For a strip mall restaurant within walking distance I was very pleasantly surprised first by how beautifully the small dining room was decorated but also by the freshness and quality of both the food and service. The absolute BEST sit down Thai restaurant in the area. We have eaten in Thai restaurants in NYC that don't come close. Food quality is always consistent and delicious. Thaiwat serves authentic Thai dishes in the Reading area. My barometer test is Pad Thai and always end up ordering this. The curry dishes are delicious as well but be careful with the spice level as even the medium is very spicy. Service is also excellent- where we ordered takeout last time and car broke down. My wife and I just had a wonderful meal that we got via contactless pick-up. We started with Tulip Dumplings which were very tasty. My wife had the Thai Crab Cakes which she absolutely loved. Chicken pad thai is extremely on point here, solid portion sizes too. Their friendly staff and quiet relaxed ambiance in the restaurant make the experience that much better imo. Only downside is that it's pretty pricey but this seems to be the norm at the majority of Thai places not located in/near a major city. Otherwise I'd come here multiple times a week. Extremely love the decor. Very authentically Thai. They even have an honorarium in remembrance of the late Thai king on display - very Thai, indeed. I got the dumplings. At first, I was disappointed by its size. However, I judged too soon because it was very very full and filling. It was also very good. Next, I got the salmon basil which was also very filling, heart, and delicious. Finally, I got the mung bean custard for dessert. Thaiwat has above average Thai food. Its one of the few places in Berks to get a healthy vegetarian dinner. Also, it's byob, which is great! The dining area always seems to be on the cold side. Have been living in Berks county for about a year now and as a New Yorker, I love to try new food. Randomly came in with my friend to eat. Let me start off by saying the architecture and atmosphere of this location is beautiful. Very Buddhist style and felt like you were in another country... So we decided to go with the Calamari for the appetizer and this was so good! The sauce it came with was delicious. A sweet and sour peanut sauce to perfection. For our entrees I was so indecisive between pad Thai, seafood and DUCK!. Let me tell you, I never had duck and I decided to go for it.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT was the best DECISION EVER! This DUCK WAS AMAZING. It was nice and crunchy with lots of meat. I was so scare but because of this, I can say I want more DUCK.! The plate was garnished with a orange/red curry sauce with tomatoes on top and a side of jasmine rice. It was about 18 dollars but the plate was TRULY WORTH IT. My girlfriend order the Basil Thai rice which was also good but not better than the duck. Overall the service was amazing. There is a story behind the opening of the location. The Asian food scene in Reading makes me want to cry. Coming from Miami, where every Asian restaurant was some crappy ghettofusion of Cuban, Chinese, and sushi, I didn't think it could really get that much worse. It can and does, right here in Reading, PA. Thaiwat is exactly what its name implies. Not memorable. "Hey you know that thai place?" "Thai wat?" "Yeah I dont remember the name either" My friend and I made an extremely simple takeout order last week. One drunken noodle and one pad thai. These are dishes that any halfway decent thai restaurant should be able to prepare at least moderately well and as such are a relatively stable benchmark of my evaluation of a Thai place. Both dishes were bitterly disappointing. My friend's veggie pad thai tasted like cardboard. There was little flavor at all and the noodles were some variety of thin noodle that neither of us have ever seen used in pad thai. As for my drunken noodle, it was a small step up from the pad thai but not by much. The noodles were overcooked and limp as were the few beef slices mixed in. I think I had like 7 beef slices in my dish. Thanks for splurging on me in the ingredients department, guys. Will not be back. read more

