This is the perfect neighborhood eatery. The key is the menu, and the quality of the food. It was located across the street from the venue we were playing at, and this was a pleasant surprise. I'm updating the review, I went back recently and order the basket of fries. Turns out sometime ago the fries were switched out and the waitress told me that it's a mix of fresh and frozen? But the fries were def the ones you buy and fry as opposed to fresh cut. Def recommend the restaurant changing the menu to not advertise fresh cut. I haven't been to The Pike in over a decade. There was a group of 6 of us visiting from out of town and decided to get wings at The Pike for old time sake. We were seated almost immediately. I ordered a dozen wings. I went with half mild and half sweet chili and an order of fries with cheese sauce on the side. I also ordered a Shirley Temple for my beverage. The wings were so good. Wish I would have gotten all of them mild because I forgot how good their mild sauce is. The fries were so so. The restaurant was clean and well lit and service was on point. What a place! I stopped in here for an appetizer and a few beers before the Death Angel show down the street at Club Reverb. Based on the number of metal-shirt-wearing folks at the restaurant, I figured I'd found the best local spot before the show. Next time I'm at the Pike Cafe I'll get more to eat; this time all I needed was something small and their bruschetta plate was just what I'd been in the mood for. I haven't had bruschetta this style before, with a bowl of the bruschetta components and the bread separately. It was unbelievably good. I wish I was eating it again right now, as I type this. I didn't try the fries, but my friend did, and he said they were some of the best fries he's ever had. The servers were friendly and beer prices reasonable (Sunday nights, Miller Lites $3!). The people next to me got to pull a number out of a raffle, or something like that, since they were wearing sports clothing. So, something to keep in mind next time. read more

Wow! Where in the heck did this place come from? I have seen a few shows at the Reverb and never noticed this place to pre-game and it is literally just down the street. Showed up 5:30 this past Friday and got one of the last remaining tables. In fairness, it was opening day for the Phillies and a very popular show at Reverb, so it was almost an hour wait by the time we left at 6:45. The place is huge and deceiving from the outside. A massive bar that smacks you as soon as you walk in the door and stretches all around the space with a ton of TV's. It's loud, so not the place for a first date or trying to play catch up with old friends/family. Our server was super nice, chatty and great with recommendations. My buddy had their standard buffalo wings and he loved them. They were on the smaller side, but not over priced. He ordered one of their burgers medium-rare and it was cooked perfectly. I had a build your own grilled chicken sandwich and they serve Bell and Evans chicken breasts, which is my favorite. Grilled onions, wild mushroom and jalapenos (pickled type) all at no extra charge. That was amazing. Huge portion of chicken and so flavorful. The only negative for me personally was the fries. Shoestring type and very light in color. Not super flavorful or seasoned. Great list of cocktails and craft beer on draft, plus so much more. What a hit! Can't wait to return. read more

Finally after hearing so much about this place was able to experience Shirley's sister establishment.. and I am so happy I did. Already on multiple occasions at that! The first time I went I grabbed their Vegan Sausage Wrap. It comes with a sun-dried tomato pesto and eggplant. I am pretty positive they use my favorite brand (Field Roast) for their sausage, and I am not even mad about it. Their beer selection is also always full of great options. I have had multiple hazy brews to choose from so far, and even when something gets tapped the replacement is usually stellar. Oh and the truffle fries... six dollars ladies and gents. Do it. But maybe plan for a run prior to. The staff is always friendly, even making sure to bring crayons and lollipops to the little ones (even though I wanted them too). I've sat outdoors and indoors, and the ambiance in both sections is great. Happy hour brings in a full crowd, however, so prepare to stand at the bar if you don't get there in time. read more

I am coming to the Pike Cafe a few months now, enjoyed the food and taste of it, however my last experience on Monday AUG-21 was almost horrifying. Baskets of food where delivered to the table, stacked into each other, i.e. basket of fries on top of a basket of wings. This is cross contamination as the baskets are being touched by many people, i.e. by waiters, previously touching money, etc. - you get the idea. This shall NEVER be happening. It does not take Rocket Science to know as waitstaff not to do such a thing. Serving trays are available, getting lazy does not get you revenue if you have to toss out contaminated food. Apply common sense, re-train your waitstaff and you are good to go! Don't ruin your business because you have flaws in your performance. read more

The two different burgers I've had there have been great. The Kobe burger and berks burger were flavorful and cooked to perfection. The fresh cut fries were not very crispy but still way better than frozen bags of fries. The wings were small. The sauce on them was lazily put on. If you have x amount of flavors, please have x amount of metal bowls and toss the wings in them so you coat the entire wing, and not just cover parts of them. read more

