Pad broccoli: carrots, onions, and broccoli in oyster sauce

Thai Basil, how I have missed you! I was a little hesitant after all these years if the food was still amazing and it is still amazing!! I was having some trouble ordering online, so I decided to go there and order in person. I was warmly greeted and given a menu. I decided on the pad broccoli. It is simple, just broccoli, onions, and carrots in oyster sauce; but it had tons of flavor. I absolutely loved the oyster sauce, I wish that there was a little bit more of it, but it was good the way it was as well. The medium spice was just enough and popped well with the vegetables. Again there could have been more broccoli, but still that did not stop the pad broccoli from being an amazing dish!! I will be back for this and for the Thai Basil!

When you go to ASU or work there, you get used to a lot of "regular" restaurants in the area. I've been working at ASU for a long time, and for many of these years, Thai Basil was right near my office. I have enjoyed the consistent tasty food and service from Thai Basil over the years (even if the prices have increased). While I no longer work right near there, I happened to be nearby and enjoyed a delicious meal with two colleagues and got my "usual" meal. While there are certainly many dishes that can be ordered from the menu, most customers simply choose their protein (chicken, pork, beef, vegetables, tofu, shrimp, or seafood), the spiciness (no spicy, mild, medium, hot, or Thai hot), and then the dish itself. For me, I choose the Thai Fried Rice with Chicken (fried rice with garlic, egg, green peas, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, and onions), which comes with a cup of soup and mini vegetable egg roll. While I used to have to wait until ordering before the soup arrived, nowadays, the soup arrives even before we place the order. I guess all dishes come with the soup (which is a good first course). I've clearly been coming for a while as all of the $11.95 dishes used to be $7.95 when I first started going. Then again, it's even more if you order online. Speaking of online, you can get five percent off all orders placed on the website (https://orderthaibasilruralrd.com). You can also order delivery through the website, which I have yet to try. There is a lot of other helpful information on the website including the hours, which are daily from 11 AM to 10 PM. It's nice it is open that late as the students probably go across the street and enjoy some Thai for late evening dinner (which I personally stick with lunch there). As a restaurant with good food, good service, and usually a reasonable wait time once food is ordered, I recommend this Thai Basil restaurant to anyone in the area of ASU Tempe, especially near Apache and Rural.

This place was a last minute lunch decision and I'm so glad I found it! I was sat immediately, and given a complementary cup of soup. I ordered the green curry lunch plate and it came with rice and an eggroll. The curry was amazing! I asked for medium heat and it was perfect! My server was great, she was very attentive to me, and my order came out very quickly. It is a nice clean restaurant and I will definitely be back again! The parking is a little bit limited right now because there is some roadwork in front of the restaurant, but it is worth the trouble to find a spot.

Ordered pad thai, it was really bad. $20 and tasteless, go to the other pad thai down the street. Ordered beef and was given a 80% tofu -20% beef mix. Was tasteless, really disappointed. Called the restaurant and they did nothing to help. Huge waste of money.

Dinner pickup to satisfy a Thai craving! The Yellow Chicken Curry & Tom Kha Soup were done medium spicy which was the perfect amount of heat! Service was friendly & efficient at pickup. Definitely worth a try!

The restaurant had a very welcoming vibe with nice thai decorations. The server was friendly and attentive. My fiancé and I ordered the beef salad, bbq chicken, shrimp and tofu pad thai. The beef salad was very flavorful with a large serving amount of beef. The bbq chicken was. delicious with the sauce. The pad thai was a little on the bitter side. The pad thai was not my favorite dish but everything else was delicious.

Had some time in between classes and decided to stop by. I got the papaya salad with a medium spice level. For a medium spice level at a Thai place, I did not find it to be that spicy. Though it was a bit pricey (I paid just a little over $15), the portion size was massive and the flavor was good, though very mild. The service was very nice and they would check up on us very frequently.

First, I drove to several places based on what Yelp said would be opened. This was open so I decided to them a try. I bought the silver tom yum soup and fried spring rolls. The soup, if you choose mild, is very mild. The broth is very southing, something I'd like if I were sick. There is a healthy bit of vegetables... mushrooms, cabbage, baby corn, zucchini, carrots, and broccoli. The soup by itself doesn't need the noodles and is very filling.

