I have lived in Katy for six years and was always temped to stop in Texas Tradition to satiate my hunger for a non chain local place. Upon entering it checks the box, particleboard walls, super friendly staff and local items on display. However the positives end there. The first surprise are the prices. $14 for a hamburger fries and a drink. Thinking that it must be a great hamburger that you can't get anywhere else I decided to try that. It turned out to be shockingly disappointing. What makes it worse is the ketchup was a super bargain brand that you probably get from Dollar Tree. You would think for that price you could supply a real brand ketchup. Ended up costing over $17 for a simple burger fries and a drink. The quest for a good local place continues. read more

Sooo... I came upon Texas Tradition by mistake yet this mistake happened to work in my favor. Texas Tradition is a local spot here in Good'Ole Katy, Texas yet it has been a hallmark since 2002. Fresh meat/Never Frozen as this little hole in the wall is know for there Burgers and Steaks. Today I had a Bacon Jalapeño burger and boy could you taste the freshness. Very aptly named - the menu was filled with fairly priced small town diner Texas comfort food. Chicken fried steak meals or sandwiches, po-boys, steaks, Frito pies, you name it. The menu was extensive. Plus they had a very solid kid meal deal for $5.75. We split a burger, fries and a bowl of chili. The meal didn't disappoint. The chili was delicious as was the burger. I wish we had a small town diner like this closer to my neighborhood, but we do find ourselves in Katy from time to time. I will remember this place and reccomend it. We were in the area for the Christmas festival by the city hall. We hadn't had lunch and got here at 3:30pm. By 4:40 when we left it was like 80% full already. I wondered if that was local business or business from the festival which ended at 5. I suspected it was local business though, since they had food trucks at the festival. This is an authentic Texas diner and comfortable seating with a very family friendly atmosphere. I reccomend. read more

Sad to update, but this place is so inconsistent. The service is also horrible. No one greets you or even acknowledges you. The chicken fried steak was not good the last two times I ordered it. Chewy and the gravy lost all the delicious flavor. I don't know if it's a chef thing, but a restaurant should be consistent. Last time I was there I stood at the "bar" waiting for someone to give me my to go order for over 10 minutes. It was just sitting there and no one helped me. That was the last straw. After reading about this place many times in a foodie group we decided to take a trek and experience this place for ourselves. Since the place was packed we figured it was an endorsement for how great it was. We were mistaken. We both ordered the small portion chicken fried steak. The breading was limp and bland. The country gravy tasted like white paste. The meat was unflavored as well. My wife had the fried green tomatoes and was underwhelmed...bland. We decided to take a chance on dessert after the server recommended we try one of them. We chose the German chocolate cream pie. Turns out the portion was huge but it was a mouthful of chocolate pudding with some coconut sprinkles. We are still in a Pandemic and the place was packed with no spacing. In addition the owner and what I assume were family members we not wearing masks. I saw the lady owner in the kitchen mixing something and she was still not wearing her mask. If I get Covid I know where to trace it back to. All in all, the place is not for me. I get the idea that their patrons are very ok with the lack of pandemic protocols. It seems like a great neighborhood joint whose clientele enjoy mediocrity and relaxed views on pandemic observations. Texas Traditions has been a favorite place for our family for almost 10 years. We went for dinner tonight and left shortly after arriving as only one server of the 5 was wearing a mask and none of the kitchen staff were wearing any face coverings at all, including one older lady coughing over the silverware. In addition, they do not appear to follow the limited capacity guidelines either. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. Their behavior is deliberate and totally irresponsible. Unfortunately for us, we won't be going back since ownership obviously doesn't care about the health and safety of their customers. Sad! read more

Cute place. We love supporting small businesses but we were a bit disappointed. Food was good but not great. I ordered a burger but the waitress asked if I wanted fries and named off a few types so I went with Cajun fries which were bland. Got the check and was up charged $4 for the fries and $1.25 for a little extra gravy for my husbands chicken fried steak. She never mentioned the up charges. I'm not a big fry eater so I couldn't done without the fries and would have if she had told me they were $4 extra on top of my $14 burger. read more