Pike Cafe the place to be Tuesday nights for Awesome lobster and fantastic crab bisque. The Pike Cafe is a local bar situated on Pike and Moss streets in NE Reading. The outside of the business is well maintained and does not look run down which happens from time to time in the city of Reading. When you walk in and take a seat at the bar or a table you are warmly greeted by your server who is happy to give you a menu and to get you a drink. I have stopped by on multiple times since I'm from the area usually when I visit home. I stopped by on a Tuesday due to their Lobster and clam special. Boy oh boy am I glad I did. Whoever the chef is at the Pike the guy/gal who buys the seafood knows what they are doing. The crab bisque we ordered seemed like they took crab meat from 8 crabs and melded it with a fantastic bisque. I have to say it was probably the best crab bisque I have ever had. We also ordered the steamed clams which were 50 cents a piece. It reminded me of the clam bakes that everyone in Reading has during the summer time. The clams came out seemed and ready to be dipped in butter. Finally the main dish I came for was the $16 lobster. This lobster wasn't a small $5 dollar lobster that you can buy at a Kroger grocery store this was a Maine 8 oz. lobster. It was a really good size and would put Red lobster to shame for the price. The lobster was cooked well and came out of it's shell no problem. Our waitress was very nice and was very prompt with the drinks and knew how to handle the table. Our bill over all plus drinks for the wife and I was about $50 bucks. We both got the lobster dish, shared the bisque and had some clams and a pitcher of beer. Also we found out that if you are with a table of six the Pike automatically ads a 18% gratuity which works for me. Overall the Pike cafe is a true Reading establishment and I encourage locals and visitors alike to stop by anytime and give this place a try for its food and atmosphere. read more

First I would like to say that my husband was very excited to eat at The Pike cafe. He eats here whenever he gigs at the reverb. We ordered wings well done, truffle fries well done, cheeseburger medium well. A garden salad. Drinks, Hersheys yuengling chocolate porter for hubby and I ordered a blue moon. The burger came out medium rare, more rare than medium well. The fries on the platter were soggy! They fixed the burger but dropped the same fries back in the oil so they came out like a fried pile of poop. The burger when cooked right was delicious, good quality meat. Now let's talk about the wings, smh. First I want to say when we walked into the restaurant I saw a young lady's plate that the wings were eaten to the bone and I was like damn these wings must be amazing because most people don't clean the bone like this. Well let's say that the wings were cleaned to the bone because there wasn't much meat on the wings. I don't like overly large wings but these wings came out looking like pigeon wings. These were the smallest wings I've seen in my life. Like baby chick wings. They use local organic wings, the waitress said. Ok. Maybe you shouldn't because it had no meat on it. Truffle fries were soggy and overly garnished with green onions. Half of the truffle fries platter were old fries that were like chips and new fries that were soggy. The garden salad was a salad. The balsamic dressing was TART no flavor or seasoning. The salad was fresh. No complaints there. The beer tap was either at the end of the keg on each beer we ordered or just dirty. We had both beers removed from the check and my husband ask for a Guinness instead. I just decided on a seltzer. The Guinness was not good either. The waitress came over to see how everything was and I explained our dislike for the product we were served. She said she would talk to the manger and came back shortly after. She started talking very loud, I immediately said your talking very loud as other patrons were starting to look over at our table. I didn't make a scene and didn't want to. She lowered her voice and told me what they would do to resolve the issue, she offered us a piece of chocolate cake. We didn't come here for dessert sweetie we came here for food! Needless to say she had to go get the manager who was also wearing a servers uniform. I decided to sit quietly and let my husband take it from here. I don't do well with people who don't use their common sense. Two beers were removed the soggy truffle fries as well. I decided to go out and have a smoke. Service is awesome weather take in or delivery never have any complaints about this establishment. I would reccomend the seafood soup to any one who loves seafood and the wings are always amazing. The staff that make this place go round and operate this day in and day out is impeccable. I don't condone recent findings about the owner, but just because he is the face of the business, doesn't mean it doesn't affect the employees that work there. A face of a business that did wrong will get what he deserves if the law sees it that way, but don't go and take money out of the staff's pocket that run that business. This has been a staple place since '85 and I'm sure the owners partners will get involved as well as he is not sole owner. Let's not all go boycotting the Pike. Having lived in the Reading area for over 10 years I always look forward to coming back and visiting here. If you look up consistency in the dictionary you would see the Pike. They do so many things well. We sat at the bar and there are TVs everywhere the eye can see. We come here for March madness too. The service at the bar is really good. They have a wide variety of local and national breweries on tap. Their prices are competitive and I hardly ever order anything out of the menu because I look at their nightly specials and everything always looks good. I had a steak with Gouda cheese and mushrooms with asparagus and mashed potatoes. You get a lot for your money. I have a garlic allergy and they went and spoke with the kitchen to make sure I was ok with my order. It was delicious. The vegan burger/sausage he makes from scratch can be made into a wrap or the bigger, more filling pasta dish.
