Salad was fresh and shrimp was cooked well and flavorful enough. Price was reasonable and staff here is gracious. One of my friends loved his salmon BLT- he doesn't like tomatoes by themselves but he enjoyed the way the tomatoes balanced with the salmon. He also enjoyed the fresh crunchy bread (focaccia?) with it. Another friend loved his blackberry burger, but didn't taste any blackberry bbq sauce and it was more like regular bbq. I almost chose this but would've been slightly disappointed to not have that variation if I had that selection. The seating was a bit tight on the inside of the table and the entrance is a bit odd looking as there is a hallway between the bar area and the dining area. read more

I love this place. It's very old timey. The inside has so much character. My wife and I sat at the bar and had a drink while we waited for our adult kids to show up. When they got there we were seated right away. Melissa was our server and she did an excellent job. All of our food was great and for dessert we had chocolate martinis which were awesome. Only complaint is we did have our little guy with us (6) when the others came and they had no icecream for him. It's an easy item to stock even if just cups. Not a deal breaker tho if I lived local i could definitely see myself being a regular here. I can't say enough about the old school feel. It feels like you're apart of history when you're in here and honestly I don't know how old this place is. It feels like it's 100 in a good way. read more

West Reading Tavern came recommended from a friend and did not disappoint. I didn't check out the dining area or patio, but the bar area is small, dark, and intimate. We weren't sure in the beginning, only having one beer and leaving. We walked to another nearby restaurant, which was more modern and trendy, but quickly realized that we needed to go back. There's something charming about the Tavern. If you are a craft beer lover, you will love this place. Not only a well rounded variety of drafts, but an even better bottle selection. The prices are well below what you'd see at any other bar. Well below! We shared the calamari and pad thai fries. Both were above average. The calamari was fresh, not over fried, tossed with bok choy, and a sweet chili sauce. I could have eaten another plate! We mainly ordered the fries because it was a combination we had never had before. I loved the cabbage and carrot mixed in with the fries. The pad thai sauce added a sweetness - no ketchup needed! A great twist on such a bland and boring food. We are looking forward to coming back! Lots of beers to try! read more

Four stars for being a nice hangout for drinking buddies. Three stars for the food. Rounded down to three because, well, food is important. There are countless watering holes in town, but few can deliver the goods in both food AND drink. It all starts with the menu. Not the size of the menu, mind you. I think a small menu goes a long way, especially in restaurants with small kitchens. You can bang out entrees and not befuddle your cooks with 200 menu items. Speed and efficiency in the kitchen goes up, and everyone is happy. I would say, however, that unless you're trying to be a gourmet sandwich shop, your burgers should 1.) not outnumber the other entrees on the menu, and 2.) not out-price the entrees on the menu. WR Tavern is guilty of the former, and close to being guilty of the latter. The biggest offender is the "Impossible Burger," named so because it is completely vegan and tastes "just like beef." A feat like that must be impossible, no? I think the true feat is requiring patrons to pay $14.50 for said burger. Listen, I realize vegans are treated as second class citizens these days, and sometimes it's deserved, but charging them the same amount it costs them to refuel their Prius each month for a wimpy, 4 oz. vegan patty is simply cruel and unusual punishment. But I'm a meat eater. And I'm still not wild about the food. Please tell me what in god's name is going on with the pork schnitzel. Schnitzel is huge in these parts, mainly due to the large population of German-Americans that settled here centuries ago, but so many schnitzel dishes are just watered-down, bastardized versions in the here and now. The pork itself was as tough and dry as a dog's chew toy. And the kluski was a soggy mess - just overcooked to hell. The saving grace is probably the seafood. Scallops in the Manchester by the Sea entree were cooked perfectly. Each plump scallop had a beautiful sear and was bursting with flavor. Sadly, ever other meat, including the chicken roulade, was overcooked and as dry as the Sahara. I highly recommend WR Tavern for a happy hour meet-up with your mates to toss a few back, but when it comes to the dining side of things, I suggest visiting one of the other numerous eateries dotting Penn Ave in the heart of West Reading. read more

Good food. Limited selection but very good and the service is outstanding.. One of our regular haunts, never disappointed.

