The food was very good and came hot and quickly. The wait staff was accommodating and kind. We had the General's chicken and the boneless ribs and were very pleased. Everything was great!! Nice quiet restaurant that was neat and clean. read more

By far the worst Chinese food I've ever had. We frequented them some time ago but not for a while. They must have changed their kitchen people. It was dreadful. For example the Kung Pao Chicken had nothing by American-style veggies; nothing close to Asian. The Spring and Egg rolls were dreadful. Will never order from them again. read more

The food was too spicy, very greasy with no flavor. The shrimp lo mein and sweet and sour shrimp are very small shrimp. I'm never returning!

The food is amazing and the service is also great. I can't understand how others say the food went down hill. My family and I have been ordering from this place for many years. Never has the food been bland, and sometimes while it's a tiny bit spicier than my mouth would like, it tastes amazing! Certain dishes will be greasy and some are intended to be spicy, so understanding what you're ordering is important. I guess I'm just looking for the authentic Chinese food experience, and that's what I feel like I get at this place. The owner is a great guy! He remembers us even when we haven't ordered in months. We have never dined in, but I really feel like for the size and location the ambiance is really nice. read more

My family and I truly enjoyed this restaurant. Not only was the food warm and delicious, but it also arrived in ample time to our table. The staff is so friendly and inviting here, not to mention, they stayed open on Christmas day! We enjoyed every aspect of our experience here and would recommend this spot to anyone and everyone! read more

Good quality and fair prices for tasty Szechuan ma po tofu which is my favorite. Helpful owner assisted me to dial up the spice to my liking. Recommended. read more

I don't know why I keep trying this place when it routinely grossed me out. It's close. That's my excuse I guess, but no more. The fried rice is a weird yellow color, the egg rolls aren't fresh, and any of the sauces-sweet and sour, coconut, etc all taste like they were just dumped out of a can. This last order was IT for me. My chicken pieces tonight were dry and had black spots in them. Needless to say I didn't eat it, and I hope I'm not sick on the few bites I had. I'm not usually a harsh reviewer, but don't charge me $13 for black chicken. I just can't find any redeeming qualities to this place. read more

I used to eat here quite a bit and its just going down hill. The sweet and sour chicken was grease logged. The boneless ribs were over cooked and chewy (my dog even passed). The rice was lukewarm and gritty. My previous meal was just as bad but I thought maybe I caught a bad one but it seems to be the norm. Don't get me started on the egg roll. I took one bite and tossed it in the trash. Probably wont be going back EVER... For the price if I want Chinese food I'll go to the buffet in Lancaster... read more

Food ok but pricey for what you get. Not a good value. Drove a ways to get there because of higher rating but didn't find it worth it. Likely will try another place next time I'm craving Chinese food. read more

Exceptional taste in all dishes, cooked very well, would recommend! The General TSO chicken dish is a personal recommendation, the egg rolls are just as tasteful as they are great looking with a perfect crust and evenly dispersed filling! read more

Great food, good prices. Found this spot off Yelp reviews and wow so happy I gave it a try. I had chicken fried rice and my partner got the lomein noodles with shrimp and beef. We also had appetizers- cream cheese Rangoon's are a must, super yummy almost order a second order to go. read more

Very good food and friendly staff. Love the steak and scallops. Coconut chicken is delish. Curry chicken is good. So far I've loved everything I've tried. And in a convenient location too. read more

Clean and friendly. Rice was undercooked. I ordered fried rice and brown rice. They were hard. Might try again as they are close by.

After dining out at a different local Chinese restaurant a few days ago and having a disappointing experience, it was a breath of fresh air to order the same food at No.1 Chinese Restaurant and enjoying what we ate. We ordered the Pork Lo Mein, Orange Chicken (requested crispy & sweet, not spicy) with roast pork fried rice, Fried Crab Rangoon, Egg roll, and Wings with Plain Fried Rice. I was so happy that the Fried Crab Rangoon came with sweet & sour sauce so that I could dip my egg roll into it. At the other Chinese restaurant, they had no idea what sweet & sour sauce was and offered me soy sauce and hot sauce instead. The Pork Lo Mein was a big hit with Joy. She was happy with the amount given even though she ordered a small. She noted it had plenty of vegetables, good flavor, and was not too oily. The only downside was that the pork seemed slightly overcooked and was rubbery in taste. The Wings were juicy, well fried, fresh, and made to order -- which takes about 20 minutes to prepare. The only issue was that it lacked flavor -- could not taste any seasoning such as salt or pepper or any marination. The Plain Fried rice was just that, plain, yellow, and slightly soggy. The Pork Fried rice was just average, nothing to write home about. The Orange Chicken was crispy, cooked perfectly, had lots of sauce, seemed fresh, but may of had too much breading and tasted more on the sour side than sweet. The Fried Crab Rangoon was crispy and had sufficient filling. One of the better fried crab rangoons I've had in awhile, but still has room for improvement. The Egg roll was packed, fried good and tasted fine. I was very pleased that this Chinese restaurant had fountain drinks and free refills. We will be back again to try new dishes at this restaurant in the future. read more

I ordered the Red Curry Chicken. I did NOT like it all. It had no seasoning. I had to remake the entire dish (even though I didn't have the right ingredients) because it was so bland. The appearance is just how it taste like milk with unseasoned chicken. It was a sad let down because I was looking forward to a flavorful Thai dish with a flavorful curry base. Consistent quality across the menu and polite and professional employees. Never disappoints!

