Last time I dine in gañoteen restaurant was 2019. The restaurant food was great and the atmosphere was amazing. Now the food is not as great as before and the servers as they are many of them they don't know what they're doing. Get the first course and after few bites they deliver the main course! I asked the runner to send it back because I'm not ready for it, trying one of morocion wine to pear with my meal it was not good for me ( only 3 wine choices), beer list is very poor, cocktails could be a good option if they make it right but they don't know anything about bar. I wasn't amazed about the food either, I take my main course to go (fita with lamb), the worst I had in my life in the Middle East or American. Give 22% tips and I was very upset to pay this $107 for one person and this special cocktail new old fashion was so sweet like a syrup! . So good and very much worth the trek. My friends and I live in manhattan, so heading here wasn't the easiest, but we left the restaurant very happy that we made the trip. They give complimentary zaatar & pita bread, which was great with our hummus and baba ganoush. We were pretty full and happy just after apps, but the entrees are LARGE. A hefty portion packed with flavor. I got the lamb shank, which was crazy tender and flavorful. Everyone enjoyed and had some leftovers. I came here for dinner with a friend on a Thursday night since I was in the area. I don't really hang out in Bay Ridge but there seems to be a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants. I decided to check this one out since it had high reviews. I'm so glad I did! The restaurant has a lot of seating and it was pretty crowded even on a Thursday night. We ordered the mini shawarma sliders, the fattoush salad, and the lamb baked eggplant. We were also given a basket of complimentary pita bread and za'atar crackers. I really liked the za'atar crackers more than the food! The shawarma sliders were cute and I appreciated that you can customize whatever toppings you wanted. The fattoush salad was fresh and delicious. The lamb baked eggplant was unique and delicious as well. I really liked the almonds in between the layers. The service was friendly and helpful. I have been coming here for years and never wrote a review for some strange reason. This without a doubt the "go to " Middle Eastern restaurant in Brooklyn if not all of New York City. I came here with 5 family members and had one of the most memorable meals I have eaten in a long time. I didn't take photos of everything but trust me I have never had a bad dish here. The service is excellent and multiple servers check on you, clean the table regularly, and change your silverware which doesn't happen often enough in other restaurants these days. The owner Rawia was on site as she regularly is and Cosme over at least twice to make sure everything was going well. I introduce my family members who live on the island of St. Maarten to Rawia as they were overjoyed with her food. We ordered a great bottle of wine from Galilee which was a blend 2014 vintage. For appetizers we shared the Hummus and pita bread, Kibbie balls which are finely ground lamb, pine nuts and onions. We also had the spinach pies and Shwarma sliders which were mini pita stuffed filet mignon, tahini sauce and toppings. For the main course with shared the Lamb Shank which is served on the bone and is so tender the meat just falls of the bone. It was worth every penny. We also shared the Chicken Curry dish which also had some of the most tender chicken I've ever eaten. I wanted to taste the spin Middle Easterners out on it combates to the various Indian and Caribbean versions I've had. It was great and had a touch of lemon or lime which set it apart. Everything was served with BasmatiThe desert was to die for!! Knafeh which is baked ricotta cheese with shredded Phyllo dough. All in all highly recommended and one of the best restaurants in Bay Ridge and all of New York City! There are multiple articles in the New York Times, Daily News and other food reviews. As a Palestinian American, I was very excited to try this place out. The decor is beautiful. The music is familiar. And service was professional. Food is on the pricier side but portions were pretty big and felt like I got my moneys worth. I'll start with the complimentary bread and pickled veggies. Very nice start to the meal. The pita bread was nice and soft. The Zataar bread was crispy and hot. The pickled veggies was fresh and crunchy. If they threw an olive or two in that veggie mix it would have been a whole appetizer. They had a special stuffed peppers with harissa, walnut, and pomegranate with a side of spicy purple cabbage. This dish was nothing like I've ever had before and that may or may not be a good thing. It isn't bad by any means and It was very unique but it didn't feel like I was eating a Palestinian or middle eastern dish. To be honest, the best thing on the dish was the spicy purple cabbage. Give me a plate if that and I'll be good. If you like spicy pickles then this may