2 stars for the food 4 stars for the service ------------------------------------------- We went to the West Reading Tavern on a Thursday night right when they opened the dining room for dinner at 5 p.m. Upon entering the dining room, a server told us to sit where we wanted. West Reading Tavern's décor is that of an old English pub with lots of dark wood beams and some stained glass windows. The end result is a dark, drab setting with tired décor. Despite all that, the place was clean. We started off with our drink orders. I had a chocolate martini which was quite good and was the best part of the meal. My husband had a beer. Each meal comes with "button bread" which has poppy seeds and sesame seeds on it. The bread actually was very good and had a homemade taste to it. I asked the server if the restaurant made this bread. She said that it comes from a bakery named Selena's. At the time we went, they were offering some dinner specials to celebrate their anniversary. We both decided to order off the special menu. Soup and salad came with each entrée. I got a cup of onion soup and a salad while my husband opted just for the salad. The salad was good, if uninspiring and the balsamic vinaigrette was decent. The onion soup had a hearty beef flavored broth---not the best I've ever had but far from the worst. For my main course, I chose sea bass served on spaghetti with a scampi sauce, while my husband chose the Jack Daniels pork chops. The sea bass was properly prepared, thus it was moist and flaky. The scampi pasta was...different as I've never seen an item with scampi that didn't have shrimp in it. My husband said his pork chops were over cooked and not very lean as there was some fat on them. Service was quite good and attentive and our server was friendly. Even though the place wasn't busy, they kitchen was on the slow side. Before the tip, dinner cost $66 + change. We both left feeling like it wasn't worth that much money. Oh well...lesson learned. The bar is very popular with the locals. By the time we finished dinner, nearly every seat was taken. I don't think we'll go back here again. read more

This is an overdue review as my experience here occurred in 2021. My latino boyfriend and I (white) had walked in and asked for a table for two. The place was totally packed and there appeared to be only white staff and patrons inside. The host was rude and told us she didn't know how long the wait was, then proceeded to seat a couple of other walk ins immediately after we arrived. Some time later we were taken to the far back to be seated, it was very crowded and there did not seem to be any COVID regulations in place whatsoever. I heard some words being tossed around amongst other tables as we walked by and became increasingly uncomfortable. We left and have never returned. I have heard from a handful of other people in the area who've had similar experiences when patronizing this restaurant as or with a non-white person. I hope things have changed since then. read more

The three stars is because the beer I had was amazing. I mean off the chain amazing. It was like a cookie stout from a local brewery. It was $11 for the beer and a pizza. The pizza left a lot to be desired. It was actually pretty bad. Maybe the food on the regular menu is better. The pizza was just a special that day. Skip the pizza. Order off the menu. And enjoy the beer! read more

This Restaurant invests a lot in atmosphere. The food selection is not very diverse. Duck Fry Fat might be addictive, but the chefs don't cook the appetizer very consistently. Soggy disgusting fingers on a plate. The owner was nice, but he creepily didn't blink much. Seems like the staffing predominately favors young Aryan girls as servers. This may sound odd but today was the annual art on the avenue and I took my children for the first time. Went after work, on the recommendation of a co-worker. I'm glad I did. Had Asian-spicy wings as an appetizer. Smoke house burger( perfectly prepared pink as I had ordered ) with bacon , avocado, skipped the bun and upgraded my side to brussel sprouts. Great dinner for less than $30. Jill was very attentive server, who help me maximize my options and didn't even try to talk me out of a beer when I ordered the low carb meal. Had #16 delirium tremens. Fantastic ! After a great day at the Mid Atlantic Air Show in Reading, PA., my son and I stopped by this tavern. This was our 2nd year of doing this. We ran across this place last year on our way home. There is nothing fancy about this place, just that nice neighborhood local feel to it. And nice and clean also. As you walk in, there is a large bar with seating for dining nearby. For colder days, there is also a nice fireplace here. This is the darker room but also a very cool room after being in the sun all day. As you walk back, it opens up to another decent size room with plenty of seating and a smaller bar that is well lit. There is also outside seating available. From this room you can also see your food being prepared in the kitchen. Even Mark, the owner, is in there working hard to prepare and deliver your food to you. My son and I had the pleasure to chat with Mark last year, and a little on this current visit. He is a super friendly all around guy. You can tell he takes great pride in his tavern/restaurant that was handed down from his father. The food was great. I had the crunchy fish tacos made with Sea Bass. Delicious!!!! There is a good selection of food, as there is craft beers. The servers were great. So friendly. They did a wonderful job. If you are in the area, stop in. It also is a nice little area to walk around in. read more

I've been here before and was happy with my fish tacos, but I stopped in Saturday afternoon after 2 pm. It wasn't crazy busy, but took about 40 minutes to get my black bean burger, which had absolutely no consistency to it at all and was extremely bland. It was complete mush. My husband ordered a very well done burger that was rare. We paid for our drinks and left. Very disappointed. read more

Looking at other reviews, we must have been there on an off day (Saturday). My wife and I ordered a burger, chicken wings, and two side salads for a late lunch. Our salads came out after about 15 minutes, and they were ok. Then the bar tender disappeared. We finished our cocktails, and nobody was around to ask us if we wanted another. After 45 minutes the people who ordered right before us got their food. An hour after the salads we finally got the rest of our food. My wife thought her tavern burger, with aioli, was great. My wings were just ok. I asked for hot, and they weren't. Plus they were pretty small when you consider they were a buck a piece. To add insult to injury, after dropping $50 for lunch, we went two doors down to a brewery that had food that looked incredible, and fast service. read more