Not happy to give this place a poor review. I love Thai food and know what it's supposed to taste like. The only good thing is food is prepared quickly. But the way they've cut corners on their dishes has unfortunately really, really impacted the quality of their food. Drunken noodle - Taste was so off. I noticed color looked a little weird, thought nothing of it. But I couldn't taste the palm sugar or oyster sauce or anything that usually goes into pad kee mao. Noodles had been overcooked and no longer chewy, only disintegrated in your mouth with an unpleasant texture. Veggies cut poorly (chunky), seemed more appropriate for a stir fry. Because of this, some of them were cooked unevenly. Not a good order. Mango sticky rice - it's hard to mess this up, but this could also be improved. Mango was nice, but this was the blandest mango sticky rice I've ever had. I'm pretty sure they only used coconut milk to top the rice, and maybe cooked the glutinous rice with some minor sweetener. Mango was nice and ripe but I feel the rest of the dish was lacking in support. Just a really disappointing experience with Thai Basil here. To me, this is another symptom of a restaurant located in a college town. There are many other thai places in the area that I'll explore instead.

I work about a 5-minute walk from Thai Basil, so my coworkers and I frequent this restaurant for takeout. I love Thai Basil's curry! I prefer green curry, but the yellow curry (pictured) is also excellent. Both the curry flavor and consistency are spot-on with a generous portion. I enjoy the pad see ew and pad thai as both have rich flavors. However, in general I find the vegetables to be a bit too crunchy/undercooked.

Depending on what you get, Thai Basil can be pretty amazing. My fav dish of theirs is the chicken katsu or chicken curry. Some dishes are more expensive and as a college student, I'm always looking for the biggest bang for my buck. It's best to get takeout from Thai Basil, you will get so much more food. It's a 5/5 for takeout and the dishes i mentioned but of course I have to take the atmosphere into consideration. The restaurant is quite dim and service can be slower if you do order at a busy time. The staff is extremely sweet though and would always love to offer suggestions.

Best location I have tried so far! I put in a pick up order and it was ready when I arrived about 15 minutes later. The food was still hot when I got home about 25 minutes later! I ordered pad Thai, pad see ew, spring rolls and red curry. The pad Thai is the best! I ordered it with chicken and it was delicious. The portion was so large that I only finished half of it. The pad see ew was ordered with tofu for my sister and she enjoyed it! The red curry was ordered with chicken and my boyfriend loved it. It came with white rice. The spring rolls were tasty with the sweet and sour dipping sauce. They gave us some extra spring rolls I'm pretty sure! And lots of extra dipping sauces. That was a lovely surprise! Love this place!

Not normally someone that enjoys Thai food and I believe it's because I have never really had it authentically. But let me say the food here is beyond amazing. I went home feeling sick but not because of the food- because I couldn't stop eating it . And the service was top tier. Got asked for what we wanted fast and got our food fast. A place that can get you good food in a short amount of time is always a plus. Great place to go with family and prices are bad. Definitely recommend the coconut soup and drunken noodles or the spring rolls!! Also their fried bananas!!Literally anything on the menu 100% coming back anytime I am in the area!! read more

I had quite a delightful lunch here today with four colleagues. It's a quick walk from the ASU Tempe campus. The service was attentive and allowed us to split the bill 5 ways. The food was EXCELLENT, my Pad Thai (highly recommended by a friend) was ordered spicy. It had a wonderful spicy kick. There was more food than I'm used to having for lunch so I would have taken leftovers were it not for an afternoon full of meetings. We had a lovely lunch with time to chat. GREAT place. read more

This was my first time here & WOW!!! I can honestly say everything from beginning to end was Delicious!!! I ordered the chicken chow mein lunch special & my fiance ordered the rice noodles with lamb. Each dish was superb! I ordered mine with mild sauce and he ordered his at medium, which neither was really hot, which was perfect! The chow mein came in a big portion which was awesome....especially considering the fact that it was the lunch special. We then ordered the Fried Banana & Ice cream for dessert. Let me just say that I told my fiance he had to learn to make this because it was soooooo freaking good! The ice cream paired with the banana had a nice touch since the banana was fried & warm and the ice cream was cold. Very good! The service was very fast, the waitresses & waiters were extremely nice & very patient. We did not feel rushed at all. We will definitely be back! read more

Mixed bag. Two curries were great, very flavorful and large portions. The pad Thai shrimp was very greasy. Restaurant was nearly empty and yet there was no service! Asked up front for separate checks but of course that wasn't done and we had to wait for bill to be split. Just trying to get our bills was a painful experience. Not sure what the deal was read more

I came in yesterday, it was very quiet and they have enough shade inside the restaurant so I imagine in the summer it doesn't get too hot inside the restaurant. Our waitress who was the chef's/cook's daughter was really pleasant to speak to. She spoke well and was just very friendly but not over the top. I ordered a medium tofu pad Thai and "fresh rolls" which were spring rolls. My mom ordered beef fried rice. It was all really great and came out very quickly. My only issue was my nephew's water cup had a lip stain on it. I wiped it off with a napkin. Other than that I enjoyed my time here. read more

