup with noodles and microwaving" I came here a few days ago with 2 friends, one who had never tried Thai before, and the other who is half thai. The thai-food newbie said he would never eat thai food again and my thai friend said, she thought the food made her feel queasy The Pad Thai was by far the worst Pad Thai I've had in my life... the masaman seemed like they poured a can of frozen peas/carrots onto some curry and mixed it with a lot of coconut milk that reminded me of puke. Not only does this place serve top notch Thai food consistently, but, the service is beyond what I expect almost every single time! Today I ordered some to go food and only spent about $25 on 4 dishes...yet the owner's wife came out and gave a toy to my son to play with and keep while we were waiting. No way she had to do that. I eat here only about once a month so she knows my face, but, I'm probably not her best customer. All I can say is WOW and it is the little things that create loyal customers. It's sad to say, I used to enjoy the pad Thai, and Panang curry here until Mother's Day. I fortunately only worked half the day, Mother's Day brunch, doing 306 covers. With a 4 man line. Only to come here with my family treating my mom, her husband and little brother to dinner. Service was not only ridiculously slow with maybe 3 tables. It was neglectful, and we had to seek out a waiter. I ordered the seafood Panang curry, crab fried rice, Mongolian beef, and one other forgettable thing that I can't remember. After we placed our order the last thing to the table was the Mongolian beef my Madre ordered. we were served OLD, SOUR , practically RANCID beef. I was handed a cut off piece from the plate and I immediately spit it out. And told everyone, practically yelling to my table to stop eating. My moms husband thought I was only being an elitist jerk. And judging this small place based on my own kitchen standards. He then smelled it and almost threw up. At first the beef was passed off by the waiter like nothing was wrong. We were told the owner/manager would be out to talk to us. Of course he never showed up. They comped the dish and our 3 sodas. It's less then vigilant, to not notice things like this on the line. Yes I understand first in first out, I understand every piece of protein wasted is money down the drain, but I'd never serve something I wouldn't eat myself. I expect that from any establishment. Making money at the expense of making customers sick is NOT okay. And the fact your server tried to tell us it was how the dish is SUPPOSED to taste is adding insult to injury. I couldn't help but laugh, as he was quickly told by my family that "I'm an a actual butcher ( yes we still exist) and a chef. " Only then did the attitude change It is embarrassing to have to resort to correcting people when I'm just trying to enjoy an evening out with my family. I was a diner not a chef at that moment. I've been coming to Thai basil for a while now. My friends and I always order takeout and we usually order the same things almost every time and the food is good here. We LOVE yellow curry but the amount they give you is so small compared to other Thai restaurants. Also, for the past couple years, they've only given small amounts of chicken in the yellow curry but yesterday, we struck gold! There was way more chicken than expected! So yay for more chicken! I hope it stays consist. :). Their pad Thai and pad see ew is always really good. Make sure to ask for utensils and Napkins if you order takeout. They're inconsistent with that. Overall, food and service is pretty good here! I always try to support small family owned restaurants. When food and service is good, I try my best to be loyal. So I'll be going there again soon! Another place introduced to me by my good friend, we went out to lunch here after suffering a craving for some good local Thai food. She suggested that we go here, again because of some good lunch specials . Decided to try something different and got this dish with tofu, broccoli and a Thai peanut sauce on it. BUT to start we got a choice of an appetizer, so i got a salad and my friend got the soup of the day. Both were good choices =) Our meal was also served with some fresh fried wonton strips and a sweet and sour sauce. Everything to start was yummy! The main meal came out and the beef my friend got and the tofu dish I got both looked pretty good. My tofu was very peanut-y. and quite tasty! The service was good as well. They were very polite and made sure that we enjoyed everything during our meal. So, if you are looking for a good place to get some Thai food in long beach/ akewood area, and don't want to go to Thai BBq or Your House to get it, COME HERE!!!! I recently have been on a major wonton soup kick and the BBQ pork wonton soup is super delicious! I have a horrible habit of ordering way too much food just because I want a little of everything! So I always have days worth of left overs. I love the BBQ pork fried rice. They have great chow mien. The yellow curry shrimp is one of my favs. A must for me is to always start with the golden vegetables! It's so good and I love that there are so many different types of veggies potatoes, onions, carrots, green beans, bell peppers (one of my favs), sweet potatoes and I'm sure I'm leaving some out but anyway I'm sure you get the point. Despite the fact that my wife nearly lit our booth on fire as she draped her napkin over the table candle, we had an excellent meal here on our first visit. At first the green curry had me concerned - it was pale and I thought it'd be bland and boring, but it had a fantastic flavor - though not spicy - and just rich enough. Yummy! The satay - also tofu - was excellent... I usually don't bother with tofu satay as it's rarely much to write Yelp about, but I know my wife will be taking us back there just for the satay, and she's a woman who knows her tofu. Finally, we had - of course- the pad thai... what can I say about a dish that's pretty much always good, even in the worst joints, because bad pad thai is like bad pizza, often really, really good in its own disgusting way. Yet, I'd rank this in the top couple of pad thai's in Greater Long Beach. Nothing pale and boring about this - good, sticky, sweet, yummy pad thai. We cleaned the plate. While there were plenty of people in the restaurant - all but 1 or 2 tables were filled - it wasn't noisy, the wait staff was attentive, and service was perfectly timed. There's *no* doubt we'll be back soon; it's Thai; it's reasonably priced; the food was excellent; it's close to our house! What's not to love? read more

While I love Thai food, this place was somewhat scary. I get out of my car, after almost nailing a motorcyclist in the blind alley behind the building.....and what do I see? A lovely little letter from the department of human health services about their improper food temperatures and safety practices. (oh joy). That is when my red flag comes on....do I want to get ill? Alas I had already committed to go to this place... (cries). My friend and I took a quick seat near a wall. Inside was quite dirty.. I felt like I need to Purell the seat and the table before I sat down. Break out that hand sanitizer! The table was cracked. The first one he was going to seat us at was dirty, but there was NO ONE in the restaurant except one table (which looked like the owners) lounging around taking their time. I ordered some Satay chicken first. It was...unusual. Parts of it seemed charred and others seemed uncooked, or well, had a very interesting texture. Almost like a slight crunch then pull? I tried not eating the rest of it. The next thing that came out was Pad Thai. It was alright, but not the best I've had, and eating it was a bit of a process as I sorted through potential things that you can get contaminated from, like bamboo shoots and shrimp. Towards the end of the meal one other table was seated. Yes ONE other table. The waiter did not check in on us very frequently, so i had to get up and go back to the counter in order to get dessert. Why didn't I remember how sweet and watery it tasted the first time? Their tom yum wasn't great, either. This soup is supposed to hit you with hints of salt, sour and spice all at once-- all I got was fishy. Also, their Thai tea was laden with too much cream.
