If you're in the Reading area and the diner you're at serves chipped beef on toast, you know it's the real deal. Although my partner claims to make a better at home, she still enjoyed her post-ultramarathon meal. The kids ordered dipping french toast sticks with a chocolate sauce, strawberry pancakes that looked like an ice cream sundae and regular french toast, all of which they enjoyed very much. Only one kid finished their meal. The Florentine omelet I ordered was done nicely, and the home fries were definitely filling. Our server was friendly, quick and attentive, making sure our coffee mugs were sufficiently warm, which is always appreciated. I have been coming to this diner for a LONG time. I'm 30 years old and still remember growing up coming to this diner as a kid. It has gone through a lot of changes over the years and recently I came here with my parents and boyfriend on a Saturday for lunch. It was busy (good thing)! Everyone was attended to from what I could see. Food was great, vibe was also great. Salad bar is delicious. I will always recommend this diner, never had a bad service here. FANTASTIC experience. John the waiter, he's an older gentleman and super tall, was great. He was funny, kind and was great at serving. The cook was very good as well. All the food came perfectly *steak was cooked PERFECT*. I was the designated driver tonight and got there tired and starving around 2 am and i couldn't have asked for more. Prices were good and it was nice to be in an old fashioned looking diner. My friends and I couldn't stop saying how impressed we were with the food and experience for it being a diner. DIRTY! Do NOT recommend! Worm found in seafood meal- NOT in the vegetables as the owner/manager tried arguing. Praying I don't get ill as a result of partial consumption!! Chocolate Milk was served to my daughter in a dirty cup. Tomatoes in salad bar were old and shriveled. Daughter's chicken tender had a strange stretchy hairlike thread in it. The only saving Grace this experience had was that of the kind waiter. Please avoid this place at all costs if you are looking to remain healthy and wish to eat an entire meal without being disappointed or grossed out!! The food is diner food. Nothing exquisite. My husband got the wings. They are not seasoned only tossed in buffalo. The grilled chicken sandwich was also bland and he got steak and eggs. The American cheese was laid on top of the eggs and looked like plastic. I'm sure it was Kraft American singles. The onion rings were very tasty though. The waitress was nice. The beef tips over noodles is gross, they put CINNAMON in the gravy for the beef tips! It was so strong that you could smell it when the dish was placed on the table! I thought that it was just me so I decided to give it a taste it and sure enough, the meat and gravy tasted like cinnamon! Immediately I asked for something else and I explained that it has cinnamon in it and they looked at me like there was something wrong with me and not the dish! We tried this place several times and the food is really good. Our problem is the staff. If they are not arguing with each other in front of the customers, then they are just not paying attention to the customer. Not cleaning off used plates, not checking on the customer, and then you can't find them. One time the waitress left and didn't tell anyone to take our table. We sat there for over 30 minutes for someone to come and help us while the rest of the staff stood around the salad bar chatting. This place is great! The hostess and waitress were pleasant and the table was cleaned before we were seated. It's so welcoming to see a shiny booth in a brightly lit diner playing classic oldies music! (There is also a section with chairs for people uncomfortable sliding across a banquette, by the way.) For our meals, we got the chicken and rice soup, an omelette, and a chef salad. Both of the mains were full of delicious, crisp, fresh vegetables. My friends and I happened on this diner since IHOP was closed for July 4th. We're from out of town and just wanted some late night food. We arrived around midnight- a group of us around 20 people. There were only a few other people in the diner. There was only one cook and one waitress, her name was Gina. She was the best! Gina was very sweet and made sure that she gave us her full attention. It took her a while to get to us and our orders, but that was to be expected. The orders came out relatively quickly, in about 15/20 minutes after she took them. There were a couple mistakes here and there, but we were happy overall with the food. It's classic diner food, nothing too fancy. I ordered an egg burrito, and it was delicious. Other people got pancakes, sandwiches, etc. and everyone enjoyed their food. The only thing I will say is that one friend and I both had a stomachache later that night. Everyone else seemed fine though. It was a fun experience for that night, and Gina really made a difference. Hey it's another diner, the physical space might be a bit deteriorated but certainly workable. The food is great and the staff is attentive, yet somehow there's a certain something here it's just a homey nice feeling diner with nice people working there and I really feel welcome every time I'm here. Prices