Do you have Thai-me to hear about my neighborhood Thai restaurant? I come here on a regular basis and order my favorites: Chicken Phad Thai and Panang Curry! We also got chicken Fried Rice this time. If you're in the mood for Thai and are in the area, Thai Basil is a safe bet! I've almost always had a good experience with quick service and attentive staff! If you're in the mood to try a curry try the Panang curry! It's sweet yet spicy and goes great over a side of rice. All the dishes we ordered came with cooked veggies mixed in including carrots, red pepper, green beans, broccoli, and much more! Date night or just eating for 2? Try my personal twist: My partner and I always order the Chicken Phad Thai and Panang curry. We put the Phad Thai over a bed of rice and drizzle the curry on top for extra flavor. It's my favorite combo and only about $24 after tip! You'll have plenty of left overs. Great date place or for just a night on the town. They also have a decent selection of beers and other favorite drinks! Overall a great place to cure that Thai craving! read more

Omg, the food is so good. I'm addicted to ordering take out from this place. The food tastes amazing. I always get the Tom Ka soup with chicken or shrimp and the Panang curry with chicken or shrimp. Thai Basil is a staple of our (better) college lives.. except maybe the sakis... but we've all been there. We used to come here all the time from campus. The staff is friendly and the service is quick. Thai Basil has always been a meeting place to get back together with our group of friends spread across the valley. I'm a huge fan of the standard Pad Thai with spicy sauce on the side. I add my own and usually end up making it hotter than I want every time... but nobody's perfect, right!? haha Definitely take a stop in. It can get busy when ASU is in session and parking can be limited, but it is worth a visit if you can make it in. read more

Ok went back to this place last week. Got the standard go to plate of Chicken Pad Thai. While I dont consider myself a Thai food snob, this place was not the same as the last time I went there. This location has been consistent over the years. The restaurant is very clean and the serving staff are friendly. They follow up with you appropriately. Thai Basils has been efficient with take out orders which is why we have been doing this more often. They pack everything neatly and it helps keep everything warm. They also include the sauces and utensils. I call ahead and order my go-to order which is: spring rolls appetizers, Thai signature dish with chicken and Pad Thai. My order is ready for pick up in 15 min. The dishes are flavorful and come in large portions. I can easily save half for lunch the following day and still be as flavorful as the day I ordered it. I love a place that is nearby and remains the same each time I visit and will continue to order from this location. read more

I ordered delivery, and have never eaten in the restaurant before - so can't speak to that, but I will give a review of everything else! I ordered the fresh salad roll with tofu, Drunken Noodle with beef and Thai fried rice with Tofu. All of them were delicious! I would have maybe liked a little more flavor in the fried rice, but it was still good. I usually judge a Thai place by their drunken noodle, and it got my vote! They got my order correct, even with some special substitutions, I got my food very quickly and the food was piping hot! Oh, also, portion sizes were excellent. I would definitely order from here again! read more

Literally the best yellow curry I've had in AZ. We moved from SF and I'm super picky on Thai food. This place is delicious. And the food and service have remained excellent through these tough times. Their crab fried rice is pretty incredible too. It's not always on the menu so just ask-they've always said yes! read more

I travel a lot and I have sampled many Thai restaurants over the years and this place ranks towards the top. I give it four out of five. And the price is fair. It's located by Arizona State University in Tempe. So they cater to the "young, demanding" crown, who want good food on a student budget. read more

My go-to Thai place! I have always loved Thai food and am so glad I found a great place right by my house. I am not sure if all Thai Basils are affiliated being that I have been to a Thai Basil by my house in Colorado with a similar menu and both have been great. I always get the Masaman Curry which they do not disappoint. What I can really appreciate from this place is their consistency. I have been to quite a few places in the valley that does not have consistency in their flavors which is the reason I have not returned back. Thai Basil's Thai Iced Tea is also delicious and refreshing which I highly recommend. The parking for this place is very convenient and I have never found it to be an issue which is great being that sometimes parking around this area can be iffy. I highly recommend for anyone that wants to get their Thai fix for a good price too! read more

My favorite Thai place. I mostly come during the day for lunch dates. It's never too busy (but keeps a steady stream across the street from ASU) and the service is always great. The food is the star of the show. Everything I've ever ordered has been delicious. The vegetables are always fresh and crisp. The sauces are savory and seasoned to perfection. The lunch specials are the best. They start with a veggie broth cup of soup. Then each entry comes with a pile of steamed rice and a mini egg roll. I can't say enough good about it. So yummy! read more

