    Kao Soi

A lovely spot to enjoy thai cuisine. Friendly staff with attentive service. I highly recommend the golden bag, which is crab stuffed cream cheese in wonton. They made sure the crab was the star instead of the cream cheese Their green curry was well balanced with the coconut milk, with eggplant and bamboo, enhancing the texture. I had chicken as the protein, which was a good amount. My coworker annihilated the Kao Soi, so that means you gotta try!

FOOD - glass noodle salad is perfect if you're looking to squeeze in vegetables without just the greens - golden bags/crab rangoons were perfectly crispy and soft/flavorfuk filling DRINKS - thai tea tastes authentic and is refreshing - lychee white sangria has a perfect balance of sweetness as the fruit doesn't overpower the drink - matai is perfect for a hot day and is one of the most popular drinks SERVICE - didn't get names but our server whom is a lady went above and beyond as i came in the last hour on a tuesday night - a young boy/teenager was insisting on taking plates/cups away when there were food/drinks left over... this threw me off BEWARE OF PARKING - located in downtown long beach so prepare time to find parking

Love love love this spot!!! The sautéed dishes are amazing! I love the crispy pork belly with peanuts and spinach-it's so unique and delicious!!!y office is nearby and we order takeout often and I opted for the pork belly and shrimp pad Thai with a side of their mouthwatering peanut sauce. We order the golden bags, and crispy spring rolls and both were sooo good!!! Perfect order every time with no mistakes or issues. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful! Street metered parking with a patio and two floors for seating. Service is phenomenal and the food is consistently a 10/10. You must go if you love Thai food!

What a great spot! Staff is friendly and service is quick, food is fantastic (definitely recommend the soft shell crab curry), and the ambiance is casual with Thai flare.

Thai district has been recommended to me soooo many times, and we finally got to try it out. Wow, this spot has such a great ambiance. It's the perfect dinner restaurant for a cozy, yet upscale date night. It's dim lighting, comfortable seating, and great service. We started off with the wings as our appetizers and Thai teas as our drinks!! The wings were crispy and flavorful. I loveeee wings so I was really happy that they were so good. The Thai tea was really good as well, it wasn't super sweet which I was a big fan of. The presentation was also done so nicely. We ordered the yellow curry and drunken noodles and both items did not disappoint. Something about yellow curry is truly just so comforting to me, and the noodles were melt in your mouth delicious. Btw, the yellow curry doesn't come with rice so you'll have to order it separately (which is what we did). All in all, I cannot wait to come back here.. this place is so delicious and truly hit all of the rankings for me in each category.

This restaurant is a gem in the downtown area of Long Beach. Parking is hard. It took us a while to find metered parking. It's su h a cute and cozy restaurant. Service was friendly and prompt. Food was delicious and their wine selection is great! This is my second time and it never disappoints.

Coconut soup is delicious with medium spice and soft tofu. Had you ew ice, nice change from pad Thai, balance of noodles greens and seafood. Restaurant was full and busy but did not feel overly crowded. Service was prompt and efficient with water refills and empty plate pickups at regular intervals. Sticky rice was that interesting dessert with a base of rice in a sweet blob, a a scoop of mango sorbet on top, and trimmed with pieces of fresh mango. Quite an eclectic collection that didn't really work for me but I could see why it was popular.

