Only giving it 2 stars because the second go around had better service. Menu is hit or miss. Tacos are worthless. I've had better flavors at Taco Bell. Tortillas are spongy and dry at the same time. Ordered carne asada tacos and they lacked flavor, intensity and seasoning. Ceviche was a HUGE miss. Basically a crap mountain of shrimp and lime soup. Not authentic in the slightest. I've had better from a taco truck. Chips are nice and crunchy but a little thick for my liking. Poppers were the only tasty thing we had. Drinks are pricey, but I guess it's worth it for how heavy handed the bartenders are. Ambiance is nice and well styled, but pretty small and even smaller when there's "live music". Pretty annoying at that point. Other things on the menu had my interest but not enough for another go around. Our server was great the second time. First time we went was for a small private event in their event space of about 30 people. Service was miserable and ill-equipped to handle the group. Perhaps they were just short staffed. Food was way behind schedule, buffet set up was not fully stocked at any given time. Most of us just gave up and got what was there. Regardless that we have a head count and paid ahead for our meals. Appetizers ran out after the first 10 people. Dinner options weren't prepared and out for service at the same time so half of us only had access to a portion of the options. Dessert was WAY behind and was being served as half the guests were leaving. Then we were told we only had 10minutes left in the room. Needless to say, I'm ok not exploring the rest of the menu. read more

This place was AMAZING! They make all of their specialty drinks in house and from scratch. I asked for a recommended Tequila flight and the bartender did not disappoint! He even explained to me how to properly drink each one! Then... the goat cheese balls with honey and pistachio dust a MUST! read more

So right off the bat I am giving it 3 stars. The rational behind that is we've been going there for months! Sometime every other weekend and sometimes weekly. And since we started frequenting there we have noticed a decline in service... with the exception of two very attentive wait staff. When we walk in there is rarely a happy greeting. No smile... no "hi there" and then we'll be asked if we had a reservation which we usually do. This is an unfortunate greeting downfall of the restaurants yummy food. The food is almost always perfect... except when the menu or cook is changed and entrees come out different than the last time we ordered. The live music on Thursday evenings is why we started going there. Very nice music the majority of the time. The last time we were there the waiter that took our check and money made an error, that was fairly easily clarified. But it just didn't seem they had time for us. In short make a reservation on the weekends... and see if the greeters are "welcoming" you into their establishment. Jicama shrimp tacos... yum Tortilla soup...yum Fajita platter... yum and enough for two. Modelo negro on draft... always good! read more

Disclaimer-- I am spoiled when it comes to Mexican food since I call Tucson AZ home. . (but now live in Anchorage) The adult beverages were absolutely amazing! Our service was top notch, very friendly and tentative but not annoying. This is more of an attempt of giving downtown Anchorage fun rustic industrial gastropub...the atmosphere is wonderful. Now to the food. . My food was good, for folks that aren't used to having home cookin mexican food this place is by far tasty. However it is an upscale place. You're not gonna find pollo and Carne asada tacos here. Definitely give it a go...the chips and guacamole, amazing. . Made with homemade sweet potato chips vs tortilla chips :-) read more

My husband is Mexican and we been into tapas style plates so we gave Tequila 61° a try. We are definitely coming back. I love the décor - I describe it as mix of modern industrial with a touch of romance. Suggestion: must try Elote cocktail and their version of a Creme Brulee. read more

A tex-mex place very conveniently located in downtown Anchorage. Very open and spacious, modern décor and good atmosphere. Were seated immediately and the server was friendly - explained the menu to us. Their tacos were half price during lunch hour. We ended up ordering Fajita Molcajete which is a favorite dish of ours and we found it on their menu. It was fresh, portion size plentiful and served on a wooden board. Also tried their guacamole since had read good reviews about it. This we found just average. The person who seated us told us that everything in this place is made there only. The server told us that they do not make guacamole at the time of ordering but was premade and they make couple of times during the day. That explained the reason - guacamole always tastes good very fresh only. But the chicken molcajete was good, rice was soft, beans and the dips complemented well with it. Overall food was delicious in a fun atmosphere. read more

First time at Tequila 61. Upon walking in, the greeting was quite poor. The hostess seemed annoyed we where there and the greeting was left to be desired. We sat for some time without being greeted. Eventually our server showed up, initially he was pretty bare bones although once we started ordering (demonstrating we would have a high priced ticket) he quickly became attentive and helpful. The tequila presentation was great and the cocktail was unique and spot on. The guacamole was awesome and the cheese enchiladas and duck tacos where amazing. Bottom line: this place has a great vibe, good food and good tequila and cocktails. For spending over one hundred dollars for two people, the greeting and service needs a tune up. Will come again. read more

