Seeing the sign advertised in the window about a buffet option and hibachi, we decided to try a new place... Upon entering- we were greeted promptly and seated at a table (not at hibachi grill) in the empty establishment. We were also informed that the buffet is only a Monday through Friday option- until 3pm, so not available at 330pm through it was nowhere posted about time/availability that was called to our attention (visit was on Friday, but the buffet line was clean and cold, not seemingly used that day.) The ambiance and decor is quite striking and appealing, but every surface we touched had a sticky texture/feel to it- menus, table, and table displays. A wait staff placed utensils on the open menu I was reading and then face down, touching the sticky table for the other person in my party. (Gross.) We requested chopsticks instead, as they weren't even offered to us. The menu has so many pages of options to choose from, not counting the items listed on the table displays- which is honestly a bit overwhelming for a first time visitor. Even after communicating it was out first time visiting, the staff offered no personal introductions, guidance, or suggestions. There was no inquiry on allergies or anything leaving us feeling somewhat overwhelmed and anxious about the experience. So we wound up selecting familiar foods that were advertised on the (misspelled) table display- two bowls of Ramen. (We're both big fans of Ramen, especially the marinated soft boiled eggs.) It took so long for two bowls of Ramen to come to our table- over 30 minutes. The ramen noodles were thick and had a heavy doughy texture- much like a very thick spaghetti in broth. The eggs were fried/scrambled and laid on top. (Both highly disappointing and detracted even more from the dish.) The broth was just average. Neither I nor the other individual in my party are likely to return any time soon, as we are familiar with another local restaurant that has a higher quality experience and exceptional tasting food, local to there that would be our first choice. There was a man with glasses who had a seemingly disgruntled attitude from the moment we arrived and verbally corrected another staff in front of our table, while standing at a distance away. This was a poor example of leadership and left us feeling uncomfortable and feeling bad for anyone who would have to work with/for him- especially since he reprimanded/called out other staff while his own customer service was significantly worse! (Hopefully he was just having an off day, and that's not typical.) As a result, I can't say we will be returning for multiple reasons. (If staffing attitude changes are made it may make the experience more pleasant and digestible.) read more

My husband had been ordering & raving about the Coconut Shrimp dish (with no green beans) so I figured I'd try this place out too. Ordered through UberEats since I had a coupon and here's my experience: I recommend going directly through the Mikura site because UberEats adds about $5 extra to each item. It came with 6 pieces. -We Happy Roll: It was a hard choice between this and the Mango Delight Roll. So glad I chose this because it was FANTASTIC. I was afraid it would be too spicy but it was a good balance between sweet from the mango and spicy from the sauce and the yellowtail. It came with 10 pieces. Overall very satisfied. Cannot conscientiously recommend this place to anyone An hour and a half long wait. Owner seems like he was running everything from cooking, taking orders, etc etc. So we were fine with waiting. Appetizer was fine. The sauce was too salty. Dragon and Phoenix looked different from the usual. It was very brown. Very salty. My peking duck was cool to temp. Service was slow - waited more than 15 minutes after being seated to have our drink order taken. Then another server came over and tried to take our drink order. I saw that Mikura was getting some negative reviews on Google so I want to share my experience. I absolutely love this place. I have never been to an Asian restaurant quite like it. They serve many different types of eastern food: Sushi, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese BBQ. You really can't go wrong here. I love how you can get their crab Rangoons (truly amazing) and a few rolls of sushi. I don't drink but they also have an extensive bar menu. We always end up eating too much when we visit this place. There are so many things on the menu that I always want to try. Would not order from them but instead go see them in person. They have a great outdoor area in the summer. I'm absolutely shocked at their 3.5 star review. Floored. I'm one of the pickiest people I know about "good" food. Rather than wine, I'll point out some of my favorite things about Mikura: 1. The owner is one of the nicest people I've ever met and he might actually live there bc he is ALWAYS there. He will remember you. He has manners and grace. He's a good dude. 2. The food is fresh, tasty, and consistent. 3. The menu is huge. Korean, Chinese, Thai, Japanese- they got it and they do each pretty solid. 