Thai district has been recommended to me soooo many times, and we finally got to try it out. Wow, this spot has such a great ambiance. It's the perfect dinner restaurant for a cozy, yet upscale date night. It's dim lighting, comfortable seating, and great service. We started off with the wings as our appetizers and Thai teas as our drinks!! The wings were crispy and flavorful. I loveeee wings so I was really happy that they were so good. The Thai tea was really good as well, it wasn't super sweet which I was a big fan of. The presentation was also done so nicely. We ordered the yellow curry and drunken noodles and both items did not disappoint. Something about yellow curry is truly just so comforting to me, and the noodles were melt in your mouth delicious. Btw, the yellow curry doesn't come with rice so you'll have to order it separately (which is what we did). Another thai restaurant checked off the list. I have to have my Thai food regardless wherever I maybe. In Long Beach there's my usual that I have to visit and there's loads more that pops up here and there that looked quite interesting. We found this place after driving by loads of time and never been. It's located in downtown next to a bar and a few other restaurants and not far from the waterfront. Everything is walking distance from each other. Friday night which we didn't have a reservation. We walked in which there were a couple of people waiting for a table. The lady behind the counter who was also taking calls informed us that it would be a while for a table as it was full. We were fine waiting but she then mentioned that if we didn't want to wait, they had patio seating available. The front patio didn't look too pleasing for dinner as it's like a bar top literally right out front. Well, she meant a patio that was around the corner of the place. We checked it out which it was across from the bar and off the street. It didn't feel like it was part of the restaurant and just a seating that's part of whatever. We opted out with that option. Another gentleman asked if we put our name down which we didn't as we were never informed. Afterwards, it was maybe a 10 minute wait and a table was available. Honestly we noticed a good amount of open tables when we were escorted upstairs to the dining area. The seating was a little cramped and tables were pretty closed together. One wall of seats were tufted while the opposite side were single chairs with a cushion. Menu wise, all your Thai dishes with some extra added. They're not much noodle soup dishes which I like except for the boat noodles. We started off with a bootle of Malbec which was reasonable price. And the som tom (papaya salad) for a starter. Medium spice levels, it was with salted anchovies. Quite tasty on a bed of spring mix versus a wedge of cabbage like most places. It was quite tasty and enjoyed. Entrees, the chicken panang curry medium spice with steamed rice. That was tasty but portion was very small. And lastly the boat noodles medium spice level as well. I love me some boat noodles but it was a little different from what I've had at loads of other places. The broth wasn't as thick and slightly bland. It was fine but I wanted some of the pickle chili which they only had saracha paste and chili flakes. Also an order of the sticky rice. Out of everything, the papaya salad takes the cake. Panang was decent and flavorful but very small. Boat noodle on the other hand was just ok. Nothing major to rave about. The place was quite nice and very intimate in a sense of being close to each other. They were busy with both the dining downstairs as well as upstairs. It's broken down to three dining area with bottom floor which it also house the kitchen. Then you have the little mezzanine area right off the stairs with a couple of seats and then the main upstairs dining area. There's one restroom upstairs. Service was good. Staffers were friendly. Coconut soup is delicious with medium spice and soft tofu. Had you ew ice, nice change from pad Thai, balance of noodles greens and seafood. Restaurant was full and busy but did not feel overly crowded. Service was prompt and efficient with water refills and empty plate pickups at regular intervals. The dumplings were crispy and had this delicious sauce covering them. Devine! We really enjoyed the spring rolls. Fresh and the peanut sauce was delightful. Our entrees consisted of Chicken Pad Thai. Visited Thai District on a busy Thursday night. We ordered the Thai District pot stickers to start with. Really nice ginger flavor and presented in an elongated dish with a little mixed greens and pretty orchid for decoration. For our main course we ordered red curry with pork which was flavorful and not too spicy per our request. Our noodle dish was the Kai Kua noodles with chicken, similar tasting to our usual pad see eew. First time ordering this type of noodles. We enjoyed them very much. A small side of rice to go with the curry to soak up all the juicy flavors was a nice addition. The service