Their spicy dishes aren't really that spicy and the American palate can handle them - that isn't a critique at all. If they could make the spicy dishes spicy like sichuan dishes most people in the area could not handle it, needless to say I'm a return customer and will continue frequenting them. With how close Great Wall is to me, it's a bit surprising I don't eat here on a weekly basis. I suppose it's the health-conscious, more mature me making that decision. As it stands, I eat here maybe twice a year? But when I do, the experience is magical. Absence, as they say, makes the girth of my waist grow fatter and my physical features exceedingly grotesque. This place has just been so damn deliciously consistent. While Tokyo Hibachi and Zhuang's Garden have seen their quality steadily nosedive, Great Wall tastes just as good now as it did the first time I tried it all those years ago. The hot & sour soup is head and shoulders above any other Chinese restaurants' offerings in a 10 mile radius. Now even though I live a few blocks away, I'd drive, well, 10 miles just to have this soup. It has that perfect gloopy, almost gelatinous consistency. This is a gross comparison, but it's almost mucousy? But super flavorful mucous with secret Chinese spices, like MSG. It's so thick, in fact, that you can use it as an impromptu sauce on white rice or lo mein. Perhaps even mei fun if you're feeling adventurous. Great Wall one of the growing number of Chinese restaurants to move away from those foldable white cardboard containers. You know, the ones that everyone eats out of in movies when they're working late at the office. It's so welcome to see those rectangular plastic containers that stack easier and - perhaps most importantly - are microwave safe. Ever put one of those old containers in the microwave, forgetting they have that thin metal handle and nearly explode your microwave and burn the house down? Yeah, not ideal. I have to emphasize the lo mein, a fan favorite. There's something that sets it apart, and I think it's a hint of sautéed garlic. Also they fry off the noodles a bit more, allowing them to absorb all the flavor from the wok. Nothing's worse than bland lo mein. I can't even order it at some places anymore because it's my favorite and they've nearly ruined it for me. Luckily Great Wall has restored my faith. My other go-tos are the moo goo gai pan (a relatively healthy chicken & vegetable dish) and Szechuan chicken (when I want some extra spice). Parking can be tricky since it's right on Penn Ave. West Reading is pretty much back in full gear, so street parking fills up fast, especially in the evenings. The greedy owners of the parking lot across the street would rather have spots go to waste than let people park there and enjoy the downtown atmosphere (unless they pay premium for a parking pass, that is). Fortunately I have never run into any rudeness from the employees. Perhaps it's due to the Asian connection. Even though I'm super American, sometimes I pretend to struggle with the English language so the staff of Chinese restaurants accept me as their own. Big Mistake! $78.23 for buffet-quality, take-out Chinese- this place has got some gall. Pineapple Chicken looked more like curry- runny, bright yellow, just sweet. Beef & Scallops- milky, flavorless, snot-like gravy. Sesame Beef, better- but still a disappointment. Beef Chow Fun noodles, smashed into a plastic takeout dish, it was like trying to scoop out a giant wad of paste onto your plate. It felt like everything was Cantonese style, no heat, no peppers, no rich brown sauce. Just that slime that comes with Chicken Chow Mein, no matter what the dish. The compliment is that each dish had a good variety & amount of vegetables- that staple of Chinese cuisine is becoming hard to find. Still, there were too many misses & not enough flavor (even with all the salt) to justify a positive review or the expensive tab. We bought no drinks, no egg rolls or appetizers, wasn't given any sauce packets. $78.23 is a lot even for the variety we ordered. read more

Depending on what you order or when you order, the food is a hit or miss. In the first photo, we have General Tso chicken and pork fried rice (which was ordered on a different day than the other photos). This meal was really good and made well. I was pleased. Now, the other 2 photos are of a meal I ordered on a prior date--Sweet and Sour Chicken with white rice and an egg roll. The chicken and egg roll were visibly over fried. The chicken was hard, dry, and not edible. I didn't even try the egg roll, as it was rock hard. The meal was expensive too, so I was not happy with the service. Overall, I will say that the Great Wall is pricier than other Chinese Restaurants in Berks County. The food is generally good and they deliver to most places. I would not say they're the best around as there are better options with more quality and flavor. read more

Horrible Customer Service. Lady on the phone messed up our order. We asked for chicken and broccoli with no CHICKEN and guess what, all we got was chicken. I decided to call back, and as a business I was hoping they would exchange it but she made us KEEP it and said you had to pay for the CORRECT order. Every-time I order , I decide to order for a bunch of people and I was very unhappy with the service. The food? I'd give it 4 stars. They literally fill half of the container with meat, which I haven't found at any other Chinese restaurants. Boneless spare ribs, sesame chicken, bourbon chicken, and honey chicken are all good. But the owners of this place are EXTREME tightwads. * The combo prices have went up again and again and again, just since 2014. From $7.25 to $7.75 to $7.95, now they're $8.25! UPDATE: Now $8.35. I guess every time they have to spend money to order new menus, the prices go up. UPDATE: New menus and yet again, a price increase. $8.45 for combos. I wonder if this is the most expensive in the county yet. * This restaurant has seating, but there's no AC in the summer (very hot) and no heat in the winter (so cold that the employees wear winter coats.) UPDATE: There's a window AC running now. Barely. * Coupons are valid only if you pay with cash. * They charge extra to use cards for under $10. * They only buy children's size plastic forks and spoons. * They don't have any plastic knives. * While waiting for an order, I've heard them on the phone telling a customer who received another customer's order by delivery that they (the restaurant) would have to come and pick up the wrong order from each customer and then swap them. And while heating up leftovers from my last order, I found a piece of metal in my food. This place is so unnecessarily rude!!! I made an order for delivery I specifically have them my address and clarified where I lived I was told an ETA and didn't receive my food when I called the lady that answered the phone acted like I was bothering her and to top it all off after I had already waited over an hour for my order she blatantly told me that the delivery driver had literally just left with my food!! Seriously!! Like in what world is this ok??!!! Don't waste your time ordering from this place the hassle you have to go thru just to get your food isn't worth it! Best Chinese food in the West Reading area by a mile. General Tso's has more of a crispy vibe, which makes for a nice change of pace. And whatever you do, get their Crab Rangoon. Best I've ever had. Always big, creamy pockets of crab/cheese, unlike some places that provide more dough over crab. read more

Been going to every chinese take out in the area for 20 years, this place is tide for number one for a place I won't say that's in Wolmelsdorf. They might be a dollar more than most places per order, but the taste, and quality is unbeatable. They also do not skimp on quantity. read more

Definitely out of our way, but we'll make the trip from now on. Everything we have ordered is delicious. We have tried several close by to us, but have been disappointed - way too much sugar in most dishes. Seriously, we have lived in the area for 11 years and just kind of gave up trying to find a great Chinese food restaurant. We discovered how fantastic Great Wall is after our daughter got a new job in town and her co-workers ordered lunch here. She raved, we ordered, and now we have a new favorite. Their shrimp lo mein and General Tao's chicken are both so flavorful and delicious, with just a slight sweetness. Try their crab rangoon! They tofu with garlic or Genera Tso is really good. It's not on the menu but written on a piece of paper taped to the wall. Sometimes it's a little too sweet but usually it's very good. My only real complaint is that it could use some vegetables in it. You get a huge bowl of tofu with sauce which will feed several people but I'd prefer 1/2 the tofu and maybe some broccoli. Mu Shu Vegetable is excellent as well. They have a vegetarian eggroll which is tasty and not too greasy. Very large portions and very reasonably priced. read more