I gave this place a try on Saturday evening after Rice Modern Thai turned us away. This was my first experience with Thai food. I liked it. Service was a bit slow, especially considering only the (five or so) booths were occupied and the rest of the restaurant was empty. I tried the Pad Thai and my girlfriend got something which I don't remember, lol. She said the portions were definitely bigger at Thai Cuisine behind Boscov's in Muhlenberg, which we'll try next. This was my first experience with Thai food, and I was only slightly impressed. The food had good flavor, but being my first time with Thai, I haven't anything to compare it to. I had the Pad Thai and Crispy Rolls. My server barely spoke English and the hostess was very distant, to the point that communication was uncomfortable. Not good for a dining out experience. I actually overheard a neighboring table complaining about the service when one member of their party hadn't received her food when the others had. I noticed that the place was less than 1/3 full at a little after 7:00 on a Saturday evening. I have to agree with Ashton G. regarding the price for portion - too expensive for what you get. When a transplated West Coaster complains about the price when eating on the East Coast, something is definately wrong! read more

I went there for dinner with 3 friends and they let us sit for 3 hours and didn't bother us to leave. That was pretty wonderful. I've been here several times and the food is always excellent, plentiful, and delicious. The flavors are excellent and it tastes like they make it with care. We get take out regularly (3 times per month minimum) and always look forward to it. I typically order a curry dish or the drunken noodles (be sure to request extra spicy or else the spice will be muted to cater to local preference). My significant other gets the pad Thai. We also usually order the crispy rolls and the mango sticky rice. I don't necessarily recommend eating in -- some tables are fairly close together, and they lack a liquor license. read more

Went for dinner. Inside is nice but small. Seems like there are not enough staff, service fairly slow. Drunken noodles, thai basil were delicious! I mean wow! However, was not full, portions way too small for a dinner. Had to eat junk after getting home. I had the Massaman Curry and it was amazing! It could have been a bit spicier for my taste, but the taste was incredible. We also had the spring rolls. The veggies were fresh and the dipping sauce was much better than any duck sauce I have tried. Such a cute and small place in Berks County. Usually do take out but I have eaten there once. Cute decor for the location and the size of the restaurant. The only place in this area to really hit that Thai food craving. I should probably give this place three stars or below just because I got sick the first 3 times I had it but those could just be isolated incidents (or my bad luck). I usually get the Thai iced tea and the drunken noodles since they seem to hit all those cravings. I've recently tried the penang curry and would definitely have it again. My friend LOVES their chu che duck (?) and although I don't eat duck, I'm told it's excellent. Cons: If you do take out you might not be getting your moneys worth in regards to quantity. The iced tea is usually 3/4's the cup and the dishes are definitely not as big as when you have it there for the same price. All in all, not the best and definitely not the worst. Great hometown Thai place... Atmosphere is inviting with Thai traditional decor. Their food offerings consist of the standard American Thai favorites, like pad Thai, drunken noodles, curries, etc. You won't be able to get some of the authentic Northeast/ Northern dishes that the big city Thai restaurants offer, but they certainly do the staples well. I've only been here once, but their food is pretty good. It's been a few weeks, so unfortunately I can't remember the names of everything but it's standard thai restaurant fare. Seafood soup with a coconut broth was good. Glass noodle salad was delicious and seemed never ending. My friend and I split a boneless "Curry Ducky" and we basically cleaned the plate. Moist and not greasy with a nice flavor. I'd like to go back to try different things, but overall I was quite pleased. Service is friendly and prompt. First off, GREAT WATER! I'm a huge water snob and that is one of the first things that contributes to my restaurant experience. I have never tried Thai cuisine before, but I had a wonderful experience here! For my entree I ordered the Chicken Swimming Rama which was essentially thin chicken breast over raw spinach in a peanut sauce (also something that I have never tried before). Our food arrived quickly (but not suspiciously quick) and was hot and fresh. I also received a side of sticky rice that went great with the peanut sauce which was tasty and not overbearing at all. The Jasmine tea had a great scent but could have been more flavorful, as it was a little bland. But still, the entire experience was very delightful, especially in regards to the service. My water glass was never empty and everyone was sweet and attentive! The prices were by no means bad, but I wouldn't call it a bargain. Overall, I would definitely go back again and would recommend to anyone who is interested in trying Thai or in trying new things! read more

Tell her you heard about the restaurant on Yelp. You will get authentic TASTY Thai food at Thai Cuisine.