be for you. Just wasn't my thing. I also ordered the chicken freekeh soup. It was excellent. Tasted just like the soup from my childhood except they were pretty heavy with the garnish (parsley or coriander?) which gave it an extra punch of freshness. I quite liked it. Probably my favorite dish of the night. In general, this place seems to be heavy handed with the lemon, herbs, and spices. So just be prepared for a flavor bomb in your mouth when you come here. If you prefer subtle and simple flavors, this is not for you. Now the main was fish kibbie served with a side of Fatoosh salad. The salad was very lemony, and very earthy due to all the herbs. It was good but I wish they packed more pita chips into it. They are heavy handed with everything else why not pack it with crispy pita chips too. I had more than half my salad left by the time the pita chips were done. The fish kibbie was also very unique and different. I didn't taste any fish and it felt like I was eating a spinach krass (stuffed bread pie). The outer crust was good but the actual filling was straight spinach and onions which isn't was I was expecting when ordering a fish kibbeh. It was fresh and good but if I wanted molokhia I could have certainly ordered it off the menu. It just didn't feel like the meal I ordered and the meal I received were the same thing. Just to recap, this place is definitely very unique, fresh and flavorful. I would suggest coming with friends and ordering several things. If you are looking for mama's home cooking, you may not find it here outside of the freekeh soup. I went to Tanoreen with a group of friends who were fasting for Ramadan (8 of us in total). We made reservations for our table and were seated on time. When we were seated they provided us with dates and apricot juice to break our fast and said that they would bring out our appetizers once it's time to break fast. I appreciated their thoughtfulness and service! We ordered a few appetizers - labneh, hummus & meat grape leaves which I highly recommend you try as well. The hummus is quite creamy. But it goes well with the complimentary pita bread they bring when you are seated. The entrees were good as well my friends and I agreed but it wasn't exceptional- I think I expected some more flavor in some of the entrees. Most of the entrees come with rice and salad. They also had a specials menu for some appetizers and entrees. Our dessert included kunefe which was so delicious. It wasn't too sweet and it was nice and cheesy! Highly recommend. I really wanted to rate this place higher but was just disappointed with overall quality. We chose to drive all the way down to Bay Ridge to satiate our travel FOMO and instead feel like we were transported back to Lebanon. Alas, there were quite a few things missing. Slow to offer grabbing drink orders -- my partner was taking awhile to park our car and while I claimed the seat and was promptly given our reserved table I could not flag any waiters attention to get started on a beverage. Appetizers and zaatar pita -- these were excellent and if I had known that the apps were the best seasoned I would have stuck to ordering mezze style meal. Got the squash hummus and fennel salad and these were just so delicious and filling. Cocktail -- kudos for good use of zaatar as salt rim for margaritas. This was ok and refreshing. Main -- we shared their lamb shank that they pointed out as best dish in the house. I will say the meat consistency was fantastic but it's like they forgot to put salt and the whole dish was just incredibly underwhelming. Avoid Syrah Bekaa Valley wine -- I couldn't even finish this wine, the alcohol content was overpowering you could not taste any of the actual grapes. Ambiance -- I'm all for resurrection of the restaurant scene post pandemic but this place felt far far far too crowded and seats too close to each other. The decor was also underwhelming, reminded me more of an American diner and not much hints of Its roots. Overall would say it's ok place for a neighborhood spot but would say not worth any trek. My boyfriend and I discovered that Tanoreen is our very own neighborhood Michelin star restaurant and came here to celebrate our anniversary. Unlike your average Michelin star restaurant, the prices here are very affordable. That and their lovely outdoor dining area make it a great pic for celebrating a special occasion. We don't eat Middle Eastern food often and chose dishes out of our comfort zone. We ordered cauliflower steak as a starter and lamb fetti. This was more than enough food for the both of us. The cauliflower steak was very unique. Its panko breading and crispy perfection are accentuated by the tahini dressing and harissa sauce. It was very filling. The fetti platter was equally as impressive. The lamb had no gamey flavor, and the roasted almonds added a unique nuttiness to what would otherwise be a typical rice and meat dish. The only thing I didn't like was the gummy, slightly mushy texture of the pilaf and rice. The outstanding service provided by the waitstaff