Another thai restaurant checked off the list. I have to have my Thai food regardless wherever I maybe. In Long Beach there's my usual that I have to visit and there's loads more that pops up here and there that looked quite interesting. We found this place after driving by loads of time and never been. It's located in downtown next to a bar and a few other restaurants and not far from the waterfront. Everything is walking distance from each other. Friday night which we didn't have a reservation. We walked in which there were a couple of people waiting for a table. The lady behind the counter who was also taking calls informed us that it would be a while for a table as it was full. We were fine waiting but she then mentioned that if we didn't want to wait, they had patio seating available. The front patio didn't look too pleasing for dinner as it's like a bar top literally right out front. Well, she meant a patio that was around the corner of the place. We checked it out which it was across from the bar and off the street. It didn't feel like it was part of the restaurant and just a seating that's part of whatever. We opted out with that option. Another gentleman asked if we put our name down which we didn't as we were never informed. Afterwards, it was maybe a 10 minute wait and a table was available. Honestly we noticed a good amount of open tables when we were escorted upstairs to the dining area. The seating was a little cramped and tables were pretty closed together. One wall of seats were tufted while the opposite side were single chairs with a cushion. Menu wise, all your Thai dishes with some extra added. They're not much noodle soup dishes which I like except for the boat noodles. We started off with a bootle of Malbec which was reasonable price. And the som tom (papaya salad) for a starter. Medium spice levels, it was with salted anchovies. Quite tasty on a bed of spring mix versus a wedge of cabbage like most places. It was quite tasty and enjoyed. Entrees, the chicken panang curry medium spice with steamed rice. That was tasty but portion was very small. And lastly the boat noodles medium spice level as well. I love me some boat noodles but it was a little different from what I've had at loads of other places. The broth wasn't as thick and slightly bland. It was fine but I wanted some of the pickle chili which they only had saracha paste and chili flakes. Also an order of the sticky rice. Out of everything, the papaya salad takes the cake. Panang was decent and flavorful but very small. Boat noodle on the other hand was just ok. Nothing major to rave about. The place was quite nice and very intimate in a sense of being close to each other. They were busy with both the dining downstairs as well as upstairs. It's broken down to three dining area with bottom floor which it also house the kitchen. Then you have the little mezzanine area right off the stairs with a couple of seats and then the main upstairs dining area. There's one restroom upstairs. Service was good. Staffers were friendly. And no pickles chili for a Thai restaurant...lol...

Oh how I missed restaurant thai food! Since my bestie and I were in Long Beach for the weekend why not try something different than Orange County food? Love how beautiful this restaurant was and how it definitely showed the culture of Thailand! The food was delicious including the mango sticky rice dessert! Customer service was great and accomodating too! Customers inside this restaurant were friendly as well and it's more of an intimate space. Luckily Thai District was next to Steadfast coffee and this will be our new hangout spot :). Parking was a bit tough and so I recommend parking anywhere that's near the distant to walk!

Appetizers. Dumplings, Spring Rolls and their version of crab Rangoon
    Terry J.

Scrumptious! We absolutely loved our dinner this evening. The appetizers consisted of their version of crab Rangoon. Uniquely delicious. The dumplings were crispy and had this delicious sauce covering them. Devine! We really enjoyed the spring rolls. Fresh and the peanut sauce was delightful. Our entrees consisted of Chicken Pad Thai. It's on the sweeter side but not overtly. The Pineapple Curry Fried rice was sooo good. The highlight of the meal was the cabbage salad and finally the mango sticky rice capped off a fabulous dining experience. Simply put the best meal of the trip.

This Thai restaurant was very authentically decorated and the food was phenomenal. We were a group of four and ordered lots of dishes. I only personally tried the salmon, shishito peppers, and the crispy tofu, which were all very good. The others in my group loved their food, especially the crab fried rice and the red curry with the crispy pork belly. They loved the crab fried rice so much that they ordered another order! The servers were very attentive and responsive. We will definitely be back here when in Long Beach!

Soft Shell Crab Curry (It looks better when immediately served, but I messed up the plating digging in too quickly.)

TL;DR The best Thai food. I can't go to any other place for Thai food. Sweetest staff, delicious food, and beautiful atmosphere. Food: The food was amazing as always. For an appetizer I got the wings. They were slightly spicy from the Thai chili, and they were crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. I got the fried rice with chicken. The best fried rice I've had so far. It's not oily but has the toasted flavor from the wok. The vegetables were also fresh. I got the soft shell crab curry again. The crab legs are perfectly crispy and the soft crab meat is delicious dipped in the spiced curry. I got the tom yum soup again. It is the best tom yum soup. It's balanced, but bursting with flavor. Sour and slightly spicy. Service and Ambiance: Everyone is always so nice. Tip was so kind with recommending me dishes and talking with me so genuinely. She told me I should get the roasted duck curry next time I come, and I will definitely come back to try! The ambiance is so calming and natural. Great lighting, comfortable seating and atmosphere.