We entered as a 10 person group at 7:30. Closing time was 11. We just wanted dinner and to leave. The front bar tender looked at us and said we weren't her problem. We went to the back where we were sat. The waitress approached and said "I've been here since 10:30, I just f***ing can't". Some food was good, others was just blah. The tavern burger bun was soaked in butter. We will not be returning to Reading or this Tavern. read more

A group of us went in there on a Saturday night, on a whim because most other places were full. We were seated quickly by a smiling host. The atmosphere was interesting, but seemed to be clean. The host brought us over waters and that's when the issues began. Our waitress finally came over to take our drink orders, which they came fairly quick. We all put in our food orders, 3 burgers & a order of chicken tenders. Easy right? We waited almost an hour for our food! Two tables came in after us and we're given food before us! Once our food finally came out, I immediately asked for the check. The food was good. Now was the food actually good, or was it because we were all starving? I don't we will be returning to this place. read more

Let me open with this - there is NOTHING on the menu for vegans, and only one thing for vegetarians. However, they were more than willing to cater to my needs and were careful in doing so. They made me a penne with a great tomato sauce - and some steamed vegetables for a side. The bartender even thought of me when bringing out house bread and butter - she brought me a small saucer of olive oil to dip in. Quite nice! The prices were moderate and for the average joe, this place doesn't seem half bad. Eh, it worked for dinner - but I prob won't return. read more

We just were asked to leave after a few drinks. We were talking to a couple of people and Donald trump came up and I supported my president because of illegal immigration. Nasty bartender, rude disgusting woman. I'll write more if I can. I didn't get her name but I asked for food to go. Took almost an hour and when I dared to ask for an update she tried to shoo me away so she could attend to the more well off customers so she can get a bigger tip. A patron paid for my meal because he saw how horrible she was. Everyone was trying to hold me back. She was wrong and everyone knew it. Then she threw my food in front of me like a dog when it was ready and didn't even pretend to acknowledge me. Oh yea and it escalated to the point where the owner was screaming in my face. While I was sobbing. Repulsive from the top to the bottom. read more

The tavern is back and gaining in popularity again. Dinner was mostly delicious. We had Montauk pasta, Seafood salad, Tavern burger and Tavern cutlet (Chicken Marsala). All were delicious except the mushroom risotto with the Marsala dish was so salty as to be inedible. The salads were excellent and the bread appetizer was better than we've had anywhere. Service was great too. One star deducted for the risotto. Too bad the chefs didn't taste it before serving. We'll definitely give it another chance and do recommend it because otherwise it was a delightful time. read more

Glad to see that you are staying open to defy the PA Governor, who does not have the authority to temporarily close down restaurants. My wife and I were recently here and have been many times. This last time was different. I had the Montauk pasta and it was fine! My wife had the seafood salad which she has had before. This time the only seafood present was shrimp, no scallops! When i asked about that, the waitress told me it doesn't include scallops anymore. REALLY! Then why is it still on the menu saying shrimp and scallops? In addition, her meal had no cashews and no arugula, which are also listed on the menu for the seafood salad! What is this? For a $60 bill, either give the people what they think they are ordering OR change the damn menu to reflect the changes you've made. The motto is ask exactly what is included in your meal since the menu is apparently deceptive and incorrect. We will rethink about coming back to this place. read more

Took my mother there yesterday (September 4) for lunch. I ordered the shrimp rosa soup, which appeared to have a fragment of shrimp in an otherwise milky, pink, and slightly salty broth. The server, when serving it, asked me if it was ok if there were mushrooms in it. Seemed a bit odd to announce it as it was served. When she cleared, she asked about how the soup was and I told her of my concerns and summarized "it was not very good". My mother and I split their Cobb salad. Tiny bits of vegetable and huge pieces of lettuce. Made it difficult to eat. My understanding of a good chopped salad is that all components are roughly equal in size. This was not. The truffle fries were attractively served. The were not well fried and arrived at the table browned but soggy/not crispy. They were very hot. Were they pre-fried and microwaved? My mother and I did not have a good understanding do what the other wanted when we placed our order. She subsequently ordered a sandwich. About 10 minutes after we placed the order, the server still had not brought it, and went to another table and she and another employee dressed in black and white pajama bottoms engaged the woman there in a long conversation about her baby. I attempted to get the server's attention, and finally shouted her name, startling her, in order to attend to us. We asked for her to prepare the sandwich to go. My mother voiced the concern that our making waves might cause one of them to mess with her food. When the check arrived there was no apology for the delay and the soup was still on the bill. I paid the check and we left. I expressed my concerns regarding the quality of the soup, the server's response, and our treatment by the server to the bartender in the front bar and gave her my contact information. She said the manager would contact me. I have heard nothing yet. read more