This Thai Basil location is my favorite restaurant around the ASU campus. I have been eating here for many years and always leave very satisfied. I'm so picky about my pad Thai and hands down, out of all the Thai restaurants I have experienced, they are the best. No ketchup in the sauce. No slimy chicken. Super tasty, authentic, and spicy! Fresh ingredients you can just really taste the quality. I don't live close to them but it's worth the drive when you know you absolutely love the dish you're about to order. Definitely my go to Thai place at the moment. read more

I love this place. The staff are friendly and funny, the food is good and it's super close to campus. I ordered the Pad Thai and it was so good. So is the Thai and spicy fried rice. Anyway, the Pad Thai is one of the best I've ever had. Seriously. I mean, it's nothing like in California or Thailand...but for Arizona Asian food, it's super delicious. Anyone just come here to enjoy their food. That's all. They have great food, great service and even though they are close to ASU Tempe, they don't seem to be that busy. Just come here. Supporting a local business is nice, and supporting a local business that has done so well for itself that it's expanded, heck yes! Daily specials are a plenty, and most locations have a great beer and wine selection. Happy Hour is 3-6pm... and before that you can get a pretty great lunch special for about seven bucks. Any Thai novices out there will be pleasantly well fed, and content here. read more

I always get their drunken noodle with chicken and extra veggies. It is amazing!! I also love their Thai coffee. It is pretty good for a Thai chain restaurant and super cute inside with a modern romantic ambience. read more

I've placed the same to-go order many times through the University location and never had any issues. After tonight I don't think I'll be returning to this Rural location. I ordered a Thai Iced Tea and when I got home I realized they gave me a Thai Iced Coffee (good, but not what I ordered). I also ordered the Red Curry as usual, which was also good but more than half the rice was over-cooked and mushy. I got the Coconut Ice Cream w/ Purple Sticky rice as well, and the entire portion of forbidden rice was extremelyy mushy. Never the case on University. Worst of all, I took one bite of the forbidden rice and could immediately taste the styrofoam it was served in (think cherry cough syrup ). Clearly it was placed in the foam when the rice was was too hot. The ridges inside the bottom of the styrofoam melted into a smooth flat surface, which confirmed my suspicion. Still trying to get this taste out of my mouth... I realize you can't always expect the same quality/freshness when ordering to-go, but I order Thai fairly often from numerous places and have never experienced issues like these. Hopefully it doesn't happen often, I'd like to believe my experience was extreme and could have been much better if I dined in... read more

For drinks, we both ordered Thai Tea, which was properly made. It is served in tall jars, and neither of us could drink it all. If you have real Thai food that is Thai hot, Thai Tea will get rid of the heat on your palate in less than a minute. Came here for lunch on Tuesday around 1 PM. The room looks newly furnished and AC is running good. Sat down by the window and met with super friendly server. He explained the lunch special deal and I ordered the Basil with pork. Water came first, followed by a bowl of soup (veg soup). No longer than 7 mins, my lunch came and I began! It was a big plate for lunch and totally worth the price. Great Thai food, I love Thai food so I am a little picky and I feel like I've had a few great places and this one was just below them. Don't get me wrong, very good Thai food compared to most but not exceptional! I love their pad Thai, if you like it spicy let them know. I asked for it to be an 8 out of 10 as far as spicy and it seemed more like at 5 out of 10. Still as far as pad thai's go this is good and is a good healthy portion and will definitely fill you up! If you go during lunch seating is limited and it is very busy so try and go just before or after the lunch rush. The staff is also very, very nice!!! read more

Pretty decent curry but I've had better. The prices are a bit high. One wouldn't pay that much for the same Red Curry dish in Chicago. The wait was about 45 minutes because the place was pretty busy. The seating is a bit cramped and we got stuck in a really awkward spot where we couldn't move our chairs so they were tilted diagonal to the table. Overall, it's an alright place but I probably won't be back because there's too many better places in the neighborhood. read more

The atmosphere is one of my favorite things about the place. Simple, yet effective - it doesn't seem like a typical place you'd find within walking distance of the university (meaning not a college bar/diner place). The first dish of any thai restaurant I try is usually the pad thai, and although great portions, it wasn't as flavorful as others I have tried. Still good though. My mom loves the panang - she gets it xtra spicy. I love their coffee there as well. read more

Delicious! I just got back from Thailand so I was hesitant to try their take on a couple dishes I enjoyed on my trip. But all were very comparable to the real deal. I recommend their pineapple fried rice and Pad See Ew. Their Thai tea is also super tasty. read more