Tried Tequila 61 for dinner and overall I had a great time. The decor and atmosphere were amazing. It has a really cool rustic/modern look to it. The staff was wonderful, very nice and accommodating. The food was good, not great though. I had the tamarind shrimp and it tasted good but my shrimp was a bit tough. The presentation of the food was stunning. Overall, I'd eat here again. read more

The food was fantastic. Our server was not anything to comment about. I would go back at a different time in hopes of a better attitude. read more

This place was mediocre. The guacamole was bland and over powered by lime. The steak tacos were again bland and definitely needed more sauce. The only thing good about this place was the margaritas. read more

Came here for dinner the other night and we sat at the bar. Bar tender was not very attentive at all. He kept chit chatting with coworkers and walking away during our time here, took around 10 minutes to even acknowledge us. Not just normal banter, it was excessive. It was just my bf and myself. We placed our order: I got the Baja and the shrimp tacos, bf got the shrimp, veggie, and the salmon. We did not read the fine print. There are 3 tacos in each order. Would've been nice if the bartender made mention when we ordered 15 (decent sized) tacos between the two of us. Yes, I take full blame for not reading the menu properly, but come on a quick heads up would've save us a huge chunk of change. He was not nice about it when we explained our confusion as they arrived. It sincerely came off as him knowing what he was doing and just wanting a bigger tip. The tacos were good but the experience as a whole left a bad taste in my mouth. Huge waste of food and money. Not coming back. read more

The service was decent but the food was absolute trash. I was so unbelievably appalled by the prices for such terrible food. No seasoning, such dry meat, uncooked rice that was hard to chew. Out of both me and my husbands meals, the refried beans were probably the only food I could actually not feel nauseous from. My husband and I's first and last time going there. read more

I am honestly NOT A FAN of this place. The interior is cool and that is the only thing that this store has going for them. Their food is mediocre at best and the menu is tiny with very strange options. I've gone there a couple times to give them more chances and they got a new manager recently and he is one of the rudest managers that I have ever met and he always REEKS of cigarette smoke. He is like a walking cigarette and it is unpleasant to be anywhere near him. I woulnd't waste your time by going to this place. read more

Marco is an amazing bartender! Very friendly and made us many amazing cocktails! Such a great vibe! Our only regret is we didn't have dinner here... we had already eaten down the road! Food looked amazing!!! read more

Love the food. Large group but they provided great service (reservation). Great specialty drinks including my personal fav the spicy margarita. read more

Yes! This place is worthy of 5 stars....unless you like Taco Bell, then this is NOT your place. Uniquely prepared and presented, excellent taste, great service, and a wonderful atmosphere. We had the Jalapeño Poppers appetizer. Which is NOT a typical frozen popper. It's 3 giant Jalapeños stuffed with cheese and deep fried. Had the chicken enchiladas as a main course...they were very, very tasty. Cold Mexican beers on tap. If I lived in Anchorage I'd be here all the time. read more

We're from central Texas and this was our first try at Mexican food, at the end of our 2 week Alaska vacation. Delicious with just the right spice. We had the Avispa and Spicy Margarita to drink and the Al Pastor tacos and guacamole to snack on. Excellent service and reasonable happy hour pricing. read more

We went for happy hour and loved it! All the tacos were amazing and the queso fondue was delicious

After continuously hearing about this place downtown I had to give it a try! If you are wondering what it's like, consider yourself taking a small bite out of little Mexico. This place was packed with flavor with every bite I took and the drinks were flavorful. If you're downtown and looking for something new to try give this place a chance (: read more

Agree with many of the previous posts. Nice atmosphere, service and presentation of food, but wasn't a huge fan of the taste or food quality. Wasn't bad by any means, but would rather try another restaurant I've never been to before than go back again on my dime. read more

Wonderful choice for those looking for Mexican food with flair. Started off with Paloma Morada, a tequila cocktail recommended by our server. Delicious, tart, with a touch of beet sweetness. We ordered pork tacos and salmon tacos. Both were delicious. My husband thought the pineapple was a strong flavor in the salmon, but I thought it was a balanced combo. We both agreed we would eagerly return to discover more menu items. Service was really great too. A great addition to the Anchorage food scene. read more

Stopped in here for lunch on 14 May because it was close to the arts and craft fair. It was pretty empty, but turned out to be excellent! Service: attentive, informative, friendly. The server was great, and the manager even came out to chat. Menu: admittedly on the small side. However, very unique and I think most people could find something appetizing. Food: all around just excellent! Salmon tacos and carnitas tacos were incredible, chipotle salsa was perfectly smooth and smoky. Sweet potato chips and guacamole were great. Decor: eclectic, but really interesting. We all discussed the decor and decided we really enjoyed it. Drinks: two margaritas and a gin & tonic. The margaritas were excellent. The G&T was kinda weak...Id recommend a double. Price: lunch for 5, appetizer, and three drinks: $108. Pretty reasonable, especially considering how delicious it all was. read more