I had the pad thai and it was alright just a bit plain. My friend had the duck and she said it was a bit tough. We sat outside and they moved two warmers by us because it was cold which was nice. Good service, I'd go back to try the curries.

Definitely worth it! The vibes are unmatched. It's a unique blend of "top notch cocktail crafting" and "beer and a hot pretzel after work." You can dress up, you can dress down, it's very 'just be yourself' which I love. I've literally had caviar AND hot dogs there in the same night at an event. They know how to blend high/low. Incredible knowledge and ingredients but not snooty patootie. Super inclusive and fun, with cool popups and events happening all the time. It's a full bar so you can get any cocktail you would normally order if you're keeping it simple, or beer, wine, boilermakers, etc. There's a span of offerings and price points, so something for everyone. (Also really good N/A cocktails!) The menu is super inventive and creative! And the cocktail menu changes out every so often so there are new things to try. This area is vintage vibes and Baby Gee speaks it fluently. It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

Meaning, we were spending time together and just moving through the interaction, like clothes in a spin cycle. But going here made our time together mean something more because we had arrived at a space that elevated our mood and spirits. So we were now feeling the suds and splashes of the movement not just in the monotony of the spin. As we entered, I felt like the place was a Chinese Market but indoors. I have never bene to China (I have yet to die so maybe one day my feet will have the chance to step the Great Wall) but I feel like their street vendors would have stands like the seating motif within the main room of this joint. The place was not packed but there was no space within the wooden booths for Conrad and I. I asked for options, and they showed me two different rooms. The first room was the Hao Pen You room which was heavilty yet beautifully decorated with varying red lanterns in the ceiling. Additionally, there was a paper dragon hanging in the ceiling, swimming in the air amidst the lanterns. The host ushered me in, and milaseconds after I felt a quick sense of awe. Not like the one I felt one I saw the Sisteen Chappel, but one that compelled me to snap quick photos of the aerial view. The host understood. She stopped her explanation to give me the space to feel my wow that was delivered in a red envelope. I eventually decided to sit in this room, so there is more detail that I can deliver, but before I do, I did request to see the other room of the house. So we crossed the room with the wooden booths and stepped into an immersive Tiki Bar that gave shipwreck vibes. Like the survivors of shipwreck took what they could from the boat's carcass, and made a great bar in the beach that glowed with the light of jellyfish and had seaweed on the ceiling as decoration that was not stale like mistletoe on a doorway. When Conrad and I sat in the Hao Pen You room, we learned that it was a quasi speak easy. According to history, in the 1800's it was common for Chinese immigrants to visit gambling and opium dens behind laundry rooms to find a space that they could call their own and escape discrimination. I am sure that dens of the past did not have the blazing style of the room I was sitting in, but I did appreciate learning about the history that inspired the room. Only because the pain of the past was reshaped to honor a culture in theatrical and edgy red. Plus, as one of my pictures show, the dragon's face and laser lit eyes, made it seem like a real creature born to this earth, not one simply reserved for myth and Game of Throne episodes. I appreciated the immersive trip to Chinese's lore and history. The reason why I did not give this place 5 stars, was the food. The food in general was (maybe tragically) basic. Conrad did not confirm this fact until we were outside the restaurant. I asked him why did he not share his feelings with our server when she asked? He explained why would he, she did not cook the food, and she could not do anything? And I am from the camp, where honesty matters but I guess it might only matter to me? He might be right what does honest feedback do for a server? Conrad might have been practicing "restaurant politeness" like keep the situation civil because if one becomes a demanding patron or eater then one breaks the social contract and becomes rude. Specifically, Conrad and I had the Vegan Dumplings, the pork buns, and rice wrapped in leaves. And even though we had different bites, and each one had their own flavor profile at the end I can only describe each bite as basic. That is my opinion, and I stand by it, as I should, as every one should. Perhaps this restaurant owns this identity. This might be a place that offers theatrical atmosphere, great drinks, vibes that make a Tuesday special, but their food might be the area that remains standard, and in the final score card the servers of the joint might be ok with that.

