Sadly barbeque places like this are becoming a rarity. These guys have been around a long time and there's still a line for it. We decided to take the Ikea ferry over and grab some bbq in person. The line was long and we waited for about 45 minutes or more. Basically there's just two guys working the meat station and people seem to wait until it's their turn to make a decision on what to order. We for the pastrami bacon strip, the wings, the Frito pie, brisket, mac and cheese, and potato salad. It was pretty reasonably priced and the food rust we couldn't immediately pick up, came to us relatively quickly. There's no shortage of seats and you have many options of picnic tables or bars. I would say the food is overall decent. The brisket could be more moist. The wings were meaty but a bit bland without the ranch. The Frito pie was probably my favorite out of everything. Overall a fun experience. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon with a free ferry ride to Red Hook.
4.5 They have a location in Industry City, but read this is the original. (Anyway, made it our first destination for our Red Hook day). From the entrance, we joined the line to place our order. Menus posted on the wall. Music playing. Bar area, self-serve water dispenser, utensils/napkins, to-go containers (which we did need) are in this area. One of two dining areas is in the same room. Longer tables, some communal, are in the next room, where we sat. Temp that day was in the 90s, was ok indoors but still could use ceiling fan/s like in the first room. Restrooms available. Meats are priced by 1/2 lb. Carved and weighed at the front counter. Ordered everything else and paid there too. Most of the food was prepped as we ordered so able to take a whole tray already. So be ready for a bit of wait on the line but not in getting the food. Got a number and someone brought our jerk rib tips, which were made-to-order. Our favorite was the brisket - very tender with some fatty parts. Pulled pork was slightly sweet, was ok. I wasn't into the Jerk rib tips' flavor by itself, but was better with ranch dressing it came with. Meats were not so salty which was great. Can add the bbq sauces if wanted. Fritos pie was just a small bag of chips with toppings and was overall a bit salty for me. At least we got to taste their chili. For sides: Large size @$12-13 is not that large but ok for sharing if getting a few sides. We liked the vinegary mashed potato salad and mac and cheese. My family found the collard greens bitter but I liked them. Honey cornbread $7/square was sweet on the top. Want to try other things on the menu so for next time. Take Bus 61 at Boerum Pl/Joralemon St. to Van Brundt St/Beard St stop (bus is accessible from a few subway lines).
This is all relative but here in New York this is probably some of the better barbecue that I've had. However, if you compare it to Texas, it is almost uncomparable. They use two types of sauces here vinegar-based and tomato based. I liked the vinegar-based hot sauce better. Overall, I loved the jalapeno sausage the most followed by the lean and then the fatty brisket. The person cutting my brisket was cutting them way too thick. They were more like slabs of meat than slices of meat. Mostly self-serve where you order the meat first and then seat yourself and eat. Also bus your own tables. The live music help add to the " country vibes". Servers will offer you drinks when you wait in line hoping to upsell you more.
First time here and I would come again. The line was out the door and a server did come out and take drink orders, but I would have a staffer out there to direct traffic. For example , the bar was not crowded at all. We Coyle & would have sent one of our group in to grab drinks and keep us happy while waiting. Second, there were tables that we could have sat at while one of our group waited in line. Both of those things you could have been coached on because you can't see what's the lay of the land from street. Meat was great! Corn bread epic!! Rest of the sides were better than most.
Ordered: Stiegl Goldbrau Lager Pint (~$9): 5% from Salzburg, Austria 1/2 Pound Brisket (~$22) Pastrami Sandwich (~$32): on rye bread with brown deli mustard Small Mac & Cheese (~$8): w parmesan breadcrumbs Small Hometown Slaw (~$7) Aya's take: There's definitely a shortage of proper BBQ in NYC but the line is just a bit too much. I arrived & joined the line at 12:05pm on a Sunday (5 mins after opening) and waited until 1:10pm before ordering. The line is deceiving since more than half of it was inside but I didn't realize how far it extends to the register where you actually order. There was around 40 people waiting when I got there...again, 5 minutes after opening. Anyway, I committed to the line and realize it's wildly inefficient. There's only 1-2 people taking orders and 2-4 different workers standing around or doing something occasionally. They really have to figure out how to reduce these inefficiencies, at least on weekends. Now for the food, it's definitely amazing for NYC standards but not quite as good as Texas, in my opinion. The Brisket had some tender & juicy bites which I loved but most of it was on the dry/lean side. I wish the worker asked us for our preference. The Pastrami Sandwich was a good try and only available on weekends. The meat is smoky and savory, and tangy from the brown deli mustard. I actually loved their Mac & Cheese! It was so creamy, cheesy, and satisfying. Even the Hometown Slaw was just right. Not too creamy, not too vinegary, and gave us a fresh bite to cut through all the savory meat. The worker was nice enough to give me some pickled onions which I absolutely love with my BBQ. I wish they had some more local beer options but the Stiegl Goldbrau Lager Pint was great to sip on as someone who likes light & refreshing beers. Despite the atrocious wait time, I'm really glad I got to try it!
Will always be my top 3 for BBQ in Brooklyn. Yes there's a line. Yes it's worth the wait. Yes we stood in the rain but the wait wasn't too long this time. I have waited longer. I love that they now take your drink orders while you wait. Great for groups. Great for dates. Really awesome with family
Very good bbq. Not many places can do bbq well in nyc. This is one of the best in nyc for brisket. The brisket was very tender but is on the bland. They sprinkle salt on top but could have used more. The ribs were average. Mac and cheese was good. It is mostly self service.
Parking is limited nearby so I'd start browsing for a spot few blocks out if you're driving. Place gets packed on the weekend, line was around the corner moving relatively fast but not fast enough when you're baking in the sun in July heat. The line is usually only for food, bar is open for drinks and water which was a huge plus. Drinks were decent but overpriced, bartender selectively friendly. Plenty of sitting room, only few tables outside but there's indoor sitting in the front and additional back room. We got brisket (.6lbs) , spare ribs (.75lbs), corn bread, and sides of Mac & cheese, Texas style pinto beans, hometown slaw and backyard potato salad. Meat was really good, our batch was cooked and seasoned just right, a bit expensive for the quantity it ended up being but definitely passing quality expectations. Corn bread was amazing and I'm not even a fan of it in general but theirs was definitely the best I've had. Potato salad (mash!), Mac & cheese and slow was awesome parings for the meat, fresh and flavorful. Beans were too spicy and watery for our liking. Overall it's a good spot for bbq meat and we'll be back again to try other menu items.
Absolutely delicious food. In particular the beef rib, Mac and cheese, and queso were great. Brisket and corn bread were good as well. Such a cool space with good service as well. Pickles were much needed since the food is very heavy. We waited about 30-45 minutes on Sunday around lunch. Unfortunately they were sold out of the lamb bahn mi.

