Never has the food been bland, and sometimes while it's a tiny bit spicier than my mouth would like, it tastes amazing! Certain dishes will be greasy and some are intended to be spicy, so understanding what you're ordering is important. I guess I'm just looking for the authentic Chinese food experience, and that's what I feel like I get at this place. The owner is a great guy! He remembers us even when we haven't ordered in months. I used to eat here quite a bit and its just going down hill. The sweet and sour chicken was grease logged. The boneless ribs were over cooked and chewy (my dog even passed). The rice was lukewarm and gritty. My previous meal was just as bad but I thought maybe I caught a bad one but it seems to be the norm. Don't get me started on the egg roll. I don't know why I keep trying this place when it routinely grossed me out. It's close. That's my excuse I guess, but no more. The fried rice is a weird yellow color, the egg rolls aren't fresh, and any of the sauces-sweet and sour, coconut, etc all taste like they were just dumped out of a can. This last order was IT for me. My chicken pieces tonight were dry and had black spots in them. Needless to say I didn't eat it, and I hope I'm not sick on the few bites I had. After dining out at a different local Chinese restaurant a few days ago and having a disappointing experience, it was a breath of fresh air to order the same food at No.1 Chinese Restaurant and enjoying what we ate. We ordered the Pork Lo Mein, Orange Chicken (requested crispy & sweet, not spicy) with roast pork fried rice, Fried Crab Rangoon, Egg roll, and Wings with Plain Fried Rice. I was so happy that the Fried Crab Rangoon came with sweet & sour sauce so that I could dip my egg roll into it. At the other Chinese restaurant, they had no idea what sweet & sour sauce was and offered me soy sauce and hot sauce instead. The Pork Lo Mein was a big hit with Joy. She was happy with the amount given even though she ordered a small. She noted it had plenty of vegetables, good flavor, and was not too oily. The only downside was that the pork seemed slightly overcooked and was rubbery in taste. The Wings were juicy, well fried, fresh, and made to order -- which takes about 20 minutes to prepare. The only issue was that it lacked flavor -- could not taste any seasoning such as salt or pepper or any marination. The Plain Fried rice was just that, plain, yellow, and slightly soggy. The Pork Fried rice was just average, nothing to write home about. The Orange Chicken was crispy, cooked perfectly, had lots of sauce, seemed fresh, but may of had too much breading and tasted more on the sour side than sweet. The Fried Crab Rangoon was crispy and had sufficient filling. One of the better fried crab rangoons I've had in awhile, but still has room for improvement. The Egg roll was packed, fried good and tasted fine. I was very pleased that this Chinese restaurant had fountain drinks and free refills. We will be back again to try new dishes at this restaurant in the future. read more

No. 1 sure got their name right. Great Chinese American food. In the three years I've lived in the area I've tried all the locals aaaand... that's exactly what this has become. Good fresh food done right and topped off with excellent service. I haven't had anything from here that I didn't like. Not necessarily a negative but I wish they had a steady delivery person. No. 1 has always been good, whether it's take out or eat in. This is one of the few Chinese places where you'd actually *want* to sit down and eat. It's not the typical place with boxes of supplies mounded up against a wall right in the dining area. It's clean and comfortable. Call it what you will.. Singapore noodles, mei fun, etc but IMHO this place has the best you can find in Berks. I've never had anything "bad" from here.. some things I just didn't care for but everything was always prepared well. I think the only downside to this place is they serve Pepsi products, and sometimes the "hot" tea isn't hot at all. In some Chinese places I get the feeling the owners could care less about me or what they're doing. NOT at this place. I travel to Reading regularly for work. I could write a review for 100 places there. But today I'm here to signal boost for No. 1, because man have I been disappointed in their competition. Most Chinese in Reading is bad. I eat a ton of great Chinese in Philadelphia, but Reading has a bunch of pretenders to the throne. Fortune Cafe is fine if you're desperate, but No. 1 Chinese really is number one! They're closed on Monday's, which is weird, but I get it. The Mongolian beef had a whole onion (it seemed) in the container but the flavors were spot on and the meat perfectly cooked. The meat was not tough nor was it undercooked. The flavors were complex enough with a slight spicy-ness. Spot-On! Also wanted to try the sweet and spicy chicken so we got the small. Was packaged separately and just the right size. We were very disappointed in the food in our most recent order. Not only have the prices gone up significantly, the quality and flavor of the food is sorely lacking. We ordered shrimp and chicken pad Thai and steamed dumplings. The pad thai's had very little shrimp and chicken and were very dry. The dumplings were dry as well and very doughy. At first glance, it's a typical "Chinese take-out in a strip mall"-type restaurant, with better-than-average seating and decor. It is very clean, the staff is very friendly and attentive, and the prices are pretty good. We almost always eat in, but I think most of their business is take-out or delivery. Food-wise, they are great. I have tried a variety of dishes, and most I considered to be very good. They have a large selection of Chinese food, and a small number of Thai dishes. I get Chicken Pad Thai about 1/2 the time I go, as it's very good. Their General Tso's Chicken is so-so (they use chili sauce instead of whole red chilis), their Mongolian Beef is delicious, and their Egg Rolls are very good. I did not care for their Bourbon Chicken, but their Chow Mein and Mei Fun are both good. The quality of the food far exceeds the big buffet places, so if you want quality over quantity, this is the place to go. read more
