WORK REVIEW: poor leadership and HR enablement created a dysfunctional work * this is my opinion based on my experience working there* I was the assistant manager at Cafe Sweet Street for a little less than a year. I have a lot of experience in management in another industry but I was excited to get this role as I've always wanted to get into food. Upon starting, my experience was great. It's a fairly easy job and you also get a free meal each shift. That being said, when I was told about all the turnover they experienced - I was confused. I was primarily tasked with running the front of house. The General manager(GM) was also the head chef and primarily managed the kitchen staff. During my first few weeks there, the front of house girls trained me on what to do and it became clear very quickly, that no one had properly trained them. There were no standard expectations set for cleanliness, how food or drinks should be made, and the girls just kind of did whatever they wanted. I quickly took action to set expectations, improve customer service, re-train the girls on cleanliness issues and how to operate the coffee bar. Over the course of my year there, it became very clear to me that the GM was a primary issue. He was rarely present in the cafe, did not take the time to train his people or set expectations, yet, GM would seemingly get upset when things were not done to his liking. Other issues that I observed goes as follows: GM would be passive or speak condescendingly to the girls, make it difficult for more than one person to call off at a time, would not help the FOH staff out if they needed it, and would never take responsibility/accountability when he was wrong. GM would react unprofessional when a pregnant team member started to have a lot of appointments because it would mess up the schedule. Due to frequent call offs, there were many times where I had to close kitchen and FOH alone because GM could not be bothered to stay beyond his scheduled time. It was a running joke throughout all of Sweet Street that he was an asshole. And if you did not know, he is also related to the owners.. which he would often complain about the owner and how she was extremely difficult. Anyways, when I went to finally address these issues with him, he wanted to have a meeting with HR. When we had that meeting, it was a "surprise review" for me rather than a conversation to address some of my concerns as we had previously agreed on. GM took this opportunity to turn the issues on me and made it seem like I was the one who was not doing my job. Mind you, I did not have a single write up my whole time there. As a result of this "meeting" turned ambush, I decided to resign right then and there. When I finally got to addressing my issues, the head of HR (HHR) all of Sweet Street decided to dismiss all of them, gaslight me and continued to enable GM by avoiding any form of accountability. I want to make this abundantly clear: HHR only seems to care about protecting Sweet Street the company, not the employees. I have visited the cafe a few times since resigning because I still have old co-workers there who I visit and the food is decent. Well, my last time visiting the cafe The HHR approached me and asked to speak with me. When getting to her office, she very rudely flooded me with questions, one of which was "why would you ever come back to the cafe?"(mind you, I am a customer who has returned to the cafe several times to eat since resigning). When I told her that I still have old co-workers here and do not mind supporting the cafe by eating here, I was told "we don't need your support" and that I am not welcome here. This is both funny and ironic because the cafe does not seem to be receiving a lot of business most of the time and would more than likely benefit from my support. I suppose what I had addressed from the "meeting turned ambush" left an impression. Anyways, i will not be going back but this is an FYI to anyone applying. I have even heard that they already turned around a couple more people. read more

Cookie Review Only Pre-package cookies - before you go ugh I don't think so, think about how long they've been around, most grocery stores dedicate an entire aisle to cookies in just about any variety you can imagine. There are also plenty of startup companies that have established there place in the markets; Grandma's, Famous Amos, Mrs. Field and the list goes on and on the fore mentioned brands aren't a bad option and I guest could be considered premium cookies when compared to those prepackaged by elves and the most famous chocolate chip cookies who's mascot was a live-action superhero named Mort Meek, the odds that you haven't eaten these are practically zero. It seems all those cookies incorporated the famous chocolate morsel back in the day and most are created through engineered processes that have been totally automated and requires very little human intervention except of course the FQS departments who conducts the shelf life studies to ensure they can sit in the warehouses and grocery store shelves much longer the the cookies you mom created at home. Well let me reassure you all pre-packaged cookies aren't created equal - Sweet Street has seemed to have found a niche and probably stands alone for the most part at least until the next entrepreneur trumps them. I doubt if most consumers know what goes into the majority of the mechanically engineered cookies we have been eating for decades and although labeling has gotten so much better unless your a chemist you probably don't know what the ingredients are - I love the fact that Sweet Street has explained things - real butter dough - cage free eggs - non GMO's - no artificial additives it seems pretty simple to me and believe me the quality shows, they are big enough to share and are filled with big chunks of sustainable chocolate. Honestly l would buy these again but I highly recommend a quart of your favorite ice cold milk be it dairy or plant based... read more

