We were seated right away and I ordered the omelette, home fries, turkey sausage, wheat toast. The omelette was a little over cooked for my liking. I don't like my eggs brown. Home fries had a weird aftertaste. Overall the rest of the food was ok. I was surprised everything was served on one plate. Waitress was nice great conversation about the happenings in the area. I came here by chance since it was next door to Alladin Restaurant where we had spent 17 minutes with slow terrible service. We got up left to see The American Diner next door. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and seated. We got menus right away. The service by Thea was attentive. The diner looks a bite runned down but clean. We ordered an appetizer immediately since it had been sometime waiting at the other place next door and we were famished! We got our drinks and appetizer of three dolmas on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, feta, black olives, cucumbers. It was delicious!We ordered our entrees which to our surprise came with soup and salad bar! Everything at the salad bar was fresh, though small but had the basic toppings for a salad. I particularly loved the chicken orzo soup. My husband loved his Italian wedding. Neither were overly salted and the carrots in my soup tasted fresh as well as the potatoes (Not the canned type). Now here is the reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4, my entre was roasted chicken with homemade stuffing. The chicken tasted of freezer burn, old, dry and the flavor was only in the skin. It came with a lemony gravy which I didn't care for. The homemade stuffing had a texture that was similar of when you vomit a sandwich. The side I chose was Mac n cheese and it was lukewarm so I had to ask Thea to heat it up really hot. I took the grated cheese from the salad bar and mixed it in added salt n pepper but it just still wasn't good. The "cheesy" cream tasted like flour sauce and the cheese I added wasn't a cheddar so it didn't add too much flavor. My husband ordered the T-bone steak with mash potatoes and coleslaw on the side. The slaw wasn't sweet so we did like but did have to add salt. The steak was typical diner steak, dry. The mash tasted like box flakes made with only water, no cream or butter flavor. Not creamy at all! I can only recommend the salad bar and soups! If I ever go back I'd try the burgers, they looked decent. read more

After the rumbly previous owners... This is a great place to get a lot of your favorites. Not really a complaints but the twisted french fries are not very good. They are hard and not easy to chew with no teeth. They had almost 1/2 inch wide fries but they seemed to disappear? I met the owner and but about it. I have not been there in a few months because of 2 major surgeries. I will write a better review in the near future. read more

Was driving back from Syracuse, and happened to be going through West Reading Pennsylvania, and it was time for lunch. Due to the difficulties in the streets, we just happened by and found a place to park, so in we went. We were greeted quickly and seated. It looks like a typical American diner - lots of tables and a counter for counter service. The place was pretty busy, and it took a bit to get a server to the table. We ordered our drinks, which took a bit of time, and then ordered. I ordered the West Reading Burger and fries. The food came out quicker than expected given how busy the restaurant was. The burger was pretty good, but the bun was a little small for the burger. The taste was okay, maybe a little under-seasoned. It came with a nice pickle spear and a fairly good serving of French Fries. Once we were done, it took a while to get someone's attention to get the check, so perhaps they were understaffed a little. I was really disappointed with my experience here. I ordered a quesadilla as an appetizer and Eggs Benedict for my main dish, and almost everything about the meal was underwhelming. The Eggs Benedict was not much better. The eggs were undercooked, the meat was very chewy and hard to swallow, and the potatoes had absolutely no seasoning. I had to add salt and pepper just to give them some flavor, and even then they were still bland. The entire plate looked thrown together and messy. Customer service was okay at best. The server wasn't very engaging and seemed to rush me while I was still deciding what to order. She said she would give me time, but came back just a couple of minutes later, which made me feel pressured. read more

I ordered cheese quesadillas, those quesadillas were very skinny. it was 4 for $9 but they weren't full at all. so it wasn't worth it. Plus when they came out there was a tiny hair on my quesadilla. I also ordered a BLT club. There was no problem with that the flavor was cool, the only thing I would say is the bag of chips sitting in the middle of my 4 pieces of the BLT. Recently had lunch here. The staff was friendly and attentive but the diner was a bit dirty. We ordered panini sandwiches and were surprised to find that they weren't actually panini's. They weren't grilled or cooked on a panini press which is what makes a sandwich a panini. They also were not served on ciabatta, focaccia, or a baguette as one would expect from a panini. Instead they were served on a soft hamburger bun that hadn't been toasted. The construction looked rather sloppy, and they were in essence poorly made chicken sandwiches that were kind of bland and used low quality ingredients. In short, the menu didn't deliver what it had promised. On the bright side the diner did have exceptionally good French fries. That said, with so many other good places to eat on Penn Ave. I won't be back. read more