completed the trifecta of this near perfect meal. It was a hot day so we were constantly chugging water, but the waiter never left our glass less than half full. All the staff were so pleasant, polite, and attentive. We couldn't help but marvel at how great the service was. To close out the meal, we wanted to try the Sahlab, a custard with pistachios and rosewater. Sadly, they were sold out so we ordered the Harissa instead. This is a light, crumbly cake with coconut flakes and rosewater. It was a good light dessert to end the meal. We started with falafel, hummus, labenah, and olive spread. The falafel was the top choice for my wife and I. Nice flavor and quite crispy. Not dry at all. Second favorite item was the olive spread. It paired very well with the zatar seasoned bread. Actually, all the spreads paired best with the zatar seasoned bread. For the main course, we shared the grilled porgy, koshari, and a lamb dish. The koshari was the most interesting dish to me. It's sort of a large mixed platter with rice, lentils, macaroni and a bunch of other stuff. Definitely a hodgepodge of comfort food. I've been recommended to visit Tanoreen by several friends and patients ever since I moved to Bay Ridge, and I figured it was a bucket list item before I move. I definitely was not disappointed, and I wish I had gone earlier! The food at Tanoreen was very well made, the blend of spices and flavors dance on your tongue. I have to say I was skeptical of the cauliflower steak, but everyone seemed to order it, but it was a great appetizer! And the lamb fetti for the main was even better! The tahini with the pilaf and lamb came together so well, I still crave it today. I will have to say though, either come hungry or come with a friend because the food is very filling, and they come in large portions. The service overall was excellent too. On a recent visit to Brooklyn, I had the opportunity to try Tanoreen. Since 1998 Tanoreen has been a virtual landmark of Palestinian & Middle Eastern food in the Bay Ridge area, but I haven't yet been there myself. Thanks to my sister and her family, that changed on Saturday. Tanoreen doesn't look remarkable from the outside, and the inside is certainly pleasant, warm and welcoming, but is also not anything exciting. That all changes when you sit down. The service is attentive, professional, friendly and supremely helpful. That last part is important if you're not familiar with the cuisine, the flavors, what foods are complimentary, or simply knowing how much to order, since much of the eating is family style. Our waiter walked us through it all and the meal we had was nothing short of outstanding. Shortly after being seated, the table is served a complimentary basket of house-made pita and flat bread, including a crispy Za'atar flatbread that was really good. They also bring out a small selection of middle eastern spiced pickles, which we asked for more of. For appetizers we choose a mezze platter, which isn't listed on the menu, but they're happy to make it. It includes four items of your choice. We got the Baba ghanoush, Hummus, Mhammara and the Brussels Sprouts, which are coated in, garlic-panko breadcrumbs, fried and drizzled with a tahini-yogurt-pomegranate sauce. You can get that dish on the regular menu. I highly recommend it. We also ordered the Kibbeh Nayyeh, which is raw lamb mixed with fine bulgur and spices. It was served with diced white and red onions and harissa. If you like steak tartare, you'll love this. Anther appetizer we really liked was the Musakhan, a round flatbread topped with sumac-spiced shredded chicken, caramelized onions and toasted almonds. The star of the appetizers (and my favorite part of the meal) was the Fried Cauliflower Steak. While fried cauliflower and cauliflower steak is nothing new, this preparation, which is the chef's creation is the best version of cauliflower that I've ever had. Even the people at our table who where not keen on eating cauliflower thought it was great. It's a two or three-inch slice of cauliflower that's been breaded with panko & parmesan, deep fried and covered with tahini, pomegranate molasses and spicy harissa. It's served with a steak knife and is very much just like a steak. It was crispy and crunchy, while still remaining moist inside, and full of different layers of textures and flavors. The tahini, pomegranate molasses & spicy harissa was the perfect complement, contributing a salty, spicy, tangy, tart and sweet flavor that didn't overwhelm the cauliflower. For entrees we chose the Lamb Fetti and the Lamb Shank Tagine, which was a special. The lamb shank was braised with olives, dried fruits, herbs, saffron, spices and served with rice pilaf. It was tender and very flavorful, but it was honestly not my favorite preparation of this dish. The lamb was excellent, but I couldn't distinguish the olives, dried fruits, herbs, saffron, and spices. The flavors seemed a bit muddled. It was definitely still good, just not what I was expecting. The Lamb Fetti, on the other hand was much more my