My old company used to order desserts from here and I have very sweet memories of how yummy they were. Recently, we noticed that our favorite local restaurant served chocolate cake from Sweet Street. We decided to give it a try and fell in love with the cake. It's incredibly moist, not too sweet and the icing is delicious. It really is the perfect balance. We decided to order a chocolate cake from their bakery for Christmas. It was by far the biggest cake I've ever ordered with so many layers! It was delicious yet I could barely finish a whole slice it was that big. I can't wait to try some of their other cake flavors. Went with my husband for a bite to eat, but was disappointed. At first glance, the cafe is adorable and quaint, better suited to a person who is not in a wheelchair. The food was made in front of us, but I wasn't fond of the presentation. We paid 39.00 for jambalaya, egg salad on a croissant and 5 cheese Mac and cheese and cookies, plus we got two small hot teas-so the price wasn't terrible. What I thought was terrible was that we opted to sit outside on the patio and had to seat ourselves, clean off the table ourselves, etc. Someone should periodically be checking the tables and the chair arrangement when there are active customers about. There were flies attacking our food from all of the beautiful foliage growing to the side, and my husband is in a wheelchair, no one offered to bring our food out or help us bring it out ourselves! There was no tray or anything, the girls just left us on our own while we struggled with all our food and hot tea. The lady at the register was friendly. Also, the food was mildly cold, I had to ask for the Mac and cheese to be reheated and it didn't have much seasoning, I can deal with that but the service was sub-par and that was disappointing. The best part of the meal was the cookies, my husband enjoyed those a lot, and the egg salad was pretty good but I was fighting the flies for it. It would be nice if maybe their patio was screened in to eliminate the fly issue because food and flies don't mix. Ok, what am I missing here?! I get what this place is going for - it wants to be that trendy, neighborhood lunchtime spot with their handwritten chalkboard menu and hip employees who say cool things like, "Stay woke." But what's with the food? Everything is dry as balls. Are the meats cooked for 300 hours? Are they smoked, then grilled, then set out in direct sunlight over the weekend, and finally served up in their assortment of sandwiches and gyros? The meat is so dry it feels like crumbling sand in your mouth. Really lovely texture! On the plus side, it's a really great interior. There's plenty of space, and on warm, sunny days, plenty of outdoor seating is available. Sweet Street has always been known for their baked goods, including cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other confectioneries. Their foray into substantive lunch items is valiant but misses the mark. read more

Stopped in for dessert and we were so impressed with the pricing and quality! The macarons were delicious as usual. They were running a Spring Sale and we got a whole Caramel Carrot Cake for $8!! It looked so good we dug into a slice before it fully thawed. No regrets, it was rich even when it was partially frozen. The cake definitely rewards patience - it's so spongy and moist (especially for a carrot cake!) after it thaws. 100% recommended buying a cake from here. read more

Excellent food especially for the price. Wish they were open on weekends. Don't waste your money going to corporate chain restaurants like Panera and Chili's and Olive Garden with overpriced low quality food, but rather you should come here. I've had many of their salads and sandwiches. Good size portions and good quality food Plus variety of menu options. Their macaroni is better than at Say Cheese. Visiting family from Tampa, Florida and decided to stop in here. Ordered a Cuban sandwich, "world famous fries" and an opera cake. Everything was phenomenal. Living in Tampa, we have the second best Cuban food in America (second to Miami of course) and Cuban Sandwiches are a big deal down there. Cafe Sweet Street's Cuban was damned good. As good if not better than most of the Cuban's I've had in Tampa. Amazingly good. The fries were delicious, and the Opera cake (which is almost impossible to find anywhere because it's such a pain in the ass to make but is my fav) was superb. Definitely coming back next time I visit and all of you locals who may not have tried this place yet are just nuts. No picture of Cuban sandwich due to eating it too quickly. read more