Hometown Bar-B-Que (Red Hook, Brooklyn) If you're a BBQ lover in NYC, Hometown Bar-B-Que in Red Hook is an absolute must. This place delivers real smoke, real flavor, and that no-nonsense Texas-style authenticity that's hard to find anywhere else in the city. From the moment you walk into the rustic, warehouse-style space at 454 Van Brunt St, you know you're in for something serious. The smell alone will make you hungry. I ordered the brisket, beef rib, and jerk baby back ribs, and each one was perfect in its own way. The brisket melts in your mouth with that beautiful bark and smoke ring. The beef rib is massive, tender, and full of deep smoky flavor. And the jerk ribs are a killer twist spicy, sweet, and unbelievably juicy. Their sides are no afterthought either--mac and cheese, baked beans, and collards were all on point. The staff is friendly, the vibe is relaxed, and even if there's a line, it moves fast and it's 110% worth the wait. Red Hook might be a little out of the way, but Hometown makes the trip feel like a pilgrimage. This is hands-down one of the best BBQ spots in New York City. I'll definitely be back again (and again). Highly recommend. Five stars all the way.
Really well loved and I was excited to finally go here for a friends birthday. Overall I do think the food is great but woof the line is insane. Why is there only one point of sale for a spot that constantly has a line out the door? This is good bbq but for nyc I fear you could probably find something just as good. Spent 1.5 hours in line for brisket and mac and cheese and I really liked the food, just didn't enjoy the wait. The brisket is juicy and well cooked. They were out of sandwiches so I went with the tacos. Tried my friend's cornbread and it was really nice, sweet, and moist.
This was hands down the best BBQ I have had in NYC. I don't normally love brisket and this was amazing. The star of the show were the sides though - the mac and cheese had a bit of spice to it and was slightly tomato based, and the mashed potato salad I LITERALLY wrote home about and told my mom and my aunt immediately, some of the best I've ever had. We got the brisket, the pulled pork, mac and cheese, potato salad, and cole slaw. read more
huge miss on this sandwich. not only was it dry (the cardinal sin of meat) but it was also cold. i watched the guy pull it out of a parchment paper and chop it up in front of me and the toss a few onions on a very dry bun (like actually flavorless). only thing that saved it was an ample squirt of sauce. the seating outside has a yellow jacket that kept attacking me (which isn't their fault, but a huge mood killer). server recommended this to me to be their "best" and i was let down. overall dry food, bad vibes. read more