Very disappointed Food wasn't good. Got chips and quest for appetizers it was watery. Got rubbery steak and my boyfriend got raw catfish. I had high hopes for Texas Traditions. I do not expect to return, though. I entered and was asked what I wanted, which caught me off guard. I said, "Um, to eat here?" The waiter laughed and seated me. The waitress took my order promptly, however, while I was watching them tidy the restaurant, I also overheard the waiter and waitress making negative statements directed toward the bus boy who seemed the hardest working person in the restaurant, carrying ice buckets, and busing tables. I ordered steak fingers. In about 20 minutes, I got chicken fingers, which was not what I ordered. They were also quite bland and cut in strangely huge pieces that were unwieldy. I let my waitress know about the problem and she offered to make me steak fingers. I declined, telling her it was a time issue, because I knew I would not be able to eat them in the time I had remaining for my lunch hour, if I added in the time to cook. I had expected her to offer to comp my app or my drink, but she did not. Again, time was of the essence, so I did not make a scene or ask for a manager. The food itself was OK. Very nice casual atmosphere with great service. I was extremely impressed with the thick country gravy that came with my husband's chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. The catfish was perfection as was the sweet potato fries and fried shrimp. The fried oysters tasted strange, not what I expect them to normally taste like. I don't think I would order those again. The tartar sauce was a sweet blend. I prefer a more horseradish taste. On the whole, a very nice place to get some comfort food and to relax with your friends or family. Right in the heart of Katy, the very historic side of Katy! Ordered steak kabob with mashed potatoes, macaroni with cheese, Texas toast. It was very good except that it needs more salt but just put a pinch of salt and it should be perfectly fine. My friends had burgers and also liked it. But I had to ding them 2 stars because not one employee was wearing a mask in the middle of this coronavirus pandemic. No tables closed for social distancing either. They were wiping down their menus with what looked like Windex. We won't be back until after the pandemic. There is no excuse for not wearing masks to protect your patrons. Terrible service. We were excited to check them out one day for lunch recently. Sadly we never even got to try the food. Never got our order taken. Spent 45 minutes in the restaurant and our server never took our order. Server disappeared on us. Not a single manager in sight. No other server bothered to notice we were waiting to get our order taken. They may have good food but service is a big part of dining out. Absolutely no reason why our missing server could not find a single minute to take our order. There are simply too many restaurants in Katy that are exemplary. Was a bit skeptical at first because there was a sign when you enter that said "Please Wait To Be Seated" and it was probably 3-5 minutes before someone said seat yourself. Once we were seated we received menus and our drink order was taken...and we waited again. In all fairness, it was Saturday night and they were busy. Finally, a different waiter came to take our order and seriously, our food was served in less than 5 minutes, piping hot & Delicious! I had the small chicken fried steak which filled my plate! The meat was tender and flavorful and not a processed, preformed steak. The batter was tasty and not over done. The green beans were very tasty as well. Hubby had the The Big Daddy? Burger...a half pound burger with a half pound of chopped brisket on top of it, served on a jalapeño bun with jalapeño coke slaw. It was HUGE! Hubby enjoyed it greatly! I've been coming here for the past 6 weeks every Tuesday for their daily special which is the hamburger steak. I have never had a problem with the food quality or service. I have to say this place has a mix of southern charm with their friendly staff and home cooking. I've been to Texas Traditions numerous times. I have had pretty much everything on the menu... breakfast to regular menu and their homemade pies..theynever disappoint. On the weekends they have live music which adds to ambiance of this unique establishment. I have to say the waitress (Autumn) is always on point and never slacks in her customer service. So if you want a little piece of Texas..great food accompanied with an ice cold beverage and awesome people then you have to go to Texas Traditions.