No. 1 sure got their name right. Great Chinese American food. In the three years I've lived in the area I've tried all the locals aaaand... that's exactly what this has become. Good fresh food done right and topped off with excellent service. I haven't had anything from here that I didn't like. Not necessarily a negative but I wish they had a steady delivery person. I've asked every time I've ordered and they've had someone maybe five percent of the time. It's still worth the trip! read more

This place was a complete find by chance based on Yelp reviews. I cannot say enough about how wonderful they are!! We decided to eat in and watched them interact with every customer and it seemed that they knew literally everyone that walked through the door! It seems like most orders are take out, but we stayed and they treated us very well. I almost wish I lived here so I could go back!! Food was absolutely spot on! read more

The name says it all, if you're up for excellent Chinese take out, this is where you should order from. We've got several more convenient options closer to our home, but always order from here. The Singapore mei fun and pad Thai are excellent as is the general tsao, but order it sauce on the side so it stays crispy. read more

The plain lo mein is everything you ever wanted- all noodles nothing else, lightly sauced not heavy, big portion! Love the garlic chicken- the meat isnt tiny minced pieces its big thin tender slices! Pork fried rice is perfect- the flavor shows they keep their grill clean. General tso is more chicken than breading and isnt that popcorn chicken just tossed in sauce- its real chunks of white meat. Quick pick up for take out orders. read more

I've eaten here often. Good solid consistently served food. I like that they do Thai Food here! I had a red curry Thai dish here that was very delicious! They are friendly here as well. I would most definitely eat here again! read more

No. 1 has always been good, whether it's take out or eat in. This is one of the few Chinese places where you'd actually *want* to sit down and eat. It's not the typical place with boxes of supplies mounded up against a wall right in the dining area. It's clean and comfortable. Call it what you will.. Singapore noodles, mei fun, etc but IMHO this place has the best you can find in Berks. I've never had anything "bad" from here.. some things I just didn't care for but everything was always prepared well. I think the only downside to this place is they serve Pepsi products, and sometimes the "hot" tea isn't hot at all. In some Chinese places I get the feeling the owners could care less about me or what they're doing. NOT at this place. I usually see the owner doing everything from taking orders to cleaning the tables and has always been very friendly. Great job! read more

Drove out of my way based on the reviews. Regrettably, portions were tiny probably because I ate in. Definitely would have been larger in to-go containers, especially the soup. No more than several decent size pieces of chicken with the vegetables. Flavor was just ok, but had to add too much soy to give it some taste. Lunch special, soup, and tip - almost $20. Ouch. I travel to Reading regularly for work. I could write a review for 100 places there. But today I'm here to signal boost for No. 1, because man have I been disappointed in their competition. Most Chinese in Reading is bad. I eat a ton of great Chinese in Philadelphia, but Reading has a bunch of pretenders to the throne. Fortune Cafe is fine if you're desperate, but No. 1 Chinese really is number one! They're closed on Monday's, which is weird, but I get it. I had some on Sunday and wanted more today, so now I'm kind of mad, but I have to give them their respect regardless. I have yet to not like anything I've ordered from there. Get the Rangoons! read more

Awesome food. Hopefully they open soon. Just drove by in hopes of buying some food and it's closed till further notice.

Only a time or two have we ordered from here. The first time, my husband and his sons didn't like it. But I did. The second time was pretty steady for me but they seemed to like their dinners better. It was ok. Def not the best I've had and def not the worst. read more

Solid 3.75 -4 Stars. Would give the place four but I wanted more veggies like broccoli and carrots in my beef. The place is clean and well kept. I'd eat at the store location but this time we got takeout. The restaurant is in a shopping center on the corner next to a bagel joint. The staff and I didn't interact much but they seemed ok. The Mongolian beef had a whole onion (it seemed) in the container but the flavors were spot on and the meat perfectly cooked. The meat was not tough nor was it undercooked. The flavors were complex enough with a slight spicy-ness. Spot-On! Also wanted to try the sweet and spicy chicken so we got the small. Was packaged separately and just the right size. Had the Crab Rangoon, well done. Crispy and not chewy. We will be back. See photos. I took many of them! read more

We were very disappointed in the food in our most recent order. Not only have the prices gone up significantly, the quality and flavor of the food is sorely lacking. We ordered shrimp and chicken pad Thai and steamed dumplings. The pad thai's had very little shrimp and chicken and were very dry. The dumplings were dry as well and very doughy. For the cost of $28, this was too much money for sub par food. read more
