Why is there only one point of sale for a spot that constantly has a line out the door? This is good bbq but for nyc I fear you could probably find something just as good. NYC sorely needs a competent BBQ joint and Hometown isn't it. came here on the Sunday before Memorial Day around 6pm-ish and we waited in line for about two hours. while we were waiting, there's a staff going down the line taking drink orders. it was a genius business idea really. after making our way to the meat counter, we ordered half a pound each of ribs (dry, but tender), pulled pork (incredibly bland and fatty, how could that be? tbh, i feel like i have made better pulled pork at home.), brisket (again, incredibly dryyyy like the Sahara and tough too). for the sides, we got the mac & cheese (decent), collard greens (not bad), and the highlight was definitely the cornbread. it was buttery and sweet! loved it. honestly, this place is incredibly overrated. even tho NYC is not known to have a great BBQ scene, we should not be hyping up mid-spots like this like it's the best establishment to have graced god's green earth. it was waste of time and money for sure. read more

You'll get most of your food right when you order and they will usually offer drink orders while you're in line which makes the wait slightly more tolerable. The real winners here are the classics: the brisket, the mac n cheese, and the cornbread. Each of these were 5 star items. I would stay away from the Vietnamese chicken wings and Korean short ribs - they weren't bad, but they don't shine as much as the brisket and classic bbq does. Long considered one of the top Texas style BBQ joins in NYC, hometown bbq is legit. Reminded me of Terry Blacks bbq in Austin. Although Hometown doesn't call itself TX bbq rather southern , it's a bit of fusion . On my last visit they featured pork bahn mi, Korean sticky ribs , along with classic brisket, ribs, pulled pork etc. The latter is available sandwich or by 1/2 lbs prices. As far as BBQ goes in NYC, this might be as good as it gets. The perfect place to stop at before an IKEA shopping spree or for a giant BBQ meal. The atmosphere brought to mind traditional BBQ shops in Texas, which was an instant plus. You order as much meat as want from the menu on the wall, and they serve it up in front of you. Service is fast and easy. Sandwiches and bacon take extra time to make, but still come out relatively quickly. The Pastrami bacon was $10 a slice, slightly outrageous, but insanely good. Crispy and charred on the outside, with an incredible concentration of flavor in the meat. The brisket sandwich was messy and gorgeous. The brisket was on the dry side, which was disappointing. The winner was the thick slice of Pastrami Bacon. Juicy with a delicious bark. I'd go back just for that! As for the sides, the potato salad and collard greens were solid. I am admittedly not a huge BBQ fan and this was not our first choice for lunch (we tried two other restaurants with enormous waits but were already in Redhook so leaving would have taken a ton of time before getting lunch). It was a lovely surprise. For one, the wait was so short. Plenty of open walk in tables and ordering was a breeze. I will say the food is pricey-even for BBQ meat. So we were a bit limited in what we ended up getting. Ordered a beef rib for $40: why it's so expensive I will never know. I do wish we were given real knives to cut it off the rib but once you get it off with the plastic knife you never want to stop. Brisket sandwich: maybe one of the best sandwiches I've ever had? I'm not even sure why. The onions were so well cooked and the bread just perfect for this occasion. Must try. Pastrami sandwich: was super excited to get this and was told after we ordered it was sold out. Bummer. Cornbread: I probably would never have ordered this if I hadn't witnessed the previous orders having theirs coated with a honey sauce that made it look heavenly. And it tasted so. This place came highly recommended and it's clear everyone else in Brooklyn seemed to have also got the same recommendation because the line was around the block! I'm not usually one to see a line and say "yeah, sure whatever" but this was a rare occasion where I was willing to wait. Considering they were rib tips, I was expecting it to be more tender. Pastrami bacon was so good. I loved the sauce that came with it. The smoke on it was perfect. Korean sticky ribs were quite small. While they were flavorful, they weren't fall off the bone. The vast amount of green onions were appreciated. Texas chili was good.