I'm always surprised when they're empty; the food is so good! Fresh, high quality and delicious. And the cocktails are some of the best in Long Beach. On top of that, they have a unique selection of tequilas and mezcals. Super underrated spot. Service is always pretty good to great! We usually get some excellent servers. Friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and happy to make recommendations. Definitely must try the ribeye taco, sopes and octopus if you want something smaller. The ribeye steak, whole fish or leg of lamb are also outstanding. Some items come with their homemade, blue corn tortillas. So yummy. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend! Parking can be a challenge, as is normal in the area. Don't let that discourage you!

The service was friendly and attentive, although it was a little slower than expected. We started with cocktails. I ordered the Pocho, made with Amaras Verde Mezcal, Bourbon, pina, guanábana, lime. The drink was enjoyable and unique, with tropical flavors that worked well together, although it was not quite as balanced as I expected. My fiancée ordered the Paloma Blanca, and it was excellent, awell-crafted cocktail. One of the highlights of the meal was the Tacos Dorados. With crema, and avocado emulsion was absolutely delicious. The flavors immediately reminded me of the potato tacos my mom used to make when I was growing up. The mushrooms added a rich depth of flavor. We also ordered the Arrachera, a 10-ounce Black Angus skirt steak served Anaheim pepper hand-pressed heirloom blue corn tortillas. The steak was flavorful and well seasoned, although it was slightly more underdone. Overall, the food was very good, and the atmosphere made the experience even more enjoyable. While the pricing felt a little high for some of the portions, the quality of the ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and memorable flavors made it a restaurant we would gladly return to. The Tacos Dorados alone are worth coming back for and also to try all other dishes like the pulpo.

False Advertising and Total Failure of a "Speakeasy"…read more This place should not call itself a speakeasy. According to their website, they are strict about dress code, reservations, and no large parties. None of that was enforced. People arrived wearing sports clothes, tennis shoes, and flip-flops, and a group of more than 10 people was allowed in. That group was loud, drunk, and screaming, completely destroying any speakeasy ambiance. We had a reservation booked one week in advance for 2 tables of six, yet by 8:30 pm, we were told no food was available, despite the bar being almost empty. The water was already on the table when we arrived and tasted strongly of chlorine, with no ice. The waitress was clearly new, untrained, and unprepared. She did not know the menu, didn't know how to take an order properly, and provided no guidance whatsoever. There was one bartender Ricardo, who took over an hour to prepare cocktails and showed no sense of urgency or care. The dramatic cocktail descriptions sounded impressive, but the drinks did not match the descriptions at all. Because of the delays, we were never even able to properly toast or celebrate our friend. The charcuterie board took forever and arrived with an absurd amount of cheese and only six pieces of bread. To make things worse, part of the food we ordered never arrived at all. The live jazz band advertised and promised never showed up. When asked, the staff responded with: "I don't know, they were supposed to be here. I don't have their phone number." That level of disorganization is unacceptable. At the end of the night, we were shocked to receive a check close to $600 for two tables, despite each person only having one cocktail and shared food. The bartender, Ricardo, approached us and said: "Well, sorry, we really tried tonight! It wasn't the best, but we tried." Honestly, that comment made the experience even more frustrating. I can't imagine how bad it would have been if they hadn't "tried."That statement perfectly summarizes the problem -- trying is not enough when everything fails. I would not recommend this place for a speakeasy experience. This is not a speakeasy. It's a poorly run bar hiding behind a concept it does not deliver. Do not recommend.
