Absolutely loved my experience at Thai Basil. The staff was very welcoming. I felt right at home. The atmosphere was the conversational. Not too loud. But not too silent either. Excellent place to eat with a small group of friends. The food was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I ordered the drunken noodle with shrimp and it had the perfect balance of spice and savory flavor. The shrimp were cooked really well too. The potstickers were delicious and had a great crunch, and the crispy sweet potatoes were such a nice touch and incredibly tasty. Thai Basil, how I have missed you! I was a little hesitant after all these years if the food was still amazing and it is still amazing!! I was having some trouble ordering online, so I decided to go there and order in person. I was warmly greeted and given a menu. I decided on the pad broccoli. It is simple, just broccoli, onions, and carrots in oyster sauce; but it had tons of flavor. I absolutely loved the oyster sauce, I wish that there was a little bit more of it, but it was good the way it was as well. The medium spice was just enough and popped well with the vegetables. When you go to ASU or work there, you get used to a lot of "regular" restaurants in the area. I've been working at ASU for a long time, and for many of these years, Thai Basil was right near my office. I have enjoyed the consistent tasty food and service from Thai Basil over the years (even if the prices have increased). While I no longer work right near there, I happened to be nearby and enjoyed a delicious meal with two colleagues and got my "usual" meal. While there are certainly many dishes that can be ordered from the menu, most customers simply choose their protein (chicken, pork, beef, vegetables, tofu, shrimp, or seafood), the spiciness (no spicy, mild, medium, hot, or Thai hot), and then the dish itself. For me, I choose the Thai Fried Rice with Chicken (fried rice with garlic, egg, green peas, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, and onions), which comes with a cup of soup and mini vegetable egg roll. While I used to have to wait until ordering before the soup arrived, nowadays, the soup arrives even before we place the order. I guess all dishes come with the soup (which is a good first course). I've clearly been coming for a while as all of the $11.95 dishes used to be $7.95 when I first started going. Then again, it's even more if you order online. Speaking of online, you can get five percent off all orders placed on the website (https://orderthaibasilruralrd.com). You can also order delivery through the website, which I have yet to try. There is a lot of other helpful information on the website including the hours, which are daily from 11 AM to 10 PM. It's nice it is open that late as the students probably go across the street and enjoy some Thai for late evening dinner (which I personally stick with lunch there). As a restaurant with good food, good service, and usually a reasonable wait time once food is ordered, I recommend this Thai Basil restaurant to anyone in the area of ASU Tempe, especially near Apache and Rural. read more

This place was a last minute lunch decision and I'm so glad I found it! I was sat immediately, and given a complementary cup of soup. I ordered the green curry lunch plate and it came with rice and an eggroll. The curry was amazing! I asked for medium heat and it was perfect! My server was great, she was very attentive to me, and my order came out very quickly. It is a nice clean restaurant and I will definitely be back again! We drove almost 40 minutes to come here based on my sister-in-law's recommendation, and she was with us as well. When we arrived, one of our little girls was crying (as kids sometimes do). My plan was to quickly go inside, find a table, and then come back out to calm her before seating the rest of the family. Instead, my sister-in-law politely asked a staff member for two high chairs and a place to sit. The lady assisting us (I'm not sure of her name) told us that we could only sit outside because our child was crying, and that they didn't want that inside. I was honestly shocked and didn't even know how to respond. Without arguing, we simply went outside and seated ourselves, but the damage was already done. Someone completely ruined our night after a long and rough day my wife had with the kids. This review isn't about the food -- we never even got that far. It's 100% about customer service. I am a business owner myself, and my customer service runs from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM every day. I have never treated customers this way, especially families with children. Not happy to give this place a poor review. I love Thai food and know what it's supposed to taste like. The only good thing is food is prepared quickly. But the way they've cut corners on their dishes has unfortunately really, really impacted the quality of their food. Drunken noodle - Taste was so off. I noticed