Overall solid delicious bbq place and line moves pretty quickly. I really enjoyed the brisket , chicken wings, potato salad, and corn bread with honey and salt. I asked to do 1/4 brisket because I wanted to try it but didn't want to commit to 1/2 pound. Would not recommend it bc they cut the brisket thinner so it dries out faster. Overall, would recommend! read more

NYC sorely needs a competent BBQ joint and Hometown isn't it. came here on the Sunday before Memorial Day around 6pm-ish and we waited in line for about two hours. while we were waiting, there's a staff going down the line taking drink orders. it was a genius business idea really. after making our way to the meat counter, we ordered half a pound each of ribs (dry, but tender), pulled pork (incredibly bland and fatty, how could that be? tbh, i feel like i have made better pulled pork at home.), brisket (again, incredibly dryyyy like the Sahara and tough too). for the sides, we got the mac & cheese (decent), collard greens (not bad), and the highlight was definitely the cornbread. it was buttery and sweet! loved it. honestly, this place is incredibly overrated. even tho NYC is not known to have a great BBQ scene, we should not be hyping up mid-spots like this like it's the best establishment to have graced god's green earth. it was waste of time and money for sure. read more

An institution in the Red Hook neighborhood, Hometown is one of the top BBQ spots in NYC. We came for a quick snack and ordered 1/2 pound of the brisket. At $22 for 1/2 pound, it's definitely on the pricier end but the meat is smoked fresh and worth the price. Didn't try anything else here but I'd be back to try the ribs and pastrami bacon. read more
Probably it is the best BBQ place in NYC. Of course, it is taxes level of BBQ, but the line is insanely long, we arrived around 20 minutes after the restaurant just opened, but still spent 1.5 hours to get Recommended pork belly and brisket! read more
If you don't already know, the line is LONG and goes very slow. You'll get most of your food right when you order and they will usually offer drink orders while you're in line which makes the wait slightly more tolerable. The real winners here are the classics: the brisket, the mac n cheese, and the cornbread. Each of these were 5 star items. I would stay away from the Vietnamese chicken wings and Korean short ribs - they weren't bad, but they don't shine as much as the brisket and classic bbq does. The other sides were ok, but if you're just getting the collard greens and Cole slaw to try to be healthy, just don't. Go all in on the meats and you'll be happy! read more
Second time back and still definitely worth the trip. By far, this is the best barbecue in New York and it's no wonder why there's an endless line every minute of the day. Pick your poison because there's not a single item on their menu that is not worth devouring. Nothing but praise about this BBQ joint, keep up the incredible job. read more
Great meat and collard greens. Not overly salty and ok i know its a bbq restaurant but its a kinda serve your own forks and napkins place but they do bring the food to you, and it seem a bit chaotic but its organized at the same time. I did order the oaxacan chicken, bc! I saw they had tomatillo salsa. Yes it was amazing, portions for the ribs and macncheese were abundant. The pastrami bacon, wow nice! And let's not forget the cornbread, i love the seasalt flake, it really adds, and not in a bad way. The staffs are lovely and friendly, overall i'm happyy. We were happyyy. read more

The food, the atmosphere, the music, all contributes to a very nice and enjoyable dining experience at Hometown BBQ. I had the brisket, Korean ribs, a side of both potato salad and Mac and cheese, along with honey cornbread. I loved the Korean ribs the most, although everything was so good. The cornbread had a really nice flavor and was baked just right. I thought the potato salad was very unique. I had never tasted anything like it before. It's definitely worth trying. Overall, I can strongly recommend Hometown. If you're in the Red Hook area, it's a place that you shouldn't pass up. It's just a great family restaurant serving some of the best dishes around. read more
Be prepared to wait.... But if you do, the brisket sandwich is an absolute must order. Well portioned sandwich of meat and super tasty, I found this to be by far the best value on the menu. Everything else looked fine, but smaller portions than what I'd expect at a BBQ place. I'm sure it's good, but the brisket sandwich is the winner. If they sped up the ordering process a bit the line wouldn't have to be so long either. Worth the wear once though! read more

