An OK takeout experience at Cheers Bistro. I visited late in the evening and it seemed like they might have been preparing to close the kitchen for the night. Ordering was OK, however, I had to be relentless in asking for updates on my order as there were a few to-go bags sitting at the bar. I stood at the bar for quite a while and eventually received my food, but not without an unwelcoming attitude from someone who I believe might have been managing orders and the bar. The food was OK. The dining room looks inviting and comfortable, however, it seems the bar is the feature, so don't expect a quiet dinner experience. Definitely a good, casual bar experience in downtown Reading. If at the Doubletree I'll try them again and perhaps dine-in. read more

A small but complete menu offer something for everybody. Cocktails were good. I had the courage salmon with broccolini on the side and my son had the vegan shepherds pie. All were very good, including my Caesar salad to start. Service was friendly and prompt, and we will be back. A great option when visiting Redding or seeing a show at Santander Arena or performing arts Center. For Thanksgiving, DON'T DO IT. Last year was terrific--attractive setup, live music, ambiance, and decent food. This year, it has a cafeteria vibe. Overall 84/100 -- was completely dead when we went, get the salmon Went here on a Tuesday night at 8pm and were the only people in the entire restaurant. They lit the fire and turned on the music for us, which was a nice touch. Overall the ambience was very nice and they took care of us. It's rare I order seafood from a landlocked state but the menu was small enough that you either could get steak, seafood, or a wrap. I went with the special of the day which was a flounder with rice pilaf. The flounder was good but the salmon was much better, would only recommend the salmon. The rice pilaf was good as well as the broccolini. The mashed potatoes were fantastic and the roasted vegetables were what you'd expect. Also had the ice cream cheesecake which was odd and wouldn't get again. Bill came out to about 120 for 2 glasses of wine, 2 seafood entrees, and a dessert. Overall, had a great dinner. read more

The hotel restaurant for the Doubletree. I was there for breakfast and dinner and both were very good. Modern upscale decor and there were table tops, booths and regular tables. Breakfast was a buffet and I believe they had stuff to order from the menu as well. The buffet was pretty good actually. Better than most hotel buffets. Eggs to order as well as the usual bacon, sausage and ham. They also had biscuits and gravy as well as pancakes. Fresh fruit, toast and pastries. The dinner was great too. I had the gnocchi with braised beef and the lobster bisque. Both were delicious. This place is a great option whether you are staying at the hotel or not. read more

I have to give props to Cheers American Bistro in the Reading Doubletree Hilton. They are literally everything! They helped me put together a graduation celebration dinner for my daughter. They assisted me with the menu, provided a lovely space for our party and even accommodated us when the party was larger than originally planned. All while preparing for a prom, another graduation, a wedding and Mother's Day! Karla Smith, the manager, was excellent with communicating with me over the last two months of planning. Our head server, Gia, and the rest of the wait staff, gave us service with a smile and were very affable. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was beautiful. It was the perfect evening for my baby! I don't know if it was an off night or what, but I came here after a concert in town as their kitchen was still open at 10:30pm. The best part of my experience was the personable bartender. He was awesome. I ordered a medium rare burger with smoked gouda cheese. The burger came out well done and was not juicy and the patty used didn't seem to be anything special. The bread was OK and the burger was eh all around. It was definitely a 2/3 star burger, not worth the $13. I immediately regretted ordering it after taking a bite and wished I went for the lobster mac they had on the menu instead (15). Where the experience really took a dive was when I asked for a doubleshot of espresso. It was late at this point; perhaps 11pm and I get that they were closing up. One of the servers graciously made me one. When I got the bill, I was charged $10 for the doubleshot of espresso! I've never paid that much for an espresso in my life! Even at the fanciest coffee shops, I think $4 has been the max. I didn't say anything, but damn, I had some sticker shock. Between the not cooked to order average burger and the sticker shock on the espresso, I was disappointed. However, the environment was cool. The music they were playing was good and the bartender was cool. I would definitely order something different if I were to return. read more

