Yup, chalk that one up for Thaiwat! It's a highly rated Thai restaurant in Wyomissing and we enjoyed a very nice dinner here tonight. The two servers had their work cut out for them delivering soups and salads and entrees to the book club, but when it was our turn to order, our server was friendly and very polite. We went with three choices tonight. We shared a $10.95 order of five Tulip Dumplings. They were amazing, with ground chicken, shrimp and crabmeat wrapped in a tulip shape, then steamed and served with a soy vinaigrette. My wife had a House Salad ($9.95) with assorted garden vegetables served with a house peanut sauce and topped with crispy tofu. I went with a Larb Kai Salad ($13.95) with shredded chicken, lime juice, carrots, onions, green bell pepper, and romaine lettuce, all dressed in a vinaigrette. The salad was visually stunning- a real rainbow of bright reds, greens, and orange, all mixed with a good amount of shredded chicken. It was a wonderful dish. The dining room is gorgeous, with Buddhist temple imagery all over. The food was great. The service was great. The value and pricing are reasonable. Thaiwat gets high marks in my book! read more

I came across Thaiwat on a delivery app and I'm so happy I did. I ordered the chicken pad Thai and chicken curry puff. The food was hot on arrival and packaged with care. The chicken curry puff was a flaky pastry stuffed with marinated chicken, curry and potatoes. It was paired with a house cucumber sauce. The sauce was the perfect compliment. The chicken pad Thai was a nice portion. Great flavor and the right chicken to noodle ratio. Everything was delish and I'll definitely be ordering again. read more

Ordered Chicken Satay, Pad See Ew, Beef Massaman Curry, & Curry Duck. Satay was standard skewered chicken w/ peanut butter-like dipping sauce & chutney of cucumber. Pad See Ew was good, but not best version I've had. Noodle has to have that distinct chewiness or it looses something. First time having Massaman Curry, which is CNN Travel's #1 of World's 50 Best Foods. It was not #1 for me (least not yet) but was flavorful- generously sauced peanut-infused coconut curry with chucks of cooked potatoes, medallions of tender beef, & scarce carrot/bell pepper. Standout was Curry Duck, a Chef Special seasonal version that included chunks of pumpkin. Duck had crispy skin despite swimming in red curry sauce & generous accompaniment of vegetables that included broccoli & pea pods. Would hands down return for this dish again & again. I ordered the traditional green curry in coconut milk with bamboo shoots, green bean, red pepper and fresh basil with tofu and steam noodles - spicy level 5. The taste of the food was excellent and the portion was fair for the pricing. The flavor was complex but fully balanced. The highest spice level was just right - I think much of anything less would potentially be a bit too bland. The lips tingled a little bit from the spice but nothing felt like it was burning or painful. Quite excellent flavor, really. The staff was very friendly when I picked the food up and it was hot and ready at the scheduled time. Ample parking in the shopping center and handicap spots nearby. Went back to this restaurant after many years. Previous experience wasn't stellar, for dine-in service was slow. Which was why we got take out this time. Online ordering system was very easy. Unfortunately you can't use PayPal or have option to pay at time of pickup. Food was delicious and SPICY. We got Tom Yum soup, green curry, and Evil jungle princess. Asked for no tofu in green curry and with only vegetables. But, ended up with some tofu anyway. For an entrée, portion size seemed to be on the smaller side. Looks as they say are deceiving, I say that because it's located in a strip mall. Don't be nervous by the illusion that everything is spicy, they had a lot of mild dishes. Not the traditional Thai flavors that I'm used to. I would describe the flavor as flat or lack luster. It tastes like Thai but missing something. I'm used to strong flavors. I had the the drunken noodles and it was fairly boring , not to mention they weren't the usual wide flat noodles, they were more like a linguini width. Also it was so hot when it came to my table that it seared my tongue and I mean SEARED, not the way hot food would normally burn one's mouth. Idk how someone would even make something that hot. I recovered by morning but I'm still baffled how food could get that hot. I've had food straight from a pan when I cook and never ever have I had food burn me like that. Every now and then, I get a severe craving for drunken noodles. There are times the cravings get so intense that I'd do horrible things - unforgivable things - just to get a plate of drunken noods' inside of me. The good news is Thaiwat is close enough that I can usually get there in time before my innocuous yearning is whipped into an insatiable, hunger-driven rage. Thaiwat's rendition of this Chinese-inspired dish surely hits the spot, with its broad, glossy noodles, tender chicken, signature heat, and colorful peppers that add a refreshing level of freshness and texture. I