4. For a charge they will do make your food however you want it. As someone who has struggled with finding food to eat when eating out, this is huge. 5. Service is good and they usually keep some good Asian beers on hand. 6. It's a very clean restaurant. Back of the house and front or the house. Minor things to know: 1. I finally got the scoop on this place after hearing about the changes from my colleagues who ordered out frequently from this location under its previous owners. Formerly China King in the little strip across from the Madison Wynnewood apartments, Mikura is now owned the innovators who run (and have revamped) China Penn. They invested thousands to renovate and update the space and have filled it with natural light and color, enhanced with glossy dark wood and fancy LED lighting. They moved the door and now plan to have a wine bar in the space near the former entrance. But it is still BYOB for the time being. :-) Reasons I am happy to see the changes: * Hugely expanded menu includes Chinese, Thai, and Japanese, including hibachi and a sushi bar. * Friendly and cool young owners who remember you and your preferences. * Many more vegan choices, including veg chicken which can be added to many dishes -- love how there is a list of many entrees (on the Chinese menu) and you can choose vegetables or tofu ($9), veg chicken ($10), and other meats for $11 and $12. This removes the v-tax whereby vegans pay the same for a dish which has the most expensive elements removed. * New additions to the menu such as crispy pancakes with peanut sauce, yummmm, as well as lettuce wraps (which I am sure they would make with tofu or veg chicken). * Very vegan-friendly elements carried over from the China Penn menu such as Thai Spicy Tofu (my husband's favorite) and five different curries. I honestly don't know how they manage such a huge menu. * Brown rice is available for a little extra. * Outside tables. Lee the owner tells me his veg chicken is specially made in Taiwan from tofu, and any dish you order with it is a BIG portion, we noticed. The moment you walk into Mikura, you'll forget it's located in the bowels of a strip mall. Seriously, whoever was hired to design the interior of this restaurant simply nailed it. This place has a modern, chic feel, and remarkably, it was able rock an abundance of fluorescent, neon lights without looking tacky. You'll be happy to know that the food matches the quality of the decor - most of the time. You see, it's fairly obvious when they switch chefs. The consistency in each dish on a week to week basis is questionable at best. It really all depends who's working that particular day. I've ordered the same dish on three separate occasions, and each time it comes out noticeably different. The good news is each iteration was still delicious. The bad news is, this might not always be the case (maybe I was just lucky?). This is definitely an Asian restaurant where it will benefit you to DINE-IN. We all know we have that go-to seedy Chinese/Japanese/sushi place where we order take-out when we don't feel like cooking. I had the pleasure of dining at Mikura, an Asian fusion restaurant serving traditional Chinese, Japanese, sushi and Thai dishes. This restaurant has a great atmosphere and some delicious food. We walked in were greeted and promptly seated. Being that it was an early dinner on a Wednesday the restaurant was pretty much empty. Their take out however was busy with a steady flow of hungry patrons. Our waitress came over and took our drink order and upon her return our appetizer order. We decided on the Vietnamese egg rolls and a Garden salad with an orange ginger dressing. Upon receiving the salad the waitress took our entree order. I ordered the Peking duck which I was told would take longer to arrive compared to the tempura chicken, which was fine with me. The appetizer and salad arrived and the presentation was superb. The egg rolls were deep fried shells with sausage and vegetables inside. The shell was nice a flaky, not greasy at all. It was served piping hot with a mild chili sauce. The filling was not to overwhelming and the taste of the sausage complimented the sauce and the vegetables inside. The salad was served nice and cold, it was a simple Iceberg lettuce with shredded carrots. The dressing was a wonderfully made orange ginger with the right balance of both ingredients. The tempura chicken came out first served over a bed of tempura vegetables. The chicken was juicy and cooked just right. The tempura batter was light and crispy. The dish came out warm not piping hot. Which said to me that they cooked it to soon and let it sit while my duck order was still being prepared. About 10 minutes after receiving the first entree the duck came out. The duck was de-boned and sliced thin, served over a bed of shredded lettuce. It was served with Chinese pancakes (which honestly to me were just folded warm tortillas) and a sweet and tart barbecue sauce. The skin of the duck was crispy while the meat was still juicy. The taste of the duck was fresh well cooked and served hot. I made what I would call a duck taco and had my first bite. The tortilla and sauce took something away from the flavor of the duck. The duck itself was sweet and was surprisingly free of fat. Though you could taste the fattiness in the meat telling me that the chef knew what he was doing. I was able to eat half and saved the rest for later. Overall it was a nice change from the average Chinese food restaurant. The service was fast, the food was good and the prices were reasonable. I would recommend this restaurant and if you want a good peaking duck this place is a must. read more

The atmosphere is really fun here, and the waitresses were very nice. The sushi chef was chatting with people at the bar and seemed super friendly. It's not as good as Tokyo, but if you're looking for a different menu in the area it's definitely worth a try. But DON'T get the seaweed salad. I love this stuff, but theirs has a funky taste and a lot of hard pieces. The rolls were pretty fresh, and the variety is good, however a lot of the rolls are spicy.