We didn't expect to find amazing BBQ in Brooklyn, but Hometown hit it out of the park! We were visiting Red Hook to hit WJ Distillery and stopped for lunch on our way. As soon as you enter the building the aromas of BBQ smoking warmly embrace you as you walk to the counter. The decor is modern rustic with ample seating and a stocked bar to the side! The bar has a variety of creative cocktails and also had Fiddlehead on tap when we visited (bonus points). Now to the BBQ. Prices were a bit steep, but for the location and quality of cooking I have no complaints. My goto to judge real BBQ is the beef brisket and Hometown's was amazingly perfectly cooked and flavorful without sauce. In addition to the BBQ, I have to mention their potato salad!! It was incredible! A balance between mashed and chunked seasoned just right! If you are looking for genuine BBQ, which most places don't get right, go to Hometown and you will not be disappointed. read more

Its very good bbq but I would not wait more than 20 mins for it. Best to go during a weekday when it's alot quieter. Everything was great. Brisket was overall good but there 2as some dry pieces. The pull pork is very tender. The Korean ribs were good mix of flavors but overall it could have used more sauce. For the side, Mac and Cheese, corn bread and the Brisket queso were the stand outs. read more
Long considered one of the top Texas style BBQ joins in NYC, hometown bbq is legit. Reminded me of Terry Blacks bbq in Austin. Although Hometown doesn't call itself TX bbq rather southern , it's a bit of fusion . On my last visit they featured pork bahn mi, Korean sticky ribs , along with classic brisket, ribs, pulled pork etc. The latter is available sandwich or by 1/2 lbs prices. Naturally there are classic side dishes on offer as well. Like Mac n cheese, slaw, beans , etc . There was a steady line to order , and there is no table service. Place is pretty much one order counter and a bar with communal seating all around . Everything was solid from brisket to pastrami and ribs were good. I thought brisket and pastrami were a touch dry and needed bbq sauce. Pastrami def dryer than brisket and if you're fan of Katz's pastrami this one is good but Katz is better coz they keep it moist right up until carving. Here it wasn't soaking in its own juices . As far as BBQ goes in NYC, this might be as good as it gets. The perfect place to stop at before an IKEA shopping spree or for a giant BBQ meal. The atmosphere brought to mind traditional BBQ shops in Texas, which was an instant plus. You order as much meat as want from the menu on the wall, and they serve it up in front of you. Service is fast and easy. Sandwiches and bacon take extra time to make, but still come out relatively quickly. The Pastrami bacon was $10 a slice, slightly outrageous, but insanely good. Please don't come for me, but I feel like Hometown BBQ is a bit overhyped. The rib tips and beef rib didn't quite deliver the fall-off-the-bone tenderness I was expecting. The brisket was on the dry side, which was disappointing. The winner was the thick slice of Pastrami Bacon. Juicy with a delicious bark. I'd go back just for that! As for the sides, the potato salad and collard greens were solid. Unfortunately, we arrived right at opening and the mac and cheese wasn't ready, which is arguably one of the must-have sides at any BBQ spot. I last went to Hometown five years ago and the beef rib was $55. I imagine that today the prices have risen substantially. Does anyone know the current (May 2023) Market Price for the Beef Ribs? Or how much has anyone paid for one recently? Thanks.

Are you guys doing lamb belly or the beef ribs on weekends?
Beef Ribs are only available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hometown's specialty offerings (like the lamb belly), come and go from the menu so it's best to check their website before you go. I've never had the lamb belly, but the beef rib is heaven.
Are they dog friendly?
Previous answers are outdated- since pandemic, they have added picnic tables outside, which you can definitely enjoy with your dog. Dogs are not allowed inside the premises, just like anyplace in NYC that serves food, but the outdoor tables are fine…
Do they cook the meat well done?
Meat is slow Cooked for 24 hours, no need to do it well done. You won't find any meat blood in it. It's just all the spoces and smoky flavor
How long would the wait be on a Saturday around 3-4pm?
Hit or Miss some times a few minutes 20-30 or even up to an hour
How is the parking situation? Is the neighborhood safe?
You can find parking. Yea... it's next to a fairway in RedHook so I'd say it's pretty safe.
How long do you expect the wait to usually be late afternoon on a Sunday (~2pm)?
30-40 min wait. Best to come at noon when it opens since after 1, families take over and not many tables are available
Do they sell there BBQ sauce? Also any chance they have a meat substitute.. burger or something as an alternative to meat?
They don't sell their sauce but they do offer you to take it home, they leave out small containers to fill it in. They do not have a meat substitute.
Is there waiter service?
No its cafeteria style, so you go to the counter, get your food and find a seat.
Are you open on July 4th?
They certainly are. My review was from July 4th. Watch out though, they run out of food on the holidays they are open and the line was down the block. Worth the wait though!