This place was great!! It was located about 15 minutes (give or take) from Koziar's Christmas Village which is what we were in town for. It served its purpose for a quick, casual bite to eat before heading to our destination. They offer a lot of pay at the counter options including vegan and vegetarian ones alike! Build your own salad for just $6. Make your own veggies burger for $9 including fries and insanely drool-worthy desserts starting at just $2.50! I had a house made veggie burger the size of my youngest daughter's head! It was tough to finish because of its size, definitely not because of its taste! Yum! I added grilled delicious mushrooms. It was served with plenty of the usual accompaniments, and on on a toasty stamped bun. The kiddos had bowls of soup which was perfect on that chilly night....cream crab and corn basil and mushroom bisque. Both well liked and eaten rather quickly. For dessert we took home a fudge mini bundt cake and bought my parents a German Chocolate cake. The crew flipped over these decadent treats!! Definitely grab one at least to go! The place was really cute with chalkboard menus, exposed duct work, lofty vibes and fresh flowers on each table, although we were a tad confused as it's next to a factory. I'd give this place even more stars if I could. Beautiful outdoor seating area. BF and I went for lunch on a Thursday around 12 and had a burger and a Cuban sandwich. Burger was cooked to an absolutely perfect medium with juicy caramelized onions on top and delicious fries on the side. But honestly, the star of the show was the Cuban. I'm still dreaming about this sandwich. I could eat it every meal for the rest of my life and I'd die a happy girl. Best Cuban I've found in the area. 10/5 stars!! read more

Stopped here after reading Sari Marissa G's review and she was absolutely correct this place is great! It is in a somewhat out of the way spot next to their bakery but if you are in the Reading area it is worth seeking them out. Everything we ordered was delicious. We were there with our grandkids and they gobbled down everything. The hot dogs were huge and juicy. The hamburger on stamped toasted bread was juicy and delicious. The beef was from my favorite local butcher Dundore and Heister. It is nice that they are using locally sourced food. The corned beef special sandwiches we're excellent. My falafel sandwich was tasty on a large pita with all the fixings. The fries were a hit with the kids. My daughter could not get some things she really wanted like the Almond Sourdough Pretzel Tenders and pizza because the equipment to make them was down, but she really enjoyed the cheesesteak. Even though she asked for it without mushrooms it came with. The mistake was quickly corrected. All the food was promptly prepared by the friendly staff. The desserts were amazing. Some nice ladies at the table next to us insisted that the grands try the chocolate cake and treated them to a huge slice. It was amazingly rich. We picked up two large boxes of goodies from their outlet section, one was mini carrot cake squares,very moist and a box of peanut butter and jelly blond squares which I loved. The burger & the chicken sandwich had lots of flavor. Meals were served quickly after ordering & they were presented in fryer baskets. Great idea. However you can't necessarily eat out of them. The burger/sandwich needed to come out. Fries seasoned beautifully. My only tips would be that the chicken sandwich was a bit messy and should've been served on a plate. Secondly, on a hot sandwich, sautéed onions should also be hot not cold. Other than that...perfect! (I'm not gonna review the dessert I get 'cause Sweet Street doesn't make bad desserts) 4 Star. I wanted to like this place because they have good, well-known desserts, but the rest of the place fell short. My wife and i went for lunch on the weekend, and both decided on soup and half sandwich (so we could sample a bunch of menu items since it was our first time here for anything other than dessert), with a side of their "world famous" fries. First we were told the fries could not be ordered separately, that they only came with one of the burgers. what? For soup, their daily board had clam chowder and lobster bisque listed, but they only had grandma's chicken noodle. And if you wanted the half sandwich, your option was either tuna salad or chicken salad sandwich, thats it. After all that we switched to a make your own burger (mostly to get these "world famous" fries), and a salad. The burger was very good, juicy, hot! and can be made with all different toppings. the fries, however, were a big let down. Touted as "double fried", these were just about the limpest, mushiest fries i ever had. they were hardly fried once, much less twice. On a good note, the pricing was not as expensive as expected, given that this is a trendy coffee/sandwich shop type atmosphere and menu. Im sure we'll be back here for desserts, as most of them are usually a hit at parties and other get togethers, but i think next time we'll be skipping for lunch. Judging by the fellow customers during lunch time, this establishment also never disappoints for the local working class/office workers. I highly recommend a burger with mushrooms and a side of fries. Their garlic parmesan wings are also some of the best garlic parmesan wings I've ever had. Their pizza and breakfast items also look fantastic, however I have never tried them. Also, you can never leave here without desert. Their desert is fantastic, including the cheesecake. I also love the addition of an outside deck. It is a great spot to eat lunch when it is nice outside. This is by far one of the more interesting and exciting places to go for lunch in this area, especially considering it is surrounded by mediocre pizza chains and mediocre chinese restaurants. read more