color looked a little weird, thought nothing of it. But I couldn't taste the palm sugar or oyster sauce or anything that usually goes into pad kee mao. Noodles had been overcooked and no longer chewy, only disintegrated in your mouth with an unpleasant texture. Veggies cut poorly (chunky), seemed more appropriate for a stir fry. Because of this, some of them were cooked unevenly. Not a good order. Mango sticky rice - it's hard to mess this up, but this could also be improved. Mango was nice, but this was the blandest mango sticky rice I've ever had. I'm pretty sure they only used coconut milk to top the rice, and maybe cooked the glutinous rice with some minor sweetener. Mango was nice and ripe but I feel the rest of the dish was lacking in support. Just a really disappointing experience with Thai Basil here. To me, this is another symptom of a restaurant located in a college town. There are many other thai places in the area that I'll explore instead. read more

Depending on what you get, Thai Basil can be pretty amazing. My fav dish of theirs is the chicken katsu or chicken curry. Some dishes are more expensive and as a college student, I'm always looking for the biggest bang for my buck. It's best to get takeout from Thai Basil, you will get so much more food. It's a 5/5 for takeout and the dishes i mentioned but of course I have to take the atmosphere into consideration. The restaurant is quite dim and service can be slower if you do order at a busy time. Tried and true, Thai Basil. We have so many options in Tempe for Thai but I'm fairly set on this location next to ASU (even during the school year). Usually I order online or carry out, and with both options, it's never taken forever! Service is so fast. Anytime I go in for carry out there's always a decent crowd there. I know the lunch specials are amazing for the price just as in general for combo meals. Usually I order Pad Thai or yellow curry and a side like pot stickers or spring rolls... good for a few meals. I know people can be quite particular for spice level... even on the low end (what I order) it is pretty flavorful and not overtly spicy. Spring rolls are better than the pot stickers. The food here is great. I love pretty much anything I get. The only food I haven't got from here is the yellow curry and the red curry. I was told that the yellow and red curry taste like the green curry. I usually get the green curry. The spice level varies with what item you get. The curries tend to be more spicy than the noodle or rice dish even if I ask for the same level. So, a medium curry is spicier than a medium pad Thai. I also like the red chili sauce that comes in the container. The red chili sauce just adds something good to the meal. During lunch the place can get really crowded. I am not sure if this restaurant is a chain or not. There are other locations called the same thing in other parts of the valley. I will have to try the other flavors of curry eventually to see if they taste different. I know they have different vegetables added. The Thai ice tea here is also tasty. Super delicious Thai food! Weeknight around 8:45 pm and they were still pretty busy! We were seated right away and given menus. They have quite a selection of dishes, so narrowing down to what we wanted was hard. We ended up getting a papaya salad, (medium spice) a chicken pad Thai, (medium spice) crispy spring rolls, and a Thai tea. The server was friendly from the start and she kept our water cups filled. We were seated in the back cozy area and there were other patrons there as well. We received our spring rolls hot and crispy, and they were really good. Not too long after, our food. In my personal opinion, this is a restaurant worth recommending, located to the right of ASU, which is very convenient for me to visit regularly. Additionally, there is a parking lot on the right side of the restaurant, making it more convenient for those with cars. The first meal I had after coming to the United States was at this restaurant and that meal left a deep impression on me. The menu offers a diverse selection, and this time I ordered the Green Curry and Crystal Noodle. The curry has a slight spiciness, but it also has a hint of sweetness that I find acceptable. The Crystal Noodle has a very good flavor, with the noodles being very soft and slightly salty. Overall, I really enjoy their dishes. Maybe my Thai food standards are too high being from Seattle and spoiled with the incredible International District and authentic Thai food, but I am new to town and ordered from Thai Basil based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews. It was the worst Thai food I've ever had. I ordered half the menu to try the noodles (which were soggy), curries (cold and flavorless) and even the appetizers. The curry was passable, but the Phad Thai noddles were soggy and the sauce was not correct either. Just looking at it you could tell something was wrong, hands down worst I've ever had. read more