I definitely don't recommend coming here if you can avoid this place. Diner food is pretty simple and hard to mess up because of this reason, but this place has found a way to do it. I've been here many times for a grilled cheese and fries late at night and I will admit that is amazing. My experience today however was gross. My grandmom and I only decided to come here after we tried to go to taste of crepes down the street but it was closed for the day. My grandma ordered the cream cheese stuffed pancakes and I got the breakfast burrito. From the picture, you can tell what's wrong with the pancakes. It looks like leftovers from someone else but that's how it was served to us. Completely underdone as well they were almost raw. The breakfast burrito was actually decent with egg, sausage, cheese, and green peppers. The waiter asked if I wanted home fries with it because it's already included so I said sure of course. I was charged over $2 extra for the home fries and they were awful. I would stick to normal diner food if you're going to come here, and I would return only for the grilled cheese and fries that is my typical go-to. read more

Very old Diner on Penn Ave in West Reading PA. The place is very cool with good vibes. In the winter the windows are so big that on a very cold snowing day is the best place to come in and get cozy with a nice hot cup of coffee. The food is good for a diner. There is something about the old traditional East coast diners that you just can't beat or find in the South or Midwest. The West Reading Diner has been a must-stop anytime in the area. From the shiny silver exterior to the traditional interior this place is a natural for drawing you inside when you are hungry. The menu offers everything you can imagine from breakfast foods to dinners to pies fresh from the rotating pie display rack. My favorite over the years has remained the Philly cheese-steak sandwich served with fries and a dill pickle spear. It has a taste like you cannot find anywhere other than the east coast of Pennsylvania and the West Reading Diner has never let me down. Staff is mixed, some are super friendly and provide great service while others leave much to be desired and will leave you sitting for long periods of time while you wonder if they left or are on an extended break. Order accuracy is hit and miss, all of the food is good but at times you will get something that you never even looked at. They will make it right though and that is what counts. read more

Dined in on a Saturday night for a visit to the salad bar and a platter. My platter was suppose to be ribs and a half bar-b-que chicken. It was tired looking not as advertised, dried out and cold. I sent it back and received the same ribs with a well cooked half of chicken. My baked potato was already brown inside and had mold on the outside skin. I returned that disaster for a plate of French fries. I was really concerned about getting food poison from the above mentioned. The salad bar is already very small and limited. It was not well stocked and could have used a refreshing or a grand restocking. The Lobster bisque was tasty and had pieces of a "mystery" sea bearing supplement throughout. I knew it was not even close to lobster. Good Try! Service was ok until I had my issues and it was quickly turned over to management, who did their best to rectify this disgraceful dining disaster. I do give them credit and should have given the manager the tip I left for my server. This past summer the dinner platters were acceptable. I love finding an authentic diner that serves great simple food. This was not that. The place was packed mid-morning and we had to wait for a table. No problem, I thought that indicated how great the food must be. It was only due to a large party that was backing up the kitchen. I already knew what I wanted so ordering went quickly, but all around me I could hear waitstaff apologizing. The pancakes were thick and tasteless even with syrup, so was the Belgian waffle. I got really confused and parked in the wrong parking lot. Spent half my meal looking at my car and hoping it wouldn't be towed. Park on the left! Not the right! Everything on the menu is affordable, just like a diner should be, and it's HUUUUUUUUGE! On our first visit, I ordered chicken francese. This is the second diner I've run into that sold this dish and I loved it! Nice and lemony and creamy and it kept well overnight. The next time I munched on buffalo wings and those amaaaaaazing cream cheese stuffed slices of French toast, topped with gooey strawberries. It was perfect! Third visit, chicken parm with even more French toast! I was really digging the soup and salad bar. Even if I didn't know how I was going to eat it all in one sitting, I managed. They had some cucumber salad kind of thing. Really delicious. Quite the palate cleanser. Our first waitress was really nice.