was good for a busy night where all the tables were occupied. The decor is typical of the usual Thai restaurants. Seating down stairs is a little tight. However, when seated so close to the next table you get to view what your neighbors are eating and may opt to change your order. There is also upstairs seating. I have yet to be seated there. I only personally tried the salmon, shishito peppers, and the crispy tofu, which were all very good. TL;DR The best Thai food. I can't go to any other place for Thai food. Sweetest staff, delicious food, and beautiful atmosphere. Food: The food was amazing as always. For an appetizer I got the wings. They were slightly spicy from the Thai chili, and they were crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. I got the fried rice with chicken. The best fried rice I've had so far. It's not oily but has the toasted flavor from the wok. The vegetables were also fresh. I got the soft shell crab curry again. The crab legs are perfectly crispy and the soft crab meat is delicious dipped in the spiced curry. I got the tom yum soup again. It is the best tom yum soup. It's balanced, but bursting with flavor. Sour and slightly spicy. Service and Ambiance: Everyone is always so nice. Tip was so kind with recommending me dishes and talking with me so genuinely. I kind of want to keep it a secret so that it doesn't get super crowded here, but also I want this place to thrive, haha. I've been here a couple times now and ordered new dishes each time - every single one has been a banger! Some of my favorites are the lamb osso bucco, the nan kao tod salad, and the Kai kha noodles. Such a hidden gem - at least to me! Although judging by how full it was (we waited about 30 minutes), it's clearly no secret. The restaurant has a moody, colorful vibe that perfectly matches the Thai cuisine and overall theme, and it's located right in a great Long Beach spot. The menu is extensive with so many options that we ended up ordering a variety of dishes just to sample more of it. One of my friends had been here before and highly recommended it. When: Friday 7:30 Parking: Metered parking is free after 6PM- my party of 5 were all able to park on Elm Street. There were lots of easy diagonal spots you can pull into and only walk one block. Ambience: They really lean into their Thai culture and architecture. Buddha's, lanterns, faux candles, a diffuser, red walls and black accents. It was moody and giving almost dungeon vibes. We were sat upstairs amongst many other tables. It was fairly loud indoors. Service: In one word: awful. We sat down and noticed half our plates did not have forks. We were sat down with menus and had to flag someone down to take our order (the person who sat us was not seen the rest of the night). They asked what we wanted to drink. We were not even given a drink menu so we had no idea! They finally gave us drink menus and then we had to flag someone down AGAIN to put our drink and food order in at once. It's like we weren't assigned a waiter or waitress. They also had a hard time understanding if the organic sake i wanted was served cold. They had to ask another worker and the other worker was also confused. Yikes... What I tasted: organic sake- whole bottle for $16. Equivalent to 2 drinks if you drink it yourself so definitely worth it. Crab fried rice- probably my favorite dish. Seasoned well and flavorful. Garden salad- the salad by itself was SALTY! Who wants salty fresh veggies? Not me. Chicken pad Thai- average. Chicken yellow curry- pretty delicious but nothing that knocks it out of the park. Flourless lava cake- gross. It didn't even taste like chocolate and the ice cream on top was green (I assume it's matcha?) but I didn't know you could get a chocolate lava cake wrong until now. Mango sticky rice- the rice was black. The mango wasn't sweet. The flavors were just all wrong. And I'm a sucker for mango sticky rice... sad. Overall thoughts: I really will never return again. I wish I lived closer to this gem of a restaurant. The decor of this place is really beautiful and the servers were attentive. I got the kabocha curry with pork belly since I don't really see pumpkin as an offering in most places. Fantastic! My friend got the drunken noodles which were tasty as well. The one thing I'd say is I got a medium spicy level (they rate from 1-3) on my already spicy dish and my friend, who can barely tolerate anything above mayo, could eat it. I was looking for something for dinner tonight, Friday late so that I could avoid cooking and keep the house freshly clean for the weekend. I found Thai District online and decided to place an order opening the menu. I was immediately greeted by an offer of 20% off coupon by scanning a QR code. I scan the code and immediately received a text with a link saying here's your coupon and then call the restaurant placed my order seven items which included pad Thai, their version of crab Rangoon, some eggrolls pad see yew noodles, a Larb type of salad and some tom Ka