speed. The best way I can describe it that it's like super flavorful lamb shawarma, with all those familiar spices, that's been shredded and served with toasted pita, rice and vermicelli pilaf. It's topped with yogurt-tahini sauce & almonds. It was delicious. For dessert we ordered the Sahlab; a sweet mastic flavored custard that's garnished with pistachios & rosewater syrup. Sort of middle eastern Panna Cotta. Everyone liked this, but frankly, for me, it paled in comparison to the other dessert that we ordered, which is another creation of the chef, and is the house specialty; the Knafeh. It's crispy shredded filo dough that's layered with sweet cheese and baked until melted and golden brown, and then soaked in orange blossom syrup and pistachios. We ordered the small size and split it between three people. It's undeniably very rich, but thankfully the sweetness from the syrup is subtle rather than cloying. The combination of warm, melty cheese, crunchy filo and sweet, fragrant syrup is nothing short of amazing. Along with the fried cauliflower, it's the dish I would recommend everyone try on their first visit. The entire meal and dining experience was perfection. An excellent option in Bay Ridge for outdoor dining during the covid pandemic. Specifically was looking for a place with heated outdoor seating and Tanoreen did not disappoint. The staff was very accommodating when we asked for an outdoor table, as there didn't seem to be many people dining at the off-peak time we came in, around 2:30pm on a weekday. They turned on the outdoor heat lamps just for us and within 10 mins or so, the tables outside were comfortable despite the 30 degree Brooklyn weather just beyond the covered space. Food-wise, this is decent to solid mediterranean food, and the falafel were delicious. My friend deeply enjoyed the chicken kabob as well. At lunchtime, if you order a main plate, you have the option of getting a lunch portion (half the quantity as a 'full plate') for a discounted price if you're feeling less hungry. We also tried the hummus, which was fine, but nothing special. The service was excellent - the waiters were pleasant and checked in periodically, did not rush us, and brought food out to us with a smile. I would say that overall this is a decent place for lunch and I would very much consider coming here again. The real win was the availability of heated outdoor seating, which can be hard to come by in NYC during the pandemic and can make all the difference in terms of comfort dining out. read more

The result is a menu filled with fabulous dishes that have one wanting for more. Even after a large meal, the offerings on the dessert menu were impossible to resist. The delight began with my cocktail. After discussing with the server my preference of a drink that wasn't sweet, my choice of the Za'atar Margarita was made. The potent drink consisted of anejo, za'atar shrub, and lime with mezcal. It was a new and welcome taste, the perfect choice. An appetizer that has spicy and really spicy selections was the Maldonado Peppers: Poblano & jalapeno peppers stuffed with walnuts, red pepper & spicy harissa. The Poblano peppers were plenty hot for me. Finishing them off with the absolutely perfect pita bread was a must. My first menu choice was sold out. Our server made the suggestion of the Mini Kibbies, which was perfect. The dish consisted of 6 Kibbie Balls, finely ground lamb & bulgur shell, lamb, nuts & onion. They were served in a large, low soup style bowl filled with thin goat milk yogurt. I cut the balls and ate with a soup spoon filled the yummy yogurt. It was fabulous. The dish was served with a bowl of Balsamic rice that was like no Balsamic rice I had ever tasted. It consisted of rice with sha'reeya noodles: thin, brown, short additions to the perfectly prepared rice. My son had the Vegan Combo. My daughter-in-law ordered Mansaf from the Daily Specials menu. It consisted of Balsamic rice topped with braised lamb chunks, house-made goat milk yogurt and almonds. Children's menu items are available. There was absolutely no way we could have dessert until we saw the menu. I couldn't pass up the Sahlab: Sweet mastic flavored custard garnished with pistachios & rosewater syrup. It was amazing!! My family shared the Middle Eastern Ice Cream, one scoop each of pistachio, chocolate & ashta flavored ice cream sprinkled with pistachios. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The owner stopped at the table, allowing us to thank her for the wonderful dining experience. Make a reservation to assure seating. It's a very popular restaurant. Chose Tanoreen as our favorite NYC restaurant to celebrate our father/grandfather's 80th birthday and he walked away saying it was the best meal of his life. Food is phenomenal and the service spectacular. Made family of all ages happy and everyone had favorites: mhammara, Brussels sprouts (a must), cauliflower, fatoush salad (so fresh with crunchy delicious!), eggplant napolean, halloumi cheese, musakhan (do NOT skip!), and the special maqluba. This place has been on my list for ages, and two friends and I finally made it out. A few of the dishes were misses but overall it was fantastic. I had the time after thyme cocktail, which was great. I always order something in my comfort zone. Not going to lie I'm happy the waiter got me me order something else. I came here during restaurant week. You basically can pick anything from their regular menu as long it's not sold out. I had their spicy tilapia which is one of their specials. I don't really eat spicy food and I can handle the heat. It was delicious. Their dessert it to die for. It was also featured on food network best thing I ever had and I can see why it was featured. If you love cheese, you would enjoy it. They do let you know it takes about 15 mins to prepare. read more

GET THE MINI PIES. They are filled with deliciousness. But seriously everything here was amazing. We tried the spicy grouper (which was not really that spicy, fortunately for me! It was just very flavorful.) We also tried the kefta tahini entree, and the knafeh dessert. The knafeh has an amazing crisp crust, only slightly sweet, with a fun cheese center that made me think of mozzarella. Service was lovely and the atmosphere was serene and very pleasant. I've visited Tanoreen twice now and, unfortunately, cannot say I enjoyed either of my experiences. I've walked past Tanoreen many times to see their outdoor dining jam-packed with customers! Being the only place in Bay Ridge that I knew of that sold the unique Turkish "stretchy ice cream" I ever so yearned to try, I stopped by their takeout venue on the side of their building to order a scoop to-go. The staff working there refused to serve me their famous ice cream that day but never bothered to explain why they couldn't simply package a scoop in a small container for me. When I offered to order something else in addition to the ice cream, they still refused my patronage, so I left unhappy and unsatisfied with their lack of customer service and explanation for declining my order. Although hesitant to give Tanoreen another try, I visited them with my family, where we received poor service yet again! Although I arrived at around 6:00 pm on a weekday when their outdoor patio was empty, the unfriendly host told me he'd sit my small party of three so long as we left by 7:00. I'm sorry, but no restaurant should be telling customers when they need to go - it's simply rude and makes the customer feel rushed and unappreciated. Well, I didn't understand how this server expected us to leave so soon when it took an hour for three simple appetizers to come to our table - a pathetically small feta salad, a watermelon salad, and five measly little falafel balls. More so, a woman I presumed. to be the owner never stopped by our table to apologize for the delay with our food or to check on us as she did with the other tables. She seemed too engrossed in laughing around with her "regular" customers to give us newcomers a glimpse of attention - she made us feel that our patronage was not welcomed. While I will admit their food to be quite notably delicious, their lack of knowledge of communicating professionally with customers and the drastically long time it took for them to make two simple salads and five little falafels convinced us that Tanoreen was not worth a revisit from us. We know better Turkish spots around the neighborhood with larger family-style portion sizes for the same price and friendlier customer service than what we dealt with here. read more

I ate here about a year ago and completely forgot about it and recently saw a video of this place on YouTube. Now before anybody makes any comments, this has nothing to do with any sort of conflict or war that's going on, but I'm going to be objective. As somebody who worked in restaurants for well over a decade, this was honestly one of the most disappointing and horrible Experiences I've ever had. I expected it to be very good especially with the neighborhood that it's in and me being Middle Eastern , I know a thing or two about the flavors and the quality, etc.. Needless to say did not get that here. I have legitimately had better meals at places like Olive Garden in Idaho Falls, Idaho. I vividly remember one of the servers coming up to me and my companion and asking us if the food was OK as we were unable to finish what was presented to us and I just couldn't tell him the truth, which is very uncharacteristic of me and said we weren't as hungry as we thought we were, but honestly The food was horrific and I kind of felt bad telling this waiter because I assume this is a family owned restaurant and everybody working there is related to each other. Even the person who I was with, who was from Ukraine said that she had had better tasting food in a cafeteria. Now, maybe I caught them on a bad day, but even my ex-girlfriend who lives in the neighborhood and is Jordanian has said that this place isn't good. I am very surprised to see that this establishment is as popular as it is or even has a Michelin rating. read more