My son told me this is an excellent place for dinner and drinks so we stopped in at lunch while in town. Jalapeño Salad with chicken was fresh and different. (Both unusual for the Anchorage lunch scene). Everything is made from scratch and you can really tell these people have an affinity for food and comfort. The server was friendly and knowledgable. Excellent glass of ice tea, too read more

The first time we visited, the tacos were delicious. Great fresh ingredients and unique sauces and salsas. Not so a year later. Recently got takeout here - clearly not their forte. Ordered four types of tacos and each was served without any of the sauces or salsas listed on the menu. All were dry and bland. When we discovered this and called the restaurant we were told none of the tacos was supposed to be served with any sauce or salsa (despite the listing on the menu). Eventually were begrudgingly given a couple containers of generic salsa, which were not the missing ingredients from our order listed on the menu. Also one of the orders was packed upside down - instead of tacos, we got a pile of ingredients in a heap in the box. Ended up throwing most of the order away. read more

Stupid expensive, even for Alaska. Even if you get over that the food wasn't good. Soup tasted like tomato paste, drink was about 4 ounces, and steak wasn't cooked all the way. Will not return read more

Cool, trendy spot. Very strict with their meal times. We were there at 4:30 but wouldn't give us a dinner menu until 5 pm. It was good but a little pricey read more

Absolutely love love love this place. Been there quite a few times. They have a couple of new people rotating through so my last couple of times there the service was awful. But the guys that have been there are amazing. Very nice people. Get the horchata cornbread before it runs out. read more

I went there for lunch today. Everything about the restaurant was unfriendly. I was there at 11:30 am the restaurant wasn't busy the server acted like I was bothering her. I asked a couple of questions about what was in their sauces...I do this because I have sensitivities to many stabilized sauces...mayonnaise would be one! I don't want to be sick. I ordered Chili Relleno...certainly not what I got. If you are going to be so different from what your guests expect, you need to have staff that can answer questions. And you need to have a description of what you are serving...a half a baguette with bean spread and there may have been a chili in that mess somewhere...it wasn't the main feature:( My mistake was not ordering the half price tacos on Tuesday...maybe you should only serve tacos on Tuesday. read more

We have some great restaurants in Anchorage. I'm glad Tequila 61 is joining the ranks of the creative ones. Unique menu items, not your typical Mexican restaurant by a long shot. And most important to me, some great vegetarian fare. Hands down, the best vegetarian entree I have had in Anchorage -Porto Pablano, beautifully prepared, wonderful flavors. Thanks chef! read more

I think I need to try this place a few more times. It's a good concept, and the food is different, but the portions are probably on the smaller side of what a standard customer may be expecting. Our party went for lunch and nearly waited the full hour for taco-centered dishes. The waitress was forgetful of our drinks and final bill, but another fellow thankfully came around to pick up the slack. *le sigh* read more

Good service. Go for the drinks but skip dinner. I would go again for an after dinner mezcal or tequila based drink .

This is my experience. Bartender was not friendly enough to make me feel welcome. Didn't even ask if I wanted another drink. I hate sitting at the counter. I wanted a table. Enchiladas were ok, tortilla soup was tasteless. All my food came at once. I rushed before everything went cold. Nice ambiance but a smile goes a long way. Try to smile more often. read more

A little too trendy for my tastes. Interesting but I prefer traditional Mexican. Great presentation but it's all flare and no taste.

This is now one of my new favorite places. We got the guacamole and the queso for appetizers. The guacamole was fresh and pleasingly acidic. The queso was smoky and well balanced. We got three types of tacos to share. The shrimp, the salmon, and the carnitas. I would highly recommend all three. They were very different from each other and creatively paired with their respective toppings. The jicama shrimp taco was my favorite. Very creative and well done. We finished with the brownie for dessert. The brownie was fresh, home made, and had a beautiful presentation. For some reason they were not serving alcohol tonight which was disappointing because the drink menu is impressive, creative and fresh. Will be back! read more

If you're hungry bring your pay check or eat before... The food items were small in portion compared to the price. I ordered the shrimp one thing or another on the large plate. It was 28 $ for 4 pieces of bacon wrapped shrimp with cream cheese and jalapeño slices inside. It came with the equivalent of a small tuna can of cheese risotto (Italian rice) the food flavor and presentation was nice. One more thing I don't understand, in what world do we live in the draft beer is more expensive than bottles. Corona for 5.50 Alaska Amber 6 read more

This is an excellent Mexican restaurant with a modern twist. I loved this place and it was chill.

Went in for a late lunch....bartender was great and very knowledgeable about tequilas... the blackened salmon tacos were amazing!