After many years of Reading's mayor and other city officials promising to "revitalize" downtown Reading, the DoubleTree by Hilton opened, as well as its integrated in-house restaurant, Cheer's American Bistro. In an absolute prime location across the street from the ever bustling Santander Arena, Cheer's invites guests in for a memorable meal in the heart of one of Pennsylvania's most discordant yet captivating cities. Trying to find a parking space downtown is always an adventure, but luckily guests of the hotel and restaurant alike can take advantage of the DoubleTree Garage right next door. Once, inside, it's a feast for the eyes. And the strangest thing? Even though it exudes this ostentatious - almost pretentious - feel to it, you'll never feel uninvited. Somehow, it retains warmth, sort of like when you go to a fancy dinner party at your one rich friend's house. The food and service matched the simple elegance, all superbly satisfying. Cajun filet medallions started the night and were succulent, tender, and perfectly seasoned, served in a shallow pool of flavorful au jus. The game hen was expertly trimmed and had a gratifying salty crispy skin. My one complaint - the filet medallion risotto. Overly cooked, mushy, and bland. Those poor filet medallions - cooked to hell and lost all of their succulence. 5 star service, 2 star food and menu. During an overnight stay in Reading, we booked in for dinner on a Saturday night. Prior to our meal we attempted to grab a drink at the bar which was packed with a rowdy local crowd. The wait staff completely ignored us so we left after five minutes. For dinner we were seated by the window in comfortable plushy chairs. Very nice romantic lighting and overall ambience. The paper menus that were given to us did not fit the menu prices or the overall atmosphere. Our waiter was outstanding. Very good bread rolls and butter. The drink pours of wine were very generous. However my husband's double gin tasted like less than a single watered down. The menu had been recently changed so many of the items that I've seen on yelp are no longer available. We ended up with the duck appetizer which was basically duck and gravy slopped over french fries with balls of raw cheese on the side. For dinner my husband had the steak and fries. The steak was chewy. I went with the Asian noodle bowl which tasted like something I quickly made at home. Basically scrambled eggs with zucchini and carrots over top the lump of noodles stuck together. I took two bites and couldn't finish is so unappetizing. Everything was extremely salty. read more

Came here for a quick bite while we watched the Eagles/Cowboys game. The food and swrvice was good, nice ambiance also. This is a perfect place to eat when you're in Reading for a show. The food was good. Friendly service. Hubby had a burger and fries, I had the chicken caeser salad. Loved the parmesan crisp crumbled topping. Not cheap there but considering you get 4 hours and possibly more free parking it was great. I expected the pears to be fresh sliced and grilled - the pears were canned with no taste. I would have also preferred marinated beets - the salad dressing they used would have been great for that. We were here for Cole Swindell, the restaurant was completely booked. They told us we can go to the bar area, we got a table for 4, food was decent. Caesar salad was good, the chicken sandwich was tasty. The nachos were delicious. The ambiance was great. Definitely recommend. I'm going to include the brunch Buffet as part of this review for simplicity sake although the buffet area is technically adjacent to Cheers. Nonetheless, like the service in the hotel itself the food is well prepared and served by a refreshingly friendly staff. The cheesesteak is particularly good but they also offer delicious options such as octopus salad and a bistro board (charcuterie, olives, etc...). I can personally speak to all of the options being on par with a high end foodie restaurant. Cheers is quite a treat for the weary corporate traveler, they really train thief staff well. Oh, and they offer 1942 (tequila), something you don't find everywhere. Save yourself the trouble of going out and just eat in at Cheers when staying at the Doubletree! read more

