Ordered a Classic American burger with cheese, mayo and tomato. I informed my server that I couldn't have any avocado on my burger. I'm allergic to avocado. My burger came out with avocado on it. I sent the burger back and asked for a new burger. The server gave me the same burger with the avocado taken off and told me it was a new burger. They covered the top of the burger with mayo and the bun still had avocado on it.They did finally make me a different burger, but at that point I didn't trust that the burger would be free of avocado and I didn't eat it anyway. My wife said the cheesesteak was ok but that there are better places in Reading to get one. My burger was cooked well done and I ordered medium rare. The toppings were good but when you cook the burger to the point of dry it doesn't matter. The taproom they have is 1000% better and has a better vibe and flow. I thought the food was amazing. We were party of four. The guys each got a Cuban sandwich. It was huge and they said it was delicious. My husband got fries instead of the chips. They were both good. My husband also got the French onion soup which was seasoned well. The woman of the foursome both got the lobster grilled cheese. Yummy and filled with lobster meat. I choose the truffled fries. Great tavern food. And what is tavern food? Well, it's comfort food. Fish & chips, pub pretzels, burgers. That sort of thing. At its most literal core, comfort food is what makes you comfortable. So yeah, it's most likely not going to be pig tongue or beef tartare or goose liver. Rather, it's chicken & waffles or plump meatballs served in house made sauce. Each and every dish is made with love and care. There's a nice equilibrium here. They aren't trying to do too much, and they work within their means. They know it's not gourmet, and that's not the point. It's all about delivering quality food using local, fresh ingredients. Hopefully the Liberty Ale House survives the pandemic. Things are looking a bit rough. I mean shit, it looks like they fell behind on the rent for their website. That's what, $50-100 per month? Probably way less. Just tried to go on there and it was shut down. If they can't afford the website monthly fee, I just hope they can afford their actual property payments. We're all rooting for you, Liberty Ale House. But damn, keep your website up and running. Pay that extra money. That's the only way some people can find you and browse your menu. If you lose that, you lose your online presence. We are not from the area but was recommended to come here. We had plans to go to the Santander Arena for a concert and wanted to grab some drinks and apps before heading there. Service: The gentlemen who was the host/manager (not sure) sat us on the left patio/side area. No waitress ever came over to us and they all kept walking by us. Eventually we got the hosts attention and made him aware that we haven't been greeted yet. He apologized and eventually someone came over to us and we ordered some drinks. A table sat after us and they were talking about the happy hour specials with their waitress, while our waitress never mentioned anything to us about it. It would have been nice to know. Drinks: We only did beers, but the drafts were nice and cold! Atmosphere: There were a few picnic tables outside to sit at. The area on the left patio we sat was enclosed at first but while we were paying our bill the host and another server were opening all the windows and garage door to make it more open and fresh area. This area WAS nice and cool with air conditioned... I'm not sure if this is their evening atmosphere opening the windows/garage door, and I do like the concept, but it was just very warm and humid out that evening that we were just happy we paid when we did. The table next to us even said out loud "there goes the cold!" Food: For apps we did the large pretzel and mozzarella moons (4 per order). The pretzel was huge, but it was only ok, it kind of tasted stale. It came with some kind of mustard that had a good taste but it didn't stick to the pretzel, so you had to really scoop it. The cheese sauce was good though. Mozzarella moons were crispy and delish. We then did the steak tacos (only 2 per order with no sides) and a French onion soup. The soup didn't have much taste to it. Tacos were ok. We weren't eating too much but we did see some of the burgers come out that looked good. Overall the place was only alright. My husband and I used to go here a few times a month and then they changed the menu and my favorite chicken and waffle dish was gone. Fast forward a few years my Pickleball women's group play Thursday afternoons and go there afterwards. We have anywhere from 12-22 people. We are patient and there to talk and eat and drink. Our favorite server is Emily as we usually have her and she has the best attitude and takes awesome care of us with a smile. I will say while she was on vacation 2 weeks the other servers took great care of us so no slight to anyone but Emily is the bomb. I either get the cheesesteak or the buffalo chicken cheesesteak and both are good. Many girls get the tacos and love them. Taco salads are regularly ordered. There are beer drinkers and wine and some mixed drinks. The blueberry bourbon drink is awesome. A lot love the vodka can drinks and grapefruit is the number 1 flavor so Escape Goat is the choice. The dining room has glass garage doors so when the weather is warm they can be lifted and it's like a patio. 3rd time in a row that the food was just really blah. Pork belly tacos were nearly flavorless. Just a chunk of pork belly that really should have been diced up to possibly absorb any flavor that it was cooking in, AND to possibly make it earlier to eat on a taco, rather than having the entire piece pull out. What a mess. I ended up just emptying the taco onto the plate and used a knife and fork to eat it. Perhaps if it was cooked longer it could get a little more tender and maybe, just maybe, get some flavor? I had the same problem with pork tacos earlier in the year. Just a giant chunk of flavorless pork but at least the pork was tender. Once again, the Brussels sprouts left me wanting.. wanting for what they used to be. I think this place may have run its course, food wise. However, it's still a good place to get a drink as the beer selection is very good and the cocktails are good too. There were so many tempting options on their menu it was tricky to narrow it down to pick only 1. 4 stars because 1 entree was absolutely awful, 2 were exceptionally great, 1 was okay. The wings are fantastic. Ranks near the best I've ever had. All 4 of us agreed on this. Perfectly juicy, tender with slightly crisp outside. They are not jumbo like the menu states though. Their cheesesteaks are high quality deliciousness. The lobster grilled cheese was superb too. The burrito was okay. The fried rice w/ chicken tempura was absolutely awful! Due to how awful that entree was I gave them 4 stars. The rice was the consistency of mashed potatoes which tasted awful. A couple bites were all I could stand. When the server came by I picked up the fork w/ rice on it, turned it upside down with the large clump of mushed rice sticking to the fork and asked him if it should do this. His reply was "no, really sorry about that." That was it. He didn't show any concern about correcting this situation. If I'm in the area again I'll eat there. I ordered fish and chips with 5 wings. My food arrived via Delivery Dudes hot and smelling great. See the pics and that is exactly the way the food looked when I opened the containers. The fish was perfect, the beer batter was delicious. The fries were slightly seasoned and delicious. Now over to the wings.... they were PERFECT. My last take out experience in the area won't leave my head. It made me appreciate take out again and not be frustrated by the lack of food scene availabilities these days.... And this was since having take-out from Liberty Ale House. Absolutely spectacular!! And major kudos on timing with Deliver Dudes, in that the food arrived hot (I live ~ 10 min. away). So only a few items my boyfriend and I tried. But, as said, beyond memorable. The Brussel Sprouts app! Bacon, blue, yum!! Has convinced me that I will shave my Brussels and roast them. And we both ordered burgers. My boyfriend loved his Plum BBQ burger. And typically likes his beef rare and it was not overcooked. And myself....ok, my diet is weird (long story), I am primarily Pescatarian, but I still eat bacon. So I got the Rise and Shine burger with a Chipotle Veggie burger. WHAT??!!!!! How did this burger show up take out status, and still had a warm, oozy, beautiful egg once I cut into it. It was epic! I immediately started looking up chipotle veggie burger recipes after I finished my meal. And can only hope my replication on the dish will be anywhere close.