are low however you have to remember that I'm judging it more for my Philadelphia values so maybe for the Reading area it's just average. My mom and her husband eat here easily 3 times a week. Breakfast on weekends and a least one night during the week for dinner. The staff know them and treat them with respect. I think they really enjoy eating here. On this last trip home I ate here twice with them. One breakfast and one dinner. Came in last night for the first time since I was a kid. Ordered breakfast and was sharing an order of wings. On the second wing I was eating, I noticed A FLY cooked into it. The first thing I did was laugh, thinking about the Yelp review to come. The second thing I did was take a picture. I showed the wing to the waitress, I believe her name was Rosa, and she took them back to the kitchen. A few minutes later she comes back and tells me they're making "fresh" ones. Like the wings I was served weren't fresh? Like I really want any wings after that? A place that serves food like that would probably just throw that single wing away and give me one more. I wasn't asked if I wanted to speak to a manager. I wasn't asked if I would like the wings taken off the bill. And they weren't. After we both already finished the rest of our meals, the "fresh" wings finally came out. So my girl just took them to go. The rest of the food was fine. Besides the wheat toast. It tasted stale. I thought, "how could a diner have stale bread?" But I guess they don't have enough customers who ask for wheat toast. I will avoid this place like the plague. The family took a trip to Koziar's Christmas Village to commence the holiday season. The lights were amazing and sparked the kid inside of me. Afterwards we were starving and looking for some food. After a search through my GPS, we decided on Route 61 Diner as it was reasonably close. The staff was surprised that we had a party of 7 and didn't know what to do initially. Keep in mind that the place was almost empty so it was not a challenge. And the server that we had was a pain in the ass. An older woman with enough character to fill up the USA network's lineup for next year. My younger brother has a tank for a stomach so we went with a combo appetizer to start. The wings, mozzarella sticks, onion rings and chicken fingers were good. We commented on the fact that we really were eating all over the place as I ordered the Western omelet and my younger brother a Greek gyro. We all were satisfied and picked at some dessert. The chocolate peanut butter cake was fantastic. Finally, I experimented with the hot sauce and added some blue dressing, parmigiana cheese, BBQ sauce and syrup to it. This diner is not far from my house so we dine here every now and then. Last week my husband got sick the next morning after eating here and we didn't think much into it. Today my daughter ordered the Florentine omelet with hash browns and toast. Now she is a vegetarian, and to our surprise there was a whole piece a chicken cooked in her hash browns. This disgusted her and she was sick to her stomach as she has not eaten meat in quite some time. When told about this they seemed to not care and offered $4 off her meal. Route 61 Diner has entered our regular rotation in the past couple of years. I like to say it's a couple of notches above other diner food. Anyone who skips this place, or other family run diners, for something like applebee's really does not know what they are missing. On top of that, most reasonably priced place you'll ever find. A couple of slight weak points - the service is generally quite good, but once in a while, we are stuck with a dud of a waitress, who seems to disappear for long periods of time when I have an empty soda glass. Also, while the soups are good, they are not great and lack variety - seems like the same 3-4 recipes in rotation without any creativity. On the other hand, 61 has a number of dishes that satisfy the aspiring foodie and should warrant your attention. You almost can't go wrong at 61, it's kid friendly, has a huge menu, and good prices. read more

Excellent place to go if you want to get Covid. November 2020, as rates are skyrocketing, they advertise "outdoor seating." It's basically an uncovered table with no lighting. Inside, at the salad bar (yes, they are still operating a salad bar), customers are allowed to serve themselves soup and salad. No staff person serving or monitoring. Gloves were provided, but no one stopped the patron who served herself soup with no mask on. Breathed her germs all over the food and utensils. Gross. This is why PA has 6000 new cases a day. No one cares and businesses allowing it to happen. My waitress, Faith, was nice and Covid compliant. Another waitress had not yet heard that the nose is also part of the respiratory system and should be covered. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. The burger was undercooked. Bun was cold and stale. Just yuck. read more

Ummm, this place is not 24/7. They turned the "open 24 hours" sign off the minute we pulled in the parking lot. The ladies sitting at the front were rude. They said "our sign is off cause we close at 9" but their website, Yelp, and google all say they are open 24 hours. What a waste of commercial real estate. read more