Valentines Day weekend, excited to try Cheers based on internet reviews & pics. We're seated at a comfortable table. I ask for a cocktail menu. Waiter says all drink/dessert menus are being redone. Ok, no physical menus, but do u have any signature cocktails you could recommend?? Waiter: No. Husband: Do you have a craft beer list? Waiter: Miller Light...(waiter has to go check because that's the only beer he can name.) Waiter returns, "the bar tender can make you anything you like." Husband orders Troegs, I order martini w/ house gin. My drink = $14 but tastes as it should, husband says tap system seems right, beer is good. Appetizers- we order The Frickles. Waiter: We're out of that. Me: Ok we'll take Lobster mac n cheese. Waiter: We're out of lobster. But I could ask for it to be made w/ crab. (Not really into paying for lobster & getting crab- pass.) Me: So no lobster bisque either?? Me: Ok, what DO u have? We order duck tacos, not bad, just not that good. They are cold, as was everything delivered to our table that evening- a pet peeve of mine! I order bourbon cheeseburger- not even remotely on the list of best burgers I've had, total let down. Husband gets chicken parm- says it's good but nothing special, & of course, cold. The rolls & butter were delicious and the fries hot & fresh. Here's how I judge eating experiences. I'm a home cook w/ a regular kitchen. If you can't cook a burger or chicken parm better than me & you're a chef, you don't belong in business! It's that simple. $100 on a meal that I got dressed up for, went into the cold for, & drove around in circles in downtown Reading to get, & the food wasn't as good as what I can make at home!? Close up! What is it w/ Berks County & the inability to manage any dining establishment w/ any level of quality, consistency, or integrity. My favorite part of the night: the young man who came to my table & insincerely asked how my experience was. Anyone can ask the question, it's delivering on the promise of a good meal that's the tough part. Given you had no menus, were out of 40% of your menu, & it's a holiday weekend, you should have visited my table long before the bill did! We had drinks here that were comped by the hotel that it's attached to. The bartender was super cool and gave us top shelf liquor for our drinks without charging extra. The Tito's dirty martini was spot on, ice cold, strong without being overpowering and with just the perfect amount of brine. They keep their brine in a pouring bottle with olives in it which was good. The Manhattan was made with bourbon (call me a heathen, I don't care), Knob Creek Small Batch to be precise. Also ice cold, perfect amount of Rosso, although just a standard maraschino cherry. Either way, for comped drinks that I'm pretty sure were supposed to be well liquor only, she knocked it out of the park. Our tip reflected that too! Now, that's how to tend bar! I was in Reading for a few day staying at the Doubletree, and this Bistro is in the lobby. Quite a nice little place. Ate here twice, and enjoyed both evenings. The food was delicious. The portions were rather enormous! You order a pork chop - you get half a pig. You order seafood pasta - you get half the scallops and shrimp in the sea over most of the pasta in Italy. These are not complaints; just observations. To say the least, I was starving when I walked in, stuffed when I rolled out, and still left plenty on the plate. The service was excellent both nights. And even that might be a bit of an understatement. I very much enjoyed the attentiveness. I've stayed at this Doubletree before, and never gave a second thought to eat here (hotel restaurants always seem to disappoint). But I'm glad I gave it a try. I'll definitely be back; and I totally recommend it. read more

Went for a late night bite, didn't realize it would be a limited menu, but ok. Not sure why they're full menu isn't available til close, it's only 10 o'clock and it was a Saturday?!!?! Order the steak and fries, the lobster bisque and the Mano habanero wings with a couple glasses of wine. The bisque was good, a little thin, but good. I had to salt the steak...which i seldom do and quite often ask for low seasoning, but it was good. Came with a side of pesto'ish topping. Fries were good in the steak flavoring. The wings were incredibly spicy...I know, right, they were habanero. But one was not cooked all the way at which point we stopped eating them. We didn't advise anyone though, so they didn't get the opportunity to correct it. I usually ask for them to be well done but didn't this time. I ordered wine which was ridiculously $16 a glass, but eh, that was my choice: overall, nice ambience. The bar area, where I went after my meal, was loaded with drunk people and you could barely move, but there were a couple of events going on so not sure if that's typical. Great place especially for a hotel bar! What an awesome Surprise! The lobster bisque for $7 was a HUGE bowl and was great!!! We also got the bacon appetizer and it was thick and good but not typical "candied bacon" and had a decent kick. Next was the colossal smoked pork chop. It was also huge!! Very good and juicy!! I ordered the fish n chips with sweet potato fries. The fries were great with a little caramel sauce they gave me on the side. The fish wasn't the best I've ever had but was pretty good. By the time I ate my soup I was full!! Haha! We also went for Sunday BRUNCH BUFFET which was big and had lots of items!! Great setting in the bar too! read more

We wanted to have dinner with friends and Reading was about halfway between us, so based on other reviews we decided to stop in. We knew nothing else about the place. The service could not have been better and we couldn't have been happier with our choice - I will not be surprised if we return. The staff went above and beyond - we had personalized service from both Eric, the hotel general manager, and the restaurant manager (I tried so hard to remember her name and I'm disappointed that I forgot it!) Sugar, the hostess who is famous on here, dropped by as well. Everyone was lovely, gave us their time like we were the only customers (we had a 5 pm Saturday reservation and the place was full when we left) and what I really loved was their passion for Reading and all that they are doing to make it a better place - even collaborating with local schools. And let's not forget the food - I had a salad, the lobster bisque, and what was probably a seasonal entree: acorn squash, filled with spaghetti squash, quinoa, and some other yummy things. The food was great, but it was the exceptional staff that make me want to tell everyone how wonderful they are and make sure it stays the top DoubleTree in the chain. read more

It was a long day and didn't want to leave the hotel for dinner. Had braised ribs, a beer and the included salad. All was excellent-fresh salad, well tossed and the braised ribs and veg was fantastic-best I've had since a place I know in Lake Tahoe.