soup. Overall about a hundred bux. The coupon 20% coupon would be the icing on the cake for a bill this size. I drove to downtown Long Beach to the restaurant, go in and grab what I am hoping to be a Thai food feast! It's nice inside, two stories, with authentic Thai decor. I step up to the register, tell the man I have a pick up order, let him know I have a coupon ( his frown should have been the tell) He finds my order which was already bagged and sets it in front of me. I show him my phone and he says those coupons are only good for online orders. A bit surprised , I explained to him that nowhere during the process of getting the coupon, does it say ONLINE ONLY. It's only after opening the link which I did at the restaurant does it indicate an option. And I say option because it reads as such with a selector button that only gives you the option to select on line. I very politely explained my position to the gentleman but he refused to honor the coupon. Having not yet paid... I almost ... almost just left without any food at all. But I wanted to have a full experience if I was going to a review. The salad WAS good. The other six items I ordered... I would skip. I'm not going to bash on the food. In fact, it might have even been OK but the experience left such a bad taste in my mouth to begin with, I couldn't even tell. If you've read any of my reviews, you know they all circle around customer service. To start, the kabocha curry I ordered as medium or 2 on spice level, it was perfectly spicy and the kabocha made the curry sweet, but not overwhelming so. I enjoyed it with a side a Jasmine rice and dessert wine from Portugal, which was also sweet! The desserts were very delicious! The churros were made of pandan and came with a pandan dipping sauce! Superb Thai meal! Course 1: Thai District Chicken Wings 6 large crispy wings drizzled with a savory slightly sweet sauce served with mixed lettuce. I wrapped bits of chicken in the leaves and went to town. They also had fried Kaffir Lime leaves. It was a little chewy at first, but I remembered that hill tribes in Northern Thailand promote eating leaves and the fibers are good for you, so I ate my Kaffir Leaves. Course 2: Pad Thai. It is my standard try for Thai restaurants. They gave me a choice of proteins. I chose to upgrade to the crispy fried pork belly because the region does fried meats well. I was not disappointed. The crispy skin and flavorful meat with just the right amount of fat was a perfect complement to the fresh lime over sweet-savory Pad Thai al dente noodles. I loved the light fried eggs scrambled and served with plump fresh bean sprouts. Dessert: Mango Sticky Rice. But it is an elevated Mango Sticky Purpose Royal Glutinous Rice, steamed warm. It is accompanied by mango that was ripe and still had a bit of tart. Coconut palm seed was a sweeter element and served with a light and refreshing sorbet. Service was immaculate. Rest in peace to this once good Thai Restaurant. They're not going out of business, the food just sucks now. I used to be able to depend on Thai District for quick, hot and delicious Thai selections in Downtown Long Beach. Despite only having ordered takeout and never enjoyed in the restaurant, I knew I could count on Thai District to provide food to my door in the same condition as if they cooked and served it in my own home- fresh and tasteful. Unfortunately, management seems to have changed and so did their quality menu items. One dish in particular really was the most disappointing. The past two times I've ordered here, the food was poorly cooked but most restaurants serve bad food, if we're being honest. What provoked me to leave this review wasn't the bad food but it was the was the laughable amount of meat that was included in the Green Bean Prikking with Shrimp. A $24 dish and they gave me 6 shrimp (photo attached). That is a joke. It's one thing to serve bad food, it's another to play in my face. Shrimp isn't even that expensive of a meat- would it have killed you to include a few more? Even 10 is unacceptable but 6 shrimp? Absurd. They charged me $24 for a plate of green beans. The situation was the same with the Pad Thai. Scarce amount of chicken but tasted decent. However, it was not good enough to order here as opposed to the other abundant and delicious Thai restaurants in Long Beach. The spring rolls are... odd. The filling is somehow chalky, flavorless, and mushy. Next on the menu was the potstickers which also had a bland filling. They were clearly bought frozen and thrown into a deep fryer. It tasted more like Indian curry than Thai curry which was not what we were hoping for. The meat in it was pretty good though and there was a solid amount. The rice was pretty good. We ordered all of our dishes to be a spice level of 3 out of 4 but it was not spicy at all. Like literally not spicy. That all being said, space was nicely decorated and the restaurant is deceivingly large. May come back to try their more basic dishes rather than specialties. read more