Another wonderful lunch date with the gorgeous Kenisha. I am so happy that our original choice happened to be closed on a Monday so that we could venture over to the Sweet Streets Cafe! I'll be honest, after getting past the ooo factor of how cute this place was I wanted to simply dive into dessert. No, Toni, we need some real food first, and after about fifteen minutes of staring at the big chalkboard menu I finally decided on the gyro despite the failure of my gyro omelette I'd just experienced (see previous review). I all went with a latte and feta spinach pretzel roll just to try out. The gyro came with a side salad which was very nice. I actually forgot about the 10% off Yelp coupon, and after having already paid the ladies at the counter took the discount back for me. So appreciative. As far as the food went, the gyro was soo tasty and I loved the pita bread! It could've used a little more meat (but I'm a gym rat so that's always the case, no?) but the tzatziki was very flavorful! The latte however.. Was soo small for a medium and was more like a cappuccino with half foam. Next time I'll stick to a plain coffee. The pretzel wasn't anything special either and not even pretzel dough, definitely not worth the almost $4 price tag. Overall what won me over was the service and the dessert... Debbie answered so many questions and requests for me the entire afternoon with a smile on her face. And when I realized there were nuts in the pie I had already bought for my mother, she happily allowed me to exchange it for another dessert. That dessert was the dolce de leche cheesecake it was sooo delicious. The raspberry white chocolate was tasty as well but could have been tangier. Kenisha was also very pleased with her meal, and I can definitely say I'll be back for more, especially the sweet goodies :) read more

The food is divine! Divine, affordable, unique! Such a variety of foods and desserts--what a find! Also, the grounds are Lovely!! 5* for desserts. Totally. But the food is terrible. I got the almond and pretzel battered chicken fingers. I asked for a side of fries and was told they couldn't give me a side of fries. I pointed to the menu where fries are an appetizer, and the young lady behind the counter (politely) told me I could only get fries with the hamburger. So then I said "Great, give me a hamburger with fries, and hold the burger. I'll pay for the whole thing, just don't make the burger." She blinked a few times and said "I can't do that." So I gave up trying to get fries with my chicken fingers. I get the chicken fingers, and there is hardly any chicken at all in them. There are 4 or 5 on the plate, so I thought "Maybe it's just this one." Nope, they were all nearly devoid of chicken. And despite being deep fried in oil, they were super dry. It was like eating wood chips. The kids order the same thing, and they refused to eat them, even after drowning them in ketchup. My wife asked if the unsweet tea was brewed onsite, and they said it was, but when she ordered it, they handed her a bottle of some commercial brand ice tea. The prices were okay, maybe a little higher than I expected. For 2 kids, 2 adults, with 3 desserts came to around $70. So, for dessert, great. Otherwise, not awesome. read more