always like to try something new on each visit, so this time I ordered the tulip dumplings as a starter. They were little flower-shaped dough clumps filled with chicken, shrimp, and crab meat. Sadly, the dough was so dense and the filling so bland that I couldn't really tell WHAT I was tasting. If it weren't for the soy vinaigrette dipping sauce, this dish, while pretty, would have lacked any semblance of flavor. Sadly, Thai restaurants really haven't quite yet caught on in the Reading area. On my most recent visit, there was one other table for dinner at 7:00 p.m. So, uh, I must say, the service was quick and attentive, to say the least. Location may hurt this place, as it rests deep, deep in the bowels of Berkshire Square. People driving by the shopping center certainly wouldn't see it from the road. It's worth checking out, though, if you're just stopping in for a quick bite. I'll frequently pop in after I do my grocery shopping at nearby Redner's. read more

We love Thaiwat. We get delivery or dine in. The staff is always very friendly. All of the food is very delicious. As a vegetarian, I like there are many option for me. My only complaint and a small one is I wish the menu items would be labeled better for vegetarians. A dish may only have vegetables, but the sauce might have chicken stock, fish sauce, etc in it. If you are worried about spicy, they have peppers next to the dish to show how spicy it is. One pepper to three peppers. We have SO many favorite dishes here! Where do I start?! Appetizer- chicken satay, and Sriracha wings!! Both are awesome! Sometimes they don't have sriracha wings on the menu... but just ask for them, because they are worth it! Even with all of the new places to eat and drink popping up around Berks County Thaiwat remains one of my very favorite and first choice when it comes to Thai. Though I rarely stray from the Drunken Noodles (typically ordering them instead of ) I have never been disappointed by a meal there and my family and I have gone there A LOT. Occasionally the food can take a little while to come out, but it arrives piping hot so you know they're making it specifically for you. The staff is always friendly and my water glass doesn't stay low or empty for long. I discovered this restaurant when visiting family in Reading. I don't know how I missed it during other trips, but I will never miss it again. I was greeted nicely and seated immediately. The menu is expansive but i decided to order something basic in order to have a fair comprison. I started with a small bowl of the Veggie Tom Kha and it was delicious! The veggies were fresh and crisp and the broth was a nice balance where the coconut milk wasnt overwhelming. Ill be returning JUST for this soup at least once before I leave. I also ordered the tofu Pad Thai. I always start with that to see how they make it. I was very happy with it. The peanut flavor wasnt overwhelming. I might have liked more veggies, especially snow peas and they only had lemons for garnish, instead of the normal lime but despite that, it was very good. A surprise in the elbow of an L-shaped shopping center behind the Berkshire Mall, Thaiwat has been going strong for years. The space was once a pet shop, but the beautiful wood paneling makes the room pretty, despite the bright lights. Sometimes I crave their limey coconut soup and the cabbage salad with peanut chili dressing. There is plenty for vegans, and we often get the green curry, with a hint of spice. The Jack & Sue dish is very cute, a vegetable patty shaped like a heart. And they have corn cakes. I regret to see that a huge tv has horned into this zen space, but at least it was turned off. I believe the same family runs the larger Lemongrass in Lancaster. That one has a bigger veg menu. This place does a lot of takeout business too. The lunch specials are a good deal. BYOB of course. They let us take over for our work holiday party, which includes about 50 people. read more

Thaiwat is your best bet for legit Thai Cuisine in Berks County. And while there are other places in the area that advertise Thai food, this is the only place where you'll find truly authentic Thai fare. Or at least reasonably authentic. Thaiwat presents a nice cute and at least somewhat intimate atmosphere with booths and small tables. The place fills up pretty good on the weekend nights. The menu contains a pretty standard selection of Thai items. They have little "pepper" icons on the menu to indicate relative spiciness with a range of one to three "peppers." They will also tone down (or up) a dish if you ask them to. In my brief experience here, the one-pepper dishes just aren't spicy at all, so don't be afraid. It seems that they are very conservative in their use of the famous Thai chili pepper, ostensibly to cater to the presumed tastes of the local clientele. In short, if you want real heat, you'll have to ask for it, maybe even beg for it. Some dishes I think they do well: Chicken Satay: Marinated grilled chicken skewers served with peanut sauce and pickled cucumber. This could be the perfect appetizer. Everyone seems to like this one. Tom Yum Kung: Spicy shrimp soup with lemongrass. A Thai classic. My only disappointment is that it was not made spicy enough. Next time I'll coerce them into adding more chilis. Thai Basil Chicken: Sautéed With red pepper, green beans, garlic, onion and the perfect thai basil. I recommend asking for extra chilis with this one. Panang Beef Curry: This dish could be the single greatest thing ever produced by the nation of Thailand. Period. End of story. Forget everything you've ever known about curries and try this one. Speaking of curries, in Thai cuisine, the word curry simply means a mixture of spices. The Thais make a whole range of curries and few bear any resemblance to the yellow "curry" that many Americans think of. So give them a try. Here's a suggestion for a fun night out with a date or some friends: In Thailand, food is almost always served "family style" with the food dishes placed in the center of the table and each person gets an empty plate and just takes what they want. The idea of each person ordering their own meal is very strange to most Thais. Thaiwat is used to serving American style; they will serve family style, but you'll have to ask. A good general rule is to order two or three more dishes than the number of people at your table. For example, if there are two of you, order 4 dishes. Ideally, you'll try to create the perfect balance of dishes: salty, spicy, sour, and sweet. Include a soup and salad in your dishes and you'll have a true masterpiece. The jasmine rice is the canvas upon which you'll create your masterpiece. Put a serving of rice on your plate. Then go for the dish of choice, placing it on the rice before you consume. My wife, her Goddaughter and I visited this restaurant for dinner on a Saturday night at 6:30. We were seated right away as they were only about three-quarters full. And we sat there... And sat there.... And sat there for a total of about 15 minutes till a waitress greeted us & took our drink order... The service disappointments continued: After bringing us our drinks, the waitress got the dinner order from two tables that were seated *after* us before getting our dinner order. When our dinners finally did arrive, they were not presented at the same time which is really odd. They brought my wife's Goddaughter's first, then mine arrived about two minutes later (with absolutely no explanation), then *some* of the food arrived for two other nearby tables, then my wife's food arrived a good five minutes after mine.... Then the remaining food arrived for the nearby tables. As you might have guessed, our food started getting cold while we graciously waited for my wife's food to arrive, even though she kept encouraging us to go ahead and eat. Don't get me wrong, I know that sometimes dinners can arrive a moment or two apart, but seven minutes or so from when the first dinner arrived to when the last plate arrived (for a party of three) is a bit much, isn't it? How does this sort of thing happen??? As you can guess, we spent a lot of time at the restaurant just sitting around waiting... As I said, we arrived around 6:30 and it was a full two hours later till we were paying our check and leaving... And it's not like we had a seven course meal. The food was good, but this is not the place to go if you have any sort of time constraint. My friend took me here for Thai and I was excited because we both love Thai and have similar palates! So I thought this restaurant was about to be bomb! Decor was great! Simple but the wall art and the pictures give it good ambience. Service was a bit standoffish initially and then warmed up a bit towards the end. I ordered the corn cakes and shrimp blanket as appetizer. The plates were more fascinating than these dishes. The corn cakes tasted like fried mush; no distinct flavors and the corn wasn't really any different than the mush filling. I only forced myself to finish the appetizer because I didn't want to waste it but I literally stopped eating it after the first corn cake and forced down the last two after my entree. The shrimp blanket tasted like it was unseasoned shrimp wrapped in rice paper and deep fried in corn oil. The oil had a distinctive taste and I was not a fan. Plus the shrimp itself wasn't seasoned. Normally, the shrimp blanket appetizer at Thai restaurants are well seasoned and also have basil leaves added to give it a savory taste. For the entrees: My friend ordered the Sweet Garden entree that came with white rice. She really liked it! It came in a red tomato-based thin soup (but not watery, very flavorful). It had broccoli, thick cut wedge tomatoes, pineapples, and chicken. The chicken was dry. I ordered the Pad Thai and I was disappointed. The Pad Thai had more of a vermicelli-type noodle than a flat rice noodle. The color also threw me off. It was light brown which reminded me of a Pad See Ew than a Pad Thai. There was no lasting flavor that would make me want to order this dish again or even patronize this restaurant. FYI: Spicy means spicy at this restaurant. My friend felt it was too spicy and for me (a spice lover) I agreed with my friend and had to keep my water close by. read more
